Digging into Spotify recommendations yet again (as opposed to digging in the crates), it’s amazing what you’ll find. Standing out right now in a sparse field of female hip-hop MCs (especially ones that don’t wear neon pink hair and tutus), I recently found Jones St. by singer, drummer, rapper, writer and producer Jill of (almost) all trades Lyric Jones , and loved it. Her jazz, R&B and hip-hop debut album, featuring appearances by Esperanza Spalding, Phife Dawg along with rising artists Aleon Craft, Playboy Tre, J-Live and Young Scolla, provides the perfect “cruising in your whip” (or pretending to cruise but more like being stuck in traffic) soundtrack.
