Fates Warning

U.S. Progressive Metal pioneers FATES WARNING have finally returned with their first studio album release in about a decade! Entitled “Darkness In A Different Light”, the album will be released on September 30th, 2013 in Europe and October 1st, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

“Darkness In A Different Light” is FATES WARNING’s first album of new material since the release of “FWX” in 2004 and also marks the first release for the band’s stellar current line-up of Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti (guitars), Joey Vera (bass) and Bobby Jarzombek (drums).

The album was produced by Matheos and mixed by long time FATES WARNING engineer Phil Magnotti, while mastering was handled by Maor Appelbaum at Maor Appelbaum Mastering, California. The (above pictured) artwork for the album was designed by Conte di San Pietro.

FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder checked in with a comment as follows:

Darkness in a Different Light” is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band. I believe that this line-up is the best that Fates has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album. It’s been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished here. We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years. We plan on touring as much as possible for “Darkness in a Different Light” and hopefully we’ll hit a few places we’ve never been…

Indeed, FATES WARNING already have headlining touring runs confirmed for October in Europe and November/December in North America, with further live activity to follow in 2014.

L.D. has toured with and has been a contributing member of The Cinematic Orchestra for nearly 6 years and has also worked with Bonobo, Fink, Lou Rhodes of Lamb, members of Wilco, Lizz Wright, Tortoise and many others. Grey Reverend’s new album A Hero’s Lie will be released September 2nd, 2013 and he will tour with Bonobo this fall.

Seattle rappers Onry Ozzborn and JFK, together known as Grayskul, are soon releasing their new album Zenith, their first album with Fake Four Inc. The 18-track release features Aesop Rock, Raekwon, Solilla, Reva DeVito, and labelmate Terra Lopez of Sister Crayon. Production on the album is handled by Aesop, Smoke, Void Pedal, and Moodie Black, and the entire album was recorded with sound engineer Zebulon Dak. Accompanying the album release is the new single, also named “Zenith.”

Both originally part of the Pacific Northwest rap collective Oldominion, Onry and JFK stemmed from the larger group as Grayskul a decade ago. After touring with Eyedea & Abilities in 2004, Grayskul caught the attention of underground label Rhymesayers Entertainment. Their label debut Deadlivers gained praise from outlets such as SPIN, and now their upcoming album is building anticipation with the release of “Zenith.”

Official Website

The duo release the title track from their upcoming album Zenith today on Complex. Though the version premiered on Complex does not feature Wu Tang Clan member Raekwon, he will appear on the album version of the track. Oldominion’s Smoke M2D6 originally produced the track for JFK’s solo project, but when the rapper showed it to his Grayskul partner after a few listens, it was decided it would be perfect for their new album. Onry says the challenge in making this song was “just knowing already by hearing the beat that it would be the title track of the album…we had to make an epic hit of sorts and push to hit our own Zenith thus far to make it the best song it possibly could be.”

JFK tells us the inspiration behind the song was “my recovery. During the process of writing the entire record I was not drinking and had been sober for 6 months.” He also lists his sobriety as one of the main challenges in making this album, saying he was “focused and sober and had the opportunity to write with such conviction and clarity which I enjoyed…we all know how challenging it is to fight our vices.”

JF Robitaille

JF Robitaille is a born storyteller. But ask any of the canonized—Dylan, Kerouac, Scorcese—and they’ll tell you the same thing: storytelling and human experience are inseparable. And that, perhaps, is why Rival Hearts’ narratives feel so vividly authentic—his folk songs are painted with uncut globs of humanity.

Robitaille explored folkier territories with his acclaimed 2011 album, Calendar. It was intimate yet accessible, poetic sans pretension, and brainy without feeling academic—and it established Robitaille as one of Canada’s best songwriters. No, we’re not exaggerating: Critics have whispered his name alongside genre giants, from Bob Dylan, to Lou Reed, to fellow Montrealer Leonard Cohen.

Official Website

But in the years since Calendar’s release—spent largely on the road, performing high-profile gigs at CMJ, NXNE, Pop Montreal and the Halifax Pop Explosion, amongst others—Robitaille has blossomed from one of the nation’s top emerging talents to one of its best songwriters. Period.

Rival Hearts is JF’s ambitious debut on Sparks Music. Recorded at Prescott, Ontario’s House of Miracles, a legendary studio that birthed seminal releases from the Hidden Cameras and Royal City, Rival Hearts has Robitaille finding a singular voice—one built around wide-screen optimism, seamless songwriting, and neon-lit nuance. Produced by Andy Magoffin (The Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers), Robitaille recruited drummer Marshall Bureau (Jim Guthrie), bassist Tavo Diez de Bonilla (Jenn Grant) and multi-instrumentalist J.J. Ipsen (Octoberman) to sculpt the sonic settings for Rival Hearts—sombre pianos, haunting organs, and plaintive trumpets paint the pitch-perfect backdrop, whether he’s ambling through the fruit stands on Montreal’s Parc Avenue or recalling the rusted façades of Coney Island.

Yet when Rival Hearts is given the chance to simmer, Robitaille’s true charm emerges: Without leaning on well-worn folk clichés, he’s a master at capturing raw—and very real—emotion. Robitaille’s sanguine yearning feels almost like Leonard Cohen covering Lou Reed’s Transformer, or Robyn Hitchcock fronting Modern Lovers. It’s timeless. Personal. Universal. Because Rival Hearts is about, well, rival hearts—the heartbreak that occurs when roots are pulled in different directions. And that experience is, if nothing else, universal.

Canadian Tour Dates:
August 26th | Montreal, QC | O Patros Vys
August 27th | Toronto, ON | The Rivoli

Rival Hearts will be released on August 27 through Sparks Music and Universal Music Canada.

Travis, one of the UK’s best known bands, return after a five year hiatus with an impressive new album entitled Where You Stand. Watch the video for the title track here:

Travis are currently touring Europe and Russia, which includes an upcoming performance at the V Festival (UK), before a US tour kicks off on September 19th. Tour dates below. Sounding more invigorated than ever, the multi-million-selling Scottish quartet have delivered a stunning new album full of the cinematic pop and instantly anthemic songs that first caught the attention of critics and music fans on their breakthrough album “The Man Who.” Q Magazine applauds the album for “displaying real depth and maturity”, whilst Mojo goes on to say “Fran Healy’s voice is still a trusty conduit of wistfulness and euphoria,” adding the record is “beautifully produced.”

Check out the official video for the first US single “Moving” here:

Travis’s impressive career includes two number one albums, three Brit awards, five Top 10 singles, 12 Top 20 singles, and countless sold-out shows around the world. Pre-order Where You Stand on iTunes and the band’s website for special editions:
