Press Release Roundup: June 17, 2013

posted June 18, 2013, 8:55 am by GWHill | Filed Under Music News, Press Release Roundup | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists like myself get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will compile a list of some of the most intriguing things to come across my virtual desk the week before.

F. Stokes

The Song:

F.Stokes is a Chicago born and bred rapper and spoken word poet now based out of New York City. He tells his story with punctuating imagery and glass-like clarity as he looks at the world through the lens of his family’s shared experiences. Growing up as one of six children to a single mother in the South Side of Chicago, he shared his home with people who lived on the edge of violent death, poverty, and ghosts of abuse and addiction. He found solace in writing early on in childhood and soon began to express himself creatively through verse and spoken word poetry as he grew into adolescene and early adulthood. In 2009 he began touring in Europe in preparation for the release of his first album, 2010’s Death of a Handsome Bride. He quickly grew as a prolific artist, releasing the Baked Goods Mixtape in 2011 and Love Always in 2012.

F.Stokes has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Essence Festival, and the Metropolis Festival in Holland. He has also cultivated a particularly strong fan base in the UK, where he recorded an EP with the band Bastille, and in Paris, where has sold out multiple shows and has been featured onNova Radio. Stateside he has been featured in XXL Magazine, Source Online and HipHopDX, among others, and has toured with the likes of Ryan Leslie, Chall Tuna, Mac Lethal, Arrested Developed and Nas. 2013 will see the release of his new album Fearless Beauty, which features production by Paper Tiger of Minneapolis indie hip-hop collective DoomTree, his most personal and political record to date, and more tour dates in Europe, including the Independence Day Festival in France on July 4th.

Download the album from iTunes here:

From his godfather’s tale of migration from Arkansas to Chicago on “1954,” to the ubiquitous narrative of the Windy City pimp who idolizes Don Juan on “Carpe Diem,” F.Stokes makes sure that no character fades to the periphery of his Fearless Beauty panorama. With a musical backdrop painted by producers like Paper Tiger of the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree, each piece weaves together, simultaneously bringing both the details and broad brushstrokes of his exploration into focus.

Los Angeles – Palms, the Los Angeles-based band featuring members of ISIS and Deftones, are streaming their self-titled debut album (June 25 release via Ipecac) in its entirety via Spin.

Palms is available for pre-order both in its digital form, with pre-orders gaining immediate access to a download of “Tropics”, and in a variety of physical pre-order bundles that include limited edition vinyl, t-shirts and posters.

The band play their first live dates in July with a four-date west coast outing, followed by a performance with System of a Down at the Hollywood Bowl on July 29:

July 10 San Diego, CA Belly Up Tavern
July 11 Santa Ana CA The Observatory
July 12 Los Angeles, CA The Troubadour SOLD OUT
July 13 San Francisco, CA Slim’s
July 29 Los Angeles, CA Hollywood Bowl SOLD OUT

In case you forgot, Palms came together following the demise of ISIS, with Jeff Caxide (bass), Aaron Harris, (drums) and Clifford Meyer (keyboards/guitar) electing to continue playing music together. “After a little time Jeff, Cliff, and I decided that it was insane that we all still lived here in Los Angeles and weren’t playing together,” Harris says. “It just sort of happened naturally, probably because we have been playing together for so long, and things started to come together. But we didn’t want to be instrumental: We wanted vocals. We just weren’t exactly sure who that would be at first.” The band, knowing that Chino Moreno (Deftones) had been a fan of ISIS, thought he would be a great fit and he agreed. “A chance to work with the guys from ISIS sounded like a lot of fun,” Moreno says, “I’ve always been into the atmospheric sounds they had created with that project and felt my sense of melody would meld well with theirs.”

The Black Dahlia Murder

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER’s new album, “Everblack,” has debuted at #32 on the Billboard Top 200! The album also landed at #3 on the Billboard Current Hard Music Albums chart (behind Black Sabbath and Queens of the Stone Age). Additional chart debuts include #3 on the Billboard Hard Music Albums, #9 on the Billboard Independent Albums, and #30 on the Hits Albums Chart. Additionally, the album peaked at #15 on the iTunes album chart, and #2 on the iTunes Metal chart, second only to living legends Black Sabbath.

Internationally, “Everblack” posted debuts on the Canadians charts at #8 on the Soundscan Hard Music Chart, #30 on the Soundscan Top Albums chart, #43 on Soundscan digital chart, and boasted day of release chart peaks on iTunes at #20 on the overall albums chart, #4 on rock, and #2 on the metal chart. In the UK, the album debuted at #25 on the rock and metal albums chart, and #45 on the independent albums chart. In Germany, “Everblack” heralds the band’s first ever debut on the German Album Charts Top 100 at #91, as well as earning the band debuts on the German Media Markt Top 100 Album Charts at #59, and the Weekend trend charts for Media Control Top 100 at #58.

Trevor Strnad reacts to the success of the album: “We are thrilled that “Everblack” is being so well received by the fans and we thank them truly from the heart for picking the album up. It’s been an amazing ride so far and the new album is our proudest moment yet. THANKS!!”

The cover art for Everblack was painted by renowned artist Nick Keller with Weta Workshop (, whose recent projects include: The Hobbit, Avatar, Chronicles of Narnia, and more. Recording was completed at Audiohammer Studios (lead guitars and vocals), Rustbelt Studios (drums), and Regal Fecal (guitar and bass). Mixing was handled by Jason Suecof and Ryan Williams, mastering was completed by Alan Douches at West Westside. Trevor Strnad’s horror-inspired lyrics persist on Everblack, beginning with In Hell is Where She Waits for Me, a reference to the murder from which the band took for their moniker.

Fans can stream “Into the Everblack” and order the album now at and see the band live all summer as part of the Vans Warped Tour.

While the influences that helped shape Admirers’ debut LP Involuntary Memory can be felt from the opening pulse of album starter “Return,” (Nile Rodgers, Roxy Music, Italo Disco) the record subverts the traditional notion of “synth pop” at every turn. Veering seamlessly from the Nile Rodgers inspired funk of “Return,” to the synth-laden dreamscapes of M83, Admirers’ mastermind Mikey James shares the same sandbox with these diverse artists, but creates his own reality on every track. The secret may lie in the album’s title: Involuntary Memory is the culmination of the cinematic, literary, and musical influences flowing through James. A lifelong, pop culture junkie, James toured the world during his time in early aughts indie darlings Longwave, before founding his own projects, most notably Mikey Jukebox. While Admirers’ upbeat, dance aesthetic may be a departure from James’ previous output, it’s a reflection of all that has come before, and where the future lies. “I listen to everything really,” explains James. “And they all shape me. From Pete Seeger and Al Jolson to World Music to Autechre to Beatles and Stones to Stone Roses & Smiths.”

Produced, recorded, and mixed by James with help from legendary producer/engineer John Hampton (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Gin Blossoms) at the historic Memphis-based Ardent Studios, Involuntary Memory is a tribute to the slew of production techniques James gleaned from records all over the musical map. There are shades of glam, disco, Britpop, ’80s R&B, EDM, post-punk and lo-fi indie rock. Technical mastery aside, the through-line remains James’ whip-smart, pop songwriting chops and a quirky, ethereal romanticism that feels suited to a nighttime driving montage, or a dimly-lit, smoky after-hours club.

“The record was made entirely at night, between 11pm- 4am,” recalls James. “It was intentional, and simply what our schedule allowed. And, I will not lie, I didn’t hide from this knowing Bowie’s Station to Station was done all at night. And if I listen to it during the day, it seems weird. It doesn’t sit well with me. But put it on at 12:23am and it feels right.” Regardless of the setting or context, Involuntary Memory is one of the most immediately infectious records of the year.

Involuntary Memory is available July 23 via Ardent Music/Redeye Distribution.

For an EP, it was a long, arduous process that spanned 5 states and 6 studios, but we persevered and succeeded.” notes bassist and co-founder Chad Hanks. “This is our first major step back into the game, and the next step in serving up a full-length AHC record. The “heavy music scene” is even worse off than we left it 6 years ago. We’re looking to rectify that.”
Shoot can be pre-ordered from the American Head Charge website ( and fans can bundle the CD with an exclusive poster and t-shirt. All pre-orders will receive a code to digitally download the EP a week prior to its release.
Joining AHC on the “Shoot Tour”, on select dates, are fellow Minneapolis heavy rockers Blue Felix and “humorcore” kings Psychostick. “We’re all very excited to go out and tour the U.S. in support of our new EP.” continues Hanks. “It’s been a year since we’ve been on the road, and we’re more than ready to deliver the goods.
