Canadian Music Week

In less than a month Canadian Music Week (CMW) will once again take over the city of Toronto from May 2-8. Widely recognized as one of the premiere entertainment events in North America focusing on the business of music, the festival spans 7 nights of performances, with hundreds of showcasing bands at more than 40 live music venues in downtown Toronto. To sort through the flurry of music news over the last few months, we have tried to keep it short and sweet below. Looking forward to seeing you out and about!

Even though we are less than a month out, we can’t stop adding bands! The Sheepdogs, Hannah Georgas, Jeff The Brotherhood, HUMANS, Amir Obe, Max Frost, Diarrhea Planet and more have all joined the 2016 line up.

Field Studies

2015 was a successful year for the art-rock outfit Field Studies. Support from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and John Kennedy of Radio X saw the band make numerous national festival appearances, including a slot on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury Festival, and an acclaimed appearance at Y Not Festival (described by BBC Introducing’s Emma Clifford as “spellbinding and incredible to experience”). This May the young 4-piece return with ‘Rainmaking’, a dark, enveloping new EP that sees them hone their atmospheric craft. The long-awaited follow up to their mesmerising debut ‘Celestial’ sees Field Studies explore more raw, bleak textures – the band self-recorded the EP over a long winter, almost exclusively at night, capturing the eerie environment of their frozen suburban recording space across 4 haunting tracks.

Inspired by the organic, layered approaches to recording employed on seminal records like Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden and Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Field Studies hugely diversify their sound on ‘Rainmaking’, and the ominously haunting ‘Listener’ will be the first track to be released, out this April in anticipation of the new EP.

Mixed and mastered by Pete Fletcher, ‘Listener’ will be available on April 22nd exclusively from the band’s own bandcamp page. Field Studies new EP ‘Rainmaking’ will be released this May via Denizen Recordings.

Apr 07 – NOTTINGHAM – Bodega (Supporting Kiran Leonard)
Apr 08 – MANCHESTER – Night n Day
Apr 14 – CAMBRIDGE – Portland Arms
Apr 23 – IPSWICH – John Peel Centre
Apr 30 – LONDON – Heath Street Baptist Church

Vaudeville Etiquette

After the PASTE premiere of “Crosseyed Crazy,” The Bluegrass Situation’s debut of “Damn Lovely,” and The Alternate Root naming new track “Empty Hands” No. 1 on their list of “The Top Ten Songs of the Week,” Vaudeville Etiquette are releasing another new track from their upcoming album, Aura Vista Motel.

Aura Vista Motel will be released on May 6th and is available for pre-order on iTunes.

When we last saw Vaudeville Etiquette, the Seattle band was touring in support of critically acclaimed debut album Debutantes & Dealers, an album that No Depression said was “in the same vein as Mumford & Sons and the Lumineers. Their seamless harmonies and sense of spontaneity makes them a good candidate for mainstream success.” The Seattle Times called the band “one of the bright new faces of Seattle music,” American Songwriter gave the album 3 stars and compared lead vocalist Tayler Lynn to Neko Case,” USA Today praised their ability to “mix folk, jazz and country with freewheeling abandon.”

The new album gets its name from the motel that once occupied an infamous stretch of Highway 99 in Seattle. In its heyday, here was a motorist’s utopia, filled with a thriving middle class that was ready to explore America, traversed by the likes of Kerouac and Salinger, and full of romantic intrigue and possibility. Today, it’s a forgotten relic, a notoriously seedy stretch of road that attracts violence, drugs, prostitution, and one 5-piece folk-rock band that relentlessly believes in its spirit and potential.

Tengger Cavalry

Nature Ganganbaigal and TENGGER CAVALRY have been turning heads in the music world since the band’s inception in 2010. In 2014, Ganganbaigal released his Mongolian New Age album To Where Tengger Leads Me. The album won a bronze medal from Global Music Awards and a nomination from Hollywood Music in Media Awards. In 2015, Nature moved to New York City from China and re-located the band with brand new American members. Last year, the band released a new album, Blood Sacrifice Shaman, out via Metal Hell Records and available for streaming.

TENGGER CAVALRY blends the nomadic music tradition of Central Asia with heavy metal music, creating the unique music genre mentioned above, Mongolian folk metal. Nature Ganganbaigal performs multiple Mongolian nomadic instruments including Mongolian horse-head fiddle Morin Khuur, Mongolian flute, Tibetan horn, Mongolian guitar (Tovshuur) and other instruments native to the region. He is also able to sing using the ancient Mongolian singing tradition of Khoomei, also known as throat singing or overtone singing. After the release of four studio albums in Europe and United States, TENGGER CAVALRY has become known as one of the most unique, innovative and exciting metal bands in Asia.

Throw The Fight

Throw the Fight are back. The band will release its new album ‘Transmissions’ via Bullet Tooth on April 8. The band worked with producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, whose credits include August Burns Red, Texas In July, Everclear, Affiance, Live, and more.

Guitarist Ryan Baustert commented, “No.Style Productions did a killer job with the video. ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ is the first track on the record and they did a great job visually representing the first impression people will have. We kept the concept simple and didn’t really want to overthink it too much. Just the band and our friends having a good time.”

‘Transmissions’ is the follow-up to ‘What Doesn’t Kill Us’, which was produced by John Feldmann (Atreyu, The Used). That album has impressively sold 10,000 copies worldwide since release and landed on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Throw the Fight followed the album with the 2013-released The Vault EP, which also landed on Billboard’s Heatseekers and Alternative New Artist charts.

“We wanted to return when we had that fire going again. We demoed over 25 songs for this record in four months,” said guitarist Ryan Baustert. “It ended up being the largest body of material we’ve ever had to work with for an album. This is by far the heaviest, most exciting group of Throw The Fight songs we’ve done. This is it. This is the best of the best.” Since arriving on the scene, Throw the Fight, who are based in Minneapolis, have toured nationally, logging dates with Bullet For My Valentine, Black Veil Brides, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Sevendust, and more. They also secured slots on festivals such as The Vans Warped Tour & Taste of Chaos.

Throw the Fight look to spend much of 2016 on the road and are kicking off the Transmissions album cycle with a handful of headlining shows and a run of dates with multi-platinum rock band Trapt.

Kandace Springs

Every so often a new singer emerges who’s able to assimilate multiple musical touchstones and still come off sounding remarkably fresh and unburdened by the past. Kandace Springs is one of those artists. The 27-year-old, Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes, but as evidenced by her sparkling full-length Blue Note Records debut, Soul Eyes, mimics none of them.

Instead Springs allows her comely alto to become a conduit that touches upon soul, jazz and pop while transforming those aforementioned influences into a personalized sound that reveals itself effortlessly. “The artists who have inspired me the most all sang so naturally,” Springs says. “That helped me find my own sound.”

Springs’ journey to discovering her uniqueness didn’t happen overnight. In fact, her 2014 self-titled debut EP had a decidedly contemporary R&B/hip-hop bent with production by Pop & Oak (Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Miguel). The EP was incredibly well-received and led to US TV performances on Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as appearances at the Afropunk and Bonnaroo festivals.

As amazing an experience as that was, as Springs got ready to record her album she couldn’t shake the feeling that she wasn’t yet singing her true self. Conversations with her longtime producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers led to soul searching and rethinking her musical direction. Eventually Springs returned to a more spacious, organic sound that channels her earlier jazz influences as well as her Nashville upbringing.

Also during this period, Springs attracted the attention of Prince, who heard her makeover of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and invited her to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain. “He encouraged me a lot before I recorded this new record, especially during the time in which I was trying to figure out my sound,” Springs says. “He told me that I needed to do what comes naturally to me. He was absolutely right.”

Now as Springs continues to develop as singer and songwriter in her own right, she’ll surely win over many other hearts. “I would like to be known as one of the younger people that are keeping jazz and soul alive and vibrant, “she says. “I love the realness of jazz and soul.”

Gypsy and The Cat

Not content with ever sitting still, Melbourne electro-pop duo Gypsy & the Cat have dropped ‘I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else’, the scintillating first official single from their upcoming highly-anticipated LP ‘Virtual Islands’ due July.

‘I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else’, which premiered on Noisey, is brightly furnished with summery, undulant synths, featuring Gypsy & the Cat’s iconic lighthearted harmonies and a driving, anthemic chorus. There’s just the right amount of weirdness and whimsy – all kept firmly rooted in cathartic pop melodies.

The track, mixed by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, Neon Indian) follows on from previous single ‘Inside Your Mind’s red hot reception. In the wake of its premiere on Indie Shuffle, ‘Inside Your Mind’ charted at number two on Hype Machine and received airplay on US radio giant KCRW. Impressive? Yes. Strange? No. Gypsy & the Cat are very much committed to treading the path of success, with three songs in the triple j Hottest 100, European headline tours, ARIA & Hype Machine singles, and international charting all under their belts.

And there’s no time wasted – the duo have just wrapped up a five-date national tour and are gearing up to release ‘Virtual Islands’, their first long-player in four years. With two glimmering synth-pop gems from this release already bouncing around (and making listeners do the same) it’s clear it’ll be well worth the wait.

On the day that ‘Heartache’ has been released. Kidsmoke have today unveiled the video for their current single.

Speaking about the video, lead singer Lance explains: “The band travelled to a run down Mill in Manchester to shoot a video for the song, with a film student friend of theirs in tow. There were many influences in regards to the videos direction, but the band sighted Joy Divison’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ video as the main influence, consciously emulating similar shots.”

While their last single ‘Cut Yourself Loose’ has racked up over 25,000 plays (and counting) across Soundcloud, Spotify and other sources, Welsh Indie-Pop outfit, Kidsmoke have released their second single of 2016, ‘Heartache’. Recorded by Ben Trow and mixed by Darren Lawson (My Bloody Valentine, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart).

Ethereal vocals and delicate guitars float over a hypnotic bass and drum template on new single ‘Heartache’. Combining heavy rhythms and compulsive hooks in equal measure makes for yet another enduring Kidsmoke release.

‘Heartache’ will be looking to take the interest that the band garnered with ‘Cut Yourself Loose’ and build upon it. The track appeared on a number of reputable blogs and was also included in the first edition of Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Six Strings playlist, where it was streamed over 10,000 times.

‘Heartache’ will be available physically as part of a limited edition run from April 8th. As well as including ‘Cut Yourself Loose’ as a b-side, the release will also include some hand-written lyrics. The CD is available to order from here and will also be available at the band’s upcoming shows.

A theme of night and day emerged from his depiction of them, the perfection summation of the different feels and influences the tracks gave him.

Lillie Lemon

Monterey, CA-based synth-pop duo, Lillie Lemon, recently kicked off their expansive US tour for their latest EP, Aether. Bringing their music to the masses, the nine-month stretch of shows was plotted completely by the band.

The band started as the solo recording project of Lille Lemon (songwriting/vocals) on the shores of Lake Michigan. While pursuing a degree in Creative Writing, Lemon relocated to the sunny bay of Monterey, CA. It was there, in 2011, that Lemon crossed paths with Erica Wobbles (keys/rhythm/production), a classically trained instrumentalist with a self-taught understanding of synthesizers and electronic music. After seeing each other at several open mic nights, Lemon and Wobbles decided to collaborate and found they creatively complimented one another. Together, the two combine acoustic instrumentation with electro-pop production, crafting soundscapes in line with contemporary acts such as CHVRCHES and Passion Pit.

Lillie Lemon calls the duo’s music “self-deprecating synth-pop with a dark sense of humor and upbeat sounding dance tunes.” The group’s lyrical content centers around the current state of human existence and a raw examination of the flaws of oneself.

Lillie Lemon is currently on their third major tour with plans for 150 performances over 9 months.

Walls of Jericho

WALLS OF JERICHO fans worldwide count on the unmatched aggression and integrity of Detroit`s daughter and sons – be it at their brutal live shows or on record! Eight years after The American Dream, Candace Kucsulain and Co. have found new allies in Napalm Records and seem more relentless than ever: there`s no space for soft nuances! Maddening riffing, downbeats, and huge breakdowns proudly display the band`s historical vigor.Recently the band completed work on a video for the song “Reign Supreme” which is being unleashed!

No One Can Save You From Yourself, is available now via Napalm Records. Order the album in physical formats HERE and digitally HERE.

Seemingly overnight, stylized bands playing strains of melodic hardcore have sailed up the pop charts. But for WALLS OF JERICHO things have played out a bit differently. During the scene’s ascension, the band’s members have all but shunned the idea of a genre tag or an “image” and have instead focused their energies on making music that will survive strictly on its musical merits.

The Struts

The live performance video of “Put Your Money On Me” from U.K. rockers The Struts, recently premiered via Billboard who says “ the quartet…does not skimp on the sonic bombast.” The song is taken from the band’s debut album Everybody Wants, out now.

Everybody Wants continues to receive widespread critical acclaim—Rolling Stone recently featured the band as an “Artist to Watch” hailing, “The Struts are a proudly retro crew with a frontman who won’t be denied arena-size glory,” while Interview Magazine praises the music as “some of the truest glam-rock known to the 21st century.”

Furthermore, The Struts will continue to tour in support of the album throughout the summer, including festivals such as Shaky Knees, Hangout, Bottlerock and Lollapalooza
