One of my favorite releases this year was from a band I was only introduced to this year, Young Buffalo. The young Mississippi group signed to Fat Possum, toured opening for Arctic Monkeys, and released their phenomenal EP Young Von Prettylips. They were originally scheduled to play CMJ, but one of their members left the band due to his wife having a baby. More recently they gained 2 new members for their live set-up, and released a new song, called “Baby Demons” (see this link). By the way, in case you didn’t know, member Jim Barrett is the brother of John Barrett, the frontman of another Mississippi/Fat Possum band, Bass Drum Of Death.

Here is a list of what they are currently listening to, and have been during 2011. There are also some of their all time favorites listed here as well: Read more

Even though I’m a huge fan of Mac Miller, I don’t think anyone, even Mac himself, could ever have predicted how great of a year he has had. He’s been gaining attention everywhere lately it seems, after Blue Slide Park was the #1 record, moving over 150,000 copies in its first week. The most recent place he has received attention is at Forbes. They pose the question: is he indie music’s Savior?

As a featured person on the 2012 Forbes 30 Under 30 list, the legendary institution sat down with Malcolm for a brief interview. Watch as the 19-year-old rapper reveals the secrets behind his rapid rise, the inspiration for his music videos, and why he doesn’t want to sign with a major record label any time soon.  You can read the article here.

One of the young, emerging bands we were fortunate enough to discover this year is Reptar. The four piece from Atlanta released their first EP, Oblangle Fizz Y’All, toured as opening support for both Phantogram and Foster The People, and even played Lollapalooza and ACL. I was able to catch up with the guys backstage a few weeks ago when they were opening for Phantogram. We discussed music genres, the Georgia music scene, and of course we played a round of Urban Dictionary Quiz. You can listen to our interview below:
