As we mark hip-hop’s 40th anniversary, few would debate Souls of Mischief’s influence and impact repping Oakland, West Coast hip-hop and the MC craft in general. Commemorating their own milestone this summer, they’re celebrating their landmark 93’ Til Infinity album , which some say defined a generation and sits atop several top hip-hop album lists, with a 20th Anniversary tour. For the past few weeks, Opio, Tajai, Phesto and A-Plus became road warriors, playing to crowds in 50 cities. Pivotal members of the Hieroglyphics crew, who collectively dropped The Kitchen on their own label recently, being the “group within the group” no doubt shapes its overall identity.
Blessed to connect with Souls of Mischief on the road in North Carolina a few weeks ago, we chatted about their childhoods, the raging debate on classic vs. new hip-hop longevity, their fav songs and owning their Imperium HQ (to which I luckily scored an invite and hopefully will take them up on the offer). West Coast, get more info on the rest of their 20th Anniversary tour dates and which cities they’ll be hitting here !
