For anyone perusing singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata’s bio mentioning she “named her label after a walking fish”, “got run over by a bull” and did a video “in full bunny attire” on her website, what’s not to like? Charming fans with a mix of highs and lows since her first classic release ‘Happenstance’ 10 years ago, she’s written many heartwrenching relatable songs, all the while being able to poke fun at herself live. Currently wrapping up her recent tour with opening acts Hemming and The Dove and The Wolf, celebrating the release of her debut ‘Happenstance’ and previewing songs from her Pledge Music funded next album, it’s been a good year.

I caught up with Rachael making her way to her next tour stop in Canada a few weeks ago to chat about this current tour, surprising things about herself and future plans. Get tix to catch her on tour in Europe here , get more info on her album campaign and feel free to pledge here!

How’s your tour going?

It’s been really fun, a giant troupe of people with 8 people in our crew. We’ve got a party of folks on this tour. We’ve been out for 11 days and we’re off to a really good start. I’ve been mixing it up with old and new material and in six cities we’re doing two shows where one show, we’re playing my first record, ‘Happenstance’ all the way through.

Is there anything in your music collection that you’d be embarrassed to admit you have?

I have some guilty pleasures. I think we’re all a fan of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” song. (laughing) I like a few songs by Miley Cyrus and am in general a fan of fun songs with interesting production. I’m not embarrassed but people might be surprised I listen to those.

What’s been your biggest “WTF” moment?

Playing Madison Square Garden was definitely a moment where I couldn’t believe I was there. That was pretty WTF.

What would someone be surprised to know about you?

Well I’m pretty much a hermit who lives in the middle of nowhere so I love things that have to do with the home. Also, if you’re ever lost in the woods and need a survival guide, I’m your girl.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened while being on tour?

My opening band keeps taking selfies with me in the background and I’m not aware I’m getting my picture taken. That’s the latest embarrassing thing happening. (laughing) I’m also always forgetting lyrics. That’s a normal part of everyday life but it makes for a fun experience in the audience.

What’s on your agenda for the end of 2014, into 2015?

A lot of finishing the new record which will be out around next February and March. I’ve been running a Pledge Music campaign to help fund the record so I’ll be doing a lot of stuff with that. I’ll also be recording an acoustic version of ‘Happenstance’ and then going on tour in Germany and then maybe Asia. A lot of traveling in the future. It’ll be fun.
