Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Blaze N Glory Fest

On a sweltering late May Saturday, thousands descended on San Bernadino’s San Miguel Ampitheatre to spark up and listen to an assortment of dope reggae and rap acts. Entry lines were long but no one cared. The simultaneous laid back beach/carnival and “get hyped” vibes continued throughout the 420 friendly day and night. Amid the sweating, I checked out Dilated Peoples, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds and Stephen Marley who threw in some songs from his father into the set. I also chatted with So Cal trio Radical Something about touring with Matisyahu and looking for love on reality TV. Connecting with Hirie who brought Hawaiian island flavor to the mainland and also covered TLC’s “Scrubs” during her set, I learned about her new album coming in August and chopped it up with Prof who I’d just seen crowd surf in a raft across thousands of people recently at Soundset. As the temps went down, I ended the fun night by venturing over to see Nasty Nas bring some classic Q-Boro to the West Side. “It ain’t hard to tell” everyone had a good time.

LA Soul Music Fest

Soul music lovers are marking their calendars for July 22-24, 2016, and Los Angeles’ first annual LA Soul Music Festival. Debuting live at the Autry Museum of American West nestled in the scenic Griffith Park (located at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027), Mark Douglas, along with business experts Ezell Kendrick, Jeffrey Weber and Airborne Tickets stand at the helm of this summer music festival circuit. Fri., Sat., and Sun., from 5:30 pm to 11 pm daily, this three-day festival experience will attract fans and tastemakers from all over Southern California.

Grammy, Soul Train, BET, NAACP Image, Billboard, ASCAP award-winners and nominees, international and newly discovered talent, are confirmed to entertain. Highlighted talents include Eric Benet, Angie Stone, Marsha Ambrosius, Lalah Hathaway Lyfe Jennings, Jazmine Sullivan, Joe (Joe Thomas), Melanie Fiona, Eric Roberson, Rahsaan Patterson, Goapele, Vivian Green, Loose Ends featuring Jane Eugene, Avery Sunshine and Conya Doss.

Representing a gathering of music enthusiasts who appreciate the many facets of live music, this event celebrates all things “Soul.” “Whether it’s vocals, instrumental soloists or a band, it doesn’t matter as long as each artist has the ability and talent to inspire and connect with an audience,” stated Los Angeles Soul Festival Head, Mark Douglas. By way of determination and a unique vision, Mark and his team’s goal was to bring a music festival to Los Angeles to present to the public in one of the city’s most distinctive locations. Mission accomplished for the festival underway, as The Autry is the ultimate, outdoor venue for live entertainment on sun-kissed days and twinkling, summer nights. Nestled on 2.5 acres of outdoor space, festival goers can soak up the breathtaking view while escaping into the sultry sounds of live music. There is also free parking available across the street at the LA Zoo.

Tastemakers can look forward not only to Los Angeles Soul Music Festival’s many talented musicians on stage but also enjoy the opportunity to indulge in their favorite libations of choice throughout the weekend. Coastal wineries, along with Budweiser, Budlight, Stella Artois, Shock Top and Golden Road Brewing are a sampling of the domestic, craft breweries and adult beverage partners onboard. Foodies too can rally in the fun of deciding which gourmet food truck will punch their palates with some Los Angeles favorites such as Not Your Mamas Kitchen and The Kobbler King.

Attendees will appreciate shorter waiting periods in line for food and beverages, by the festival using cutting edge, RFID technology that lets fans leave their tickets and wallets at home. By loading funds onto wristbands, guests can effortlessly pay vendors on site. These RFID wristbands will also connect Los Angeles Soul Music Festival goers to the artists on the bill, other like-minded fans through social media, contribute to shorter entrance lines and function as their ticket into the event, too.

Premium or General Admission level ticketless wristbands are now available for purchase for 1, 2 or 3 days HERE!

Those Who Beheld the End Cover640

Denominate is a progressive technical death metal band based in Oulu, Finland. Denominate draws influence from bands like Death and Carcass and blends it together with newer, more progressive and technical elements to create a progressive sound with a touch of old-school.

Denominate’s new album, “Those Who Beheld the End”, which is being released on August 5th 2016 through Inverse Records, is an album that further hones Denominate’s sound towards the progressive. “Those Who Beheld the End” has a more polished sound and experiments more with melody, while still keeping the heaviness of Denominates debut EP “Realms of Confusion” present.

Track list:

01. In A Chasm Of Stone
02. Degradation
03. Penumbra
04. The Demented Scholar of Abatos
05. Torments of Silence
06. Apeirophobia
07. Terrestrial Funeral

Danah and Wippy Lion

Let Me Go is the latest single from emerging singer/songwriter, DANAH. The track was produced by up and coming producer Wippy Lion (Len Pearce from Justice Crew).

After collaborating for the remix of Danah’s debut single ‘Side Effects’, these two talented individuals have once again come together to create a catchy pop track that will have you singing along after one listen!

Let Me Go is a song about trying to fight for love but it ending in heartbreak.
“Now’s the time to stand by my side, or say goodbye…It takes two to make things right.”
A relationship involves two people, so the message in this song is that unless we’re both in it together, ‘let me go’.

Eliot Sumner

Today, Eliot Sumner announced a run of headline shows in New York for Governor’s Ball, Boston, Los Angeles and more. These dates follow the release of Eliot’s debut album under her own name, Information, earlier this year. Last month, Eliot embarked on a run of west coast tour dates that included a stop at SXSW and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where Eliot performed “After Dark” and “Information.”

Eliot’s talents as a songwriter and instrumentalist gained praise upon the release of four new songs last year – “Dead Arms & Dead Legs”, “After Dark”, “Firewood” and “Species” – as well as the release of Information. Influences from Krautrock-inspired riffs to pulsing synth-pop rhythms paired with her signature alto are heard throughout the record. 2015 also marked Eliot’s first North American tour with On An On in August and September followed by a European tour in November.

Eliot Sumner Tour dates:

6/14 Tulsa, OK @ The Vanguard

6/16 Denver, CO @ Lost Lake

6/17 Colorado Springs, CO @ The Black Sheep

In 2014, following the release of her first EP, Eliot joined Lykke Li as support on her European tour dates. The backstage antics of Eliot and her band were captured in a three-part behind the scenes documentary featured on i-D, “On the Road with Eliot Sumner and Lykke Li”

Venus II

Venus II, the dream-team pairing of Jarrad Brown (Eagle & The Worm / Dorsal Fins) and Ryan Grieve (Canyons) from Melbourne, have released their debut single Inside Your Sun, an acid-soaked rave-up that takes cues from baggy-era Manchester and weaves it through string-tinged psychedelic-techno. The rush of Inside Your Sun vividly marries Brown’s innate talent for song craft with Grieve’s deft production flourishes. The track was mixed by Chris Colonna from Bumblebeez, who has worked on albums for The Vines, Alison Wonderland and Jaguar Ma. Inside Your Sun is also accompanied by a psychedelic new music video.

Inside Your Sun heralds Venus II as the birth of an entirely new journey for Brown and Grieve. “I think Jarrad is one of the truest artists I’ve worked or been involved with,” says Grieve. “If something’s feeling good then it doesn’t need to be questioned. We’re good like that.” For Brown the partnership marks an entire personal and creative transformation. “I feel like a different artist,” says Brown. “It’s a whole new world for me. It’s really exciting.”

Jarrad Brown had an epiphany. As writer and frontman of freewheeling eight-piece collective The Eagle & The Worm, Brown was accustomed to delivering smart pop song writing with lashings of ragged rock n roll. But when completing a new batch of demos, he found himself seeking a new landscape, synthesised energy and electronic sound in his head.
“I’m always attracted to the idea of breaking apart my music,” says Brown. “Finding the heart of it and peeling back layers to something more precious. But it’s difficult to be objective about the big picture, so I wanted a collaborator – someone with a mutual respect, but a different perspective.”

Working collaboratively, the unlikely pair chanced upon the eclectic sound Brown had been searching for – a widescreen exploration of cosmic dance music, from fresh a pop perspective. So pleased with the results were Brown and Grieve, they anointed the partnership with a new name – Venus II. “Ryan was able to break down what I was about and present these new ideas in the way in the way I wanted,” says Brown of the collaborative discovery.

Even The Dead Love A Parade

Even the Dead love a parade

EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE began life when friends, guitarist Braxton Henry and drummer Clint Litton decided they had wanted to get back to their original metal roots; a band with simple crushing riffs, huge drums, in your face vocals, a straight forward METAL band.

Braxton and Clint started sharing their ideas and riffs for the project with bassist Stevie Benton, better known as the bassist for international Rock band Drowning Pool, who almost immediately signed on, and the musical core was completed with the addition of second guitarist Matt “Mattador” Raffaele, four guys who had spent countless tours and years together on the road working/playing for Drowning Pool and were already a brotherhood.

Stevie states “I thought Matt would be a perfect fit for what we were trying to accomplish. He and I had discussed starting a heavy band in the past, so it was time to join forces and dominate the world.”

With the core of ETDLAP firmly in place the search for the missing piece began, agreeing they needed a frontman whose voice could match the fierce intensity of the music, whose lyrics would paint a macabre picture for the listener; like a “Grindhouse” horror flick that sticks with you, a lyrical boogeyman who is real, relevant and in the now.

After auditioning several potential frontmen to no avail, guitarist, Raffaele discovered Jordan Condrey. “After listening to his vocals and reading his lyrics which were dark as fuck, we had found our singer.”

Since completing the lineup, ETDLAP have nurtured a brotherhood which is very evident
in their unholy live show. Touring most of 2013 all over the US and Canada sharing the stage with such acts as Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, Asking Alexandria, Drowning Pool, Eye Empire, Sevendust, Nothingmore, Hellyeah and many other heavy hitters and in the genre. ETDLAP have proven their accomplishment of creating the music they set out to do from the beginning.

With a slew of new songs demoed and ready to be tracked EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE are poised to bringing the HEAVY back to fucking metal and testing God’s patience along the way with their lyrics and general irreverent bravado, guaranteed to make an impact on the heavy music scene for years to come.

Toronto-based quartet ROMES is set to headline a night at LA’s very own The Mint on June 16th in support of their debut EP entitled Believe, released via Five Seven Music.

Their debut four track EP Believe was produced by highly acclaimed Tony Hoffer, known best for his work with the likes of Phoenix, Beck, and Fitz and the Tantrums. In the EP, the band seamlessly blends their R&B and pop influences with dynamic 80’s style synth to craft an indie pop-rock powerhouse of a debut. The Guardian took note of the strength of their stunning entrance into music with noting, “The four tracks on their EP virtually knock you down with their brio and self-belief.”

Gringo Star

Nevado Music is thrilled to welcome Atlanta, GA psych-rockers Gringo Star to their expanding label roster. Gringo Star will release The Sides And In Between on August 26. The album is available to pre-order now digitally via iTunes. Pure Volume has premiered the video for the band¹s new single “Rotten” which is available now on all streaming services. Gringo Star’s Nick Furglueles told Pure Volume, “‘Rotten’ to me, is about not letting societal standards prevent you from doing or expressing how you want and not waiting till it’s too late to do what you love.” He adds, “It’s about an establishment designed to keep people in check, and dismantling that establishment.”

Gringo Star are insouciant explorers, tossing the paddles overboard and drifting on the currents of their lackadaisical curiosity across a rippling sonic ocean, out to the far edges of rock & roll. Shots pulsing from a vintage Leslie speaker, their guitars, keys and vocals create the psychoactive ingredients of their echo-slathered, doo-wop-indebted indie gems; psychedelic garage bangers, gritty R&B shuffles and spaghetti western weirdness. Taking cues from Santo & Johnny, The Stooges, Ritchie Valens, Marc Bolan, Percy Faith, Sam Cooke, the men working on the chain gang‹uh! ah!‹they¹re all here, their electric ghosts reaching across time, tapping Gringo Star on the shoulder like the crossroads devil to Robert Johnson, bestowing secrets, passing torches.

If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiueles’ roots, it all makes sense. ³Our grandad started out in radio in the ’40s and ’50s in Columbus, GA., Nick explains, “He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma‹all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out.” Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents’ record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. “Our favorite music comes from the ’50s,” Peter says, “and that music influenced all the ’60s bands we like.”

The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.

Virginia doom/heavy metal quartet VALKYRIE is set to kick off a week-long run of headlining US dates tonight in Columbus, OH! The band will be crushing cities across the Midwest and East Coast over the course of the next week, and will also be appearing at Psycho Las Vegas this August along many other Relapse labelmates. A full tour itinerary is available below.

The Halls

Introducing The Halls, Brisbane’s freshest musical enigma, and their debut single ‘Lemonade’ which premiered yesterday over at ToneDeaf. Having bid their time since the band’s inception with writing, sowing their live oats and recording, the experimental two piece are ready for their music to be brought into the limelight.

A band of contrasts, The Halls are difficult to pigeonhole. Described by one blogger as ‘shiver pop’, they flit from intricate and delicate, to sparse and epic, to grungy and trashy – sometimes within the same song.

‘Lemonade’ casts a playful yet critical eye upon Australian environmental issues and first world consumerism. Produced by Konstantin Kersting (The Belligerents, Kingswood) at Powderfinger expat Ian Haug’s Airlock Studios, the track’s dark, nostalgic pop drives relentlessly throughout, finally exploding into a searing yet hopeful reprise.
