Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

The Grammys

The GRAMMY®-nominated musical “Hamilton” ushers Broadway back to the GRAMMY Awards® stage after a more than five-year hiatus. GRAMMY winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and his extraordinary cast will perform a number from the acclaimed musical on the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards®, directly from the legendary Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York, marking one of only four times that the GRAMMY telecast has featured a performance live via satellite. Watch a video of the “Hamilton” cast announcing their upcoming GRAMMY performance.

The “Hamilton” performance will be the eighth time in history that musical theater has been featured on the GRAMMY Awards. Previous Broadway productions featured on the telecast include “Godspell” (1972); “The Magic Show” (1975); “Sophisticated Ladies” (1982); “La Cage Aux Folles” (1984); “Will Rogers Follies” (1992); “Riverdance” and “Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk” (1997); and, most recently, “American Idiot” (2010).

“The ‘Hamilton’ cast and crew are absolutely thrilled to be a part of this year’s GRAMMY Awards,” said Miranda, “Hamilton” creator, writer, and lead performer. “The music community’s response to our cast album has been overwhelming, and we’re honored to be a part of such a special night. To perform from our home at the Richard Rodgers Theatre is a dream come true.”

Music’s Biggest Night® just got bigger with can’t-miss moments and more than 11 new performers just added to the star-studded lineup. Nominee Justin Bieber will join fellow nominees Diplo and Skrillex to perform their GRAMMY®-nominated hit “Where Are Ü Now,” marking the duo known as Jack Ü’s first live television performance. Album Of The Year nominee Chris Stapleton will be joined by GRAMMY winners Gary Clark Jr. and Bonnie Raitt to pay tribute to legendary blues artist B.B. King. Nominee Pitbull will light the GRAMMY stage in collaboration with Travis Barker, Robin Thicke, and surprise special guests. Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry promise an electric television debut with their rock supergroup The Hollywood Vampires. Previously announced performers include Adele, James Bay, Andra Day, Ellie Goulding, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Little Big Town, Carrie Underwood, and The Weeknd.

A rock collective founded by heavy metal powerhouse Alice Cooper, The Hollywood Vampires are past GRAMMY-nominees Cooper and Johnny Depp, and GRAMMY-winner Joe Perry. Joining the Vampires will be GRAMMY-winner Matt Sorum on drums, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan on bass, Tommy Henriksen on guitar, and Bruce Witkin on piano and guitar. Artist proceeds from the Hollywood Vampires’ self-titled album will benefit The Recording Academy’s health and human services charity, MusiCares, which provides emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery resources for music people in need.

Legendary blues guitarist, 15-time GRAMMY winner, and Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient B.B. King died at age 89 in May 2015. King’s discography totaled more than 50 albums, including 1965’s Live At The Regal, one of four King recordings to be inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame®.

Taking place at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards® will be broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network, Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT..

For the first time ever, composer Martin Romberg has taken on the task of transcribing influential black metal into full classical sheet music, beginning with Emperor’s 1994 masterpiece In the Nightside Eclipse.”Martin has clearly put a lot of time and effort into transferring the Nightside Eclipse record into actual sheet music,” said original Emperor bassist Mortiis, “and it’s cool to be a small part of that.” The 72-page score includes all instruments and chord analysis for study and performance.

In the 20 years since In the Nightside Eclipse’s release, Mortiis has gone on an eponymous journey that began as solo dark, ambient music and has since evolved into a full band playing equally dark, angry, industrial-influenced heavy music. Mortiis’ long-awaited new album will be available March 4.

Porches new album Pool is out via Domino on February 5th, and ahead of its release, the band is pleased to share a new song and video, ‘Be Apart’. “’Be Apart’ is sort of about moving to New York City and wanting to belong. It’s about nightlife, about being taken away, losing control, longing for acceptance, and letting go. I imagine the music video portraying some sort of cult or family living in a mansion. The cult/mansion represent both what you might long to be a part of and also the sentiment of longing to be elsewhere, a part of what is outside.” This video comes off the back of the previously released ‘Hour’, which features Maine’s partner and frequent collaborator, Greta Kline a.k.a Frankie Cosmos.

Next month marks the much-anticipated release of Pool, Porches’ debut full-length for Domino and a major step forward for Maine —as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Tobias Jesso Jr) in Los Angeles, Pool was influenced, in part, by settling in the city as an artist and a person. Says Maine, “there was something special about recording this album in my new home. To be surrounded by the city and in my own world at the same time. I quickly became obsessed with the energy around me, and my experience of New York – I was forced to see my music in an entirely different context. This was challenging, but also exciting, when the songs started to sound like a true reflection of what I was feeling in my new surroundings.”

Porches will be taking off on an extensive 2016 North American tour, starting March 9 in Washington, DC. The tour is a co-headline with label-mate Alex G, and will feature Your Friend, another fellow Domino artist, on support for all dates. Tickets to all shows are on sale now.

Maurice White- Earth, Wind and Fire

Neil Portnow released the following statement about Maurice White’s death below. #RIP

The Recording Academy® Statement Re: Maurice White
Feb. 4, 2016

We are very saddened to learn of the passing of seven-time GRAMMY® Award winner Maurice White. A founding member and leader of Earth, Wind & Fire, who are receiving our Lifetime Achievement Award this year, Maurice was the guiding force behind the group’s success and helped create hit songs such as “Shining Star,” “September,” “After The Love Has Gone,” and so many memorable others. His unerring instincts as a musician and showman helped propel the band to international stardom, influencing countless fellow musicians in the process. While he will be greatly missed, Maurice’s contributions to music will live on. We offer our condolences to his family, friends and creative collaborators.

Droids Attack

February 26, 2016 will see the release of Sci-Fi or Die, the 4th full length offering from DROIDS ATTACK. The journey towards the completion of this masterpiece reads a tad like science fiction…..

Today the band unleashes their second song from Sci-Fi or Die, an epic eight and a half minute entitled “Mashenomak”. The song is streaming exclusive via Decibel Magazine’s “Deciblog”. Check it out HERE HERE!

Sci-Fi or Die is available for pre-order physically HERE and digitally HERE!.

Madison impresario and retro arcade game fanatic Brad Van started DROIDS ATTACK back in 2000 and has been its driving force ever since. Obsessed with tone, great riffs and a cohesive vision, Van created the music that is Sci-Fi or Die after being courted by an independent label on the heels of their 2011 release, “Must Destroy.” After a few tours and some amazing opportunities, Van was determined to continue the band’s forward momentum into the next release, and began the writing process in earnest. In a little over a year’s time, a body of work was amassed. It was 2013.

Mark Whitcomb (Things Fall Apart, Last Crack) was chosen to engineer and record Sci-Fi or Die, and in February of 2014 DROIDS ATTACK laid down the majority of the disc’s foundation at DNA Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. Immediately following the sessions, the guitars were re-recorded, vocals done and redone, heaping layers of percussion, keyboards, and obligatory sax solos added. Songs were mixed, new studio gear was purchased, and new sonic avenues were discovered. Songs were re-evaluated and more guitars were re-recorded before being remixed. It was all scrutinized down to the last note before being sent off to Masterdisk to be mastered by Roger Lian (Slayer, Pantera), who mastered and remastered it a couple of times before everything… felt… right.

Brad Van’s uncompromising vision has borne a rich landscape of titanic riffs and an apocalyptic alien landscape. At long last, the CD is no longer science fiction. DROIDS ATTACK have plans to tour and support Sci-Fi or Die in 2016.

Sci-Fi or Die Track Listing:
1. Die Glocke
2. New Plague
3. Clawhammer Suicide
4. Brahma Astra
5. Mashenomak
6. Mashenomak Strikes Again
7. The Maze
8. Rebirth

KING is happy to announce their debut album We Are KING is out via their own label, KING Creative! Recently named one of Rolling Stone’s ’10 New Artists You Need To Know,’ KING continues to make waves in the music scene, including selling out their Atlanta and Philadelphia shows almost immediately, with Atlanta selling so fast the performance upgraded to a venue twice the size as was previously booked! No stranger to NPR raves, their debut EP garnered critical acclaim with the outlet, stating “Not only does KING establish itself squarely amongst 21st – Century soul electronica with stargazing synth chords; the LA based group also stands out from many other female combos by writing, producing, singing and handling nearly all of its songs’ instrumentation.”

NPR states, “KING excels at setting a mood. The group’s music conjures an all-encompassing, dreamy, Utopian vibe;” and the album released today is being called “a well-rounded introduction to the trio with eclectic tracks” by the Chicago Sun Times.

They received raves in Billboard, Village Voice, Glamour, The Sunday Times and Guardian and Stereogum (Album of the Week) to name just a few; and Brooklyn Vegan states, “They’ve got a sound that simultaneously recalls classic soul and fits right in with the kind of psychedelic R&B that’s been a dominating force these past few years.”

José Rivera, Jr.

NYC-based Puerto Rican-American performing artist and choreographer José Rivera, Jr. has released a gorgeous, immersive video cover of Adele’s song “When We Were Young,” directed by Blake Pruitt. In the video, he grapples with his feminine and masculine identities while reflecting on memories of a past lover, seeking to address his own body dysmorphia through physical expression.

Says Rivera, “I create accessible work in a digital, shareable format to inspire change and encourage conversation on how we perceive our physical selves. The response to my live work OF CAKE & VANITY (inspired directly by my dysmorphia) created a dialogue on mental health between friends, family, and me. Seeing live performance is a privilege. Theater and most live performance was not accessible to me as a +60lb overweight gay Latino teen with an abusive, controlling father. Videos on my computer and smartphone were an escape for a physically and emotionally trapped kid. By queering traditional narratives, my work provides visibility for bodies of all backgrounds, ethnicities, shapes, sizes, and identities in an effort to merge them with pop cultural norms i.e. ‘making difference mainstream.'”

Natalie Lurie

Out today, Nashville songwriter Natalie Lurie has released her debut single, “No Mercy In The Night.” The track is available at all digital outlets and is the first single from her upcoming EP, No Mercy In The Night, due out March 25. Nashville music blog East of 8th premiered the single saying, “The emotive title track, “No Mercy In The Night,” beautifully showcases Lurie’s celestial vocals against shimmering harp-flavored indie pop.”

Natalie’s fascination with the harp began at age 7 when she spotted the instrument in a music shop. She sat down and began strumming until the shop owner finally asked she and her family to leave because the store was closing. Natalie’s harp studies have taken her across the globe. During her senior year of high school she attended the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. After that, she studied privately in France and Switzerland, before returning to the US where she completed her undergraduate work under renowned harpist Susann McDonald at Indiana University.

Though she is classically trained, Natalie has always held an interest in expanding the harp beyond its traditional classical genre. Before moving to Nashville to pursue songwriting and performing, she spent time in Muscle Shoals, AL working with original session musicians from the 1960s. After releasing No Mercy In The Night this spring, she will move to London to pursue a Master of Arts in Harp Performance at the Royal Academy of Music.

Ensemble Mik Nawooj

Bay Area-based hip hop group Ensemble Mik Nawooj not only know the vibe of the host city, but also how to craft a crowd pumping track. With that, ESPN reached out to EMN and commissioned a re-working of Marlena Shaw’s classic, “California Soul.” On “California Soul,” bandleader JooWan Kim shares, “ESPN reached out to us about a month ago asking if we’d be interested in doing our version of ‘California Soul’ for their 2016 NFL programming to which we said, ‘yes.’ The main objective was to create a song that embodied a strong sense of energy with varied moods while using 2 primary musical elements from the original track. The result, we believe, is an exciting and upbeat piece which pays homage to the diversity and generous spirit of California. It’s our love song for Cali.”
