As a music connoisseur, I’m proud to be a Bay Area music supporter. Blessed to speak with several of my favorite unique crews and tribes over the past two years, there’s an obvious deep respect for Bay hip-hop flavor you can’t find anywhere else. One group at the top of my list is Latyrx (comprised of duo Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker), affiliated with the Quannum Projects label (including Blackalicious and DJ Shadow) collective, who will drop The Second Album (title speaks for itself) today. Known for their genre-bending style, this new album does not disappoint and remains true to their signature.
Speaking with Lateef prior to a short tour run to support the new album, we chatted via phone and Twitter about a variety of topics like his ethnic background (we’re both Black and Puerto Rican), his parents’ Black Panther influences, Quannum’s place among the Hieroglyphics and Living Legends crews (they all went to school together), working on a Grammy-nominated song with Fatboy Slim, his top 5 MCs (Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, KRS-one, Ice Cube and Too $hort) his teen dream fest (which along others would include MJ, Prince, Mix Master Spade, Bambaata and Herbie Hancock) and more.
