Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Rocklahoma 2017

A massive music lineup has been announced for the 11th year of Rocklahoma, presented by Bud Light, May 26, 27 & 28, 2017 at “Catch the Fever” Festival Grounds in Pryor, Oklahoma, just outside Tulsa. Soundgarden, Def Leppard, and The Offspring lead the music lineup for America’s Biggest Memorial Day Weekend Party, which features the best current rock artists and classic bands. The three-day camping festival features music on three stages, as well as a campground stage to keep the music going all night long. With onsite camping amenities and unparalleled VIP packages, Rocklahoma lives up to its motto of “Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Rock.” In 2016, Rocklahoma had its biggest year ever, with over 70,000 fans attending the festival’s 10th year.

The current Rocklahoma band lineup is as follows: Soundgarden, Def Leppard, The Offspring, Stone Sour, Seether, Three Days Grace, The Cult, Skillet, Ratt (featuring Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, Juan Croucier and Carlos Cavazo), Jackyl, The Pretty Reckless, Pierce The Veil, Taking Back Sunday, Suicidal Tendencies, Nothing More, Buckcherry, Zakk Sabbath, Diamond Head, Fuel, Black Stone Cherry, Rival Sons, In Flames, Slaughter, Starset, Norma Jean, Fozzy, Red Sun Rising, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Wage War, Badflower, Goodbye June, DED, Royal Republic, Aeges, One Less Reason, Wildstreet, Black Tora, Lynam, Ratchet Dolls, ASKA, Moxy & The Influence, Niterain, The Tip, Diamond Lane, Nova Rex, Dead Metal Society, Deathgrip, Desire The Fire, Wild Planes, Electro_Nomicon, 3-D In Your Face, Coda Cutlass, Kore Rozzik, Retrospect All-Stars, Adakain, 5 Star Hooker, Arson City, The Chimpz, As Above So Below, Keychain, Stolen Rhodes, Nicnos, Paralandra, Hoodslide, NonHuman Era, The Mendenhall Experiment, Midnight Mob, Another Lost Year, Wild Fire, Final Drive, Sun and Flesh, BC and the Big Rig, Screaming Red Mutiny, The Adarna, Locust Grove, Skytown, Difuzer, Save the Hero, Reliance Code, Sweatin Bullets, The Normandys, Thousand Years Wide, The Fairweather, The Revolutioners and Weston Horn and the Hush.

“Every year we try to find that delicate balance of talent at Rocklahoma, and the lineup we’ve put together for 2017 will not disappoint,” commented Joe Litvag, executive producer of Rocklahoma. “Def Leppard has been on the wish list of our most loyal fans since the festival was created back in 2007, and to couple them, one of the most influential British rock bands of the last 30+ years, with Soundgarden, one of the most respected American rock bands of our generation, is really special for us. Add to the mix some of the hottest developing talent like Pierce The Veil, The Pretty Reckless, Nothing More, and Rival Sons, and I think we’ve accomplished the goal of achieving one of the most diverse festival lineups of the year anywhere. It’s going to be a really memorable weekend!”

St. Maurice

St. Maurice is a groovy, arousing, and unconventional band based out of Spartanburg, SC. Since its formation in 2011, the band has become increasingly popular by offering a wide variety of styles blended together to form a sound that has been called “ refreshingly inventive”.

St. Maurice’s version of modern progressive rock is heavily influenced by blues, funk, R&B, reggae, latin, and hip–hop, but expands to something more wildly experimental. Their frequent improvised jams are often reminiscent of the Jam Bands of earlier eras,. The band, featuring two lead singers and an exceptional rhythm section, delivers high energy performances offset by mellow grooves and ethereal vibes. The EP “3120” was released in 2013 to critical acclaim.

During 2014, St. Maurice stomped through SC, NC, VA, PA, OK, SD, IL, OH, expanding their fan base across the Mississippi River. While playing shows on throughout the East Coast in 2015 and 2016, the band released two singles, “Vash the Stampede” and “Leavin’ the South” from they’re upcoming 2017 release, Hagiograpy.

Vincent Sole

Vincent Sole is back with the first electrifying snippet of an exciting year ahead. New single ‘The Game’ – which debuted on Stoney Roads – is a clever slow-burner, unfolding over several minutes of synths that smolder and soar.

This is not about the beats, but the deceptive spaces in between. It’s this sparsity, a result of Vincent’s sessions with Malcolm Besley (Northeast Party House, City Calm Down), that allows the Melbourne artist to showcase his boldest vocal performance to date. Vincent ruminates on the sometimes gritty reality of being young and exposed to affection.

Emerging via triple j Unearthed High two years ago, Vincent took a calculated approach to 2016, honing his craft, penning a management deal with 5/4 Entertainment (City Calm Down, Tkay Maidza) and releasing just one track. ‘Don’t Waste My Time’ produced by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Ta-ku) received praise from the likes of triple j and Indie Shuffle, with the now 19-year-old wrapping the year as one of Pilerats 17 acts to watch in 2017.

All eyes are on Vincent as the year kicks into gear. Expect more music and his debut live shows very soon.

Hollow Coves

Hollow Coves show no signs of slowing down in 2017, today releasing a raw acoustic video for their single ‘Coastline’ via CLASH.

Shot at a friend’s lake on Brisbane’s bayside, the intricate video also features the duo’s mate Isaac on drums and serves as a stripped-back powerful rendition of the song’s core elements.

With two singles (‘Coastline and ‘The Woods’) from their forthcoming EP Wanderlust charting at #1 on Hype Machine and with over five million streams of their songs on Spotify alone in 2016, Hollow Coves are carrying a healthy dose of momentum into the new year. Recently announcing local and international booking deals, the duo have eyes set on their next milestone. February 03 marks the release of their Wanderlust EP and the launch date for their national tour support with folksters Woodlock, kicking off at The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay.

Wanderlust EP is released Friday, February 3 2017 with full band headline shows to be announced soon.

NORÐ presents the debut EP ”Alpha”.

NORÐ plays melodic progressive metalrock, powered by high octane energy and melancholic soundscapes. A unique style of heavy music with references to many different bands and genres and a dystopic lyrical universe about the human decadence. NORÐ reflects the nordic feeling with their combination of dreamy melodies, tight riffing and headbanger breaks. Enjoy!

Hate Unbound

Detroit, Michigan’s HATE UNBOUND are the sonic equivalent of a booze fueled fist fight among friends. All driven by raw talent, ambition, honesty and a passion for heavy metal. This passion has allowed them to share the stage with national and international acts such as Origin, Dying Fetus, Belphegor, Cephalic Carnage, Misery Index, Hate Eternal, Battlecross, Exmortus, Beyond Creation, Rivers of Nihil, Warbringer, Havok, Abigail Williams, along with a regional tour with L.A. metal veteran’s Heretic.

By focusing their dedication with a do-it-yourself work ethic and their own sound, singer Art Giammarra, guitarist Daryl Mitchell, guitarist William Cundiff, bassist Sean Demura, and drummer Franklin “Foot” Hannah continue to define the heavy landscape of today’s metal music scene. Their work consists of heavy songs that make you want to bang your head. — Paying tribute to a range of influences from Death to Lamb of God. Oh the heavy hooks…

Somewhere in the dark depths of death and thrash metal, lies the inspiration for Hate Unbound’s new album Plague. Those influences remained constant throughout Hate Unbound’s writing and arranging process which is a collaborative effort between all members of the band.

Plague was recorded, mixed and mastered during the spring and summer of 2016 at Elaire Studios which is located in the shadow of the decaying city of Detroit, Michigan. The process was delayed so Hate Unbound could perform at the New Jersey Metal Fest and Full Terror Assault 2 Open Air festivals in the summer of 2016.

Hate Unbound’s Plague is a tribute to, as well as a continuation of, all things heavy. And a salute to all headbangers everywhere.

Plague is released February 17th 2017 via Inverse Records.

Every Kid Knows

EVERY KID KNOWS are a set of musicians led by band leader JT Johnstone. From the heaven-sent sounds of psychedelia reminiscent of peak Lennon with a twist of Beck you will find a) side ‘Dandelions & Valium’ released at the start of 2017 bringing a message of hope and peace after what was a tumultuous 2016. b) side ‘Runway Song’ is one of those classic B cuts that offer humorous insight into a band of pals bantering around in the studio before breaking into a most delicate lilting lullaby that sustains its title, as you envision the plane you’re on gathering speed along the runway as you peer out the window, contemplative as you take to the sky in pursuit of some newfoundland.

Both tracks take on the twisted acoustics and alien electronics to infiltrate their heady 70s tinged mix, courtesy of classic Roland TB 303s and Korg synths and it’s plain to see some key influences for this record along the totem pole of John Lennon Plastic Ono, Ween, A Guy Called Gerald, New Order/Electronic and John Denver.

EVERY KIDS KNOWS recently soft launched their debut album ‘Defenders Of The Nish’ on Spotify/iTunes etc. Lead singer Johnstone describes the LP as, “the ‘Bleach’ to Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ which is soon to be recorded in 2017 at Sawmills in Cornwall.” This comes across either as the ramblings of an egomaniacal cult curator drawn from the mould of Anton Newsome (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Ian Brown (Stone Roses) or maybe even the zeitgeist of Kanye West. Arrogant and cocksure or just knowingly brilliant? Time will tell. Meantime the music speaks for itself.

The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes have now completed their 12 monthly releases over the course of 2016 and the full DIGITAL album is set for release on February 16th 2017 – with the CD out April 21st & Vinyl release set for Record Store Day on April 22nd via Beat Dies Records. The Danish band – Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo – have always strived to do things their own way both creatively and stylistically, and with this run of a dozen stand-alone releases, the final December track ‘Pendejo’ is no different. An undulating 12-minute epic soundscape depicting the mood of the bands creative leader Sune Rose Wagner in the lead up to the end of this incredibly interesting sonic experiment.

The Raveonettes announced that this run of tracks would see a full release via their first Pledge campaign and includes Vinyl, CD and digital versions of the album among other items to pledge for to receive the album.

The band kicked off 2016 with their RAVES-SOUND-OF-THE-MONTH playlist and uploaded the first of their freshly recorded tracks, followed by another one on the last Friday of each month until the end of the year. They decided to break with the norm and created what they labelled an ‘anti-album’. A collection of songs that aren’t bound by the constraints of the format. A 12-month ride, potentially schizophrenic and disjointed, potentially cohesive and related. How does January 2016 sound compared to July or November?! They had no idea. But the whole journey was a thrilling adventure as fans waited for what came next each month.

Miles Recommends

EP Album cover

Born in Brisbane, founded in the gutters of Bangkok, and now jamming in Melbourne, Miles Recommends is the Australian song-writing and music production duo of Des and Lou, with the occasional assistance of Dean, who likes to join in and clap out of time. They draw from, and blend together, a wide range of pop, rock, folk, country and blues influences; layering guitars, piano, organ, drums, French horn, strings and harmonies as a backdrop to our dissection of social norms. In a life full of contradictions, Miles Recommends likes to ponder some of the bigger questions.

But who is Miles?

A long, long time ago, people ventured into video stores for the latest and greatest films. Back then it wasn’t uncommon for those working in these stores to make suggestions to those who weren’t looking for the ordinary. Though we never knew him outside of those four walls, a guy named Miles was our go-to dude for recommending what we should take home and we’ll be darned if he didn’t always choose things that made us happy! ‘Extended Play’ will be officially released through all the usual online stores on February 5 under our independent music production label Flapjack Industry Records.

Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience

Don’t miss the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience with show composer Ramin Djawadi, which is set to kick off on February 20th! The massive stage show will feature 807 linear feet of video walls, transported by 15 semi trucks, traveling 11,588 miles to bring the show to audiences across North America. The show will be unlike anything to hit arenas to date and will include amazing visual elements that will totally immerse fans into the Seven Kingdoms via state of the art technology and featuring an orchestra, choirs, and effects.

Darling James

With an incredibly formative year already nothing more than a memory, Melbourne’s emerging frontrunner of intelligent pop Darling James is hitting the brand new year running. So far, so good – upon announcing a very special hometown launch party at the Gasometer Hotel, he is also proud to offer a debut music video for ‘God’s Graffiti’.

The one-man band fronted by ex-Boat People frontman James O’Brien, has just released his debut EP ]Theory Of Mind’ – a six-track affair lauded by many with three singles released and supported nationally by triple j and Double J. The uncanny sophistication in which his songwriting unravels has pricked the ears of both sides of the spectrum, proof that he can achieve the impossible and tickle the fancy of both sides of the cerebrum.

The video for ‘God’s Graffiti’ was initially an entirely different concept brainstormed with local director Luke Constable, but ended with a camera placed atop an unmanned car rolling down a slight incline. Admittedly, the pair spent more time leaping into the car to prevent it rolling onto bike paths and train tracks.

Such perils will not be undertaken at The Gasometer Hotel come Thursday February 9, where the man himself will be joined by the sonic assault of the full Darling James band at full flight. Rest assured, with Frida and Creature Fear in support, there *will* be a party to kick off what is going to be another leap forward for Darling James.

Blushing - Tether Album Cover

Blushing is an Austin, TX based dreampop / shoegaze quartet comprised of two husband and wife pairs that share a love of making melodic, atmospheric music. Blushing formed in the summer of 2015 when after a few years of writing songs on guitar Michelle found a musical partner in friend Christina who brought her lifelong classical vocal training and bass playing prowess to the project.

They then enlisted the musical talents of their marital partners, Jake on drums and Noe on lead guitar. Their styles and influences converged and after a year of evolving those original songs and honing their musical spirit, they are self-releasing their first EP tomorrow, January 13th titled “Tether” recorded, mixed and mastered by Phillip Odom at Bad Wolf Recordings in Austin, TX. The album encompasses influences from all of the bands they collectively share a deep affection for such as Cocteau Twins, The Sundays, Belly, Beach House, Real Estate, etc.

Frankie Carrera

Chicago-based recording artist Frankie Carrera releases his first single “Medication” after completing a full recovery from a tragic near death experience before a sold-out show with acclaimed rapper Waka Flocka Flame in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Frankie Carrera, evaded death after his body washed up on shore and he was flown from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico back to the United States for an intensive neck/spine operation at Alexian Brothers hospital that left him physically and emotionally scarred; not to mention with a permanent screw in his spine. “Medication” illustrates the state of mind the young singer/songwriter battled while easing the pain from his recovery through the use of prescription painkillers.

“I should’ve been a paraplegic by a matter of centimeters the surgeons told me. If it wasn’t for the person who saw me unconscious in the harbor of Cabo, and called the ambulance, I would have never made it out alive that night…”

The accident occurred just days before Carrera was scheduled to perform at the infamous nightclub, El Squid Roe, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with rapper Waka Flocka Flame. The performance would have been Carrera’s second international show to date, but was cut short after he broke his neck during aquatic activity. Carrera wrote the following message to his fans:

“It deeply saddens me and keeps me up at night knowing that all the hard work, all the new music, all the moves my team has made to curate such an amazing event, that due to a severe neck injury I will not be able to perform on Saturday. I make music for my fans and your support keeps me strong while I’m going through one of the most difficult times of my life, but rest assured I will keep fighting, stay strong and promise the music will only get better, and shows will only get bigger. I love each and every one of you, thank you for everything.”

Carrera, struck with deep sadness by the missed opportunity to perform for his fans, decided to move up the release date of his Opulence EP and dropped it the following day. Carrera was eager to get back into the studio and spent the majority of his recovery process writing lyrics for his next EP. “I wanted to get back into the studio to record ASAP, but needed time to heal. One day, I had finally had enough of this prescription daydream, so I ripped off the neck brace to record “Medication” – through the wire style”, says Carrera.

Carrera has collaborated with artists such as Cyhi The Prynce- wrote and recorded a verse on a Cyhi’s record “Flower in the Attic”, Crooked I- featured on “Don’t Close Your Eyes”, and James Thomas (YB)- currently record and produce with YB (ghostwriter/voice of Grammy nominated song “Mercy” by Kanye West).

Richie Quake

Brooklyn based producer, vocalist, songwriter, and DJ, Richie Quake, ended the year with R&B balled “Try.” Fader described the track as sounding like “…it was recorded in those moments of clarity as your inebriation peaks and the sun rises.” Now that the sun has risen on 2017, Quake is leaving the heartache of “Try” in the past and moving on with new single “SWAN.”

Out today, January 18th, “SWAN” hears Quake channel the intersection of pop music and hip-hop on the infectious three-minute single. Culminating thanks to the combination of a catchy lyrics, 808 ticks, and tempo driving percussion, “SWAN” works as well as an underground trendsetter as it does a mainstream crossover hit.

“SWAN” follows singles “Try” and “Hesitate” that found co-signs by everyone from Earmilk and Nylon, to Broad City music supervisor Matt FX. Past singles “Nighttime” and “Slow Down” won Quake critical acclaim from tastemakers including Vice, MTV, Nylon, Yahoo, and more. Possessing a unique artistic repertoire, Pigeons & Planes describes Quake’s style as “…a variety of modern sounds and production techniques, Quake crafts indie pop that seamlessly blends a variety of styles (hip-hop, experimental electronic music, alt R&B, traditional acoustic singer/songwriter music, fuzzed-out funk) into a set that feels immensely personal.”

Stay tuned for much more on the horizon in 2017 from Quake, including a brand new remix of “Hesitate” by Matt FX, Mari, and Yung Skrrt due out February 1, 2017. In the meantime, keep a look out for Quake with his NYC R&B / Hip-Hop collective 99sublime.
