Randomly catching my ear a few weeks ago, “Ha Ha Ha” off The Julie Ruin’s brand new EP , Run Fast is punk with 60’s retro influences at its finest. Determined to discover who was behind this infectious tune, I uncovered the culprits were legendary Riot Grrrl maven Kathleen Hanna’s band The Julie Ruin featuring an assortment of talented musicians including guitarist Sara Landeau. Piling onto the growing mainstream buzz and rave reviews coming in, they’ll be performing on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Show this week, along with a concert run playing at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, further signaling The Julie Ruin won’t be “stop stopping” anytime soon.
Meeting Kathleen at a rock camp for girls in Brooklyn, Sara, pictured far right above, is a vital member of the band and I chatted with her recently about her music school, The Brooklyn Guitar and Drum Studio for Women & Girls, working at the legendary spot CGBGs in NY for 10 years, studying at Julliard in her 20’s, who’d play at a punk festival she’d throw at 15 years old, the concept behind the new album and more.
