Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

POP Montreal

POP Montreal is very pleased to make a second line-up announcement in anticipation for the upcoming #SWEET16 edition of the festival. Highlights include experimental Argentinian songwriter Juana Molina, the avant-garde composer William Basinski, darling of the electro-pop underground John Maus, and one of the most devastating live performers on earth, Moor Mother, all of whom will also appear in conversation as part of the POP Symposium. Some of the newer acts not to be missed include Dirty Beaches frontman Alex Zhang Hungtai’s new project Love Theme, Polaris long lister and art pop warrior Lido Pimienta, as well Aba & Preach, the hilarious and phenomenal social commentators who have been keeping all of us Montrealers entertained and awake. Finally, hometown hero and LuckyMe recording artist Lunice will put on the party of the year and also partake in a special interactive beatmaking workshop that’s guaranteed to leave the audience inspired.

On the Art POP front, we’re thrilled to be collaborating with the Never Apart art space to present G.R.O.S.S., an all-female multimedia group show featuring artists Tricia Middleton, Nadine Faraj, Rebecca Storm and Jana Sterbak. The exhibit opens July 13th and will run throughout the festival, reveling in the guck, ooze, rot, leaks, and stray hairs and exploring the balance between revulsion and attraction.

Dead Girls Academy

Victory Records is proud to announce the signing of Los Angeles rock outfit DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY. Ring leader and frontman Michael Orlando sheds his skin for the first time since the demise of his former outfit, Vampires Everywhere, with the debut song and video “I’ll Find A Way.” Seen through the eyes of an irredeemable soul, the video provokes an underlying acknowledgment about the obligation of revenge and the division of ones self. This winter will see the inauguration of rock’s newest institution, DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY.

With its all-too-real violence and expose of human frailty, Orlando expands on the track, “When Ronnie (Radke, Falling In Reverse) and I sat down to write ‘I’ll Find A Way,’ we were pretty adamant on stating truths. We wanted lyrics that would hit home and tell this story about conquering your inner demons. The voices in your head are pushing one way, and your heart is pushing the other – riding the line between right and wrong. I’m hoping this story, this song will give hope. The cure to happiness is inside us and we must not give up without a fight.”

In 2016, when the curtains closed on his former band Vampires Everywhere, Orlando sought out other avenues for his new musical vision. “I’ve had this name on the tip of my tongue for a few years,” admits Orlando,” and I’ve always been on the darker side of things in rock & roll. This name fits the sound and overall image of DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY. Split personalities, fake friends, hangers-on, social-climbing and attention-hunting whores are all ingredients I wanted to exploit with this project. I called together Ronnie and our friend Elvis Baskette (Slash, Sevendust) and we started arranging songs and melodies. Living in Hollywood, there are so many fucked up things I’ve seen, the stories in my head, I could write six novels about them all. But that’s what breeds the creative juice and you will believe me once you hear DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY.”

DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY wasted no time and began 2017 by supporting The End Is Here Tour, featuring Falling In Reverse, Motionless In White and Issues. The band quickly caught the attention of Victory Records and was signed in mere days. With their kinetic energy and momentum in overdrive, DEAD GIRLS ACADEMY is ready to let the world know they are here.

A love story between two very different worlds. A young woman, skates the urban canyons of Hong Kong, as her mind drifts to someone out of her reach. Almost like a wicked, feverish dream.

With their brand new single “Wicked Fever” Angelo Mammone (vocals) and Christian Steenken (guitar) seamlessly cement the success of their breakthrough hit “All We Are.” “Wicked Fever” is a road trip through the ins and outs of JONAH’s imagination, the ups and downs of their hearts. A dreamy, cerebral drift, the song keeps us on the brink with an urgent sense that something extraordinary is about to happen. Delve into this visceral soundtrack, composed and brought to life in the remote and wildly romantic landscape of Fuerteventura.

“The song is like that moment before a summer storm,” says front man Angelo Mammone, “when the air is aquiver with anticipation.”

Smith and Thell

Swedish duo Maria Jane Smith and Victor Thell, also known as Smith & Thell, release a stunning video, shot in a castle in the suburbs of Stockholm, to visualize their newest bluegrass-inspired single “Toast”.

The video features Smith & Thell meeting various characters in different comprising scenarios, which all lead to a climactic and inspiring conclusion that holds true to the words of the single.

Smith & Thell talk on “Toast”,
“The song is really a reflection of both our personalities. There’s a lot of depth and sadness in us, but at the same time it’s easy for us to smile on, to celebrate life and be very childish. At some point we need to realize that in order to move on we have to forgive ourselves, others around us and destiny itself. Once you forgive, you can learn to celebrate the ups and the downs.”

It’s the sonic and visual equivalent of raising a glass. “Toast” is a wholesome exhortation to all aspects of life and quite personal to the two musicians. Despite the serious topics, the sound is driven by an abundance of hand-claps and cheery vocals.

NAV and Metro Boomin

Today, NAV and Metro Boomin formally announce their highly-anticipated project Perfect Timing with the release of two tracks, “Perfect Timing” and “Call Me”. The album is due for release July 21 via XO/Boominati Worldwide/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

The album was born out of the two artists mutual admiration for each other’s skills behind the mixing board, having previously worked on NAV’s viral hit “Up”, (featured on NAV’s self-titled debut mixtape). Perfect Timing includes tracks produced by NAV and Metro Boomin both collaboratively and separately. The project also bodes a handful of exciting surprise guests with additional details soon to be revealed.

In support of the album, NAV recently announced that he will join The Weeknd on the second leg of the Starboy: Legend of the Fall world tour. Set to begin on September 6, NAV will tour with The Weeknd with stops across Canada in Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver. Full list of Canadian dates and ticket information below.

Metro Boomin has quickly become one of music’s most influential and inventive 21st century producers. Metro recently unveiled his solo debut single “No Complaints” feat. Offset & Drake, the first single to be released under his newly formed label Boominati Worldwide where he will release his own music as well as additional future Boominati Worldwide signings. Next up, Metro hits the road in support of Bryson Tiller on the Set It Off Tour this August.

Amy Steele

Amy Steele is a 24-year-old singer/songwriter from London. For the last five years she has pursued music in tandem with studying for a degree in medicine. Having recently completed her degree, Dr. Steele has her sights firmly focused on her music, and with good reason; she’s bona fide.

Recently spending time writing and recording her debut EP, after releasing two previous singles to great ovation after signing with CTMG Records, Amy has already built a loyal following. Her first single ‘Bury You Deep’ saw her quickly amass over a million views on You Tube once the stunning young soulful singer handed out the stems to some keen dance producers to remix, including Catch 44 aka Ras Kwame of Capital Xtra who did a banging garage remix. Amy’s second single ‘The Wolves’ release exceeded the first and clocked up over two million listens and counting with features and plays across UKF and BBC Radio 1.

For the past year she has been in the studio working with Alex Wells (Rizzle Kicks), and various international producers to create a record that reflects her artistry and who she is musically. ‘Graces’ serves as the first single from her upcoming EP entitled ‘Memories in Watercolour’.

‘Memories in Watercolour’ is an 8-track reflective EP, with each track examining a different stage of a relationship. Each track on the EP is a different memory, or colour, that has been slightly degraded. ‘Graces’ is the memory of hopefulness in a new beginning. An exploration of the apprehension in being parted from someone, tempered with the wistfulness of hope. ‘Graces’ showcases Amy’s vocals as well as her strong ability to write lyrics which are in turn vulnerable, provocative and perfectly delivered in her unique and distinctive style.

Johny Tiger

From Miami, FL poorthing leaves us with her debut track “30 Bucks” manifested by the grunge beat architect Johnytiger from KNDL.XXX. This track leaves us feeling that 6am after club hangover from a good night in Miami.

Silver Wilson

Young three-piece Silver Wilson originally from Nottingham started life in 2016 and using fresh ideas they began making superb indie music with an original twist. Incorporating new technology with a mix of indie guitars, bass, and drums the band have organically built a loyal following for their summery danceable guitar-indie-pop. They’re constantly developing and taking new directions with their sound and style as they progress.

New single ‘I’ll Be There’ is a tropical electro infused indie track that’s vibed for summer relaxing and contemplation with a beach club vibe recalling perhaps Bombay Bicycle Club, Coasts and Circa Waves. It’s a sound that’ll find lovers spanning genres and styles from its bass loaded rhythmic backdrop through its crystal indie guitars and colourful sweeping synth sounds. It’s a gloriously big and sentimental ice cream scoop that is set to make them a band on the tip of everyone’s tongues.

John Sammers

John Sammers is the Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist who gave the world the 80s urban anthem The Cicada (That Ate Five Dock). His band OUTLINE released five singles and one album and were considered one of the best live bands of the legendary pub rock circuit that gave birth to the likes of AC/DC, Cold Chisel, INXS & Midnight Oil. When Outline folded John headed for London and for the next three decades regularly gigged all over the U.K. & Europe, becoming a sought after session player. In finding out what makes us all tick, he became a certified Master Practitioner of Hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming & Life Coaching. He also became a bachelor of Music Education.

Through all of this John never stopped writing songs and performing. “It’s in my DNA…”, he says, “…and it got to the point where I knew I had to make this album.”

BELIEVE then is no comeback album, for the truth is John Sammers never went away. BELIEVE is a statement of faith, a distillation of observations, insights & hard won truths. It is a glorious explosion of guitars, drums & vocals that rattle your heart. He combines the unmistakeable signature crunch of Aussie Pub Rock, the melodic genius of classic Brit Pop with a twist of Gram Parsons meets The Grateful Dead school of Americana.

Recorded in London, Sydney & upstate New York BELIEVE was engineered and co-produced by triple Grammy winning engineer Justin Guip (Levon Helm), John Sammers & Australian poet Terry McArthur, both of whom collaborated on some tracks. The album features some of NYCs finest musicians, including Jesse Murphy (John Schofield and Brazilian Girls) on bass, Grammy nominee Leslie Mendelson on harmony vocals and keys, AMA Lifetime Achievement Award Instrumentalist and Grammy winner Larry Campbell unmistakably on pedal steel and Justin Guip himself on drums (Hot Tuna).

In the words of Justin Guip, “I knew from the demos we had some really special songs but when it came time to recording John took his performance and guitar playing to a whole new level. I am really proud of what we achieved together here. This is one kick ass record.”

Arys Déjan

Arys Déjan provides us with “The ROUGH”, a smooth but unsubtle banger that satisfies listeners who crave fun, wit and lyrical content. Keeping it simple, Arys is pretty straight forward on this one, giving ode to the 90’s while still dumping the casket on those who can’t spit much to save their own lives. Enjoy being welcomed into the mind of Arys!

Song for Simeonidis 800x800

Coridor return with a lead single “Another” taken from their five-track EP “Song For Simeonidis” out now. This EP is a culmination of 6 months in the studio under the protective eye of Producer Paul Douglas. The influences of Bob Dylan, Beck and Jeff Buckley are heavily apparent. The prevailing mood of the “Another” is pensive and sombre with impressively high production values. The track is brash and unapologetic, with heavy guitars and drums mirroring a dynamic and hypnotic vocal.

The 4-piece all hail from London and their music combines genres of folk, blues, rock and indie. Previous releases shower the listener with the musical potential that has now been achieved with this release. The band have matured in their songwriting and composition, down to the consistency of constantly gigging, writing and recording, showing dividends and pushing boundaries. This EP shows courage and versatility in their music compositions without feeling encumbered or impeded by their new vision and experience. It is a rare thing to see an unsigned band mature in such a way without the constant involvement and steering of various A&R Managers, Producers and Sound Engineers. Lead vocalist David Poke honestly describes the first time in a recording studio:

“My first experience recording outside my bedroom. This is a studio down in Tunbridge in a farm. I’d never really seen the inside of a studio before. I remember this huge glass wall separating me from the desk, the producer and the rest of the band watching me and i couldn’t hear a anything it was so soundproofed. they’re all mouthing something to me and I’ve not a clue what they’re trying to tell me. Then he puts some headphones on and points at me, “oh ok I get it”. I put on a pair of phones hanging from the mic stand. I was really nervous. I’d never been in this position before, trying to lay my vocals down with everyone watching me. When that red light comes on you feel under complete scrutiny. It was so nerve wrecking.”

The EP is a melodic and wistful sound. As with the lead single, there is a stylish undertone with the production and the band do not stray far from their folk/indie roots. “Silly Sausage” (which is the best titled single of the year so far, surely?) is a light hearted, folk spirited track reminiscent of Cornershp. “Bewitch Me” has a slab of country influence amongst the Coldplay-esque string arrangement.

Funeralglade is a melodic death metal band from Turku, Finland, consisting of five young (from 16 to 18 year old) and passionate musicians. Funeralglade mixes influences from many different genres, such as Melodic Death Metal, Deathcore, Groove Metal and Black Metal. This combination provides the listener with mesmerizing lead guitars before plunging into a gruesome swirling havok of riff-insanity backed by intense vocal work and bludgeoning drums. The songs revolve around death in all of its forms, ranging from despair to power, from longing to hatred.

Since 2009 rolled melodic metal act Nicumo are about to release their second full length album. Album is titled “Storms Arise” and it will be out on 7.7.2017 through Inverse Records.

“Storms Arise” follows band’s well reviewed debut “The End of Silence” (2013, Inverse Records) and takes a step towards even more versatile scales of music and emotions. The album contains eleven tracks with unexpected rhythmic elements which will make your head banging, while the melancholic melodies forces you to rise your fist up in the air and cry. Versatile soundscapes mesmerize the listener and takes a hold until the last note. “Storms Arise” strengthens Nicumo’s position on northern metal scene, and gives it a timeless masterpiece to keep the scene alive.

“Storms Arise” was recorded and mixed at Joshua Music -studios during 2016 by Olli Tainio from Lucky Punk Productions, who has worked as an mixing, recording and an assistant engineer in various projects such as Callisto, SAKIA and his own band Blind Architect. Mastered by Svante Forsbäck (e.g. Amorphis, Volbeat, Apocalyptica, Rammstein). The cover arts designed by Hannu Karppinen.

USNEA: Share New Song “Lathe of Heaven;” Announce Full Album Details

Portland doom quartet USNEA have announced the full details of their third full-length album entitled Portals Into Futility. Inspired by dystopian science-fiction and the painful intersection of today’s crushing reality, Portals Into Futility is 5 songs and 56 minutes of expertly crafted and elegantly depressive doom/sludge.

USNEA Commented on the new song: ““Lathe of Heaven” was inspired the eponymous book by Ursula K Le Guin. It is a meditation on the blurred line between cognitive reality and delusion wherein the protagonist can change reality through dreaming. A well-intentioned psychologist attempts to corral that power but ends up creating more chaos and suffering. In the end, human arrogance and greed are shown to be the leading contributors to our own doom.”

Additionally, USNEA will tour throughout Europe dates this Fall as direct support for Ufomammut. The tour commences on September 30 in Paris and ends October 22 in Munich while hitting 19 different cities. The tour includes appearances at multiple festivals including Up In Smoke, Doornroosje Festival and Keep It Doom. The band will also perform an exclusive US set at Psycho Las Vegas on August 18.

Renowned Danish composer and classically trained multi-instrumentalist, MYRKUR, ascends with ‘Mareridt’s debut single today. “Måneblôt” is a tale which portrays a nightmare engaging a woman, girl, animal, violence, sun and fire worship and the pagan ritual, Blót” Bruun/MYRKUR explains.

Milan Music

The score to A Ghost Story, the new film from American director David Lowery, will be released on August 11th via Milan Music. Starring the 2017 Best Actor Oscar-Winner Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea) and Rooney Mara, the film explores themes of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence by following the story of a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost who has returned to his suburban home to try and reconnect with his bereft wife.

The score was composed by Lowrey’s frequent collaborator Daniel Hart. In his most ambitious work yet, Hart has crafted a score that is both astral in sound and cosmic in scope, making the overwhelming fear of eternity feel a little more manageable. “I Get Overwhelmed”, a track by Hart’s band Dark Rooms, is treated to a prolonged play in the film.

For the past five years, Hart has been composing music for film and TV. His feature film debut, ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’, garnered him critical praise, and Filmmaker Magazine named him one of 2013’s 25 Faces of Independent Film. Hart has scored a dozen feature films over the last four years, including Disney’s ‘Pete’s Dragon’ and the Natalie Portman-produced documentary ‘Eating Animals’. He also composed the music for Fox’s TV show The Exorcist.

Dark Continent

The material is alive! That is the basic feeling. Dark Continent in 2017 giggles and rubs and wastes with melodies on different levels, with the sight set forward. Easy and direct, at the same time complex and varied. Swallowing a song to keep up with the first dozen can not be done. The band’s third album “Songs About Love and Depression” holds a parade of details to contemplate. Guitars in masses. Songs to sound underneath for closer viewing.

In fact, many songs are many songs at once. The album offers a beautiful listening palette filled with different angles, angles and impressions. At the same time, a consistency is presented in both expression and sound that keeps the ten album tracks on track. Somebody felt bad and that was great!

Produced in the own studio The Vault in Malmö, Dark Continent succeeds in a blow to erase any doubt. Suddenly, in less than six months, the band spells out three singles, four videos, and now in May 2017 a full-length album. It is noted that the studio door barely has closed. As late as a few weeks away, half of the material was added to “songs about love and depression”. So fresh that the band has never ever been more smoking lately.

It is obvious that here it has been worked and digged in both soul and heart with the great creativity cap. The guitars nose you and never leave your side. They as well insist on getting under the skin, towards the heart. With the punsch and butterfly dance side by side and every second, Dark Continent guides both listeners and themselves in a partially new direction. As often as sweaty as well as more nuanced, perhaps pure ripe.

The title then? What does it say? “Songs About Love and Depression” – is it really what the world needs the already shaky year 2017? “All songs were written during a concentrated period, autumn 2016, when I did not feel particularly good,” the singer Ola Mohlin explained in an interview. Everything got too much with sleep trouble, formulated in “Sleep Tonight” as a result. Mohlin took a grip he is familiar with since many backs: let songwriting be your own therapy.

Today, Re-TROS premiere “frenzied” new song “Red Rum Aviv,” a “manic, colorful rush [of] over five minutes” (Consequence of Sound). The single is taken from their sophomore album ‘Before The Applause,’ slated for September 15th via Modern Sky USA. “There’s layered waves of rolling percussion, sizzling and driving guitars, and elastic vocals that seem to stretch in all directions” hailed Consequence of Sound about the track that was inspired by the Stanford Prison Experiment.

With lyrics such as “Cut their bleeding heads / Cut them with no mercy” this song is without a doubt one of the darkest on the band’s upcoming opus – along with the “spooky, baritone” (Loud & Quiet) Kid-Kongo-or-Nick-Cave-reminiscent “Pigs In The River,” which premiered earlier this week. The latter was inspired by the mystery of 16,000 dead pigs found washed up on the banks of Shanghai’s Huangpu river.

A limited 10″ edition featuring “Red Rum Aviv” and “At Mosp Here” will be available for purchase on the band’s upcoming tour, which kicks off July 16th in Chicago, IL.

Hayden Calnin

Having proven himself as one of the greatest new voices coming out of Australia at the moment, thanks to his ‘Waves’ single from earlier in the year, Hayden Calnin has returned to deliver another cut from his forthcoming EP, ‘Dirt’.

Much like ‘Waves’, ‘Collision’ follows the singer-songwriter’s simple formula of a rich and soulful voice over a bed of harmonious guitar playing and a bold atmosphere. With a bellowing voice to introduce the track, Calnin looks to create a lullaby-like serenade that uses minimal production in order to keep you focused firmly on his lyrics and performance throughout.

Speaking about the new single, Hayden Calnin said, “’Collision’ is maybe one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write. I wrote it in secret, not really showing anyone until I was comfortable with how it was sounding. It was never meant to be a song with all the hooks and all the standard rules in song structure that you’re meant to follow. I avoided that and just let it come out naturally. ‘Collision’ is an expression about a really dark time for a friend of mine. And, like my previous single, ’Waves’, following that exploration of mental health in young adults.”

Wolf Alice

Today, London-based rock band, Wolf Alice release their new single “Don’t Delete The Kisses” off of their upcoming sophomore album entitled Visions Of A Life. Zane Lowe also featured the track as his World Record pick today. The album, which is set for release September 29th, 2017 via Dirty Hit/RCA Records is available for pre-order now. “Don’t Delete The Kisses” and previously released track “Yuk Foo” will be available as instant-grat upon album pre-order. “Don’t Delete The Kisses” is available now at all digital retail providers.

Shattered Sun

With a week away from the release of The Evolution Of Anger, their second album for Victory Records, modern metal trailblazers SHATTERED SUN have unveiled the video ‘Hollow Chains.’ Perfectly outlining the demise of cultural and social consciousness, the video also exhibits the ferociousness SHATTERED SUN are known to deliver on stage.

“Everyone hides behind a keyboard nowadays, and ‘Hollow Chains’ is a call for individuals to take back their identity,” prompts SHATTERED SUN vocalist Marcos Leal. “Everyone seems to take their arguments to the digital front and fight unnecessary battles between each other every day. All of a sudden any particular event takes away our identities as human beings and replaces it with a close-minded, cold-hearted dismissal of another person that disagrees. It’s fueling the divide by turning us on each other. Take away unity and replace it with the ‘every man for himself’ attitude, and it creates a hollow chain around us all.”

SHATTERED SUN will channel their fury to the stages beginning with a hometown album release show on July 20 with label-mates DARKNESS DIVIDED, and then joining the 2017 Vans Warped Tour on July 26 outside of St. Louis, MO, and rounding out the tour on its final date in Pomona, CA on August 6. Additional dates supporting The Evolution Of Anger will be announced soon.

Panda Cult

Panda Cult are a new band fresh out of Merseyside bringing cool, indie-pop vibes to the UK with ‘Blue Angel’ their second release.

The perfect summer tune with hints of Metronomy and epic 80s bands like Tears for Fears, Hue & Cry and Go West. Despite having been officially formed in March they’ve already garnered immediate buzz across Liverpool and the North West having played Sound City, they plan to follow the footsteps of their friends in Paris Youth Foundation in the whole re-bourgeoning of the Liverpool indie scene.

Panda Cult are four friends who create music purely out of love and passion for music. Their live set is energetic, searing and tight. They’ve also recently caught the eye of their local BBC Introducing, where they were invited in for an interview after being heavily featured on the show. New on the scene, the band are yet to travel the country with their music but vow to do so soon. Meantime those in Liverpool or passing through would be smart to catch them at the Hope and Glory Festival in Liverpool on the 6th August.
