Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

As 2016 continues to rip our beloved musical heroes away from us, another legend has left us as Prince passed away yesterday at the age of 57. Here’s what the Recording Academy had to say:

Gallery Circus

Gallery Circus announce UK live dates and release new track ‘Holland On Fire’ through Killing Moon Records

Gallery Circus have announced a series of new live dates, including at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Liverpool Sound City, in the wake of their excellent new single ‘Holland On Fire’, just released through Killing Moon Records.

Made up of identical twin brothers Daniel and Graeme Ross, ‘Holland On Fire’ is the first track to be taken from the duo’s highly anticipated ‘Chi-Town Dogs’ EP, out later this year. Produced by Dan Austin (Pixies, Doves, Mallory Knox), the record captures the brother’s raw and abrasive energy, showcased during their relentless touring across the UK / Europe. Over the past year the twins have quickly built up a reputation as being one of the UK’s most formidable new live bands and jumped on tours supporting acts such as Hanni El Khatib, King Charles, Little Comets, Kill it Kid and Arcane Roots. The band are now set to return with a series of UK dates this spring, kicking off at Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival this May.

Adapting their name from the infamous ‘Gallery Cabaret’ in Logan Square, Chicago, Gallery Circus began in this open mic party spot after the brothers decided to move to the USA and befriend the DIY punk scene. Here they played shows across makeshift venues in the city including punk gang clubhouses, skate parks and rooftop parties.

Graeme says “Holland On Fire tells the story of a July 4th celebration a couple of years back in Chicago when Dan and I got swept up in an accidental dynamite related incident that ended up shutting down most of the neighbourhood!”

After a year or so of slumming and gigging around America’s west coast, they swam back across the pond to release their debut single Supercell, which was featured as BBC Radio One’s ‘BBC Introducing Track of the Week’. Dan and Graeme also played a number of key festivals including Glastonbury (where their Sunday performance on the BBC Introducing stage was voted as one of the top 25 performances of the weekend by the BBC), Boardmasters, Kendal Calling and Y-Not. Gallery Circus capture the mood of this generation and put it on stage.

Dan says “We’re a live band at heart and have most fun rocking out on a stage. We get a massive thrill from trying to arrange a song so that it sounds like we’re playing with a full band without hiding behind multiple guitars, samples or backing tracks. I feel our new EP ‘Chi-Town Dogs’ captures our live intensity.”

‘Holland On Fire’ is out now via Killing Moon Records and the band will hit the road this May (live dates just below). For an interactive experience, information on tornado safety and an insight into the brothers’ schemes for next year, check out

Left Ahead Band

Left Ahead Bags

Left Ahead are a three piece punk/rock band from the murky depths of a northern post-industrial town. Fuelled by anger at politics and society they started making a racket about it. Ash, Rudy and Jack were in the same class at nursery and now they share a stage together.

Speaking on the new EP and the band’s general inspirations, vocalist Ash comments:

“I read an article by Dorian Lynskey on the New Statesman’s website in conversation with The Manic Street Preachers that made me and Jack furious. The article states that: “The circumstances that created the Manics no longer exist. Nor, thinks Wire, does a certain kind of angry, razor-brained, working-class voice.” – I say he needs to come to Hull, there are plenty of angry, intelligent working class voices here in the music and arts scene. However, I’m glad I read the article, the initial fury turned into creative energy and it spurred on our writing. Regarding politics, Bradfield stated that: “he doesn’t know how it feels to be young and discontented.” – Well it’s like this, we’re pissed off and we’re going to make a fucking racket about it.”

Sticking together the best parts of early Manics with the aggro snarl of classic Dead Kennedys, Left Ahead embody that proper DIY ethic that defines their hometown in 2016, this is music with real passion, this music has mega power, and this music is damn awesome

Swedish Polarbears

Zgrupp x-small

Swedish Polarbears debut album The Great Northern is now released digitally from Sound Asleep Records, and on snow white vinyl may 7th. Influenced by bands like Teenage Fanclub, Band of Horses and The Byrds, these Swedes serve up a timeless sparkling guitar-driven melodic pop, rich in harmonies.

Two singles ”Winter” and ”Sun of a Gun”, from the album has been released. Both was on Sweden’s leading music magazine Sonic Magazine’s ”best songs right now”-lists and got some rave reviews: ”…the greatest Scandinavian import since Ingrid Bergman! … my candidate for song of the year …These guys are so good I want to kill myself. Seriously — I give up. Just shoot me now”. (Steve Simels, powerpop.blogspot).

In anticipation of their forthcoming album, French trio UNNO present the expanded ‘Take Off Edition’ of their ‘As We Land’ EP via Nowadays Records available now.

The group’s name, UNNO – which stands for ‘the UNexpected NOte’ – exemplifies the group’s individual approach to creating music. The eclectic 6-track release, which includes new track ‘Salt’ alongside a fresh remix of opener ‘Blue Leaf’ from fellow Nowadays signees BRNFKD, showcases the group’s distinctive style; constantly prompting the listener to expect the unexpected with dreamlike synths, droning bass and erratic percussion. With hugely varied influences, the trio display an insolent freedom in the way they create their music, with each track containing its own narrative: they forbid nothing and allow everything.

Opening with a punchy percussive combination of claps and snares, first track ‘Blue Leaf’ ebbs and flows with a unique ambiance made yet more poignant with the building intensity and layering of harmonised vocals. As UNNO explain, “this track is our most direct…it is about love relationships, life together. How you let go of what your life used to be so you make room for something else.” The jittering 8-bit inspired opening of ‘The Miles’ slowly gives way to swimming synths and poetic rap vocals, whilst ‘Walls’ features layered vocals and clicking acoustic percussion reminiscent of Wood Kid, and is about coming to terms with the breakup of a suffocating and oppressive relationship. The track is accompanied by visuals from French director Julien Capelle, who demonstrates his masterful use of colour and abstract shapes to create a stunning accompaniment to the music. The synthesized chords of ‘We Lay High’ continue the 8-bit vibe, providing an almost orchestral feel to the track, with production that is reminiscent of Kavinsky meets James Blake. New addition ‘Salt’ brings the pace back down with a sorrowful echoing vocal, volatile snare-led pattering percussion and distorted synths which build to a deafening crescendo, leading to the round-off remix of ‘Blue Leaf’ from French producer duo BRNFKD, who provide a deeper, darker and more ominous take on the track.

Since forming in 2011, UNNO – comprised of Awir Leon, J.Kid and Tismé, who are all members of the prolific Dunkirk-based JAYFLY collective – have been making a name for themselves in the French music scene. Following their first ever live performance on the French TV show Taratata, the group have since been delivering unforgettable performances bursting with an energy that is both dreamy and explosive, which led to them being named ‘The Discovery of Printemps de Bourges’.

Now, ahead of their forthcoming album release, UNNO’s ‘As We Land (Take Off Edition)’ EP will provide another chance to sample the sonic delights of their breathtaking sound – one that is both raw and sensitive; energetic and melancholic.

The Y-Axes

The Y Axes - Baeble

“Recorded in Oakland at Hellam Sound, the song pulls together grungy alt-rock guitar tones (think My Bloody Valentine) and polished synth pop (The xx) into a solid production that nods to The Cocteau Twins.” – SF Critic

“The Y Axes are the poster space-babes, with a cosmic sound that is dancey and fun.” – The Bay Bridged

(New York, NY) After five years of lineup changes and other challenges, San Francisco, CA-based indie-pop-rock group The Y Axes have begun to fulfill on their tremendous promise with their first set of professionally produced songs. January saw the release of the groovy alt-rock banger “Meteorite” with the more delicate “Hold Dawn” immediately following. The Y Axes now share their latest single, “Patch Me Up,” which premiered exclusively with Baeble Music.

The Y Axes were formed in 2010 by Alexi Rose Belchere (vocals) and Devin Nelson (guitar/vocals/synths) as a side project to the other bands they were in at the time. After years of dropping DIY releases and adding and dropping members, the band finally arrived at its current iteration with Jack Sundquist (bass) and Nick Schneider (drums) rounding out the newly minted quartet.

“Patch Me Up” offers a new glimpse into the sonic world of The Y Axes’ forthcoming LP, Umbra.

“An Umbra is the point of total obscuration in a shadow or eclipse, which while dark, can only be produced by a bright light, shares Nelson. “Our music has always had elements of light and dark, balancing between being fun and upbeat while being simultaneously solemn and melancholic.”

Be sure to stream “Patch Me Up” and look for more from The Y Axes soon.
