Person : “What’d you do this weekend?” Me: “I went to The NAMM Show”. NAMM Show. Even the title is boss. Hearing about this convention through my indie musician peeps over the years, my curiosity piqued and 2014 finally afforded me the opportunity to attend as a nerdy observer. Bringing together thousands of diverse music vendors and artists of virtually every genre with events happening every hour, my head swirled with possibilities. The latest faders, guitars (I’d never seen so many different types),portable microphones, pianos, drum kits, keyboards, amps, banjos, digital recorders (I paid extra attention to these), ukuleles, loop pedals, speakers, mixers and music apps you can use to virtually play all of the above were all there for sampling, causing several impromptu jam sessions on the convention floors.

Besides the booth and room performances from artists like guitarists Andy McKee and Felix Martin (loved Ernie Ball’s booth with carnival games), folks could get autographs from Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Ex-Misfits’ Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein , bump into George Clinton, Ledisi or Maceo from De La Soul walking around. Oh, and attendees could hear DJs like The Beat Junkies’ DJ Melo D on the Pioneer stage, venture over to the Go Pro stage outside to listen to Sheila E and Jonny Lang and nearby Marriott and Hilton hotels to hear rising artists like Cory Joseph Clark and his Long Beach Blues Army. My ears gave plenty of props to NAMM for a great experience.

Check out the interview soundclips below of Andy McKee (hear us chat about jamming with Prince), DJ Melo D (listen to us chat about the 90’s hip-hop scene), Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (hear us talking about being a label boss), Felix Martin (listen to us talk about playing with Steve Vai) and Cory Joseph Clark (listen to his thoughts on the LB music scene)!
