Hip-hop has forever changed the face and course of modern music. Hip-hop artists don’t want 2-3 years between releasing records, sometimes they only wait 2-3 months or less. And they always seem to have a side project or two they are also working on. The mixtape has evolved and has become just as important as both EPs and LPs. In that spirit, here are my personal picks for the Top 10 Mixtapes Of 2011:
1. Verde Terrace by Curren$y
Of course the New Orleans chronic (pun intended) workaholic was bound to make this list. This was released in late August, and remains of one my favorites all year.
2. Blue Dream & Lean by Juicy J
Known for being a member of the Three 6 Mafia, the rapper released one of the best mixtapes all year round. Recently inked to Wiz Khalifia’s Taylor Gang label, expect much more from him soon. Special guests include Wiz, Kreayshawn, Space Ghost Purp & ASAP Rocky.
3. Under The Influence by Domo Genesis
The first of 2 on this list, from a member of the Odd Future gang. When this hit the internet in September, it had so much traffic it brought their servers crashing to a screeching halt.
4. I Love Life Thank You by Mac Miller
What a year for the Pittsburgh 19 year old. His major full length Blue Slide Park went to #1, selling over 150,000 units the first week alone. Mac released this right before that record dropped, in response to having over a million twitter followers.
5. Deep Purple by A$AP Rocky
Somewhat of a newcomer and taking many by surprise, this Harlem MC seems to have what it takes for staying power.
6. Return of 4eva by Big K.R.I.T.
Another young up and comer, the Mississippi native is a force to be reckoned with.
7. White Jesus by Rittz
The one and only White Jesus, aka Rittz, is one of the biggest surprises of the year. The Georgia/Alabama based rapper is a protege of Yelawolf.
8. Award Tour by Mike G
Another Odd Future member, this is was just released at the end of November, beginning of December, and is worth your attention.
9. Blackland Radio by Spaceghostpurp
The A$AP Rocky friendly Spaceghostpurp from Florida has been around for quite some time, and now seems like he will still be sticking around.
10. Covet Coup by Curren$y
The only hip-hop star with 2 releases on my list, Spitta Andretti teamed up with the magically talented Alan The Chemist (Alchemist) for this. Some think it was the best of the entire year, and was released on 4/20. There is a sequel planned for the same date in 2012.
Honorable Mentions:
I’m Gay (I’m Happy) by Lil B
Section 80 by Kendrick Lamar
On and On and Beyond by Mac Miller

I haven’t heard any of these! Gonna have to lend my ears. Thank you for the list!
The one mixtape I bumped this year was MC Lars’ “Indie Rocket Science.”

Bunch of excellent features, shows how much Lars has grown
