Since sometime in 2012 last year, fans have been anticipating a joint mixtape from Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y. All that we know so far, fueled primarily by speculative tweets, is that both artists have been waiting for samples used on the upcoming project to be cleared. Mixtapes have become increasingly important to the hip-hop community over the past half decade, and this could release could become a historic precedent. As you probably already know, mixtapes are released as free music for fans to download, which helps bands to promote.
Many Most contain samples of older, previously recorded music, with new lyrics over old beats. This has now become such big business, now artists are being forced to clear samples even though they are not selling the mixtapes that contain them.
This seems to be the case here. Spitta tweeted out that plans have changed and they will most likely have no choice but to sell this record instead of giving it away for free:
“Honestly with the way the legal beagles r Finna tax us…. #liveinconcert is gonna have to be a retail project… Y’all still down??”
