“1..2..3,4,5,6,7,8…”
It only takes the countdown of a few measures to expel an incredible rush of sonic energy in the latest single from the Fresno indie rock outfit Fierce Creatures – “Catacomb Party.” Much like a jet-fighter shooting off at an unprecedented speed, Fierce Creatures are able to craft an enthralling and captivating indie rock gem instantly as they engulf the senses with almost every sound imaginable. The combination of layers of guitars, bass, and a rhythmic drum beat help the shape this stellar song into something unlike I’ve heard recently. Building upon the succession of each measure allows for the 7-piece collective of musicians to quickly shape and shift their sound into an captivating sequence of catchy hooks and hauntingly-beautiful melodies. There is no doubt a heavy pop element to their latest single “Catacomb Party,” yet the constant infusion of psychedelic riffs in all of the instruments constantly gives the song a unique twist.
Having the pleasure of listening to a somewhat advance release of the album for the past few weeks, I’ve found myself more intrigued by the sounds and musical creations with every listen. After first hearing “Catacomb Party” over a month ago, I keep returning to the upbeat sounds and non-stop energy pulsating throughout this Fierce Creatures single. Beyond the intriguing intro blending vocals and guitars, the song kicks it up a notch with a collective declaration of “Hey!” from the 7-piece West Coast band. The ensuing song immediately takes on a dynamic nature to the sound – allowing for a variety of musical styles and genres to shine through as an influence on a collection of addicting melodies and music that bounce between keys and scales in a somewhat jazz-fusion nature. While the song progresses from each measure of sound to the next, the whirlwind of sound created by the dense layers of guitars and vocals add sonic fuel to the fire that powers “Catacomb Party.” It’s as if the built-up feelings and emotions of all seven band members were emancipated all at once – resulting in a spectacular composition of sound. Without a doubt this tune manages to sink deeper into my musical soul with every listen – a sure sign that this song is something remarkable in its own right. Unlike anything I’ve heard lately, “Catacomb Party” has already become one of the sonic highlights of the Summer of 2012 due to it’s unique sound and enthralling rush of sound. And after giving it one listen yourself, I’m sure you will start to think the same.
Even though this lead single from Fierce Creatures – “Catacomb Party” is highly-recommended from the Stereo/Pirate site, I cannot even begin to express how incredible and captivating this entire new album is. Recently-released through the absolutely stellar indie label Paper Garden Records, the Catacomb Party LP has quickly become one of my favorite albums of the past few months. Upon being given access to an advance copy of the album, I immediately fell in love after only one listen. The vast range of musical styles encompassed on this full-length release is truly mind-blowing, as Fierce Creatures manage to create some of the most captivating and intriguing songs that I’ve heard so far this year. You would be doing yourself an injustice to not buy this new album, as it is available on every format from digital download to physical vinyl. You can purchase the digital download of the Catacomb Party LP via the Fierce Creatures BandCamp, or if you prefer the full tones and warm sounds of vinyl like myself, you can still get your copy pre-ordered through the Paper Garden Records webstore. After falling in love with the eclectic pop sounds of Conveyor earlier this year, I didn’t think it was possible to top such a killer release from an independent label. Yet it seems like Paper Garden Records might have done just that with their newest release: Fierce Creatures – Catacomb Party LP
