As I happily prepared to settle into hermit behavior this past weekend, it was going to take a natural disaster, lack of internet or a pretty dope event to tear me away from #Couchella. The idea of viewing artists live I’d never seen with air conditioning, indoor plumbing and lack of sweaty douchebags stood ever appealing. Yet Pandora enticed me away for a moment with the promise of a dope party DJed by SoSuperSam and Questlove. I’d seen both DJ before (SoSuperSam locally in LA at Club Nokia and Questlove at last year’s Silent Disco at The Life Is Beautiful Fest in Vegas) so I knew a good time lie ahead.

I arrived at the Cree Estate a few miles away from Coachella in Cathedral City and could already hear Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” being played by Questlove, blasting from the parking lot. When I rolled into the cozy party, it was already in full swing, with alot taking place in all corners. Hair braiding, ping-pong playing, a cute pool filled with Pandora beach-balls, see-saws, snow cones which turned my lips red, hors d’oeuvres with a hosted bar that misted you as you walked by…yeah, this was a great decision. Classic soul, hip-hop (like Outkast and Biggie) and reggae (like Tenor Saw and Sister Nancy) blaring from the speakers put me in a good mood as I chilled and people watched. Seeing Black Thought there and bumping into ZZ Ward (who I first interviewed in 2013 and who has another album coming later this year) was a bonus.
