Press Release Roundup: April 1

posted April 2, 2016, 9:49 am by Carlita | Filed Under Music News | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Mayer Hawthorne

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Mayer Hawthorne is releasing his fourth full-length record, Man About Town, on April 8th via Vagrant Records/BMG. Today, fans can stream the record in its entirety on Pandora. Listen here:

On Man About Town, Hawthorne is back to handling the lion’s share of production. He also played damn near every instrument on the album and penned every track. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere. It’s the shit people listen to when they wanna get drunk and stoned and sentimental. The reason? Mayer Hawthorne stays making that timeless, soulful, baby-making music.

Earlier this year, Mayer brought his three bands together (Tuxedo, Jaded Incorporated, Mayer Hawthorne) for two sold out revue shows at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles. For fans that weren’t lucky enough to attend, you can watch the highlights below:

In support of the new record, Mayer will be kicking off his US headline tour on May 4th in Santa Ana at the Observatory. The tour takes Mayer across the states before wrapping up in Las Vegas on July 8th. Fans who purchase tickets to see Mayer live will receive a digital copy of Man About Town upon release on April 8th. A full list of dates can be found below.

Pre-order Man About Town today via iTunes, and receive instant downloads of album tracks ‘Lingerie & Candlewax,’ ‘Love Like That,’ and ‘Cosmic Love.’

The keynote speaker will be Anthony Frazier, founder of The Phat Startup, an integrated media company that produces premium content for all levels of entrepreneurs.

BLOODRED mastermind Ron Merz commented as follows:
“The Hail-Storm” is one of the fastest and brutal songs on the new album. Black and Death Metal blend together to a massive whirlwind of rage in this piece of music. While the guitars shred without mercy, the drums hit you like a thunderstorm. Above all looms the harsh voice foreboding death and destruction. This is accompanied by the lyrics very well. “The Hail-Storm” is based on a poem by George Borrows and describes the mythical sea-battle between two rivaling viking-clans (the poem in return is based on a part of the “Jómsvíkinga saga”). And while the battle is not going well, one captain deceides to sacrifice his son to gain the support of the godess Þorgerðr (anglicized as “Thorgerd”). With her help, the enemy is crushed by gigantic hail and many warriors die.

This song came together pretty fast, I think it only took me a couple of hours to get it done. It was Joris (Nijenhuis) who suggested to write another fast song and I gladly accepted the challenge. This song is quite demanding to play, but the outcome justifies the effort. While the music is a massive I wanted to keep the lyric-video more simple. Thus the listener can immerse himeself more into the music and the lyrics. However the renderings of this ancient battle complement the lyrics very well and add to the atmosphere of the song.”

Phases’ Z Berg and Christy Dawn

LA group PHASES’ own Z Berg has teamed up with designer and friend Christy Dawn Petersen to create several festival-inspired pieces for the designer’s line of sustainably made dresses. They collaborated on a limited edition dress and romper for Christy Dawn, both of which you can see in their exclusive music video for “Cooler”.

Christy Dawn x Z Berg present "Cooler" – Dir: Michael Parks Randa from Michael Parks Randa on Vimeo.

Set to perform with PHASES at Coachella in just a few weeks, Z wanted something unique to wear. “I’ve had this vintage baby doll dress for years,” she said. “It was actually the dress I was wearing when I was signed! But it was falling apart so I called Christy to see if we could create something similar but with a more modern flare.”

“It is really exciting to collaborate with Z on these two pieces,” Christy said. “Z radiates creativity and she’s got such a strong vision. The dress is flirty and feminine and the perfect dress for festival season. The Z Jumper is a head turner. It is exactly the kind of piece you’d imagine you would wear if you were playing on stage in front of thousands of people at a festival in the desert.”

The dress (in 5 color options) and romper (with 3 color options) are both available starting today online and in the Christy Dawn store in Venice, CA.

Fresh off an exciting week at SXSW that earned them praise from Elle, People, and Yahoo Music, PHASES have now announced a hometown show at LA’s The Roxy on May 18, with tickets on sale now. They will continue touring throughout 2016 in support of debut album For Life, including upcoming festival slots at Coachella and Hangout Music Festival as well as a tour with Maroon 5 later this year.

Las Cafeteras

With the escalation of electoral politics, racial tension and the debate over immigration reform amongst Presidential candidates, Las Cafeteras un-apologetically bring a bold sound to provoke thought and encourage debates on and off the dance floor. With a message of love and unity, countering hateful rhetoric from political characters like Donald Trump, Las Cafeteras are taking their music straight to the heart of America with a Spring Tour including 19 dates across the U.S.

Known for creating infectious performances fusing roots music, and modern day storytelling, Las Cafeteras are a band with a message who want to inspire folks to get involved in this important chapter in our country’s history. After an amazing tour in Hawaii and North California, Las Cafeteras hit the road again to the Midwest and East Coast to bang the drum of unity, solidarity and celebration.

Their live shows remixing traditional music and instruments reflects not only the changing face of America’s musical landscape, but the changing face of America. As modern day storytellers, Las Cafeteras are changing the way Mexican, and American music, is heard, played and experienced.

Adam Green

Renowned musician and filmmaker Adam Green shared his first full track and music video from Adam Green’s Aladdin, a hyper-sensory, poetic and humorously subversive take on the Classic Arabian Nights tale, written and directed by Green. The movie features a brand new soundtrack album composed and recorded by Green, who will be kicking off a worldwide ‘Aladdin Tour’ concurrent with the film and album’s release in Spring 2016.

The film is a modern day version of Aladdin, with Green starring as the titular character, and explores the recesses of Green’s symbolic imagination wherein the lamp is a 3-D printer, the princess is a decadent socialite, the planet gets a sex-change and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet.

“With Aladdin, I wanted to create a single and unified experience to showcase my music, art and writing,” said Adam Green. “When creating Aladdin, I approached the script like it was a song. It has been the creative journey of a lifetime, and I’m so excited to put this out!”

The fantasy film stars an ensemble cast featuring some of New York’s biggest arts, music, and film talent, including:

Adam Green – Aladdin

Macaulay Culkin – Ralph the Rebel Leader

Natasha Lyonne – Aladdin’s Mom

Jack Dishel – Uncle Gary / Sultan

Alia Shawkat – Aladdin’s sister

Francesco Clemente – The Genie

Har Mar Superstar – British Druggie Guy

Devendra Banhart – Saucemaker

Bip Ling – the Princess

Zoe Kravitz – Old Miner

The movie was filmed entirely with handmade paper-máche sets, with more than 500 props and 30 rooms constructed out of phone books, newspapers, glue, and house-paint. The satirical odyssey revolves around Aladdin’s dysfunctional family, who live in an ordinary city ruled by a corrupt Sultan and explores themes of technology, government repression, greed and true-love.

Karen Rodriguez

Karen Rodriguez first garnered national attention on season 10 of American Idol back in 2011. Her performances of “Hero” by Mariah Carey, “If You Had My Love” by Jennifer Lopez, “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars, and “No Me Queda Más” by Selena crowned her the first bi-lingual finalist on the show.

Her popularity on American Idol catapulted Karen’s career as a singer-songwriter leading her to sing background vocals on Marc Anthony’s smash single “Vivir Mi Vida” and co-writing three songs with Romeo Santos for his album Formula Vol. 2 (“Odio” featuring Drake, “Trust” featuring Tego Calderón, and “Gone Forever”). In addition, Karen also wrote the Spanish translation of “Somebody” by Natalie La Rose featuring Jencarlos Canela and Kevin Roldan, which they performed at the 2015 Latin American Music Awards.

Karen Rodriguez’s performance at Hispanicize follows a string of successes and media appearances by the singer-songwriter, whose Spanglish cover of Adele’s “Hello” went viral last December becoming the #1 streamed song on Spotify in Latin America, reaching No. 5 on the US iTunes Latino chart, No. 7 on Billboard’s Latin charts and Top 10 on Billboard’s Latin Digital chart. Rodriguez’s renditions of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” have been featured on mass media outlets such as: Latina Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Pop Sugar, Vibe and Refinery 29. Karen’s Spanish cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” was premiered exclusively on SiriusXM’s Viva and Caliente channels this past February.

Hispanicize’s Positive Impact Awards honors Latinos from all corners of the U.S. who dedicate their lives, time and money to ensuring that their communities have access to the resources and support Latinos need to succeed. This year’s moderators include Ismael Cala, anchor and producer for CNN en Español and Yarel Ramos, host of NBC UNIVERSO.

This is the third effort from 26-year-old french electro-metal artist and producer Remi Gallego, showcasing an impressively cohesive genre mash of metal, rock, edm, synthwave and sheer lunacy. ‘Brute Force’ has received an overwhelming positive response from key media outlets all over the world, including Outburn, Metal Underground, Metal Hammer (UK), Rock Sound (UK), and many more. ‘Brute Force’ can be heard streaming in its entirety, here:

On Friday April 1st, the author – composer – singer Voys launched the first video of the musical story « Louise In The Clouds », with the eponym song. This first video will show you the fantasy world of this project which will offer you many surprises in 2016…

A Pop/Rock sound,
alternative & actual

With this first episode, Voys proposes a captivating song started by an obsessive organ melody. The guitar played by the artist takes you into Louise fantasy world, a girl who slowly moves from adolescence to adulthood… In observer Voys reveals with his bluesy voice, Louise innocence who doesn’t know yes all what will happen…

Performed by « Virage Factory », this video will invite you to questioning and contemplation. A disused hangar, a young masked girl, rabbits heads labeled stencil, this video captures the attention and encourages reflection… Louise dream word full of symbols and clues, preserves suspense until the end and makes you want to know the following episodes.

The Hypothesis

The Hypothesis is a modern melodic death metal-act formed during deadly cold winter 2009 in Kouvola, Finland. Nowadays Helsinki-based band swears in the name of heaviness, groove & catchy melodies, still not forgetting the technically played crunchy riffs. The Hypothesis main man Juuso Turkki came up with the band’s name wanting to create an individual state of imagination.

In the year 2009 The Hypothesis recorded an EP carrying the name “Nightshade”. In January 2011 “Nightshade”-EP was followed by 2 singles “Weak Story” and “Shades To Escape”. The Hypothesis had their first line-up changes when a drummer called Rolf Pilve (from Stratovarius) joined the band. With Rolf The Hypothesis recorded their third single, Scarface.

Among successful releases The Hypothesis has conquered many famous festival-stages in Finland such as Nummirock and Qstock. The band qualified as a winner from Finland’s Wacken Metal Battle qualifiers in Qstock-festival. The Hypothesis has also shared stages with melodic death & doom giants like Swallow The Sun, Scar Symmetry, Wolfheart & Before The Dawn. In the fall 2012 The Hypothesis started fresh with entirelly new line-up and locked themselves in the middle of a dark forest of Viitasaari to record their debut-album, “Origin”. After almost four-year-silence The Hypothesis recruited the last new members from Finnish metal scene whom have contributed in bands like Naildown, Paradise Lost, Dimebad Beyond Forever, Dead Shape Figure, Codeon etc..

In 2016, after releasing their first music video “Eye For an Eye” The Hypothesis started their touring year with Wolfheart & Swallow The Sun.

Wolfhorde - Promopic

A Finnish folk metal band Wolfhorde have just released their first official music video. The song “Boundless Agony” is taken from their debut album “Towards The Gate Of North” which was released in January 2016 by Inverse Records.
Check out the music video below!

Surging with the dynamic nature of the track itself, this contemplative clip below explores the interplay between artificial and natural elements. Through experimentation with different textures and fractured light, the clip features minimal after effects and was mostly manipulated during takes using coloured glass. The result is a visual representation of the track’s strikingly eerie sense of lucidity and inner turmoil. The video was a collaboration between Cesar Rodrigues (Director), Tom Chapman (DOP), Ajay Jennings (Creative Director), Memphis Kelly, Lisi Suleman (Makeup) & Tom Glover. The official launch of the video and single will take place on Friday April 1st at Shebeen in Melbourne, with support from Huntly and Martin King.

Angelica Vila

With her single “Making Up My Mind” booming in the mean time on Soundcloud, the visual for 17 year old Angelica Vila’s “Sorry” response to Justin Bieber has surfaced the web. Filmed by Lozer Films, Angelica keeps it simple in her official remix video, setting her high school AND NYC airwaves up in flames; check anytime Funk Flex is on-air for your proof.

Nat Jenkins

The colorful world of Nat Jenkins is a story that can’t be told in one sitting, but before we even start to meander in to that world, here’s the important stuff… Nat Jenkins & The Heartcaves will officially release their new album ‘Back To The Island’ in the UK in April 2016 (through French label Mirador).

Originally hailing from London, Nat Jenkins and long-time collaborator Robbie Heart moved from London to Paris in late-2013, where they met The Heartcaves, a French rhythm section pairing of Pierre Juarez and Stephane Chandelier, and British keyboardist Johnny Manning. Before relocating to France, Nat’s bands have featured a glamorous array of British talent, including Dan Smith of Bastille, Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons, Sam Doyle of The Maccabees, Natalia Tena of Molotov Jukebox, Freddie Cowen of The Vaccines, and Luke Pritchard of the Kooks. While other notable collaborators have included Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey and Clash guitarist Mick Jones, and Nat even performed and sang with The Animals on their most recent UK tour.

Crossing the French-English divide for his new record, the aptly titled ‘Back To The Island’ is a nostalgic mix of sublime vocal harmonies, cascading keyboard lines, infectious guitar hooks and wonderfully imaginative rhythms. Drawing on the best of British and French musical heritage, the album manages to be both raw and gritty, yet sweet and slick in its delivery. Following two years of heavy touring across the continent, the band have built themselves a sizeable reputation as a live act, and following their huge show with The Kooks at The Forum in London in December, 2016 will also see the 5-piece back on the road for shows with La Femme and Molotov Jukebox, as well as their own headline tour.

Apart from his musical offerings, Nat has also published a novel – Now Here This – accompanied by a collection of poems and song lyrics. A series of short films written by Nat, entitled One Two, are also shortly set for release, featuring, amongst others, Games of Thrones actress Natalia Tena, La Femme singer Marlon Magnee and The Kooks’s Luke Pritchard. While the recent British gangster film -The Rise of the Krays – released in cinemas this October also features two original songs by Nat. Nat Jenkins & The Heartcaves new album ‘Back to the Island’ was released in the UK on April 1st 2016 through Mirador. The album was recorded in Paris at Tango Zulu studios and is co-produced by Swann and Henry Blanc Francard and mixed by Swann.

Plants and Animals

Today Plants and Animals premiere a live video for their single “Stay” via Exclaim! Magazine. “The new take gives the already stripped-back opening of the song some extra intimacy and rawness before exploding into an energetic, heart-pounding latter half.” (Exclaim!)

The video was captured at Mixart studios and was directed by Joe Yarmush from the Montreal based-band Suuns. “Playing this song is like a bull ride or getting a new puppy and trying to play it cool while it drags you around like a moth on a hot lightbulb, knocking over people’s drinks and children,” Matthew Woodley told Exclaim! “You’ve got el mariachi guitar guy hyper strumming, the drummer on the other side of the time-space continuum playing a dub reggae beat, and the other guitar playing the part of Hephaestus, son of Zeus and Hera, making laser hammers in his volcano shop. The singer becomes unbound—re-enacting the emotional journey of the bull before, during and after the rodeo. The backup singer is the graceful ego to his raging id. The bass is the true bond. It’s an aircraft carrier. An oil rig pumping unrefined love from the core of the Earth and shooting it into the sky in an infinite explosion of blood reds, supernova yellows and neon night blues. That’s more or less how it feels from the drum throne.

Bold, cinematic and infectious, Liverpool’s VYNCE come flying out of the stalls with irresistible vocal hooks and unforgettable guitar riffs in their debut ‘Lust’ EP after the title track dropped on Soundcloud to over 30K organic listens.

Honing their songwriting and performance over the past two years in a live setting supporting the likes of Prides, Fickle Friends, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blossoms and JAWS, the EP title track is as the title suggests; a passionate, lustful trip through tropical and psychedelic indie that leaves a sweet yet hard-hitting taste for more.

‘Fall For You’ follows with big, sentimental riffs which instantly conjure romantic, indie film soundtracks. Third track ‘Taste’ is a slightly mathy, bouncy, shimmering, electro-tinged rave, conjuring classic Manchester indie bands. Together, the EP is an exciting, tempting taste of a band set to smash their way forward in 2016.

The band consists of Peter Pegasiou (lead vox, guitar), Jack Kelsey (vox, guitar), Conor O’Shea (vox, bass) and Tom Davis (drums), aged between 20 and 22. Peter, the main songwriter of the group, didn’t fall naturally into music. In the early stages of secondary school, he would use music as an escape from the pressures of conformation commonly found in such environments. His skin head made him an unlikely candidate to excel in any kind of art, let alone start singing in a band. Still without musical belief, Peter moved on to John Moores University to study a law degree; as did Tom Davis with Pharmacy. It wasn’t long before the two boys realised they were more interested in music than their predictably bland degree subjects.

The band have featured heavily on local BBC Introducing radio shows such as Lancashire and Merseyside, including live sessions on BBC Radio Stoke and BBC Radio Lancashire. Most recently however, Dan O’Connell discovered the band’s only available song, ‘Lust’ which he was quick to feature as ‘the shock of the new’ on his Radio X show.

The band are pleased to give the track away as a free download ahead of their epic debut EP release. ‘Lust’ for it now!

Jonathan Jackson and Enation

Jonathan Jackson + Enation have returned to the studio with Grammy nominated producer Greg Archilla (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul) to record Blame-shifter, their new EP they’ll self –release on their own label, Hilasterion Records (distributed through Sony RED) on May 13, 2016. Jonathan, on break from filming his hit TV show, recorded five new songs for the band’s EP plus a cover of “Unchained Melody” recorded live at The Grand Ole Opry. The new songs will also be a part of their next full length album which will be announced later this year.

The past two years have been a whirlwind for the band. They partnered with Loud & Proud Records to release Radio Cinematic, which Billboard Magazine called “…contemporary, anthemic rock — Jackson proudly wears the influence of U2, Peter Gabriel and Coldplay on his sleeve as influences — is certainly something different…” and Rolling Stone said is “Filled with electric guitars, chest-beating vocals and swirling synths…”

For this release, the band decided to be fully independent again so they can be more interactive with their fans. They created a PledgeMusic pre-order campaign to allow their fans to be a part of the making of Blame-shifter. Their fans will be the first to get the new EP as well as have access to exclusive experiences and items, which will only be available until April 5, including a variety of autographed merchandise options, a making of Blame-shifter documentary film, VIP meet & greet opportunities and even an executive producer credit on the album among other great selections that are still available.

“We’re so excited about our brand new music and the opportunity to hit the road and share it with our fans,” says the band. “We made a record that has its roots in the kind of alt rock and live energy we grew up with. Partnering with our fans through Pledgemusic has been invigorating and we can’t wait to play the new music on tour this summer!”

Following up from the success of his debut single Remedy being championed by the likes of Noisey, being selected for the Spotify Spotlight Program in 2016 as well as multiple spins from Zane Lowe on Beats 1, Scandi singer Mavrick is back with a brand new number Funeral.

This time around, however, he wants the production to directly reflect the lyrics and all the conflicting emotions following them. Whilst playing around with the “in your face” raging bass-line which resembles Walk The Moon’s Different Colours, the rest of the song is surprisingly difficult to pin down or compare to anything else out there.
Funeral expands in its influences towards the daring combo of M83’s knack for maximalist explosive electro-grandeur, Hozier’s gospel-like ambiance, Austra’s strong giallo vibe, and topped with the contemporary air of XOV.

Signed to Universal Music, Mavrick is currently working on his debut album which is bound to have a buffet of sonically unique tracks. He says: “I know Funeral is quite far from Remedy, but get used to it because I never want one song to sound like the other.”
