Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

The Joy Formidable

Welsh trio The Joy Formidable are pleased to announce the release of their Silent Treatment EP on all digital outlets tomorrow. The Silent Treatment EP includes 4 tracks, including a new mix of the title track done by William Orbit (Blur, Madonna, Pink), a live version of “Tendons” recorded at London’s Roundhouse, and previously unreleased song “All This Promise” from the sessions that produced the band’s most recent album, Wolf’s Law. For full track listing, please see below.

The band have also released a music video for the EP’s title track, directed by the duo ArchEnemies. The video for “Silent Treatment,” shot in black and white, features a confident yet vulnerable performance by lead-singer Ritzy Bryan. Watch the video over at now:

Many critics noted that “Silent Treatment,” a centerpiece on the band’s acclaimed sophomore album Wolf’s Law, was a different direction for the band. Pitchfork noted, “Most Joy Formidable songs start at heart-pumping and turn up the volume from there, but on the delicate “Silent Treatment”, Bryan is able to convey that same intensity backed only with an acoustic guitar.”

The band will be hitting the road for tour dates with Passion Pit, beginning on September 29 in Charlottesville, VA. The tour will span from coast to coast throughout the entirety of October and the first part of November, including dates in Los Angeles at The Greek Theater on October 25. Slim Auction featuring Frank & The Suicide Commandos and You Am I

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 15, 2013 - Pixies frontman Frank Black has joined forces with Minneapolis punk legends The Suicide Commandos to reinvent former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap’s “The King & Queen” for the next installment in the limited edition Songs for Slim 7-inch series, a non-profit project created to benefit Slim, who is still recovering from a massive stroke that he suffered last year. The auction-only release, which features Australian alt-rockers You Am I tackling Slim’s “Ain’t Exactly Good” on the flip side, is limited to 100 beautifully packaged, numbered, signed copies and features original Chris Mars artwork on the picture sleeve. The auction launches today, July 15 at 10 am PST via

The Commandos (who first crossed paths with Slim back in the mid-70s Minneapolis pre-punk scene) and Black turn Slim’s Stones-ey original into a frighteningly heavy monster of a song, topped off with an insanely maniacal vocal performance by Black that won’t soon be forgotten. “The King and Queen” was recorded in various New York and St. Paul studios, produced by Replacements/ Guns ‘n’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson and Steve Almaas (Commandos, Beat Rodeo) and mixed by Mitch Easter.

One of Australia’s best musical exports, alt-rockers You Am I, often called the Replacements of Australia, deliver a crunching, high-voltage reading of Slim’s magnificently acerbic “Ain’t Exactly Good.” The song is an uptempo delight that is brilliantly in tune with the spirit of the original, one of Slim’s finest compositions and performances. It was recorded in Melbourne and produced by the band.
Last month’s auction of the John Doe & Deer Tick/Vanessa Carlton/Scott Lucas single was another success, with almost $6000 raised for Slim and his family. Once again, heartfelt thanks to everyone for their continued support and all of the good vibes being directed to Slim and his family.
Planning continues on a CD compilation of all the various Songs For Slim 45 releases
(+ bonus tracks), including the two songs The Replacements did on their EP that kicked off this whole project. Release date will be later this year. Stay tuned for further details

Reminder: all Songs For Slim releases are now available digitally via iTunes and Amazon with the exception of the special Record Store Day release, which won’t be available digitally until July 23 due to the standard 90-day RSD exclusivity agreement.

Don’t forget about the Songs For Slim online store: for t-shirts, slip mats, bracelets and necklaces, with specially-priced bundles also available. Like all SFS projects, all proceeds go towards assisting Slim and his family.

True Widow

July 16, 2013, Philadelphia – True Widow’s forthcoming album, Circumambulation (July 23, Relapse Records), is now streaming in its entirety via Pitchfork Advance.

The album, which once again reunites the Dallas-based trio with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar), was described by NPR as “hyponotic,” with Alternative Press saying Circumambulation “is wrapped in spidery melody, reverb-haunted twang and plodding, almost processional rhythms.”

“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips when news of the release was announced in April. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat.”

True Widow will join Chelsea Wolfe for a full national tour this September (dates below). The band perform an Aug. 7 hometown show at Club Dada in Dallas and recently confirmed a spot on Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest this fall.

Pre-order packages for Circumambulation are available on CD/LP/Digital via the Relapse webstore: A free mp3 download of “Four Teeth” is being offered by Relapse as well (

Rise Against

In the last thirteen or so years Rise Against has put out six records, each one we are proud to put our name on. But we are just as proud of these 26 songs that slipped through the cracks and never ended up on any of our full lengths. In various ways, most of these songs saw the light of day at some point, but we thought we would spare you the digging and put them all on one record.

EL-P and Killer Mike

Run The Jewels is El-P and Killer Mike, and the 3rd member is arguably Mr. Killums, the deviant rodent-star of El-P’s last 2 videos who’s kidnapped in the clip below. It’s equal parts Charles Bronson in “Deathwish” and LL Cool J circa “I’m Bad” as El and Mike brutally (and questionably) fight to rescue their furry, demented companion. Andrew WK, Amber Tamblyn and more partake in this heartwarming tale of friendship, family values and redemption.

Grab Run The Jewels’ debut album on Fool’s Gold as a free download (and deluxe physical version) and catch all 3 of them on the road this summer.

The Last Sun

“Oooo you better knock me down”
The Last Sun is the musical incarnation of Montreal musician Dave Nugent, who until now has been best known for his role as lead guitarist in the Sam Roberts Band. A songwriter in his own right since the age of 17, he’s been honing his skills as a songwriter in various bands and behind the scenes. Making use of some recent down time, Dave teamed up with lifelong friend Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker The Star) at his Pembroke, ON recording studio, French Kiss, to lay down the four tracks that comprise The Last Sun EP in five days. Jordon’s renowned skills as a producer, mixer, drummer, and overall sonic craftsman brought Nuge’s ideas and demoes to intense, glorious life.

“There are some places that we must get to. There are some spaces that I can lead you…”
(On working with Jordon) “Jordan showed me how to construct a song, and go with my first instincts. There was never much thinking after an idea was put down, just keep moving forward until your mind was spent, and the song felt complete. Jordan doesn’t push you, he lets all your ideas come out and picks the ones that work for the tune.”

“In good times and bad decisions, I make mistakes with sharp precision”
Lyrically touching on subjects of relationship battles, questionable choices, regrets and vindications, the four songs making up The Last Sun display amongst them a vast range and depth of emotion and tone. Musically, there was no attempt to adhere to a single theme, but pop, rock and roll, folk, shoegazer, and electronic elements are woven throughout.

Sick Puppies

July 16, 2013 – New York, NY – Capitol Records / Drilldown recording artists Sick Puppies, whose brand-new album, Connect, is filled with “Solid radio-ready hits” and “top notch writing and musicianship” as praised by, have a busy July 16 as the trio kick off their tour (The Connect Tour ), with in-store appearances and celebrating the release of their ambitious third album, Connect, all on the same day.

The CD’s first single, “There’s No Going Back,” is already Top 10 on the rock charts, while the tune’s visually arresting video, directed by P.R Brown (Jack White, Marilyn Manson, John Mayer), has logged nearly a half-million views on and is all over MTV, MTV2, MTVU, Fuse, Teen Nick, Music Choice and Palladia. The soaring and memorable mid-tempo ballad is described by bassist/backing vocalist Emma Anzai as “slightly nostalgic and a little melancholy, but it’s also uplifting. It’s a cool contrast.” (The “There’s No Going Back” video can be seen here:

The 12-song effort, produced by Rock Mafia, is the anticipated and fully-realized follow up to the band’s 2009 sophomore smash LP, Tri-Polar. That record sold nearly a half-million units and two million single downloads and contains the #1 Rock track “You’re Going Down,” the Top Ten Modern Rock/Active Rock hit “Odd One” and the cross-format anthemic smash, “Maybe.”

Co-founded by singer/guitarist Shim Moore and bassist Emma Anzai while in high school in Australia, Sick Puppies moved to Los Angeles and soon made the road their home, touring ceaselessly, earning tons of rabid fans and rave reviews at every stop, as the Vegas Freemont noted, “not only are Sick Puppies incredibly talented on their albums, they have an insanely awesome live show and the best fans out there.”

Those fans can get up close and personal starting July 16 as the Sick Puppies play full-electric sets on tour and also appear at selected in-store events where they’ll perform acoustically and sign copies of Connect. The band even enlisted their audience’s help in making Connect, asking for feedback as they worked on the music. “We literally talk to our fans face to face–we know a lot them,” remarks Moore. “We wish back in the day our favorite band would have asked us that!”
