When a band that’s been around for 20+ years replaces its frontman with a singer from an active group (who are apparently working on a new album of their own), is it considered a supergroup, a simple lineup change, or something completely new? That’s no doubt what Stone Temple Pilots fans are asking themselves after the events of this past weekend. STP made surprise appearances at two California festivals, KROQ’s Weenie Roast and Live 105’s BFD, where they debuted new member Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.
If the sight of the bespectacled rapper yelling into a megaphone for “Dead & Bloated” wasn’t shocking enough, they also played a brand new song called “Out of Time”, which they subsequently released as a free download. It’s classic aggressive STP, with Bennington doing a pretty good job copping Scott Weiland’s vocal style rather than that nu metal crap he’s been dishing out with Linkin Park for the past dozen or so years.
Just kidding; I actually think “Out of Time” is kinda good, but am infinitely more impressed over how both camps (three if you include Weiland) were able to keep this a secret and genuinely surprise people – Curious to see what this leads to and what the future holds for STP minus Weiland, as this seems to be anything but a one-off!
