Press Release Roundup: January 29

posted January 29, 2016, 1:47 pm by Carlita | Filed Under Festivals, Music News, Press Release Roundup, Releases, Tour | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Once upon a time…(and that time was Tuesday) we announced amazingly talented producer extraordinaire Tony Visconti as one of our 2016 Keynote Speakers! Most recently recognized for producing David Bowie’s latest and final album, Blackstar, Visconti was a long time producer, collaborator and friend to the Thin White Duke. And he has numerous equally impressive credits and collaborations beyond that. Seriously this guy’s contact list, it must be bananas.

Since we’re such excitement junkies, we also revealed that my main stooge, Mr. Iggy Pop himself, is going to play for us – I mean for you, he’s totally playing for you. Just before giving birth to Post Pop Depression on March 18, he will play at SXSW with his newest band featuring this really tall guy who has been in a bunch of other bands. You might recognize him…

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE. We threw up only another 140+ artist confirmations today. We got Car Seat Headrest. Boogie. Leon Russell. Got some Baby Shakes. Little Hurricane. Beach Slang. Remember Haddaway? Of course you do. We’ve got him, too.

New Album “X-No Absolutes” out February 5th on SPV/Steamhammer

American Power Trio PRONG will release their new album “X-No Absolutes” on February 5th via SPV/Steamhammer. Today, Loudwire is exclusively premiering the second single from the album “Cut and Dry”. Check out the premiere HERE!

X – No Absolutes is PRONG at their very best. The sheer intensity and ferocity of the albums opening triumvirate “Ultimate Authority”, “Sense Of Ease” and “Without Words” leaves the listener gasping for air. The title track is crunchy and catchy at the same time. “Do Nothing” may be as close as you will ever hear PRONG get to a ballad and shows the enormous progress and confidence Victor has made vocally. It is hard to find a weak spot here, notably Victor mentions that “sequencing the album was a difficult task; every song is so strong in it’s own way”.

Again produced by Tommy Victor, this time with trusted collaborator Chris Collier as co-producer and engineer, X – No Absolutes also broadens the horizon sonically.

EMBRZ consistently offers masterfully executed productions and his latest offering “Saved” is no different. Long time fans of the rising star will be particularly delighted by this free release and may even find its soundscape familiar. “It’s quite old school EMBRZ, definitely one for the fans”, the Dublin native raves, “This track has come a long way from the demo version I put out two years ago. I decided to re-work it over Christmas and I’m really pleased with how it turned out”.

True to his signature style, the track is sculpted around a dreamy female vocal. This time, the vocal is a sample from Gabrielle Aplin’s “My Salvation” – one of our times most haunting vocals heard to date.

Puerto Rico’s ÌFÉ fuses the Afro-Caribbean folklore music of Rumba and Yoruban prayer songs with the digital sounds of Jamaican dancehall, creating a musical space and expression altogether its own. The project was created by drummer/producer/singer Otura Mun. “House of Love (Ogbe Yekun)” is the group’s second single and is now available at all digital services.

“‘House of Love’ was recorded live using improvised electronic instruments,” Otura Mun explains. “At times tender, at other moments seductive and flirtatious, the song is an invitation and an offering to those forces that walk among us. It is a reminder that life is nothing if not a constant act of giving to receive.”

House of Love” follows the group’s debut single released this past fall, “3 Mujeres (Iború Iboya Ibosheshé).” ÌFÉ is the Yoruban word for “Love” as well as “Expansion.” Both are pivotal themes in the group’s music. “I wanted to make something that made me feel like when I’m playing, my soul is flying,” Mun says of “3 Mujeres.”

Mun has been a vanguard artist in Puerto Rico’s independent music scene since the late 1990s, producing critically acclaimed releases for many of the island’s most important voices including Mima, Cultura Profetica and Calma Carmona. ÌFÉ is Otura Mun’s first solo project.

“I am an African American living in the Caribbean, speaking Spanish and Yoruba, initiated as a Babalawo in Cuba,” says Otura Mun. “I was raised on Indiana funk, Texas blues and Indie Rock, Dallas Hip Hop and Soul, Salsa gorda d

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

The program of the 37th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal presented by TD in collaboration with Rio Tinto just got even better! Tickets for these new concerts go on sale Friday, January 29 at noon.

Ms. Lauryn Hill — July 5, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA — Catapulted to fame as a member of the Fugees, grande dame of R&B Lauryn Hill returns to the Festival after a long absence–14 years, to be exact. In the meantime, she has enhanced a rich repertoire blending rap, soul, reggae and R&B with two major projects we can’t wait to discover: the acoustic concert series Small Axe, an intimate window on her musical world, and her recent homage to Nina Simone, folding her magnificent voice into the music of the queen of jazz.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds — July 9, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA — Soaring in the same supremely talented ether of Britpop predecessors Oasis, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds continue their UK hitmaking trajectory with their 2nd album, Chasing Yesterday (2015), topping the charts out of the box. Here we find Noel at the height of his estimable powers, fully inspired and surrounded by a handful of excellent musicians digging into supremely catchy pop-rock that matches classicism with new musical energy. Gallagher wings in with music that sings like a… bird. Co-produced with evenko.

Chick Corea trio with Christian McBride and Brian Blade — July 1, 7 p.m., Maison symphonique — The legendary pianist’s last visit dates back to 2012, when he shared the bill with Gary Burton. As part of a tour marking his 75th birthday, Chick Corea arrives this time with a trio and settles into the Maison symphonique, accompanied by virtuosos Christian McBride on bass and Brian Blade on drums, longtime collaborators as part of the famed Five Peace Band, with whom he released the Grammy-winning album Trilogy (2014 Best Jazz Instrumental Album).

Jay-Jay Johanson — July 6, 6 p.m., Club Soda — Quite simply astonishing in the Gesù in his last Montreal visit back in February 2015, Jay-Jay Johanson arrives with material from his latest album, the 11th in a marvelous 20-year career spent exploring the boundaries of otherworldly sound. A master melancholist weaving a musical world between electro, jazz and trip-hop, the Swedish artist once again invites us to a magical evening of delicate melodies and airy rhythms from the soul of a man possessed.

Avishai Cohen trio — July 2, 8 p.m., Monument-National — One year after having to cancel his Festival show to our great disappointment, illustrious Israeli double bassist Avishai Cohen returns to his Montreal audience. Accompanied by pianist Nitai Hershkovits and drummer Daniel Dor, with whom he shares a rare creative chemistry, he’ll unveil pieces from the album From Darkness, music of remarkable finesse featuring 11 rich and eclectic jazz compositions that shimmer with bold playing and subtle harmonies.

Fred Hersch solo — July 5, 10:30 p.m., Gesù — “When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are currently two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else”, according to All About Jazz. With some 50 albums to his credit as a bandleader or accompanist, Fred Hersch is considered one of the most talented composers on the current jazz scene, recognized for the immense beauty and sensitivity of his style. In other words, combine the intimacy of the Gesù and a player of this caliber, and this is a musical event you simply cannot miss…

Emilie-Claire Barlow Orchestral — July 6, 7 p.m., Maison symphonique — After winning over critics with her exacting, airy voice, this newest star of Canadian jazz became the darling of the Festival after her revelatory 2007 debut. With her latest album, Clear Day, the artist met a most daunting challenge: revisiting an eclectic repertoire including Brad Mehldau, Simon & Garfunkel, Coldplay, Van Morrison and Queen, featuring orchestral arrangements, strings, brass and piano. Best of all, Emilie-Claire Barlow brings her gem of an album to the Maison symphonique, where she will perform in that orchestral format!

Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon
• Place des Arts and Maison symphonique de Montréal: 175 Ste. Catherine Street West; 514 842-2112, 1 866 842-2112 or

Davide Pannozzo

With a style that is a blend between Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix, Davide Pannozzo has been described by critics as one of the most interesting artists of contemporary blues guitar. After studying Classical Guitar at the age of six, Pannozzo went on to graduate from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome and has since performed at a number of clubs and festivals in Italy (Pistoia Blues, Ameno Blues, Blues in Town, Accadia Blues,
Liri Blues etc.) and abroad (The Bitter End in NYC, Bass Player in Los Angeles, IBC in Memphis, Ronnie Scott’s in London, Fete de la Musique in Paris, International Jazz Fest in Bucharest, Taubertal Festival in Frankfurt, etc.) and played alongside iconic artists such as George Benson, Phil Palmer, David Garfield, and Mark Mondesir.

Inspired by guitar legends Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, Davide Pannozzo has collaborated with Maestro Pippo Caruso for the TV show “Domenica IN”, with the Oscar-winning Maestro Luis Bacalov for “Mediterranean Harbor” produced by Walt Disney, and masters Franco Piersanti and Nicola Piovani. His first album, “Born Electric” was released by EmArcy/Universal Music to rave reviews, and featured special guests Robben Ford, Carl Verheyen, and David Garfield. Pannozzo’s latest work, “A Portrait of Jimi Hendrix” is an amazing tribute to arguably the most famous guitarist ever. The album reached #1 on iTunes Top 100 Blues charts in Italy and USA.

Evol Walks

Fronted by Gold Coast born and bred Leah Martin-Brown, Gold Coast hard hitting five-piece, Evol Walks, will release their fourth single “Without Me” world-wide on January 29. Produced by Canadian producer Brian Howes (Hinder/Airbourne/Hedley/Skillet/Simple Plan) in Los Angeles, “Without Me” is an intensely raw and powerful ballad that separates the band from their previous releases without losing their epic trademark sound. “‘Without Me’ isn’t your typical ballad,” explains Leah. “It’s a farewell song to someone whom you used to care about very much but have now fallen out of love with”.

Collecting influence from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and AC/DC to name a few, it’s not hard to hear how Evol Walks got to their organic blistering guitar riffs and raw powerful female vocals thus creating the ultimate Rock n Roll blend. There is no sign of slowing down for the band with 2016 already off to a hot start, not only with the release of “Without Me” but also with an extensive tour of North America which will have them away from Australian shores for a good part of the year. They will go to from there to perform at a coveted showcase at the Global Rock Summit and Musexpo music conferences in Los Angeles in April.

Dario Lorina

Black Label Society guitarist Dario Lorina to start recording second solo album for Shrapnel Records this month

In September of 2013, his critically acclaimed debut solo record for Shrapnel Records was released. On January 1st, 2014, Dario became the newest member of Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society and has been touring consistently throughout the USA, Canada, South America, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand since. Dario has his own signature model with LAG guitars called “The Arkanator” which is a hybrid of their Imperator and Arkane models. Dario is entering Studio 5A in Valencia California later this month with engineer/producer Fred Archambault, known for his work with Alice Cooper and Avenged Sevenfold, among others, to begin recording.

Regarding his new record Dario said, “I’m always learning as a guitar player and taking influence as a musician and artist. This record will encapsulate the progression of my playing and newer influences while maintaining the core stylistic traits of my first record”. In February 2016, Dario will be playing on the Axes and Anchors Cruise along with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, and other top rock guitarists, performing acoustically with Zakk, giving clinics and playing songs from his first Shrapnel Records solo record.

LEPROUS have been recently been nominated for the Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian Grammy award, for their latest album “The Congregation” in the category “Best Metal Album” alongside Enslaved, Tsjuder and Kampfar. The ceremony takes place in Oslo / Norway tomorrow, January 30th, so check more details here:

Einar Solberg / LEPROUS (Lead Vocals & Synth) commented about the band’s nomination:
“The Congregation” has been well approved by both fans, press, our label(s), agents, promoters a.o., but it’s something special to receive recognition from Norway’s most important music award! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching “Spellemannsprisen” on the television, so it’s quite surrealistic that we’re suddenly one of the nominees. For us it’s a big thing. just to be nominated, but of course we wound’t have anything against it, landing in our camp.”

Hands Like Houses

Aussie rock band Hands Like Houses are on the verge of a mainstream breakout hit with the release of their long-awaited third studio album, Dissonants, that’s due out on February 26th via Rise Records. To further fan the flames of anticipation, the band has partnered today with to reveal a video for their new song “Colourblind.” Watch the video now at

“It feels damned good to get this one out – even more so, with such a sweet video by our dear friend Megan Thompson,” says singer Trenton Woodley. “”Colourblind” is about our cultural obsession with binary ideas – black and white, or politically left or right, for or against, right or wrong. We’re so caught up in black, white and the infinite shades of grey we forget that colour is in everything. Oh and yes, there is a ‘u’ in “Colourblind.” We’re Australian.”

Over the last several months, Hands Like Houses has teased fans with new tracks “I Am” and “New Romantics,” and with the release of “Colourblind” excitement for Dissonants will reach an unprecedented heights on a global scale.

Dissonants was produced by James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Underoath), and features twelve massive rock-radio anthems. Fans can pre-order the album now at iTunes (w/instant download of “Colourblind”) and

Follow the band at for additional updates.

iSHi is now coming forth with his sound and aesthetic by sharing the video for his new track “We Run” featuring French Montana, Wale and Raekwon. The track first premiered as Annie Mac’s “Hottest Record in the World” and the video showcases all three rappers going back to back over an arrangement of ominous beats and classical piano. “We Run” follows his explosive first release “Push It” featuring Pusha T that has already amassed over 15 million combined streams on Spotify alone and solidified him as a major player in the hip hop arena.

He’s also worked on hits from the likes of Usher, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Shakira, Lupe Fiasco, Emeli Sandé, Cheryl Cole, and many more, including the worldwide multi-platinum hit “Written In The Stars” by Tinnie Tempah featuring Eric Turner whose companion video has over 137 MILLION views on YouTube alone.

Centipede is a heavy hitting stoner metal trio from Helsinki, Finland. Formed in 2011, they have released two well received EP’s and a 7” split. Sarnath is the Centipede’s debut full length album that resumes from where the band left off with their previous Brazen Bull EP. 8 songs of heavy stoner metal brings together the different sides of Centipede: slow stomping and fast pummeling. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, part of the record forms a story of a doomed city that also gives its name to the album.

In addition to a digital release there will be a small batch of CDs and with the record release a two-song 12″ vinyl single that comes with a download code for the whole album. The album is released March 4th 2016 by Inverse Records.

The new Deftones record has been done since, at the very least, November, but it still didn’t have an official name. Well, it looks like that name leaked, along with the tracklisting for the new album. To read more, check out the Metal Injection article HERE!
