Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

She Rocks Awards 2017

Shirley Manson, Ronnie Spector, Esperanza Spalding and many others Celebrate Women in the Music Industry

“By not disappearing, but by thriving, that’s how you have the last word.”
– Shirley Manson at the 2017 She Rocks Awards

The She Rocks Awards delivered another stellar event on January 20th at the Hilton Anaheim Hotel during the NAMM Show, shining a spotlight on female role models in the industry and celebrating noted women from all walks of the industry. The stellar evening was live streamed on Parade magazine. The event kicked off with local talent Brandy Robinson, winner of the #SaveAGuitar contest sponsored by Breedlove. Her smoky, lush vocals and guitar stylings warmed the crowd up for what proved to be a memorable rocking evening.

The fun moved into high gear with a raucous, crowd-stomping performance by Jenna Paone, She Rocks founder Laura B. Whitmore and the killer house band, Rock Sugah, titled “I Like It Loud”! The original song by Paone and Whitmore, with guitar solos by Gretchen Menn and Nita Strauss, was a stirring declaration that girls can rock just as loud and proud as anyone on the planet.

Following that good-spirited, musical manifesto of feminine strength, were a series of soul-lifting speeches by a roster of She Rocks Awards honorees, introduced by noted presenters speaking from the heart and inspiring all in attendance. Here’s a rundown:
• Tracy Leenman, owner of Musical Innovations music retailer, Enterprise Award, presented by Rand & Cindy Cook
• Dani Markman, Director, A&R, Disney Music Group, Vision Award, presented by Christine Devine and Radio Disney DJ Lela Brown
• Charyn Harris, conductor of music programs at A Place Called Home, Motivator Award, presented by Asya Shein
• Beverly Fowler, director of artist relations and events at PRS Guitars, Spirit Award, presented by guitarist Kat Dyson
• Leanne Summers, president/CEO of LAWIM (Los Angeles Women in Music), Achiever Award, presented by Gayl Murphy
• Shirley Manson, lead singer from multi-award winning band, Garbage, Powerhouse Award, presented by journalist Brad Tolinski
• Karrie Keyes, founder of Soundgirls and sound engineer for Pearl Jam, Mad Skills Award, presented by Heather Rafter
• Monique Boyer, director, global artist relations/PRO membership at M.A.C. Cosmetics, Champion Award, presented by Samantha Maloney, drummer and Vice President of A&R for Warner Bros. Records
• Esperanza Spalding, Grammy® Award-winning bass player, singer/songwriter, Inspire Award, presented by bassist Divinity Roxx
• Rebecca Eaddy, marketing communications manager for Roland Corporation U.S., Enterprise Award, presented by Guitar Player Magazine editor, Michael Molenda
• Lisa Foxx, radio personality at My FM on the iHeartRadio network, Dreaming Out Loud Award, presented by Lisa Loeb
• Ronnie Spector, iconic artist, Legend Award, presented by the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus
• Sarah Command, singer/songwriter and half of The Command Sisters, Next Generation Awards, presented by She Rocks founder Laura B. Whitmore
• Lita Ford, legendary rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Icon Award, presented by Nick Bowcott of Marshall Amplification

The She Rocks Awards also served as the release party for She Rocks Vol. 1 a compilation CD of eleven female guitarists released on Steve Vai’s Favored Nations Entertainment label. Vai was there to introduce the project and kick off the first performance from the album; Kat Dyson and her song “U Know What I Like.”

Two Co-Hosts for the event, FOX KTTV anchor Christine Devine and Daisy Rock Girl Guitars CEO Tish Ciravolo, helped Whitmore with introductions and a well-rounded program that included performances by Kat Dyson, Victoria Renee, all-female tribute band Lez Zeppelin, Yasi Hofer, ingénue sibling guitarists The Command Sisters and the house band led by Divinity Roxx. The highlight of the evening was the booming finale, featuring the great Lita Ford performing her hit “Kiss Me Deadly” backed by seven other female guitarists from She Rocks Vol. 1.

The event is produced by the Women’s International Music Network, an organization whose mission is to advocate for women in the music industry and to shine a spotlight on female role models.

In addition, there is an accompanying silent auction live through January 31, 2017, which features guitars, music, audio gear, jewelry, spa products and much more. Anyone can bid at Proceeds help them to benefit, an organization that helps train girls for careers in audio.

Evening Darling

ED17 (1)

Sometimes you need to refresh to move forward. Having spent three years cutting their teeth in the NYC live music scene under their former identity, The Hunting Party, Erica Lane (lead vocals), Nick Lerangis (guitars, vox), Dan Burke (drums) and Dave Letchinger (keyboard) took stock of where they were at following the release of that band’s last EP.

The quartet would strike out on their own honing their alt-folk, americana style with shows played in towns big and small all up and down the Eastern seaboard. Burke insists that he saw “Evening, Darling!” sprayed across the side of a desolate Queens warehouse while driving to the band’s rehearsal studio in Gowanus. Although the band has been unable to locate that tag since, they quickly adopted it as their new moniker.

With Ryan “Rusty” Loftus (guitars) and Brett Saxon (bass) added to the fold, Evening Darling laid down their debut, self-titled LP out mid-April, 2017. Working with producer Jeremy Backofen (The Felice Brothers), the band crafts a bright, vibrant, rich alt-folk sound with Lane’s soaring vocal leading the way or in beautiful harmony with Lerangis.

Look for more from Evening Darling leading up to the drop of their debut album with a record release show planned for mid-April. Email if you manage to find the “Evening, Darling!” graffiti somewhere along the BQE. They’ll reward you handsomely.

Oddisee has unveiled the second song from his forthcoming full-length album ‘The Iceberg,’ out February 24 on Mello Music Group. The song debuted last night on Ebro’s Beats 1 radio show. “Like Really” is a cutting song, the prolific MC and producer reflecting a state of disbelief in the political climate. For the second verse Oddisee flips the meaning to address how some perceive of him as an artist. It’s set to deep soul with chilly trap inflections and is an important piece in the overall concept of ‘The Iceberg.’

“How you gonna make us great when we were never really that amazing /
take it back what, I don’t find hanging black lives entertaining/
how do you police the streets of a neighborhood you do not engage in/
why a brother get three for a sack while your brother go free for a raping”

Oddisee has announced a show in LA on February 3, where he will open the 2017 season of the First Friday’s series at the Natural History Museum. On January 27 he will host a full rehearsal with his band Good Compny in his hometown of Washington, D.C., open to the public at St. Stephen’s Church. A three-month international tour begins March 2 in Paris.

The first song to be released from the album was the deep house-inflected “Things,” and subsequently featured on NPR, Stereogum and many others. New York Magazine also included the album in their most anticipated releases of 2017, saying: “he deftly uses his own experiences to reflect on the greater state of humanity, in all its beauty and flaws.”

Lunch Ladies

Growing up along the coast near the beaches of New Jersey, you’re naturally imbued with a particular shade of wistfulness, longing and desire. House shows in Long Branch or New Brunswick, late night dutch coffees at the Inkwell, long drives blasting music with no destinations; these experiences spread out across four seasons influence every artist born and raised in the area in varied ways.

One of the more promising upstarts out of central NJ, Lunch Ladies, package these sentiments with a hazy, dreamy, jangle-pop sound that evokes the golden age of Creation Records. Having made a name for themselves in all of the tri-state DIY circles, Lunch Ladies are now readying the release of their debut full-length, Down on Sunset Strip, out March 10th, 2017 via Good Eye Records.

Consisting of Matt Whitley (vox, guitar), Cynthia Rittenbach (vox, bass), Matt Ramiz (vox, guitar) and Peter Gargano (drums), Lunch Ladies foster a creative dynamic that embraces harmony, in its many forms, with the three vocalists trading lead and support duties across the album’s seven tracks. From the adrenaline rush, ironically, of “Lazy” to the dreamy balladry of “Sad Jeans,” the young quartet explores complex emotions across the breadth of their beautiful aural aesthetic.

Stay tuned for more from Lunch Ladies with several single drops to come in advance of March 10th, 2017.

Lunch Ladies tour dates:

1/28 – Blackburn Hall – Watchung, NJ

2/7 – The Meatlocker – Montclair, NJ

2/15 – Shea Stadium – Brooklyn, NY

3/10 – The J House – New Brunswick, NJ (release show)

4/14 – Brighton Bar – Long Branch, NJ

After studying classical violin at the Paris Conservatory, Jean Luc Ponty turned to jazz in the 60’s. Thanks to his revolutionary style he collaborated with some of the best European and American musicians such as Eddy Louiss, Daniel Humair, Niels Henning-Ørsted Pedersen, John Lewis, Lalo Schifrin, and Quincy Jones. He became the first bebop violinist and US jazz magazine “Down Beat” created a violin category for him in its critics’ poll, until then violin was in the ‘miscellaneous instruments’ category. His pioneering work on the electric violin in the 70’s attracted the attention of pop and rock musicians, he recorded with Elton John and participated to several tours and legendary recordings with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra. In 1975 he founded his own band and became one of the most prominent figures of the jazz-fusion movement in the USA, selling millions of albums that all reached the top of the US charts. Ponty’s most recent album “The Atacama Experience” is considered as one if his best and to this day Ponty keeps touring with his band around the world.

Ponty also collaborates on occasional projects such as “The Rite of Strings” with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola. In 2011 Ponty joined the mythical American group RETURN TO FOREVER IV with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Frank Gambale for a world tour spanning on 5 continents.

Ponty received the 2007 Jazz Trophy in Germany, the medal of Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in France in 2009, the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Awards in Ireland, and the Grand Prix of the Sochi Arts Festival in 2012 in Russia from the hands of world famous classical violist and orchestra conductor Yuri Bashmet. In 2012 Ponty performed his music with Orchestre Pasdeloup for his 50-year career celebration at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, then again with symphony orchestras in Brazil, Russia and Hungary in 2012 and 2013.

In April 2013 Herbie Hancock invited him to perform in Istanbul at “International Jazz Day” for UNESCO. Ponty also founded a new quartet with his daughter, pianist-singer-composer Clara Ponty which performed in France and Germany in 2014. Ponty also performed with the 89 musicians of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orcherstra for the Siberian Christmas Festival.

In 2014 Ponty recorded an album as an acoustic trio with Stanley Clarke on double bass and Gypsy-French guitarist Bireli Lagrene, which was released on Impulse/Universal in the Fall 2015.

Jean Luc recently formed the Anderson Ponty Band with Jon Anderson, co-founder and lead singer of British progressive rock band YES, a CD and DVD was released in 2015 followed by a North American concert tour.

The Delay In The Universal Loop

Split Consciousness is the second critically acclaimed record from 21-year-old southern Italian producer Dylan Iuliano aka The Delay In The Universal Loop. Check it out below!

Rafael Vigilantics

Los Angeles based artist Rafael Vigilantics has premiered his new single and music video for “Ramblin’ Bones.” The track will be included in his upcoming new album Orleans, which will be released in early 2017. His haunting, captivating voice is equally matched by his unique brand of Folk, Neo Soul & Hip-Hop. The track was co-written with Noah Harmon of the Airborne Toxic Event. Vigilantics has been featured by Huffington Post, Wohm!, Purevolume, The Deli, Willamette Week and many others.

Thieves Like Us

After a four-year hiatus, Thieves Like Us return with their fifth eponymously titled record. The Swedish/American band, named after a New Order song, tracked and produced the new record in late 2015. The new self-titled record reinvents the band’s cosmic song based aesthetic with the introduction of live bass (Thomas Franklin) and drums (Tore Knipping), steering its songs into more spirited waters.

Guitarist Chris Wackrow and his Felt-like guitar overdubs delicately fill out the rhythmic spaces with many a subtle and sparkling riff. Backing singers Martine Duverglas, Mia Von Matt, and Monika Martinez substantiate Andy Grier’s frail and airy vocals elevating the music to a more adult modern rock sound similar to the complimentary vocals of Metronomy. The end result is an intricate, accessible pop record and a natural progression of the band’s previous record Bleed Bleed Bleed.

While the new album does feature upbeat light pop movers like Dani and E-Problems, Thieves Like Us also holds its share of melancholic, introspective and socio-political tunes (Jennifer, Broken Mirror, Israel). As always, the band cites economic peril, over-militarization and technology as some of the albums cheerier themes. And again — maybe the band possess just enough world perspective to unify us all in dancing to the bad news.

Thieves Like Us is based in Berlin, but comprised of musicians from all over the world. Starting out as DJs, the band soon evolved into a full band that blends electronic, rock, and pop music. Effortlessly they take from (italo) disco, glam, and punk to create their own distinctive sound that has garnered comparisons to numerous dance-pop acts of the early 2000s, such as Metronomy, Hot Chip and Crystal Castles. Originally discovered by French Kitsuné Records, the band also released their previous record Bleed Bleed Bleed on Captured Tracks in the US.

The new full-length album Thieves Like Us will be out in 2017 worldwide via Seayou Records/Rough Trade. The artwork depicts a re-enactment of Hans Conrad Schumann’s iconic jump from communist German Democratic Republic to freedom; by a black woman wearing the same pilot suit that singer Andy Grier’s father wore in Vietnam. We leave its interpretation to the listener.

After the announcement of the upcoming co-headlining European tour with Temperance, Italian power metallers Overtures ( are releasing some live-videos recorded during the Italian summer tour, where the band played in more than 20 shows, including Gods of Metal (supporting Rammstein, Korn, Megadeth & more), SpazioRock Festival (supporting Stratovarius, Powerwolf & more) and the support to Saxon in their Italian concerts. ‘Unshared Worlds’ was the very first single from the latest album ‘Artifacts’ (May 2016, Sleaszy Rider Records, and it is now available in its live version with the audio taken from the show at Zona Roveri, Bologna (IT) supporting Saxon’s Battering Ram World Tour.

Overtures are also announcing the release of a second official videoclip in the first weeks of February, for the song GO(LD) and a change of location for the French show of the upcoming european-tour:

Throw The Fight

Throw the Fight are excited to announce they are playing this summer’s Rock USA in Wisconsin with Ozzy, Slayer, Lamb Of God, Volbeat and many more. The band recently released their new album ‘Transmissions’ on Bullet Tooth, produced by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, whose credits include August Burns Red, Texas In July, Everclear, Affiance, Live, and more. The music video for the song “Don’t Let Me Down” premiered recently at Loudwire and VEVO. Guitarist Ryan Baustert commented, “No.Style Productions did a killer job with the video. ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ is the first track on the record and they did a great job visually representing the first impression people will have. We kept the concept simple and didn’t really want to overthink it too much. Just the band and our friends having a good time.”

‘Transmissions’ is the follow-up to ‘What Doesn’t Kill Us’, which was produced by John Feldmann (Atreyu, The Used). That album has impressively sold 10,000 copies worldwide since release and landed on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Throw the Fight followed the album with the 2013-released The Vault EP, which also landed on Billboard’s Heatseekers and Alternative New Artist charts.”We wanted to return when we had that fire going again. We demoed over 25 songs for this record in four months,” said guitarist Ryan Baustert. “It ended up being the largest body of material we’ve ever had to work with for an album. This is by far the heaviest, most exciting group of Throw The Fight songs we’ve done. This is it. This is the best of the best.”

Since arriving on the scene, Throw the Fight, who are based in Minneapolis, have toured nationally, logging dates with Bullet For My Valentine, Black Veil Brides, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Sevendust, and more. They also secured slots on festivals such as The Vans Warped Tour & Taste of Chaos.

QuazztheKid releases a new music video for his track “Mollycoddle” off the EP To Who m It May Concern that was released in March 2016. A retro ssuburban home serves as a physical analogy for a time in the artist’s life now past. As the
protagonist attempts to experience his memories of a lost love, he’s harassed by demons of the present. Directed by Ben Ruffman-Cohen , the video captures the essence of this melodic trap song centered on desire and discovery.

QuazztheKid is the moniker of Akeem Hawkins, a saxophonist, producer and rapper. Originally from Oakland, California, he made his way to New York to study Jazz at The New School. As a saxophonist and vocalist, he’s performed with Fresh Daily , Sami Stevens , Freelance , Doja Cat and Shareef Keyes and The Groove at venues that include Pianos, Brooklyn Bowl and Arlene’s Grocery. QuazztheKid is also a part of Brooklyn based collective FreshMind Music , whose focus is on multimedia artwork and innovative content.

As he searches to find himself in the video, the audience is exposed to the many personalities of QuazztheKid. During an interview on The Uncle Nacho Show in September 2016, QuazztheKid was asked about the song “Mollycoddle,” stating “I wrote this for a special somebody. During [that] time it was so colorful and you can hear it […] ‘Mollycoddle’ was the
one I wanted to base the project around.” QuazztheKid will be busy in 2017 performing at local New York venues including his residency at Leftfield and Desmond’s Tavern, so stay tuned for more from QuazztheKid!

Mating Ritual and Satchmode

Don’t miss Mating Ritual and and Satchmode at Hi Hat in LA on February 10th!

On the heels of a critically-acclaimed EP, four #1’s on Hype Machine, topping the Spotify viral charts and grabbing the Zane Lowe stamp of approval, Mating Ritual will release their debut album How You Gonna Stop It? as two six-track volumes in 2017. Listen to the title track, which premiered on Impose, and PRESS HERE to listen to “Night Lies (feat. Lizzy Land),” which was revealed via Stereogum. Mating Ritual’s Ryan Marshall Lawhon’s inability to sit still is his driving force in the creation of his music. After the hiatus of his prior band Pacific Air, Ryan cranked up his songwriting prolificacy and found immense freedom in the world of independent recording and created what he calls Post-Genre-Pop under the alias Mating Ritual. How You Gonna Stop It? was recorded over a two year period in apartments, garages and lofts all over Los Angeles county, as well as several traditional studios and one five-day cruise to Puerto Vallarta. The end result was a collection of songs that juxtaposes vision and clarity with varying fidelity and grit to create an unexpected textural experience.

LA-based dream pop band Satchmode will release their highly-anticipated debut album Love Hz on February 7, 2017. Listen to infectious lead single “Happiness,” which premiered on All Things Go. With propulsive synths, neon energy, and hypnotic electro pop harmonies, the Los Angeles quartet—Gabe, Eric Downs, Bo Jacobson, and Sam Skolfield—bring heartbreak to the dance floor. Over the course of 2014’s Collide EP and the Afterglow EP in 2015, they landed 5 tracks on the Top 10 of Hype Machine, racked up 4 million-plus cumulative streams, and earned acclaim from outlets such as Dancing Astronaut, Indie Shuffle, The Wild Honey Pie, and many more in addition to placements on prominent YouTube channels such as La Bella Musique and Mr. Suicide Sheep. Over the past two years, lead singer/songwriter/producer Gabe Donnay pieced together the songs that would become Love Hz as sonic skeletons in his home studio to expand them with the band in tow.

NZ music writer Simon Sweetman had an early listen to Unearthing and posted to his blog page “It is brutal and beautiful in equal measures.” We have set up a PledgeMusic campaign to fund a vinyl pressing of the album, and to offer some limited edition items such as canvas & poster prints of the artwork. On the day of release, the PledgeMusic campaign will be live at: The full album will be available for publicly available to stream and download here:

Rebuilt Electric

Donovan sang about Atlantis, the KLF and Therion believed in the mystical continent of “Mu” and Rebuilt Electric found their own state called “Popistan” solemnly declaring themselves to its popes. On 17/01/17 the “Punch Pop” Duo releases their debüt single “Naked (I Bet You Look Good)” via our Sublabel Handmade Tunes. The song combines a Punk attitude and “Stoner Rock riffs” with modern radio suitable Synthie Pop. Rebuilt Electric manage the balancing act of doing their own thing, being authentic and fulfilling music-historical clichés to kick’em subsequently. And their really writing catchy tune by the way!

Mari Hajem

Hailing from Lier in the south of Norway Mari Hajem is described as an artist thats easy to listen to, but hard to describe. Despite her young age of 22, Mari has already accomplished a lot in her musical career. Some of the highlights includes warm up slots for bands such as Kings Of Convenience, Monica Heldal and Ingrid Olava. With her 4-pice band Mari has already played several festivals in north England including Threshold Festival, LIMF (Liverpool International Music festival), and major Norwegian festivals such as Kongsberg Jazz Festival and Hove Festivalen. Mari Is located in the Scandinavian music hub; Oslo.

Julien Baker

Memphis, TN-based songwriter Julien Baker is the latest addition to the renowned Matador Records roster. The 21-year-old’s devastating and vulnerable debut album, Sprained Ankle, which was released in 2015, is available now digitally, with a physical re-release dropping worldwide on March 17th (ex-US and Australia).

Today fans can hear a previously unreleased song “Funeral Pyre,” which is the title-track and A-side for Baker’s new 7” also coming out on March 17th on Matador. Only Baker can make a song with such a darkly macabre title so heartbreakingly gorgeous, with her signature hushed-yet-lofty vocals soaring over a quietly fingerpicked melody that crescendos into layered, almost-orchestral beauty. The B-side, “Distant Solar System,” is another unheard song from the Sprained Ankle sessions that will be available digitally and physically on release day.

After extensive touring in 2015 and 2016, selling out major US markets, Baker shows no signs of slowing down in 2017. Midwestern US audiences can catch her on a short run of dates this winter, which are followed by a lengthy European tour in the spring. The full list of tour dates can be found below.

Forward-thinking Danish electro-soul artist FJER, the moniker of New York- based Maja Barløse, returns with new single ‘Better’.

With a sound that calls to mind SIA and Banks laced with an upbeat, almost anthemic vibe, the singer/songwriter/producer’s raw emotional overtones mirror the introspective life reflections common to us all: both inclusive and yet isolated.

Produced by the Danish duo Nector, ‘Better’ is an infectious alt R&B-flecked electronica pop gem that slides effortlessly between bassy beats and spacey lulls, showcasing FJER shimmering vocals to perfection. FJER explains how ‘the song itself was in limbo for years until Nector boys breathed new life into it’. Having received support throughout the year from BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, The Fader, Stereogum, and Pigeons And Planes for work with the Danish Scandi-pop sensation KIll J, The duo’s production of ‘Better’ further displays their commitment to creating a captivating sound and gives FJER the platform she deserves.

Speaking more about the origins of ‘Better’ FJER explains how her approach to the track was ‘like opening a time capsule to the past’, and explores the nuances of relationships changing over time. ‘I discovered that someone I was in an on/off relationship with hadn’t changed one bit. There seemed to be this notion that we were just gonna pick things up were we left off – so it was written to remind them of how much ‘better’ we could’ve had it, had they chosen me.’

Accompanying the single is the trippy and glitch-flavored video which sees a shower soaked FJER reflecting on past experiences, knowing that the subject is now looking back and doubting his choices. FJER’s artistic vision is undeniable in this co-directed video with NYC’s Peter Anthony Red.

Ditching her studies at the notable Royal Academy of Music to pursue her dreams in New York City in 2012, FJER has seen early successes ranging from the independent release of two EP’s, ‘A New Start’ (2013) and the conceptual ‘Beautiful Home’ (2014), with early plaudits coming from 2DopeBoyz, YRB Magazine and Okayplayer whilst having key showcases in NYC’s staple BB Kings, Tammany Hall and The Bitter End under her belt.

FJER’s last single ‘Her Turn’ was making the rounds after being selected for Spotify’s ‘Indietronica’ playlist, and now with ‘Better’ being included in their flagship ‘Weekly Buzz’ playlist and a championed by The Line Of Best Fit as their top track of the week, she further cements her position within the empowering female-fronted scene. The debut album from this rising Danish powerhouse will drop in 2017 on indie label QUINTIC.
