Press Release Roundup: July 1st, 2013

posted July 1, 2013, 10:12 am by Brian Rutherford | Filed Under Music News, Press Release Roundup | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists like ourselves get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will compile a list of some of the most intriguing things to come across my virtual desk the week before.

The Vaccines

The Vaccines have released a new track in anticipation of their upcoming North American tour dates. “Melody Calling” was recorded in March at Eldorado Studios with producers John Hill (Rihanna, MIA, Santigold) and Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys); the band debuted “Melody Calling” on their recent U.K. Arena tour which included shows at London’s O2 Arena & Leeds Millennium Square. The track can be heard here:

The Vaccines made recent appearances at Governor’s Ball Festival and Bonnaroo and this past weekend the band returned to Glastonbury (links to their performance below). The Vaccines will return for a headline show in Philadelphia at Union Transfer on August 2 before they head to Lollapalooza. Later that month the band will join Mumford and Sons for 12 show across the U.S. After that they’ll play a handful of west coast headline dates before they join Phoenix for a handful of more U.S. dates (full list of date below).

The Mantles

San Francisco/Oakland’s The Mantles share their playful video for “Hello,” directed by Hannah Lew from Grass Widow. Watch the video over at BrooklynVegan.

About The Mantles:
San Francisco/Oakland’s The Mantles have been charting a unique path through the Bay Area’s storied garage/pop scene since 2007. The early shows were loose & loud Velvets/Nuggets-bashing, always with weirdly catchy songs & oddball chord changes. Their first singles saw them honing their sound, building towards their excellent 2009 self-titled debut album (on Siltbreeze) and follow-up EP on Mexican Summer. Loosely aligning with artists like White Fence and Ty Segall, The Mantles thoroughly modernize and personalize the folk-rock tradition.

Now on Long Enough To Leave,The Mantles still color outside the lines but dial a cleaner, more infectious sound. SF’s Kelley Stoltz (Sub Pop) recorded the new album with enough savvy to make it pop while keeping the performances idiosyncratic & affecting. Sharp ears may spot bits of early Love, New Zealand’s Flying Nun label and LA’s Paisley Underground, but The Mantles are very far from revivalists and have more song-writing and arranging skill at their disposal than many bands could hope to have.

Long Enough To Leave is both impressionistic and psychedelic – guitar melodies evoke lyrical themes in equal measure to the plaintive words of vocalist Michael Olivares, whose frank and poetic take on ordinary reality strips familiar themes of their clichés. The band plays with a musical synchronicity and clarity that enlivens tunes like album opener “Marbled Birds” and the rocking “Reason’s Run.”

“Hello” is a tough, garagey stomp that contrasts nicely with the contemplative “Long Enough To Leave” which follows it. “Raspberry Thighs,” originally released on a scarce French 7″ single, is reprised and re-recorded with dreamy clarity. “Bad Design” is a great take on a long-time live favorite, while “Brown Balloon” joins “Don’t Lie” and “Lily Never Married” in a long line of Mantles garage-pop classics.

By foregoing the theater of retro psychedelia, The Mantles end up innovating in an area of guitar music where many bands get lost fawning over fashions, styles and trends. Long Enough To Leave instead stakes their claim as writers and players of distinction, building a sturdy catalog of excellent songs and increasingly accomplished records. The Mantles kick off their East Coast tour this week, with support from Juan Wauters of The Beets.

The band performed a Daytrotter session that was posted last month. Also, view live videos for “Tokyo Drift” as well as “Never Have I Ever Walked Away When The Time Was Right.”

In the Fall of 2011, Michelle Zauner and Kevin O’Halloran (previously of Post Post) joined forces with Ian Dykstra (Titus Andronicus) and Deven Craige (Strand of Oaks) to form Little Big League. Shortly thereafter the band recorded their debut 7″. Released in April of 2012, the two songs offered a glimpse into the band’s promising future, which after months of writing and playing live took solid form in their debut LP These Are Good People.

The band’s debt to 90s indie guitar rock is respectfully paid while Zauner’s gorgeously unique vocal stylings and striking lyrical imagery add to the album’s dark atmosphere. There is a level of tension and impending danger built, both lyrically and musically, that revels in the vulnerability of us all. These Are Good People is an album about coming of age, loss, and the overwhelming acceptance of reality over a failed romanticism. Due out this Summer on Tiny Engines, the album is a stunning indie rock debut from the Philadelphia quartet.

The band will be embarking on a short July tour. Dates are listed below. The band is also confirmed for FEST 12 in Gainesville, FL.

Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands

The Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival’s 2013 Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands is now underway. The touring rock music and lifestyle festival’s annual competition runs from July 1 through September 1 (deadlines vary by tour market). Bands can enter the competition–and fans can vote for their favorite band–at

Unsigned bands can enter to win a chance to play live on the Zippo Encore Festival Stage powered by Ernie Ball at UPROAR in their market this August and September. Finalists will compete for the grand prize, which includes a coveted spot on the 2014 Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival, the opportunity to record an EP with legendary producer Jay Baumgardner at NRG Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA, a record deal, $10,000 worth of music gear, national radio exposure on hardDriveRadio, and other prizes.

The judges for the 2013 Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands include: Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Duff McKagan (Walking Papers/founding member of Guns N’ Roses & Velvet Revolver), legendary producer/mixer Jay Baumgardner, and music industry jack-of-all-trades Jesse Cannon (author of Get More Fans: A DIY Guide To The New Music Business).

Duff McKagan gives his thoughts on the UPROAR Battle Of The Bands, commenting,

“For new bands willing to work hard, this is a great opportunity to gain new fans and expose yourself to a national audience. I’m looking forward to checking out these up-and-coming bands and helping to discover new talent.”

Judge Jesse Cannon gives his thoughts on the Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival’s Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands opportunity:

“Joining the UPROAR Battle of the Bands is a chance to bond with your fans and can be an exciting way to enlist your fans and then give them incentives and rewards for helping you get exposure. Battles Of The Bands have been the platform for many of music’s biggest acts to get some early exposure. Both music business players and fans who tell others what to listen to search them out to find the talent they should be exposing the rest of the world to.”

The fourth annual Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival runs from August 9 through September 15, 2013 and will include a stellar lineup of multiplatinum superstars and breaking talent, featuring Alice In Chains, also with Jane’s Addiction. These seminal alternative rock bands will be joined by Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive on the Rockstar Energy Main Stage. The Zippo Encore Festival Stage powered by Ernie Ball will host performances from Walking Papers (with Duff McKagan), Middle Class Rut, New Politics, Danko Jones, as well as 2012 Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands winner Chuck Shaffer Picture Show and the local Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands winner in each market. The COLDCOCK Herbal Whiskey Showcase Stage powered by Ernie Ball will feature performances from breaking talent including The Dead Daisies, Beware Of Darkness, Charming Liars and more bands to be announced soon.

2012 Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands winner Chuck Shaffer Picture Show will perform on the entire Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival. The Richmond, Virginia band recorded their new EP Temporary Fix (released June 25 on iTunes) with legendary rock producer Jay Baumgardner at NRG Studios in North Hollywood as part of their grand prize package. “Winning this contest was literally a dream come true and also pushed us to work harder than we ever had before,” says CSPS lead singer Ryan Johnson. “It’s been nothing short of a whirlwind since 2013! We flew out to LA in January, rehearsed for a week (10 hour days!), and spent a solid month cranking out six tunes under Jay’s [Baumgardner] guidance. He really helped develop our sound and get the best out of us in the studio. While in LA, we went to NAMM and hung with the Ernie Ball crew. This contest allowed us to grow a really great relationship with them and is such a great platform to help develop artists to get sonically (and mentally) ready for going full time. Whoever the 2013 winner is, buckle up, it’s a wild ride!”

Fans can also register at to become an official contest judge.

The top 100 Buzz Rated bands in each participating tour market will be judged by a panel of industry professionals and UPROAR artists. This panel will choose the winner for each local U.S. tour market. Winners for each local market will be announced two weeks before that tour date. The winner in each city will perform in the opening slot on the Zippo Encore Festival Stage powered by Ernie Ball at the 2013 Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival. Each tour market’s winning band will be eligible to compete for the grand prize. One band will be chosen by the panel of judges to win the Grand Prize package from the Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival and Ernie Ball Music Man.

    Cherry Poppin’ Daddies

The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies are excited to unveil the music video for “The Babooch”, the latest single from their forthcoming album White Teeth, Black Thoughts, out July 16th on Space Age Bachelor Pad Records. Fans can pre-order the album now on to receive limited autographed copies of the record and other deals. The band hit the road this summer with tour dates on both coasts. Upcoming tour dates below.

The music video for “The Babooch” plays into some of the greater themes found in the song and the soon to be released album, which examines, among other things, the withering affects of the Great Recession and capitalistic excess upon our society. Visually it might be described as a mash up of The Great Gatsby, an over the top Ralph Lauren commercial, and a Media Matters highlight reel. “We’re inspired by the music of the past a lot, but we try to write lyrics about serious issues,” band leader Steve Perry tells USA Today. “We’re trying to be a modern band and this record is very much about the years 2008 to the present.”

Cherry Poppin’ Daddies – The Babooch [Official Video]
White Teeth, Black Thoughts marks Cherry Poppin’ Daddies first jazz and swing-powered outing in more than a decade. After touring hard behind 2009’s Skaboy JFK: The Skankin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, the band – including founding members Dan Schmid (bass) and Dana Heitman (trumpet) as well as the full touring compliment – convened at Eugene’s Gung Ho Studios and set to work. The always-prolific Perry had something big in mind, a double album of songs penned as the housing market crash wreaked havoc upon the heartland, held together by swing’s timeless beat. White Teeth, Black Thoughts dares to apply the form in an effort to scrutinize contemporary culture.

A deluxe edition of White Teeth, Black Thoughts includes a bonus disk of material just as jubilant as the first, and features guest appearances from legendary musicians Buckwheat Zydeco and Zoot Horn Rollo (Captain Beefheart).
