Press Release Roundup: June 10, 2013

posted June 10, 2013, 8:14 am by Brian Rutherford | Filed Under Music News, Press Release Roundup | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists like myself get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will compile a list of some of the most intriguing things to come across my virtual desk the week before.

(i am) isis

Award-winning spoken soul band (i am) isis has just released the first music video, Get Free, from their forthcoming debut EP, UNTITLED. Watch the video online at

“Get Free” is a fresh anthemic single off of their EP, which is schedule for release on June 25.

The do-it-yourself visuals for “Get Free” were shot at Staten Island’s Fenix Studios and feature muted tones and social justice images to support the song’s grassroots message of change.

“(i am) isis compels your soul to open up and receive [their] message of freedom, while hitting you with funky, pop-rock-R&B rhythms,” said Datwon Thomas, executive editor of VIBE Magazine. “[Their] mesh of style and sound overwhelms and embraces at the same time. isis is sure to save some sinners with her level of talent.”

The inspirational track is currently featured in Supercuts’ “Rock The Cut” Artist Ambassador program, demonstrating (i am) isis’ acute ability to gain rising commercial appeal as indie artists. The band’s sound has been deemed “timeless” with a “fresh” take on rock and soul music by industry insiders.

Scott Lucas (Local H) & the Married Men

Chicago – Scott Lucas & the Married Men will tour with Mississippi Y’allternative/Sludge Pop band The Weeks this summer. Dates together begin on July 24th in Louisville, KY at Zanzabar. They play Santos Party House in New York on August 7th.

The Married Men will be on the road in support of their new record — The Cruel Summer EP — out June 25th via The End Records. They will celebrate its release with a hometown show at the Hideout in Chicago on June 27th, with Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) opening.

Lucas has toured with The Weeks before — they opened for Local H (Lucas’ other band) two years ago. “Sometimes you tour with a band and you stay in touch,” Lucas explains. “Sometimes you don’t. The Weeks guys have always been super cool — and they always come out when I’m in Nashville. I’m psyched to be going back out with them.”

The Cruel Summer EP was inspired by the Married Men’s experience playing the title track as part of the A.V. Club’s Undercover Summer Break series last summer. The band was asked to choose a classic summer song to cover and decided to reinterpret the sweet pop of Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” as melancholy metal. They performed it live at Novelty Golf on Chicago’s northwest side. You can watch their original take on it here:,83709/. The track was re-recorded this past winter at Million Yen Studios with producer Andy Gerber for the EP.

“When they asked us to choose a summer song – I was like, Bananarama. Absolutely. No question,” Lucas recounts. “Maybe it’s because I love Elisabeth Shue. I don’t know.”

“Cruel Summer” will be on side A of the 7″ record. The new song “Never Better,” a master class in dynamics that sees Lucas wearing his heart on his sleeve again, will be the B-side. A cover of the story song “Coward of the County” (best known as a Kenny Rogers song) and stripped down, violin and acoustic guitar versions of two Married Men songs from their most recent full-length album, Blood Half Moon, round out the digital version of the EP: “Heavy Lidded (Acoustic) Love” and “There You Are (Again).” The entire five-song EP will be available at all the usual download and streaming sites. Fans who purchase the limited-edition 7″ vinyl record will get a code to download all the songs, too.

“The covers are fun and all – but what we’re really excited about is the new track,” Lucas says. “I wasn’t prepared to like it this much.”

“The format is cool because it can be both an EP AND a seven inch single,” he explains. “So, the EP is like a supplement to Blood Half Moon, but the single can stand on it’s own, apart from the record.”

Lucas is best known as the singer/guitarist for two-man, Chicago rock band Local H. For his solo records, he plays with a collective of musicians — the Married Men — which sometimes numbers as many as seven and includes violin, organ and accordion. Reviewers have compared the band to American Music Club, Wilco, the Waterboys and Nick Cave. Lucas calls the group’s evolving sound “country-ish, alt-rock for people who like metal.” Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune listed Blood Half Moon in the top 10 indie releases of 2012. The band toured with Deer Tick last summer and has played shows with James Iha, Kelly Hogan, Tristen, the Airborne Toxic Event and others in the past year.

Tedeschi Trucks Band

Debut Album from Citizen, Youth, Out Today on Run For Cover and announce Instagram Contest with Hot Topic & Run For Cover, Warped Tour Kicks off June 15th

Michigan’s Citizen released their debut full-length Youth today on Run For Cover Records. The band has also unveiled a new music video directed by Rob Soucy for the album’s first single “The Summer” which has been cleared for reposting.

Citizen will spend the entire summer touring North America on Vans’ Warped Tour, which kicks off this week on June 15th in Seattle (all tour dates below). The band, Run For Cover Records and Hot Topic have all teamed up to offer an Instagram contest for those who purchase a CD of Youth via Hot Topic with the main prize a $100 gift certificate to Run For Cover’s webstore. For more information on how to enter the contest see the inset below.

Since first meeting as midwestern high-schoolers in 2009, Citizen have emerged as one of the most promising young bands in the alternative rock underground today. The band signed to Run For Cover Records in early 2012, releasing their EP Young States that year as well as a split with labelmates Turnover. In February of 2013, Citizen entered Studio 4 with producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Circa Survive, Daylight) to record Youth, their debut full-length. From the first note of Youth, the fuzzy, guitar-driven rock songs bleed emotion straight through to the album’s end (full tracklisting below). Citizen have called on the ghosts of Brand New and early Nirvana, creating a sound that is familiar but immediately all its own.

Beach Day

Hollywood, Florida based trio Beach Day is set to release their debut album Trip Trap Attack via Kanine Records. In anticipation of the release, Nylon is running an exclusive album stream a week before street date. Nylon said, “you don’t have to listen closely to the laugh in the opening track’s opening seconds to know that this sun-washed, ’60s-inspired album is a good time.” Trip Trap Attack, was recorded in South Florida and mixed in Detroit by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes,The Dirtbombs), and is available now for pre-order at Kanine Records web store. Beach Day is on tour now with shows coming up in the Midwest, East Coast and Toronto’s NXNE Music Festival. Tickets are available now for the band’s NYC record release show which will take place on June 19 at Glasslands.

Hollywood, Florida is not your typical beach town. The buildings, diners, and of course the beach appear frozen in the 1950’s. Probably a result of the town’s population boom happening in that era, a current drive down the streets feels like your moving through an R. Crumb drawing. Things seem exaggerated and a bit odd. The now mature population seems a caricature of their former selves.

An embodiment of their surroundings and love of 60’s girl groups, Beach Day sounds as you might expect. Think of a female fronted Beach Boys, throw in some The Shangri-La’s, The Ventures, The Sonics, Phil Spector, The Ronettes, add in contemporaries Cults, Jacuzzi Boys, Dum Dum Girls and the Black Lips and you have a soundtrack for your perfect Beach Day.

Upcoming Beach Day Shows

About Look Alive:

The members of Look Alive have all played in different bands over the last 10+ years. Hell, some of them are even in multiple bands now — that’s kind of how it goes for musicians. They all share that one common thing: the itch to play music. So here they are, another band, another line-up and another chance to fulfill that itch.

In a creative world where everyone seems to have a new band or project, artists must bring something fresh to cut through the clutter. Look Alive does just that by delivering a melodic approach with an aggressive tempo, propped up with timely lyrics and growling vocals that are sure to make any music lover take notice. Coming together in August of 2012, the band was fairly new when an old hat on the Atlanta music scene, Travis Groo, heard the recent incarnation. He moved quickly and inked the guys to a deal with newly minted Autumn + Colour Records.

“It helped that I’d been friends with a few of the guys for many years, but the first time I saw them play live I felt something special. The pure energy brought me back to the memories of the good ol’ days when I was playing music, and I miss that. Since I’m super old now, I wanted to sign a band that made me feel young again.” ~Travis Groo’

The group is doing their part to help raise pop-punk from the grave with their energetic performances and straight-to-the-point lyrics. They are no strangers to hard work and sacrifice. From sleeping on floors, touring the states and eating Ramen noodles night after night — this life has given them a genuine approach to their music and song writing. Their previous work has set the stage for something great, and they welcome the future with a beer in hand. Sharing this experience with friends, fans and family will always be the motivating factor for keeping the band alive.

We’re Not From Detroit

Despite the name, Detroit’s favorite non-native sons are actually a duo from Providence, RI, composed of Jeff Toste (guitar/vocals) and Michael Lamantia Jr. (drums), aka Mikey Lams. Bringing the less is more approach to their combination of blues, folk, and “other” styles (with an emphasis on the “other”), Detroit Rebellion lit a fire in the blogosphere with their debut EP Fork In the Road, earning praise from, Louder Than War and Berkeley Place amongst others. The record garnered airplay on such notable stations as KXLU in Los Angeles and WMBR in Boston. The track “Dirty Boots” is being featured in the upcoming film Growing Up and Other Lies featuring Adam Brody and Wyatt Cenac.

On their sophomore EP, The Detroit Rebellion of ’67, the band relies simply on the formula that worked for their debut. Utilizing no tricks or gimmicks, the EP is a gritty, mold on the amps, stripped bare love letter to the blues.

In 2009, Toste began performing solo as Detroit Rebeillion, which he referred to as “a tribute to old school blues, folk and Americana.” Once Mikey Lams joined on drums, Toste found Detroit Rebellion “mutating into something else.” During the recording, Toste decided he wanted to add some texture to the songs, so he tried running a distortion pedal through his acoustic guitar, the same peddle he scored from Kurt Cobain twenty year ago.

The result of that “something else” and experimentation is continued on The Detroit Rebellion of ’67, four tracks of gritty riffs and uncompromising rockers, recalling greats of the past (John Lee Hooker) up to contemporary revivalists Jack White and The Black Keys.

Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta had this to say about the upcoming mini-tour:

“We’re extremely happy to finally hook up some GWAR/Hatebreed dates after years of trying to get our schedules to connect! We’ll have spent this entire summer rocking stages in Europe so it will be great to get back to the good ole USA, to get down & dirty in the clubs with our favorite mutants from Antarctica. These gigs are not to be missed!”

GWAR front-thing Oderus made a simpler comment. “GWAR and Hatebreed together is really gonna fuck some people up.”

EL-p/Killer Mike

Killer Mike and El-P pull back the curtain on their Run The Jewels album a little further this week with a release date (June 26th on Fool’s Gold), confirmed track-listing, and the third cut from the project, “36” Chain”. With a characteristically bruising El-P instrumental being run through by two of the most adept lyricists making rap in 2013, it only make sense they give you the dirty version after teasing the edited one earlier this week. One can only imagine what the rest will sound like (actually I don’t have to, I’ve heard it and it’s really, really good). The album will also be available as a deluxe vinyl edition, preorder link below.

Pre-order vinyl here:

1. Run The Jewels
2. Banana Clipper (feat. Big Boi)
3. 36″ Chain
5. Sea Legs

Black Joe Lewis

Black Joe Lewis are excited to announce details surrounding their brand new full-length LP, Electric Slave, to be released on August 27 on Vagrant Records. Most of the album was produced by GRAMMY award winner Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse) and recorded at Church House Studios in Austin, TX. Three of the new tracks (“Skulldiggin,” “Dar Es Salaam,” “My Blood Ain’t Runnin’ Right”) were recorded and produced by John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Okkervil River) at Elmwood Studios in Dallas.

Commenting about the new album’s title and thematic elements, Joe himself said “Electric Slave is what people are today with their faces buried in their iPhones and the only way to hold a conversation is through text. The next step is to plug it in to your damned head. Nothing is up front anymore and people are de socializing.”

Listen to one of the tracks on the album, “Skulldiggin,” now.

The band are also excited to unveil an upcoming North American tour supporting Electric Slave. The band will hit the road beginning in September, playing a number of shows along the east coast including a show at New York’s Terminal 5 on September 26 with Okkervil River and Pickwick. Pickwick will support on a number of dates. For complete itinerary, please see below.
