Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

Neurotic November

Neurotic November vocalist Dee Dee (Dirty) comments, “We wanted everything about Anunnaki to be 10 times better than our EP. The fast parts are faster, the instrumentals are beefier, and we definitely upped the ante. We can’t wait to deliver this live.”

Comprised of vocalist Dirty, bassist Bear, Yoshii and Nig on guitar, and Paiste on drums, the members of Neurotic November come from all walks of life and value free-thinking and open-mindedness above all else. Their backflips, unparalleled conviction, and obvious passion work together to create an unforgettable live experience, and their professionalism breeds spotless musicianship.

Dirty says “The word ‘Anunnaki’ is from ancient Sumerian mythology and it loosely means ‘came from the stars’. There is no better way to explain our sound than to tell you that it is out of this world. We are aliens and revel in what makes us different.”

Officially beginning their journey in 2009, Neurotic November began humbly with Dirty (vocals) posting an ad inquiring about a bassist for his band that had immense potential. Almost immediately his search was fulfilled with the addition of Bear, female bassist who quickly trademarked her aggressive playing style and tough-guy attitude. These two musicians with a dream suffered through multiple line-up changes in order to successfully release their EP Passive May in 2012, which showcased the never-ending energy and exhilarating song structures that began their steady climb towards the top of the metal scene.

Ezra Vine

NEW YORK, NY (June 24, 2013) – Ezra Vine is a multi-instrumentalist obsessed with escapism, indulging his melodic fantasies among handclaps, and the waltz of bass drums.

Debut single ‘Celeste’, is an infectious celebration of anticipation, combining an ear-worm acoustic riff with an army of floor toms, Beach Boys backing vocals, Miike Snow piano clusters, and a lilting, Shins-like vocal. Vine’s love for ambiguous Cohen-style lyrics mashes with immediate imagery (Brian Wilson anybody?) resulting in an energetic tune that is sure as heck to get you dancing. In Vine’s own words, Celeste is ‘an exploration of optimism, confusion, and the often blurred lines between reality and desire.’

Recorded in a small bedroom in late 2012, armed only with one microphone, a Macbook and any instrument he could lay his hands on, Vine meticulously recorded each and every instrument, breathing life into a handful of tunes that would soon become unofficially dubbed the ‘Les Enfants EP’. The resulting work was a collision of immediate lyricism, haunting falsetto, and counter-melodies, woven through folk sensibilities.

Testing the waters, Vine released a handful of tunes somewhat unannounced on Bandcamp in early 2013 under the moniker ‘Les Enfants’ and word slowly began to spread. On Bandcamp, Vine found an appreciative and thoughtful audience that helped propel the collection to regularly claim a top ten spot among Bandcamp’s bestsellers for the Folk category.

Seattle, Nov. 4, 2013 – Mogwai, who recently announced the release of their eighth studio album, Rave Tapes, on Jan. 21 via Sub Pop, have confirmed an extensive Spring tour of North America (dates listed below).

The Scottish quintet gave fans an early listen to music from Rave Tapes last week, streaming the single “Remurdered” via Sub Pop’s Soundcloud ( Pitchfork described the single as “night shivers coupled with blocky electronics,” adding that the track “heads down a mazy path while the volume gradually increases, ultimately peaking in a mesh of criss-crossing synthetic textures.”

Rave Tapes was recorded over the summer in the band’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow and reunites the band with Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will Co-Producer Paul Savage.

JF Robitaille

New Music Video For “Black & White” Out Now!

JF Robitaille is a born storyteller. But ask any of the canonized—Dylan, Kerouac, Scorcese—and they’ll tell you the same thing: storytelling and human experience are inseparable. And that, perhaps, is why Rival Hearts’ narratives feel so vividly authentic—his folk songs are painted with uncut globs of humanity.

Robitaille explored folkier territories with his acclaimed 2011 album, Calendar. It was intimate yet accessible, poetic sans pretension, and brainy without feeling academic—and it established Robitaille as one of Canada’s best songwriters. No, we’re not exaggerating: Critics have whispered his name alongside genre giants, from Bob Dylan, to Lou Reed, to fellow Montrealer Leonard Cohen.

But in the years since Calendar’s release—spent largely on the road, performing high-profile gigs at CMJ, NXNE, Pop Montreal and the Halifax Pop Explosion, amongst others—Robitaille has blossomed from one of the nation’s top emerging talents to one of its best songwriters. Period.

Rival Hearts is JF’s ambitious debut on Sparks Music. Recorded at Prescott, Ontario’s House of Miracles, a legendary studio that birthed seminal releases from the Hidden Cameras and Royal City, Rival Hearts has Robitaille finding a singular voice—one built around wide-screen optimism, seamless songwriting, and neon-lit nuance. Produced by Andy Magoffin (The Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers), Robitaille recruited drummer Marshall Bureau (Jim Guthrie), bassist Tavo Diez de Bonilla (Jenn Grant) and multi-instrumentalist J.J. Ipsen (Octoberman) to sculpt the sonic settings for Rival Hearts—sombre pianos, haunting organs, and plaintive trumpets paint the pitch-perfect backdrop, whether he’s ambling through the fruit stands on Montreal’s Parc Avenue or recalling the rusted façades of Coney Island.

Yet when Rival Hearts is given the chance to simmer, Robitaille’s true charm emerges: Without leaning on well-worn folk clichés, he’s a master at capturing raw—and very real—emotion. Robitaille’s sanguine yearning feels almost like Leonard Cohen covering Lou Reed’s Transformer, or Robyn Hitchcock fronting Modern Lovers. It’s timeless. Personal. Universal. Because Rival Hearts is about, well, rival hearts—the heartbreak that occurs when roots are pulled in different directions. And that experience is, if nothing else, universal.

Rival Hearts was released on August 27th 2013,
through Sparks Music and Universal Music Canada.

As Erasure, the iconic synth-pop duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell prepare for the release of their forthcoming album, Snow Globe, due out November 11th via Mute, the group is streaming the new album via USA Today. Check out the Q&A with vocalist Andy Bell and listen to the full album here.

Snow Globe, a collection of original compositions and seasonal classics follows Erasure’s 2011 album, Tomorrow’s World. The First single “Gaudete” is Erasure’s take on the traditional Latin carol, which will be recognizable by many after Steeleye Span’s version of the early 70’s. Erasure created a series of unique and beautiful stop animation videos with Martin Meunier (James & The Giant Peachand Coraline) and Tonya Hurley, author of the best-selling ghostgirl and The Blessed. Watch the dark and beautiful stop-motion animation clip for “Gaudete” the new video for the first single off of Snow Globe HERE.

Unlike the bells and whistles, glitter and tinsel sets that crowd the market come Christmas-time, Snow Globeis possessed of something more in the wistfully, strangely subdued celebratory mold of recent seasonal albums by Tracey Thorn and Kate Bush.

Formed 28 years ago, Erasure–the award-winning songwriting duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell–unleashed on the nation a succession of both influential and chart-topping pop anthems of the ‘80’s, ‘90’s and through today. Songs like “A Little Respect,” “Sometimes,” “Victim Of Love,” “Ship Of Fools,” “Blue Savannah,” “Star,” “Chains Of Love,” “Who Needs Love (Like That),” “Love To Hate You,” “Drama!,” “Always,” and “Breathe” ensured a formidable presence on the singles charts complemented by five consecutive # 1 albums in the U.K. including The Innocents, Wild!, Chorus and the beginning of the worldwide Abba revival Abba-esque.
