Watching the Chappelle Show a few years ago for two main reasons- the hilarious sketches pointing out the absurd in our world and their seemingly always dope musical guests, one musical act in particular left a deep lasting impression:Dead Prez. As soon as I saw them perform “Hip-Hop”, I knew they were intellectual rebels using their mics to comment on injustice and the ironic/hypocritical nature of hip-hop and “ghetto” cultures themselves, carrying the torch lit by Gil Scott-Heron and Public Enemy earlier. I immediately sought out their legendary Let’s Get Free album and whatever else I could get my hands on.
Fast forward years later, the universe connected me with M1 of Dead Prez to have an enlightening discussion about their future plans, their connection to Dave Chappelle, the groundbreaking and controversial videos addressing media images in hip-hop, poverty, and oppression and he appearing on Fox News.
