Young Buffalo, the indie rocking duo hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, have surprised us with some exciting news! We haven’t heard much from them this year, as they parted ways with former member and bassist Alex Von Hardberger. They have provided opening support in the past for Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines, and Tennis. Now comes news of a new song and tour!
They have released the artwork/tracklisting/release date for their new self-titled EP. Young Buffalo play a unique brand of afrobeat-tinged indie rock that has been getting a lot of love from some of the indie rock world’s biggest tastemakers as of late. They’re about to embark on some fall tour dates (first with White Arrows and then with Admiral Fallow), and their lead single “Nature Boy” is making its way through the blogosphere at the moment. The new Self-Titled EP will be available on October 9th, 2012 in the US and November 5th, 2012 in the UK. The highly anticipated EP, which will be released onVotiv, has been picking up momentum amongst the world of indie rock
tastemakers as the free download of the EP track “Nature Boy” has been making its way across the blogosphere. The band has also
announced the EP artwork (included above) and the track listing for the EP:
1) Baby Demons
2) Hold Me Back
4) Nature Boy
5) The Prize
“Nature Boy” offers a glimpse into the Afrobeat-tinged, organic rock that makes up Young Buffalo’s highly-anticipated latest EP,
due out this fall on Votiv. “Nature Boy” exhibits the rare combination of infectious melody and progressive songwriting that results in a
unique listening experience while still offering fans the comfort that comes along with listening to something familiar.
The music of Young Buffalo’s upcoming release highlights the more mature mindset the band approached the recording process with this
time around. The band is a more cohesive unit than at any other point in their career, and they are genuinely happy playing music together.
When asked how the recording of this EP has changed his view of the band’s future, Barrett offered this statement: “Two years ago I would’ve
answered like ‘we’re going to win Grammys and tour the world. Now that’s just bullshit. I just want to be able to tour and make records,
anything else is a bonus. I just want an excuse not to be a caterer full time”.
Young Buffalo was born out of the prolific, yet under the radar, local University of Mississippi music scene, and its formation took place
over several long and sporadic years. Although the band can trace their origins back to Jim and Ben writing music together in high
school, it wasn’t until Jim self-recorded an EP in the spring of 2009 under the moniker ‘Young Buffalo’ (a nickname he had for Ben at
school) that the band was truly born. The duo’s eclectic personal tastes and the fact that both songwriters are proficient at a variety
of instruments has resulted in a sound that is both accessible and thoughtfully progressive.
This new EP will serve as a rebirth of sorts for the band, and with the quality it exudes; their patient approach in getting to this
point seems well worth the wait. Make sure to check them out on select dates this fall, and stay tuned for more details as we
get closer to release date!
