Robert Glasper Experiment

ArtScience finds the Grammy-winning Robert Glasper Experiment getting down to its essence, with each of the band members—keyboardist Robert Glasper, saxophonist and vocalist Casey Benjamin, bassist Derrick Hodge, and drummer Mark Colenburg—delivering the vocals and sharing in the production and songwriting on the album. On ArtScience, the Experiment sounds like a bit of everything that’s vibrant and challenging and great about music woven into a billowing fabric of jazz, funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, blues, disco, electronic, and pop.

After delivering two star-studded, chart-topping, R&B Grammy-winning volumes of their acclaimed Black Radio series, on which they collaborated with everyone from Erykah Badu to Norah Jones to Snoop Dogg, the band pondered where to go next. The answer? “You do you,” says Glasper with a chuckle. “People need to hear what the Experiment sounds like, just us—know what our vibe is and can be.”

“Find You” is a jaw-dropping tour-de-force co-written by all four Experiment members that charges through various moods and genres. The track features Hodge on lead vocals as well as a shredding guitar solo by Michael Severson. It closes with an impassioned plea for justice from Glasper’s son Riley. “He’s speaking his mind,” explains Glasper. “He was 5 and the Michael Brown case came on the news and he started going off.” Indeed, Riley speaks to the anger many feel: “It’s not fair! We should let other people live! … Let’s try to make the polices better … like real polices that help. No gun shooting!”

Glasper himself has been keeping incredibly busy as of late. Last year he reconvened his acclaimed acoustic trio for the Grammy-nominated album Covered, which was recorded live at Capitol Studios with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid. Glasper has also scored Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead film, reinterpreted the Miles Davis catalog on Everything Is Beautiful, played keys all over albums from Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly to Anderson .Paak’s Malibu to Maxwell’s blackSUMMERS’night, and is currently collaborating on forthcoming albums from Herbie Hancock, Common, and Mac Miller.

What So Not

Wrapping up his colossal double headline tour in Australia with Fool’s Gold head honcho A-Trak and game changing set at Splendour In The Grass, Australian producer What So Not has shared the title track, accompanying video and details of his highly anticipated, Divide & Conquer EP. Out on September 9th via OWSLA / Sweat It Out Music, the EP marks the first for the newly solo What So Not and includes features from the likes of Kimbra and BURNS, joining JOY., Ganz and long-time collaborator George Maple.

The title track, “Divide & Conquer” was born in Barcelona after a night out in London. Entranced by the “simple dark melodies & modulating basslines” of a Shades & Gaslamp Killer show, Emoh envisioned: “two once peaceful cities side by side, trying to outbuild each other… It began with the siren, rising in pitch, the bassline creeping in note by note – a hypnotic low end crescendo.”

Back in LA Emoh conceptualized the story of the two cities pulling images from the internet and expanding on the narrative in sequence with the song. The aesthetic was surreal imagery played out in a video game format – an observation on human nature & the paradox of nature & industry. Pretty soon, Emoh had a 15-page document and his first video treatment. He enlisted Babekuhl & Leticia Dare to collaborate on its actualization and “Divide & Conquer” came to life.

The Divide & Conquer EP pre-order includes instant-grats of the title track and the EPs first two singles, “Lone,” a collaboration with Dutch producer Ganz, featuring rising star JOY., which has clocked almost 5 million streams. His follow up collaboration with George Maple and Rome Fortune on “Buried” was released in July with its own surreal video. With an impressive track record of festivals up his sleeve including Coachella, Splendour In The Grass, EDC Vegas and Electric Forest, What So Not wraps up a huge year with his largest headline tour ever this fall when The Divide & Conquer Tour hits venues across North America.

D.D Dumbo

D.D Dumbo’s long awaited debut LP Utopia Defeated will be released on Oct 7 through us and 4AD. Pre-orders are available now HERE!

Brisbane band Feuds today release their debut EP Stay Lost, which they will launch at Brisbane’s The Bearded Lady on Thursday Aug 26.

Stay Lost was recorded largely at guitarist Perry Walker’s farm in Noosa over what was supposed to be just one week. But the band found that the freedom of working outside a studio was the perfect nurturing environment to hone their sound, and the EP ended up taking the better part of a year to complete.

The result? An impactful and honest exploration of life – and all the uncertainties it brings. Says frontman Jeremy Hunter, “None of the songs resolve in a lyrical way, they just ask questions, or pose difficult realities, and refuse to give closure on them. That’s sort of the meaning behind the EP title Stay Lost – sometimes you have no choice but to remain confused. But the title is also a suggestion, in that you can choose to live with uncertainty, you can choose to be lost, and that might be a good thing. Nobody is more dead inside than someone who thinks they know everything; they’ve stopped growing.”

Feuds is the reinvigoration of a project that’s existed for some time now. Having previously performed alongside Holy Holy, Bad//Dreems, The Belligerents and Harts, the band now have the perfect setup to start afresh and launch their new vision. The release of Stay Lost threatens a formidable force in Feuds, and it’s only the beginning.

Mid-90s rock-electronica seems to have remained in the deepest valley of cultural relevance to finding new ways of making music, intertwining loops, riffs, repetitions and all that electronic rock is known for today. The multi- Grammy award winning Teddybears have decided to reopen the genre’s door in the shape of their upcoming new single The Best You Ever Had.

Having worked with a number of pop superstars such as Max Martin, Cee-Lo Green, Sia, Iggy Pop, Petite Meller and Ellie Goulding, Teddybears have now teamed up with the ex- Boyz N Da Hood US rapper Gorilla Zoe to create a genuine retro tribute (but with a contemporary hip hop twist) to the mid-90s rock-tronica and all its forefathers.

The Best You Ever Had is a sonically accurate combination between Chemical Brothers Go, Daft Punk Robot Rock and Fatboy Slim Push The Tempo showing that Teddybears have packaged yet another song into a unique piece of music. By sturdily building the foundations of their writing and producing careers, they’ve kept the freedom to do, write and produce what they want within the band, no matter how un-pop, un-obvious or unusual it may be… Jocke says: “The song started with a guitar-riff that I was goofing around with and that originally sounded like some kind of Slayer-esque metal riff. Then I played the same riff on a cheap chip-synth and it sounded really cool, so that’s how that came about.”

Jocke says about the new video: “The video is like a weird disturbing trip. Sexy psychedelic and creepy all at once. Fat and sleazy like too much whipped cream and custard. Like taking acid when you’re having dinner at your grandma’s.”The band have already turned heads with their unusual sonic selections, and have been airplayed multiple times on BBC Radio 6 Music (including Steve Lamacq and Iggy Pop) as well as supported by Consequence Of Sound, The Line Of Best Fit, SPIN, Noisey and Indie Shuffle to name a few. Pitchfork even say their sound “is like an aural Jackson Pollock painting” which clearly illustrates the musically unpredictable attitude of the Teddybears.

The Best You Ever Had is taken from the band’s upcoming new LP Rock On, and both will be available in the States and Canada 26th August 2016.

The Album Leaf

Electronic / rock pioneers THE ALBUM LEAF have just premiered a full stream of their forthcoming studio effort Between Waves ahead of its release via Relapse next Friday, August 26. Between Waves, the project’s sixth full-length album, has premiered via NPR, who commented,

“The Album Leaf has slowly grown into a rapturously meditative act, capable of zero-gravity drift and sky-scraping melody… Like the tide, the record swells from one state to the next, building and dissipating in sequences of soft pulses and washes of blissful oblivion. The mood may shift — sometimes shadowy and pensive, sometimes luminous and euphoric — but Between Waves gently maintains its persistent, consuming lull.”

The band has also just announced a new run of European tour dates kicking off this October. Check out the itinerary below.

Oct 21 London, UK Garage
Oct 23 Brugge, BEL Cactus Club
Oct 24 Cologne, GE Luxor

Following the release of their stunning ‘Rainmaking’ EP this year, BBC Introducing favorites Field Studies have announced a UK tour for this Autumn, as well as releasing a brand new remix by Racing Glaciers of their EP track ‘Listener’.

It’s been a rapid rise for the art-rock outfit from Nottingham, with support from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and John Kennedy of Radio X seeing the band make numerous national festival appearances, including a slot on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury Festival, an acclaimed appearance at Y Not Festival (described by BBC Introducing’s Emma Clifford as “spellbinding and incredible to experience”), touring in support of Girl Band, and shows as far as Slovenia and Croatia.

Earlier this year the young 4-piece released their second EP ‘Rainmaking’, honing their atmospheric craft and exploring more raw, bleak textures. 08th October – Glasgow – Hug and Pint

Rodriguez draws influences from artists like Elliott Smith, Neil Young, Neutral Milk Hotel and Dinosaur Jr and genres including the DIY punk-rock scene of his past, pop, indie and rock. The man behind Albis is a man of many trades, fully composing, writing and producing his music. American Songwriter describers “Runners” as a song that has “steady acoustic strumming overlaid with synth and electric guitar to create a stirring background for his pensive lyrics.”

Buddy Miller

For one week each year, some of the best songwriters in country, Americana, folk and roots music set sail on a musical adventure called Cayamo. Over the last few years, award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Buddy Miller set up a recording studio on the ship and recorded and played with everyone from veteran songwriters to emerging artists. Buddy Miller & Friends’ Cayamo Sessions At Sea, was originally released last January to critical acclaim and a deluxe edition of the album is out today on New West Records. The original 11 track set features once-in-a-lifetime musical moments recorded on the 2014 and 2015 voyages with Kris Kristofferson, Lucinda Williams, Kacey Musgraves, Richard Thompson, Lee Ann Womack, Shawn Colvin, Nikki Lane, Brandi Carlile, The Lone Bellow, Doug Seegers and more. Three previously unreleased bonus tracks are now available including Buddy’s duet with Steve Earle on the Delmore Brothers’ “I Let The Freight Train Carry Me On.” Rolling Stone Country premiered the track this week which can be heard HERE. Rounding out the set is The Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” featuring Teresa Williams and Larry Campbell and Buddy’s rendition of Eddy Arnold’s “You Don’t Know Me.”

From bow to stern, port to starboard, on top deck and down below, artists – some old friends, some just acquainted – come together in fits of spontaneity and create unique musical collaborations all around the ship. It’s for this reason that Cayamo has become one of the most sought after cruises for artists and music lovers alike, selling out year after year. In 2012, Miller decided to try to capture a few of these special maritime moments and brought along some recording gear and set up a studio in the ship’s library where he and co-host and lifelong friend Jim Lauderdale recorded episodes for their SiriusXM Outlaw Country Buddy & Jim Radio Show. They ended up recording their debut episode with Lucinda Williams. Miller thought the radio show recordings sounded great so, in 2014, he brought along more gear, an engineer and some stellar musicians and set up a temporary recording studio between the lanes of a bowling alley. For two days and nights, a who’s who of artists came to record while lucky fans watched on. He had so much fun that he did it all again on the 2015 cruise.

The album kicks off with back-to-back smoldering duets as Miller trades verses with Lee Ann Womack on the Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty country classic, “After The Fire Is Gone,” followed with Kacey Musgraves on Buck Owens’ jubilant counterpoint, “Love’s Gonna Live Here.” Kris Kristofferson offers up a powerful and pensive rendition of his signature song, “Sunday Morning Coming Down” as Miller’s unmistakable baritone guitar rings throughout. Some of the many other highlights include Nikki Lane and Miller injecting some modern mojo into Jack Clement’s timeless Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner weeper, “Just Someone I Used To Know,” Lucinda Williams’ devastatingly beautiful rendition of Gram Parson’s “Hickory Wind,” British folk great Richard Thompson reimagining of Hank Williams’ “Wedding Bells” and Shawn Colvin’s gorgeous take on the Rolling Stones’ stand-by, “Wild Horses.” The original collection comes to a close with Miller joining Brandi Carlile, and folk-rockers The Lone Bellow on a spirited version of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.”

These recordings serve as both a vacation postcard from Miller and his talented friends and a musical snapshot of their journey through song.

K. Flay

Today, K.Flay releases a brand-new EP, Crush Me, via Night Street/ Interscope/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Available for digital download and streaming, this is the first release from Imagine Dragons’ front-man Dan Reynolds’ newly minted label – Night Street Records.

An alternative artist and producer with hip-hop influences, K.Flay’s Crush Me EP showcases her fearlessly honest songwriting and includes her new single “Blood In The Cut.” “The song is about the desire to inundate yourself with pain or angst or noise or joy, or really any experience, in order to have ownership of the feeling,” says K.Flay. “Though it emerged from a dark place, the song quickly morphed into a celebratory thing, which was surprising and cool for me. It kind of felt like I was enacting the song as I wrote it.”

Following international festival performances this summer, K.Flay returns to North America for a headlining tour support of Crush Me. The tour kicks off on October 24th in San Diego and will include Canadian dates in Toronto and Vancouver.

K.Flay, born Kristine Flaherty, has released four mix tapes and three EPs, followed by her 2014 debut album Life As A Dog. “Blood In The Cut” is her first single since releasing the stand alone track “FML” in March.

K.Flay’s Canadian Tour Dates:
10/29 – Vancouver, BC – The Biltmore Cabaret
11/15 – Toronto, ON – Adelaide Hall

Quake The Earth

From the icy north Quake The Earth strikes metallic hardcore with its diamond-edged grip in music. At the helm of this sledgehammer a combined union of young energy and solid experience bears a hellish fruit. The tectonic plates rumble as the force of nature from Oulu, Finland is being released.

Sometimes the alliance of two elements is more than sum of its parts. After the Nordic near-death metal wonder Perfect Chaos, Finland has not had a new iron fist in years. That was until the band Forensic Hardcore met its death at the end of 2010 when the vocalist quit the game. The group then came up with a burning idea to ask Aki Häkkinen to be their vocalist, him being the vocal force of Perfect Chaos and Grinister whom have had success outside of Finland. The other members of Quake the Earth also perform in storming bands.

Together the mew group started working on the rough songs written by guitarist Jani Kakko. The coctail of experience, talent and energy started to bear fruit and a new and fresh sound was unearthed. The band found themselves musically in the realms of Lamb Of God, Pantera and Hatebreed. Musically their role models are Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front and Rage Against The Machine, amongst others. Quake The Earth, however, does not want to create self-repeating music nor go with the mainstream or with a certain genre. Despite the strong influences, Quake The Earth has its own unique sound.

After some hard grinding, four new songs were born to be recorded. This iron fist does not do anything half-heartedly. The first EP titled “First Blood” was recorded in one of the most famous studios in Finland, Mastervox in Oulu and was released in 2011. Sentenced, Poisonblack and Embraze have all used the same studio. Quake The Earth did most of the recording themselves and the sound guru Immu Ilmarinen engineered and mastered it.

The force of nature has not stand still. The debute full lenght album “We choose to walk this path” was recorded at well proven studio Mastervox and was released in 2012 receiving amazing reviews all over the world! It was followed by touring in Finland and building even better reputation of being amazing band live aswell with it’s relentless energy on stage.

“There is no doubt that you have just borne witness to one of the most important albums in the hardcore/metal cross-genre.” – Metal as Fuck

The second album “Declaration Of War” is released September 9th 2016 by Inverse Records.

Death Design

Death Design is a brand new metal band from Pori, Finland, formed in January 2016. They describe their music as death metal with various influences from the subgenres such as groove, progressive and melodic metal.

The first steps with the band were in the summer of 2014 when Mikael Weckström and Janne Salminen decided to form a brand new band with their mutual visions. Soon after that Ville Lähteenmäki joined the band as a drummer and they started to prepare new stuff for their upcoming release.

After couple of months the project froze for a while because they were curious to try out how Mikael’s previous band would work with Janne as a new vocalist. With that particular setup they recorded one EP and also did a couple of gigs. About half years later they experienced disagreements between the band members so after a short amount of time they decided to bury the band.

It was finally time for awaking their “Death Design” project and really get on it. They released their debut single on August 4th 2016 via Inverse Records and it has already received a lot of positive feedback. Now the band is going full steam forward with the new material!”

One part vocals, one part machines – meet NAATIONS. Premiering via COMPLEX, debut track ‘Kingdom’ is a powerful statement of intent that outlines the duo’s realm – a strong nod to an island grit and verses that delve into the human condition. With a finely tuned swagger reminiscent of an M.I.A., Elliphant or Rudimental track, Dunn riffs on reality and ambition, promising to move the empire.

Nicky Night Time (Van She) & Nat Dunn’s musical chemistry was apparent from their first meeting and continued into a mutual muse relationship that is now NAATIONS. Traversing between Australia and the US, the duo have written more for others than their own projects in recent times, penning tunes both with and for some of the hottest kids on the block. Nat has worked with the likes of Tkay Maidza, Alex Winston (US) and Bearson (US) and Nicky has teamed up with Jess Kent, Nicole Millar, The Klaxons & Kita Alexander – to name a few.

Sitting on an album’s worth of material including a clutch of collaborations, and with a burning desire to show the world the state of the NAATIONS, Nicky and Nat are only just getting started. The duo are also set to release their feature on King Henry’s (Major Lazor, Beyonce) lead single ‘Don’t Stay Away’ in the last quarter of 2016. NAATIONS will be debuting their live show at Australian industry tastemaker festival BIGSOUND this September.
