Press Release Roundup: September 9

posted September 9, 2013, 3:59 pm by Brian Rutherford | Filed Under Music News | comment 2 Comments

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire is back, and not only is their first single hot, but the interactive video process is dope!

Chasing Mars

Instead of just printing CD’s, cassettes, vinyl, or mp3’s Chasing Mars decided that on October 1st they’re going to release their song (“Take You For Granted”) as a T-Shirt Single with all proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House to help kids who need it most!

These aren’t just your run of the mill t-shirts. On top of having each limited edition shirt designed by artists they love, each shirt will also contain a QR code and a link that will take you to a free download of our new single. The shirts will be limited to one pressing only and after that they’re never going to re-print them.

St. Lucia

Brooklyn-based synth-pop outfit St. Lucia has unveiled a brand new song from their forthcoming full-length debut, When The Night. The song’s intense electronics highlight the more experimental/dance tendencies of the band, previously revealed in songs like 2012’s “September.” When The Night is available October 8 via Neon Gold/Columbia.

This week, St. Lucia plays two special, full-album preview shows—the first of which was last night at The Echo in Los Angeles, followed by San Francisco’s Rickshaw tomorrow, September 12. Both shows sold out in a matter of hours. In addition, St. Lucia will join Two Door Cinema Club on tour this fall, with dates kicking off October 2 at Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre and continuing through mid-November (see itinerary below).

St. Lucia is featured in the latest iteration of Spotify’s “Emerge” program. The program highlights ten developing artists and tracks their Spotify streams and social media interactions, crowning a “winner” at the end of a 6-week period. Previous winners include Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Atlas Genius and Bastille.

Produced by the band’s own Jean-Philip Grobler, When The Night expands upon St. Lucia’s unique brand of dreamy, nostalgic pop, with additional production and mixing from Chris Zane (Passion Pit), Rich Costey (Muse, Foo Fighters) and Andy Baldwin. St. Lucia has previously released two EPs—2012’s September EP and self-titled EP.

Coming on the heels of his Immersive Music Mixtape Side One. Lorin Ashton, better known to the world as Bassnectar, will release his latest single “Take You Down” on September 24. The single will come packaged with three other tracks that have yet to see a proper release.

“Take You Down” is an airy track of pulsing chords, emotive synths and driving 808’s that make this an instant Bassnectar classic. An alternate West Coast Lo Fi mix is also included. “Expanded”, made with ill.Gates has been a live staple and moves much like a film score with ethereal interludes and plenty of beats and bass, as well as being featured on the Immersive Music Mixtape Side One. The sonically brutal “Raw Charles” was included on “Here Come The Bastards” remix Bassnectar did for Primus. “Colorstorm” was originally the centerpiece of the Colorstorm mixtape, and now it sees a life of its own on this special release. “‘Take You Down’ was put together as a summertime jam, something deep, lush and euphoric. “I started it while I was on vacation, and the general theme is basically falling in love and that slow motion feeling you get when you plunge backwards into something overwhelming, but never hit the ground. I like releasing it as a single, but giving 5 distinct tracks for the [Bass]heads,” says Ashton.

Rob Zombie

In just four weeks, Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare–the ultimate Halloween music and horror event–will open its doors at FEARPlex in Pomona, just outside Los Angeles. In the meantime, check out an exclusive video for a preview of the most exciting and horrifying attractions from Rob Zombie here:

Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare will be held every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from October 10-November 2. Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare will feature 15 nights of music, culminating with a November 2 headlining performance by Rob Zombie himself. This bone-chilling experience will combine the most advanced haunted house attractions with a not-to-be-missed music festival from top artists in the realms of hard rock/metal, rock alternative, EDM, and Latin music. Each Thursday night will feature rock alternative music, Fridays EDM, most Saturdays will feature hard rock/metal, and most Sundays will be Latin music focused.

In addition to Rob Zombie, Great American Nightmare music performances will include: 3OH!3, 45 Grave, Andrew W.K., Beware Of Darkness, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Blood On The Dance Floor, Butcher Babies, DirtyLoud, Dirtyphonics, DJ Bl3nd, Doctor P, Duane Peters, Eagles Of Death Metal, Emilie Autumn, Evol Intent, Fei-Fei, Ghost Town, Goldfinger, HeavyGrinder, Kottonmouth Kings, Metalachi, Mod Sun, One More Time (Daft Punk Tribute), Ozomatli, Powerman 5000, Reel Big Fish, TSOL, Terravita, The Dickies, The Used, The Vandals, Twiztid, Vampires Everywhere, Wallpaper, William Control, Winds Of Plague, and Zomboy. One night will also feature pro-wrestling sensations Lucha Libre USA.

Please visit for more details and the full list of music performances by date.

The FEARplex for Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare will include 150,000 square feet of horror and entertainment and is not geared towards young children or the faint of heart. Patrons should be prepared for maximum scares!

At Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare, patrons will sequentially enter three different attractions, each completely different in look, theme and effects:

Lords Of Salem In Total Black Out: This harrowing attraction–based on Zombie’s 2012 The Lords Of Salem independent horror film–is designed to twist the mind. It will accentuate some senses while limiting others. Fear of the dark, claustrophobia, and fear of the unknown will be preyed on as the visitor attempts to traverse this sixty-degree maze.

The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto 3D: Utilizing Chromadepth glasses, this innovative attraction will take the patron right into the middle of the irreverent world of Rob Zombie’s El Superbeasto 2009 animated exploitation musical horror comedy film based on the comic book series of the same name. The attraction’s unique surprise entrance, brilliant colors, sudden chills and startling thrills, and salacious humor will make one scream with fright and laughter.

Haunt Of 1,000 Corpses: This terrifying attraction pays homage to the 10-year anniversary of the exploitation horror film House Of 1,000 Corpses, directed by Rob Zombie. This extreme, traditional haunted house will take visitors on a walking journey through a recreation of the film’s “Museum of Monsters & Madmen” along with an expanded “Murder Ride,” confronting notorious serial killers along the way. This high impact, highly detailed attraction will use state of the art animatronics, video effects, costuming, sound, scents and lights.

Fullerton, California’s The Slidebar has partnered with Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare to host the Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare Battle Of The Bands live local music showcase this September and October. Unsigned talent will have a chance to compete for a chance to play the Monster Energy Main Stage on one night of Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare. To enter the competition, bands should email by September 13, 2013. Each entry should include: Band Name, Genre, Facebook Page, Twitter, Contact Name, and Contact Email. Bands will be chosen from these entries to perform at the weekly battles, each featuring five bands. Also visit the SlideBLOG at for more details.

Katey Laurel

-Singer-Songwriter Katey Laurel Releases New Single “Hurricane”
-Upcoming new album “Periscope” produced by Warren Huart

(Denver, CO) September 10, 2013 – Pop/folk singer-songwriter Katey Laurel is announcing the release of her new single “Hurricane” now available via iTunes. An official video for the single will be out by the end of September via Katey’s Youtube channel ( “Hurricane” is being released in advance of Katey’s upcoming full-length album Periscope, produced by recording industry veteran Warren Huart (The Fray, Aerosmith) and slated for an early 2014 release.

Presented with a solid, radio-friendly hook guaranteed to stay in the listener’s mind long after the song is over, “Hurricane” delves into the idea of finding the “eye of the storm” amid the chaos and struggles of relationships. The topic fits well with the overarching theme of Periscope, which explores the dichotomy and tension between struggle and hope in which life is lived. Recorded at Harmony and Spitfire Studios in Los Angeles, the upcoming album and its first single easily represent Laurel’s most poignant and accessible work to date.

As a songwriter, Katey has won or placed in numerous songwriting competitions around the country (including the Tucson Folk Festival and the Great American Song Contest). Her songs have been well received by Triple A radio stations around the country and have garnered multiple film, television and advertisement placements. As a performer, she has shared the stage with the likes of Howie Day, Katie Herzig, Matt Morris, Bill Mallonee, Trevor Hall and others.

Black Taxi

No Shame is very excited to announce the release of Black Taxi’s new EP Chiaroscuro! You can find the album available on all digital outlets and digi-pack CD through the No Shameonline store.

“Blending 80′s art-rock, synth-pop, and a straight up indie rock chug, the band pours these genres together into a giant boiling cauldron of influences and come away with something that takes the best of each and leaves the rest to die by the wayside…” – Beats Per Minute.

Visit the No Shame official events page for upcoming tour dates from Black Taxi.

Paper Lions

Prince Edward Island’s Paper Lions released their new record My Friends on August 20 across North America via their own label imprint Fountain Pop Records, to much fanfare from music press “it feels appropriate that My Friends comes out near the end of summer,” noted PopMatters “because its wistful power-pop evokes mental images of that time of year, its sun-dappled sound set off just so by tinges of melancholy shadowing.”

NOW reviewed, “from John MacPhee’s falsetto vocals to the Beach Boys harmonies burnishing the choruses, Bodies In the Winter leads off with catchy riffs that recall Phoenix, while My Friend rides a slinky 70s groove for maximum earworm potential.” And, Exclaim! claimed of the band’s live show; “It’s hard to think of a pop group any tighter than the MacPhee brothers and company, let alone one as fully in command of their instruments.”

Album namesake single My Friend has been a top five track on the CBC Radio3 chart for the last five weeks and today their performance video for the song is premiering exclusively via AUX in Canada and Baeble Music in the U.S.. Shot near Charlottetown’s waterfront and part of the Seaport Session video series of new album tracks from the band, beautifully captured by director Millefiore Clarkes, My Friend’s lyrics clasp tightly to the nostalgia of long ago friends.

Colin Buchanan of Paper Lions said of the performance video for My Friend; “We got together with good friend and fellow Belfast native Mille Clarkes and sure, disco balls have been done before but they are just too damn fun!”

Paper Lions are today confirming an extensive run of upcoming tour dates – almost 40 shows over the next few months across North America. Teaming up with Octopus Project, Teenage Kicks and Fossil Collective for a number of the shows, full dates follow below with the Canadian stops bolded.

Rural Ghosts

Rural Ghosts has always been a project about change and evolution. The group has been through multiple iterations since its inception in 2012, beginning as a largely-acoustic bedroom recording experiment from Lorem Ipsum Recordings’ founder Erik Neilson (tenor guitar/vocals). Active lines and melodies came with the addition of cellist Devon Colella, and the rhythmic intricacies and energy of drummer Robert lent the group a more driving, electric sound.

Rural Ghosts has gradually expanded over time, with Brendan Tompkins replacing Mitchell on drums and the addition of Oliver Waterman’s eclectic bass stylings, resulting in sounds unlike anything currently being heard in indie rock. Haunting lyrical content, driving rhythms and a penchant for melody typify the sound of their latest release City of Elms, recorded, mixed and produced entirely by Neilson and Colella.

City of Elms will be available in MP3 & CD format on Lorem Ipsum Recordings via Bandcamp on October 1st, 2013.

Devon Colella – Cello, Bass
