Brazos has premiered two new live videos with musical tastemakers, Braund Sound. The high-end Greenpoint studio filmed the band performing lead single “How the Ranks Was Won” as well as “Charm” from upcoming album Saltwater. Lead guitairst, singer and main mind behind Brazos, Martin Crane suffuses each track with energy and charisma, backed by Spencer Zahn on bass and Ian Chang on drums.Brazos’ new album, Saltwater, was created after Crane returned home to Austin from touring only to find himself at a creative dead end. “Most of my good friends had moved away. I was working at a phone bank and I was hanging out in bars a lot. I’d lost touch with the meaningful things.”
Eventually, Crane packed everything he owned into a 1990 Honda Civic station wagon and moved to New York. Over a two year period, he wrote 30-odd songs which were then narrowed down to the nine on Saltwater. As a result, Crane says, “I think this record is about learning how to be alone. It’s an odyssey out into deep solitude in order to really get a grasp of myself. And I think that’s how it’s spiritual. You can’t actually love anything if you need it.” The result of that voyage is an album that is sharp and bright, full of buoyant, expansive pop, crafted by an exceptionally steady and talented hand.
Brazos will play several shows in his former hometown of Austin next week during SXSW before returning to Brookyln for a residency at Cameo Gallery. A full set of dates is listed below. Saltwater will be released on May 28, 2013 on Dead Oceans.
