‘Get Away’, the debut single for Brisbane band Vertigo, is a spirited song driven by a dynamic bass line, sharp stabbing guitar riffs, powerful drums and an intense vocal line. The layers of guitar create a punchy and atmospheric sound, and the up-tempo beat captures the energy of the band.
The song’s lyrics, written as a group during one of the band’s first formal rehearsals, are a reflection of watching a friend hold onto a poisonous relationship. Referencing The Beach Boys, and teenage love, the song is a plea to leave negative relationships behind.
Vertigo’s music came to life under the guidance of Yanto Browning whilst recording at Airlock Studios over an intense four-day period, where the band recorded numerous songs, but identified ‘Get Away’ as the most appropriate debut.
Playing living rooms, backyards and small Brisbane Fortitude Valley stages, progressively growing crowds have come to enjoy the band’s raw love of playing music together and entertaining people of varying musical tastes.
Vertigo are currently writing and playing as much music as they possibly can and are hoping to release more music soon.
Country music duo Wilson Fairchild is gearing up for their upcoming project, Songs Our Dads Wrote, which will hit stores February 7. The duo, made up of Wil and Langdon Reid, are honoring their fathers, Harold and Don Reid, who are both founding members of the legendary Country Music Hall of Fame quartet, The Statler Brothers.
The collection, which will be released via Sony Red / BFD, features nine tracks originally co-written by Harold and Don Reid. A special Wilson Fairchild penned tribute track, “The Statler Brothers Song,” will be included in Songs Our Dads Wrote. Other standout songs on the project include former Statler Brothers hit, “Guilty,” originally released in 1983, when it stormed into the Billboard Hot Country Songs top ten. The new version takes on a rootsy feel, with original Statler Brothers member Jimmy Fortune also appearing on vocals.
“We’ve been wanting to record a project like this for a long time. This is our legacy,” said Wilson Fairchild member Wil Reid. “These are the songs we cut our teeth on and learned to sing with and play guitars to. Hopefully we’ve brought some new life to some great old songs.”
Houston-bred Brian Puspos, already an internationally recognized artist both as a musician and a choreographer, has announced the release of his debut solo EP, Slow Love and Bangin’, set to drop on January 11, 2017 via CXSHXNLY. For a first listen of the EP, check out the gorgeous new music video for “Murder She Wrote” via 88rising. Slow Love and Bangin’ is available for preorder now via iTunes, with an instant download of “Murder She Wrote.” The EP features 6 tracks and enlists the talents of Grammy-nominated artist Anderson .Paak, Grammy-winning producer collective The Stereotypes (Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, EXO) and producers Nez & Rio (Schoolboy Q, Tinashe, Vic Mensa). Slow Love and Bangin’ is an intimate affair, with Brian’s smooth vocals singing lyrics of love and heartbreak over thumping beats and atmospheric synths.
With a following reaching over 1.3 million people, Brian has showcased himself as a passionate individual with a strong vision. Having gained national fame after competing twice on America’s Best Dance Crew with two separate teams, Brian has become one of the world’s most sought after choreographers, teaching and performing in 43 different countries over four years and going on to choreograph videos for and work with the likes of Chris Brown, Marques Houston, Justin Bieber and K-Pop stars SHINee and EXO, as well as creating his own videos on his YouTube channel, gaining over 55 million views. Brian has also become a recognized fashion trendsetter, launching his clothing line Vanguard Originals with fellow dancer Pat Lam. And with this upcoming EP and a recent feature in rapper GoldLink’s music video for “Spectrum,” Brian is proving himself as an artist that’s proving to be difficult to ignore in 2017.
The story of Brooklyn born and raised prog-punk band Sister Helen reaches as far back as pre-school for Eva Lawitts (bass/vox) and Clint Mobley (drums). Officially forming in 2003 while the two lifelong friends were in middle school, Sister Helen would add Nathan J. Campbell (lead vox) in 8th grade and Chris Krasnow (guitar/vox) in 10th.
Having lived full lives as DIY musicians, despite still being so young, and with Campbell due to move to Istanbul, Sister Helen is now preparing to release a final, self-titled concept album due out January 13th.
With humble beginnings that stretch from all ages gigs at Liberty Heights Tap Room to present day, Sister Helen has been at the forefront of challenging, underground rock having been a played countless venues come and gone in the ever evolving NYC landscape. Touring the country on self booked tours in recent years, the band hit a collective breaking point having pushed each other to the brink. It was this desperate energy going into the studio knowing they were recording their swan song that informs the dark, dynamic sounds and concepts across the 12 tracks.
“It’s a concept album about friendship and helplessness,” shares Lawitts. “There’s no specific narrative, but every song examines the underlying themes from a different angle. There are two perspectives, that of the ‘Friend’ (who pleads throughout the album ‘please help me’) and that of the ‘Finest Mind’ (who cries back ‘I’m so sorry I can’t help you’). These two characters sing to and about each other, trying to make sense of their relationship but are simultaneously being ruled by overwhelming doubt, narcissism and impotence.”
Look for more from Sister Helen leading up to the release of their final album with a farewell show planned for January 9th at Shea Stadium.
Brisbane purveyors of quirk-laden synth-pop FeelsClub today release their tropical new single ‘1×1’ (One By One) along with a deliciously lush video clip; they’re also set to embark on a steamy summer tour beginning on January 6.
Touching on the all-too-relatable subject of tormented perfectionism, ‘1×1’ quite literally came to songwriter St Jonnie while in the shower, and was penned in a semi-dewy state. Taking cues from artists such as Talking Heads and Future Islands, with a scintillating bass riff and punchy percussion made mellow by airy, atmospheric synths, ‘1×1′ is FeelsClub’s second official single. Directed by Creative Clones’ Pernell Marsden (who’s worked for the likes of Disney & BBC internationally), the accompanying clip was borne from a vision of an extended bender steeped in D-grade decadence. Feathers, a vibrator, crystal bottles, and purple pineapples all feature in this dizzying, delightful descent down a hedonistic rabbit hole.
Having honed their live show by sharing stages with the likes of Philadelphia Grand Jury, Gideon Benson & Bugs, previously selling out The Foundry’s back room, FeelsClub are hitting the road for a three date tour over summer and bringing the good vibrations with them, venue by venue.
Forward-thinking Danish electro-soul artist FJER, the moniker of New York- based Maja Barløse, returns with new single ‘Better’.
With a sound that calls to mind SIA and Banks laced with an upbeat, almost anthemic vibe, the singer/songwriter/producer’s raw emotional overtones mirror the introspective life reflections common to us all: both inclusive and yet isolated.
Produced by the Danish duo Nector, ‘Better’ is an infectious alt R&B-flecked electronica pop gem that slides effortlessly between bassy beats and spacey lulls, showcasing FJER shimmering vocals to perfection. FJER explains how ‘the song itself was in limbo for years until Nector boys breathed new life into it’. Having received support throughout the year from BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, The Fader, Stereogum, and Pigeons And Planes for work with the Danish Scandi-pop sensation Kill J, The duo’s production of ‘Better’ further displays their commitment to creating a captivating sound and gives FJER the platform she deserves..
Speaking more about the origins of ‘Better’ FJER explains how her approach to the track was ‘like opening a time capsule to the past’, and explores the nuances of relationships changing over time. ‘I discovered that someone I was in an on/off relationship with hadn’t changed one bit. There seemed to be this notion that we were just gonna pick things up were we left off – so it was written to remind them of how much ‘better’ we could’ve had it, had they chosen me.’
Accompanying the single is the trippy and glitch-flavored video which sees a shower soaked FJER reflecting on past experiences, knowing that the subject is now looking back and doubting his choices. FJER’s artistic vision is undeniable in this co-directed video with NYC’s Peter Anthony Red.
Ditching her studies at the notable Royal Academy of Music to pursue her dreams in New York City in 2012, FJER has seen early successes ranging from the independent release of two EP’s, ‘A New Start’ (2013) and the conceptual ‘Beautiful Home’ (2014), with early plaudits coming from 2DopeBoyz, YRB Magazine and Okayplayer whilst having key showcases in NYC’s staple BB Kings, Tammany Hall and The Bitter End under her belt.
FJER’s last single ‘Her Turn’ was making the rounds after being selected for Spotify’s Indietronica playlist with ‘Better’ looking to further cement her position within the empowering female-fronted scene. With plans to return in 2017 with her debut album on indie label QUINTIC, we can only anticipate what is next for the Danish powerhouse.
I Know Leopard
VIDEO: ‘Rather Be Lonely’ by I Know Leopard
Premiering now at YEN – “a shimmering dose of dream pop that dissects and delves into the pains of unrequited love.”
A note from the director, Wyatt Winborne –
“This video came about very serendipitously. I shot the film in the Spring of 2016, and had been stuck in post production for about 5 months before I realized that it just did not work as a short film. Initially I was disheartened. I had invested a lot of time and energy into this project but still felt entirely dissatisfied with each of the millions of cuts I produced. So, head in hands, I walked away from it. I thought I would give it time to breathe and that when I came back to it, I would have some sort of revelation that would transform the film. Unfortunately this doesn’t really happen. There’s a lot you can do in editing, but at the same time there’s only so much. After, a few months away from the project however, I was browsing through Indie Shuffle trying to find some new music, and I came across Rather Be Lonely. I instantly knew I had to try to turn the short into a music video. I was convinced it would work. So I messaged the band very unprofessionally through Facebook and they were kind enough to give me a chance. Sure enough, after the first cut I knew the video was finally going to work the way I wanted it to (thanks to the incredible depth of what, on the surface, might sound like a normal pop song). The rest is history.”
American Anyman + Lise
New York City outfit American Anymen have released their new video for ‘Nobody Made My Smile Like You Did’ with Lise, a Parisian singer and pianist, taken from their new ‘OUI EP’. This is the second collaborative release for American Anymen and LISE. In 2014, they released a demo called the ‘+EP’. In the two years that have since passed, they have jointly played shows in NYC and Paris.
American Anymen is a music collective, whose view on art is that what you have to say is more important than the equipment you own and that passion is more important than technical expertise.
It was formed in 1999 by video artist Brett Sullivan, who sings and wrote the songs on this album. Scott Fragala is a New York native who has played bass with the band since 2004. Tracy Brooks plays drums and Flugel horn on this EP.
Sullivan met French artist Lise in Bushwick, Brooklyn a few years ago at an open mic, where they admired each other’s performance. They decided that very night that they would co-create in a new music adventure.
Hailing from Paris, Lise’s eponymous debut album was released in 2011 on French label Cinq7. Versed in piano since she was five, her music path took her on a detour from her classical music education at the Conservatory of Narbonne, having discovered America for herself, as well as pop and rock music, her luggage now filled with new sounds, including Björk, The Pixies, Joni Mitchell, and The Smiths. Lise has toured the world and has undergone a transition to synth pop in recent years.
This album was recorded partially in Montreuil, Paris and finally completed in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in the fall of 2016.
“The two American Anymen + LISE albums present more personal songs. These 4 new songs are about how I dealt with my time in prison, my 13-year battle with heroin addiction, the memories of friends who made me happy but are not around to hear these new songs, and how the world is much simpler than the ruling elites make us think,” explains Brett Sullivan.
“The temperature every year is a record setting high and there is still people denying climate change. I feel the summers getting hotter and the winters shrinking in NYC. I don’t need a PhD to tell me we are destroying the environment. Things are less complex then they seem.”
“OUI is the answer to all the questions about this EP,” says Lise. “OUI, I’m really happy about this new chapter in my collaboration with American Anymen. Was the spontaneous home recording of OUI a real treat? OUI. Am i hoping for many more? OUI OUI OUI.”
Redeem is the first single to be revealed from Quiet Boy’s debut EP Earwig, due for release in Spring 2017. The track showcases a bold song writing and vocal approach that comes directly from the heart. It’s hooky, infectious, heartbreaking dream-electronica.
Quiet Boy is a solo project produced by Nick Trepka. Envision Scott Walker soundtracking Stranger Things: This is a visionary reimagining of childhood led by one of the UK’s finest musical creatives. Quiet Boy’s multi-instrumentalist band are: Russell Ditchfield, Emily Sills, Alexandra Braithwaite and Stuart Roberts.
Quiet Boy describes his music as a ‘coming of age symphony’. Drawing on his vast musical memory from nursery rhymes through to contemporary electronic music, he chews up and spits out influences, creating something utterly new.
Quiet Boy is a project born out of nostalgia, but far from throwback.
Royal Canoe release quirky visuals for off-kilter track ‘Bicycle’, taken from sophomore album “Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit”.
