Norah Jones

Norah Jones has announced the October 7 global release of Day Breaks (Blue Note Records/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company), her stunning sixth solo album which is a kindred spirit to the singer’s breakout debut Come Away With Me and finds the 9-time GRAMMY-winner returning to the piano and her roots. The album features jazz luminaries including her Blue Note label mates saxophonist Wayne Shorter, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and drummer Brian Blade on a 12-song set that presents 9 new originals alongside covers of songs by Horace Silver, Duke Ellington and Neil Young.

“This new album feels full circle because I’m going back to my early influences,” says Norah. “After the first record, I drifted away from the piano a little bit. I still played it, but was more inspired to write on guitar. I really loved playing piano on this record.”

Watch the video for Carry On, the album’s first single which features Norah’s signature piano sound. Fans who pre-order the download of Day Breaks on the Norah Jones Store, iTunes or Amazon will receive Carry On instantly, and the single is also on all streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify. Day Breaks is available for pre-order in all formats at the Norah Jones Store and Amazon. A special 180-gram orange vinyl version of the album will also be available, as well as a deluxe CD version featuring 4 live bonus tracks.

“Norah Jones has a way of being there when you need her… a warm, honeyed voice, right up against your ear, AutoTune-free and honest,” wrote the Boston Globe in a rave review of Norah’s first-ever Newport Jazz Festival performance this past Saturday in front of the festival’s first sold-out audience in over 25 years. Norah also became only the 4th artist in history to perform at both the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals in the same year.

Norah has also announced Fall tour dates in North America and Europe including a Canadian concert in Vancouver (Queen Elizabeth Theatre, October 18). Ticket pre-sales for the North American tour dates are now underway and fans who pre-order Day Breaks in any format at the Norah Jones Store before Sunday at 11:59pm ET will have access to the best seats in the house while supplies last. General tickets will go on sale Friday, August 12. Visit for ticket info.

Derrick Hodge

On August 26, Derrick Hodge will release The Second, his sophomore album for Blue Note Records via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The Second finds the two-time GRAMMY-winner taking on the roles of producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist to present a singular vision. The results are once rich, raw and revelatory, with Hodge forgoing a conventional band approach and instead playing all of the instruments and contributing vocals himself with only a few exceptions – drums from Mark Colenburg on three tracks and one track featuring horns performed by trumpeter Keyon Harrold, trombonist Corey King, and tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland.

The Second is available for pre-order now on CD or digital download. Fans who pre-order the download will immediately receive the title track which is also available as a single on streaming services. Listen to the The Second HERE.

“I wanted to create something that exposed myself artistically, with a heartbeat for the people,” says Hodge. “My hope is for this sound to uplift people, help them get through whatever, and show that I’m all in for creating music for the rest of my life and career.”

After years as an essential band member in groups led by artists including trumpeter Terence Blanchard, keyboardist Robert Glasper, rapper Common, and R&B singers Jill Scott and Maxwell, Hodge stepped out on his own in 2013 with the release of Live Today, his debut album which introduced a strikingly original voice of his own.

“Mr. Hodge has made a cinematic word of his own,” declared The New York Times in their glowing review of Live Today. JazzTimes called the album “a focused, cohesive and artistically ambitious record,” noting that it’s “identity, and lasting beauty, is found in his arrangements,” and praising how naturally Hodge’s sound wove together jazz and hip hop: “the hypnotic morphing of textures and timbres within these liquid arrangements herald new chemistry and creative fuel.”

The track listing for The Second is as follows:

The Second
Song 3
You Believed
World Go Round
Heart Of A Dreamer
Underground Rhapsody
Clock Strike Zero
For Generations
Don Blue
From Me To You

Inc. No World

LA, don’t miss Inc. No World’s show at the Troubadour. Get tix HERE!The low-key alt-soul sound of inc. (also known as inc. no world) draws from R&B inspiration, from Prince to D’Angelo to Kelela. Brothers Andrew and Daniel Aged have recently worked with fka Twigs, and Daniel has been a touring bass player with Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, and more. Most of the songs were written by Andrew on an acoustic guitar in Hawaii, and came into their understated neo-funk life with Daniel’s vision and sound. Their previous record, No World, was released to acclaim via 4AD, but for this album, the brothers will be self-releasing via their crowd-funded label, No World Recordings.

True Widow

Dallas trio TRUE WIDOW have announced their fourth album Avvolgere, due out this Sept. 23 on CD/2xLP/DLX 2xLP/Digital via Relapse Records. The forthcoming LP perfects the formula that 2013’s Circumambulation established: Avvolgere rocks and rolls with serene, rounded climaxes and steep, jangling choruses that engulf the listener with waves of downbeat, saccharine melodies and mesmerizing distortion. TRUE WIDOW’s signature alternation between male and female vocals helps further blur the boundaries between the heft of stoner rock, the droning atmosphere of shoegaze, and the twangy catchiness of blues and indie rock. It’s both concise and circuitous – the album takes you on a journey that you can’t ever quite predict or expect. Avvolgere is TRUE WIDOW sounding more infectious and consummate than ever before.

The first single from the album, “Entheogen,” is streaming HERE and is available as an instant download with digital pre-orders, which can be found at the same link. Physical pre-orders are also available at the link above.

Verge Collection

With some of the finest sounds to emerge with that Australian suburban voice since Courtney Barnett first revealed her gardening habits, Verge Collection are only halfway through what can only be described as their formative year. And there’s no slowing them down – up next on their to-do list is releasing a new single and their debut EP and playing the massive BIGSOUND Live, Cronulla’s Sounds of the Suburbs, Rottofest and a whole swag of national dates alongside Skegss, City Calm Down and The Vanns.

Charging into radio land with the undeniable ‘Our Place’ and follow-up ‘Class Of 09’, the clever Perth foursome have another single in ‘Postcodes’, a perfect precursor to debut EP Open Plan Living, out in September. Produced by Andy Lawson at Debaser Studios (The Sleepy Jackson, Tired Lion), the EP is brimming with the lads’ trademark razorsharp lyrical wit and equal parts charm to boot.

“I liked the name because it had a bit of double meaning,” reveals frontman Ben Morris. “To me it just means living a life with little to no real ‘plans’. Lyrically I think theres cohesion, the songs to me sound quite optimistic despite some of the themes that are danced around. There was quite a lot of material to choose from when we finally got round to recording the EP, so I was able to cherry pick songs that showed the musical scope of what myself and the band could do.”

Kicking off a national tour with trouble-starters Skegss, Verge Collection will play no less than 12 shows before the end of September, culminationg with the EP release on Friday, September 23.

August Wells

August Wells is a musical project formed in New York by Dublin native Ken Griffin (formerly of highly underrated cult Irish band Rollerskate Skinny, Kid Silver and Favourite Sons) and New York pianist John Rauchenberger.

Griffin’s lyricism is something to be admired, he has stories to tell veiled in metaphor and eccentricity with Drowned In Sound describing Griffin as an ‘undiscovered genius’ in a recent feature, whilst Glen Hansard introducing August Wells as his guest at a show recently told the audience how in awe of Ken Griffin he is, describing him as “such a presence, such a power”.

With their critically acclaimed debut album ‘A Living & A Dying Game’ and a string of fine singles already under their belts 2016 is shaping up to be another busy year for August Wells as they prepare for the release of their new album “Madness Is The Mercy” which sees them once again team up with Irish independent label ‘Forever In Financial Arrears’ (FIFA Records).

The album features a selection of top quality psychedelic chamber-pop tracks with strange brass, haunting beautiful piano, and a vocal akin perhaps to something Lou Reed wrote for Sinatra to sing or if Willie Nelson borrowed Johnny Cash’s voice for a song. The album follows massive acclaim for August Wells in Ireland including national press acclaim, radio plays and TV appearances.

The Irish independent going as far as to say Griffin ” Possesses possibly the most evocative, even beautiful, Irish singing voice ever recorded”. Ken Griffin and pianist John Rauchenberger have met in the middle of differing musical pasts to form a band who would sit easily at the same table as Scott Walker or John Cale.

Jessy Lanza

‘Oh No,’ the song, is a neat, poppy rush of tight synths, lop-sided drums and pleading R and B vocals, which will have you signing along. The accompanying video of Jessy on a bike which creates its own kaleidoscopic light show is an equally refined accompaniment too.

Jessy Lanza’s “Oh No” is one of the short listed albums for this year’s Polaris Music Prize.

The Inconsistent Jukebox

The Inconsistent Jukebox has announced the forthcoming release of a new single ‘Bold Ego Fledgling’, which features vocals by Las Vegas-based Ang Kerfoot, via UK indie label Supersonic Media.

The Inconsistent Jukebox is the solo project of Barry Snaith. This is the Pandora’s Box giving rise to his work with incredible artists from all over the world and engaged in various creative genres – music, paint, surrealist human art, motion graphics, dance and video.

As a guitarist, Snaith has toured, gigged and recorded with the likes of The Ramones, Chrissie Hynde, Johnny Thunders, and David Johannsen. As a solo artist, he writes and produces soundscapes that have been used in fashion shows, the UK’s first ever digital fiction installation and much more.

His most recent collaboration, released in June via German boutique label Emerald & Doreen Recordings, is the ‘Radio Boom’ single with Jonathan L, internationally known for decades as a radio show presenter and 2015 Euro DJ Personality of the Year award.

Almost impossible to slot into a neat little ‘genre’ box, it’s fair to say that ‘Bold Ego Fledgling’ dishes up a stunning slab of gritty idiosyncratic electro rock, combining distorted glitchy guitars with Kerfoot’s deadpan spoken word turned vocals.

The video for ‘Bold Ego Fledgling’ was choreographed by Parris Goebel, who has worked with artists including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj and iKON, among others.

Featuring Goebel’s ReQuest Dance Crew, this video was shot in Auckland, Seoul, L.A., Las Vegas, Budapest and Manchester. An 8-time gold medal winner at Hip Hop International’s World Hip Hop Dance Championship, she was named 2014 Female Choreographer of the Year at the World of Dance Awards in Los Angeles.

The Devil Has the Best Tuna says this video “is one of the best you’ll see this year”. Here edgy flushed guitars mix with impeccable production, vocals and choreography, with the video rather transfixing with its dark, edgy and spellbinding dance progression and visuals.

Bell X1

Irish band, Bell X1, undoubtedly one of Ireland’s most beloved bands, is back with their seventh studio album, ARMS, out October 14, 2016. ARMS is the follow up to their 2013 critically acclaimed album Chop Chop, which became the trio’s third #1 album on the Irish Album Charts and their fourth consecutive album to be nominated for a Choice Music Prize for “Irish Album of the Year.”

ARMS is a nine-song collection radiating with shabby grace and soft-focus elegance, but there’s also a bruised, bittersweet, romantic mood throughout. Melancholic and lovelorn in places but also spirited, determined and optimistic which speaks volumes about how the band has grown sonically over their storied career. “This has been the most difficult record we’ve made, in terms of feeling like it was good enough to share, to let it go and no longer be just ours. That we’d made something different to what’s come before” says Noonan. “I know we’ve been crazed with doubt, occasional bum steers and misguided conviction along the way and we say thank you to those who’ve calmed the waters…”

Stand out tracks include “The Upswing” which Hozier recently tweeted about, describing it as “…New beautiful greatness…” – watch the video from director / animator Anna Eijsbouts HERE and “Out of Love” which The Last Mixed Tape calls, “…a stylistically bold song that moves from dynamic drops and lifts…”

Produced by the band and recorded in Dublin and Donegal by Tommy McLoughlin (from the Villagers) and Glenn Keating (from Jape), ARMS was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi) with Ross Dowling mixing the song “Out of Love.” “The title ARMS is about the idea that, as the world feels like it’s becoming a harsher place (maybe there’s just more damn noise?),” says singer Paul Noonan. “We seek out the comfort of the familiar and familial…arms.”

Bell X1 will be on tour throughout Ireland, The UK and Australia for the rest of the year with more dates to be announced. This year, they’ve headlined sold out shows at Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens and Galway Arts Festival and had top billing at the 2016 Indiependence Festival in Cork. In 2015, Bell X1 played a fully sold out acoustic tour and supported Ed Sheeran for two big shows at Croke Park, one of the largest stadiums in Europe.

Juno Award-winning rapper Classified boasts over 25 million views of his videos on YouTube, has recorded fruitful collaborations with a number of the most respected figures in hip hop culture including Snoop Dogg, Raekwon, Brother Ali, Joe Budden, RA The Rugged Man, Atmosphere and DJ Premier, and consistently sells out his own headlining tours. Classified also holds the distinction of having recorded the biggest selling rap single in Canada of all time (nope,Drake doesn’t hold that record) with “Inner Ninja” that is inching closer towards being five (5) times platinum in Canada, with over 6.5 million YouTube views.

Classified’s new “Beautiful Escape” video featuring Elijah comes as a follow up to one of his most daring collaborations to date, teaming up with RA The Rugged Man on the “Hoody and a Ballcap” remix. This single appears on his latest album Greatful that debuted at number 6 on the Canadian Albums Chart. The first single released, “No Pressure” featuring Snoop Dogg, peaked at number 65 on the Canadian Hot 100, while the second single “Filthy” features DJ Premier on production.

With innately relatable themes, intricate melodies and impeccable production, Canary’s I Am Lion album has resonated with a lot of people since it’s release a few weeks ago. Today they offer up a compact radio edit of album track ‘Chameleon’ ahead of a three date album tour kicking off this week.

Added straight to Double J rotation, frontman Matthew Kenneally says ‘Chameleon’ explores the feeling of frustration, disillusionment or disappointment in a variety of new-age literature, remedies and self help guides. “It’s also a direct reference to people that seem to be able to adapt to relationships with anyone in an often seemingly extreme way,” he says.

Receiving rave reviews for I Am Lion so far, Canary are well on the track to becoming one of the discoveries of the year for many. Chameleon follows numerous successful album singles from the band with ‘Women’s Business’, ‘Here We Go’ and ‘Fickle Heart’ making waves on HypeMachine, triple j, Double J and FBi. Don’t miss them as the kick off their three date album tour this week.

It’s no secret that it’s been something of a bumpy path for WAAX, yet here they stand in 2016 stronger than ever and proud to officially unveil a new single ‘This Everything’ and announce some tour dates in its support.

12 months on from their debut EP – Holy Sick – and radio success with single ‘I For An Eye’, the founding core trio of Marie DeVita (vocals), Tom Bloomfield (drums) and Ewan Birtwell (guitars) found themselves new compadres in Chris Antolak (guitars) and Tom Griffin (bass) and hit Plutonium Studios with producer Miro Mackie to lay down a new, forthcoming second EP. ‘This Everything’ is just the first taste, a bohemoth of tune that is as much of a new release, as it is a reintroduction to a powerful, emerging band already with notorious live show. With lines like “I got nowhere to be” and the refrain “Moving backwards slowly”, DeVita certainly writes with her feelings on her sleeve and isn’t shy in telling it how it is.

Born Joy Dead

Hot out the oven, Brisbane’s Born Joy Dead return today with ‘Sourdough’, a brand new single for daydreamers and brunch enthusiasts everywhere. There’s no mucking about either, they’ll take to Black Bear Lodge to launch this freshly baked tune in just under three weeks.

A delicious, chewy ‘F.U.’ to the daily grind, ‘Sourdough’ is a unique result for the band who recently changed up their writing style, demoing together as a group for the first time. “The band is taking on a more organic songwriting method now and as a result it feels as though we’ve created something really special and more personal to us all,” says front man (and former Hungry Kids of Hungary member) Ben Dalton.

Springing onto the airwaves in 2015 with single’s ‘Hey Blood’, ‘Stones in My Shoe’ and ‘Chains On You’, Born Joy Dead have been building their chops among the local scene. Supporting the likes of Ball Park Music, Bad//Dreems, Hey Geronimo, Babaganouj and My Own Pet Radio they’ve also impressed at a stack of headline shows including a packed debut EP launch. Add a recent signing to Mucho Bravado management, an upcoming second EP and a September single launch. Bake at 180 degrees for best results.
