Review: Hiero Day 2015

As I reviewed my Labor Day celebration options, one clear choice stood out above the others. Back for its fourth year, I knew Oakland’s Hiero Day would provide the last hip-hop hurrah needed to end the summer off properly. Hiero Day, only an hour flight from LA, provided a West Coast oasis. On a hot, sunny day, thousands packed the streets to sample wares (the paella was amazing) and supported community vendors and booths, selling a variety of fest gear. Splitting the acts between three stages in the alleyways which featured hosts like Ed Lover, Mistah Fab and DNAs, showgoers trekked between each, listening to DJs like House Shoes, Oakland Faders’ DJ Platurn, Beat Junkies DJ Rhettmatic and Hiero’s own DJ Toure in between each set.

Interspersed between the music, I visited the mini skate park, viewed graffiti artists at work (bonus spotted Raphael Saadiq in the crowd) and watched beboys and girls dance in the street. Throughout the day, I also peeped Adrian Younge (who should be in this year’s Producer Of The Year convos), Res (who repped for the ladies on the main stage), Sempervirens (chatted with Free The Robots a few weeks ago recently about this project), PB Wolf (Stones Throw had a strong outing), Zion I and of course, The Hieroglyphics (great to have the rare opportunity to see them all together). Props for a dope event thrown by one of the best collectives ever!
