On The Verge Interview: Fat Tony

If you Google the words Fat Tony, you will most likely come up with images of a shady cartoon character from The Simpsons. Keep searching though and you will find an up and coming hip-hop force to be reckoned with from Houston, TX.

We first discovered the emerging artist when researching bands appearing at Fun Fun Fun Fest. He is currently preparing his as of yet untitled second album and a mixtape, both produced by Tom Cruz (Shaka Girvan). The mixtape will feature two upcoming singles “Good While It Lasted” and “Bad Habits” featuring Bun B and Nicholas Thorburn of Islands / Mister Heavenly / The Unicorns. He was among one of the first artists chosen to appear at SXSW 2012,  and has won the 2010, 2009 and 2008 Houston Press Music Awards’ Best Underground Hip Hop award.

We were able to meet him, smoke him out, and interview the MC during Fun Fun Fun Fest.   Read more

Enter Shikari, the 4 piece British post-hardcore outfit, are gearing up to release their third studio album. They blew away any notion of a sophomore slump, proving they have staying power. A Flash Flood of Colour is set to come out on January 17th, and you can pre-order it from iTunes right now:

I was able to interview guitar player Liam “Rory” Clewlow at the end of last summer, after they were through with Van’s Warped Tour. I became an instant fan after discovering them, and thought it would be a good idea to keep in touch. This time I was able to catch up with Roughton “Rou” Reynolds, the lead vocalist, to get some music recommendations.

First post of the new year! Ok, ok so it’s 2012 and you are probably tired of seeing best of lists already. Well we worked hard on this list and hope you dig it anyway. We have 3 of our correspondents, including myself, who are avid concert goers compile this list. And like most, we begin by struggling to come up with 10 then by the end actually have way more and struggle to narrow it down to only 10! It was so hard to choose, between us this year we have seen Blink-182, Cloud Nothings, Fleet Foxes, Death From Above 1979, Curren$y, Social Distortion, Kurt Vile, Seether, A Day To Remember, Ghostland Observatory, Reptar, Cold War KidsBig K.R.I.T., Neon Indian, The Flaming Lips, Slayer, Modest MouseAsher Roth, and way more. So here are our picks for the Top 10 Live Shows Of 2011!

Carina’s picks (photos and video courtesy of Carina Contreras)

1. Bonnaroo Music Festival: Being up front in the pit for The Black Keys, Eminem and Arcade Fire made the 14+ bus ride to Tennessee worth it. Matt and Kim probably had one of the best sets at the show.
Festival Highlights: Florence + the Machine, Wiz Khalifa, Bassnectar, Band of Skulls, Explosions in the Sky, Robyn

Sunday’s Best: Foo Fighters

Back in the day, when this place was crawling with forums and chats about random acts of music, we used to poll ourselves to see which release by an artist not only set them atop of the industry but stapled them in as musical gods.

Our focus this week is on one of my favorite bands, Foo Fighters. 2011 was an incredible year for this group, as they went back to their roots to record their newest record. Wasting Light was one one my personal top 10 picks for best records of the year. Dave Grohl filled in on drums for Cage The Elephant on tour, they reunited with Nevermind producer Butch Vig, and even did a small contest tour where they played in the home garages of lucky fans. In even more recent news, The Fighters and their 50,000 fans in New Zealand literally caused the earth to shake! Finally, their documentary Back And Forth, debuted at SXSW this past year and is a must see.

What is the best Foo Fighters record of all time? Let us know your favorite by voting and leaving comments!

I lost track of how many shows that I went to this year, more than ever before though. Good thing I had my video camera handy for most of them. I didn’t pick these clips because they were my favorite, or because there was anything special or unique about them. I simply went through our list, and picked those with the most views. The only exception is that I didn’t include any duplicates, so once a band once on this list, I didn’t add them a 2nd time.   Also, these clips are all live footage, I didn’t include any interviews.  So here are our Top 15 Live Concert Videos Of 2011, chosen from our YouTube page. You can find all of these clips and a ton more (over 200 now!) at

1. BOTDF, Vans Warped Tour, June 2011

This was our first time being introduced to this band. Not only did we not know who they were, we hadn’t planned on watching their set early that day in the blistering Texas heat. Their passionate performance, along with the intensity and responsiveness from the crowd quickly changed our minds. This is our most highly viewed video, with over 23,000 hits. We also have another video from them which is still our 2nd highest rated, with over 13,000 views.

2. Grieves, Vans Warped Tour, 2011

Another performance from the kickoff to Vans Warped Tour this past summer. We were tipped off to the hot young hip-hop star thanks to a brief article in Spin. You can also watch our video interview with him, which already has over 9,000 views, one of our most.

3. Kurt Vile & The Violators, SXSW, March 2011

Every Friday we feature a music video in a feature called Video Of The Week. It’s always fun to watch a classic video from one of your favorite artists, or to watch a new video from a new band. Some of the videos listed here were featured as our video of the week during the past year, while others were just discovered later. Video killed the radio star a couple decades ago, and forever changed music and the industry as we know it. And now with access to the internet, smart phones and iPads, and YouTube, nearly anyone can become an overnight sensation. These range from the animated to the exotic, they will make you laugh, cry, and experience every emotion in between–hope you enjoy! Let us know which you like best, or which videos you think we left off that should be on the list.

1. Tyler The Creator – “Yonkers

Conceived and directed himself, it was filmed By Luis Panch Perez. This iconic video became an instant classic, putting Tyler on the map. It also won him Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. Oh yeah, and it has over 30 million views.

2. Kreayshawn – “Gucci Gucci

This was another instance of a star being born overnight. Barely anyone knew who this white girl rapper was before dropping this single, which also landed her a record deal. Kreayshawn made the move from making videos to making making music, and it has gained 29 million views since it was first uploaded this summer. It was directed by @JOSEPHZENTIL, and produced by @STRANGEARMAND.

3. Toro Y Moi – “How I Know
