AFROPUNK ANNOUNCES BROOKLYN FESTIVAL LINEUP FOR AUGUST 25TH AND 26TH

The world renowned festival, AFROPUNK, has announced the lineup for its critically weekend-long, annual celebration, AFROPUNK BROOKLYN to take place on August 25 & 26 at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene. The 2018 version of AFROPUNK Fest continues to display one of the most exciting and inclusive lineups in the world. Headlining the fest is Erykah Badu, Tyler, The Creator, Miguel and Janelle Monae. Other performers include The Internet, Twin Shadow, Ibeyi, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Lolawolf, Jaden Smith, Willow Smith, Trash Talk, The Fever 333, Denzel Curry, Smino, Jamila Woods, Jessie Reyes and many more (initial lineup below).

The festival that began in Brooklyn in 2005 has since expanded around the world – to Paris and Johannesburg, to London and Atlanta. Beyond the constellation of large-scale live-music events, AFROPUNK is a world-wide community that is the engine of the global black experience, creating space and value for the intersections, embracing the plurality of our stories and individualities across borders and continents. The AFROPUNK festivals are gathering places to experience art and fashion, food and local markets. AFROPUNK is where the global majority comes to see and be seen, to speak loudly and proudly, to resist and party – and, most of all, to make the future.

As has become custom of the now-global movement, AFROPUNK has created a theme for this year’s festivals: The People Resist, a message that brings together AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, in resistance to those that strive to oppress. This year through the work of the AFROPUNK Global Initiative, AFROPUNK has created a new ticketing program called BOGO (Buy One Give One). With each BOGO GA Ticket purchase, (1) additional ticket will be provided to a New York City area youth participating in diversion programs with arts organizations like Recess Art and Young New Yorkers that create pathways to art disciplines and access to mentorship from working artists as an alternative to incarceration.

Within that same breadth and in an effort to make sure that everyone who wants to be a part of the AFROPUNK experience can be, the festival will be bringing back it’s earned ticket program called AFROPUNK ARMY. The earned ticket social justice advocacy program gives fans the opportunity to join AFROPUNK’s volunteer corps for admittance to the festival. AFROPUNK works closely with nonprofit partners to provide volunteer activities and community givebacks in exchange for a ticket to the festival (a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer work will earn ONE General Admission ticket). Although the name Eva Lawitts may not immediately strike you on first blush, her fingerprints have been on some of the best rock music coming out of New York since she started playing and recording in high school. Recording with Vagabon, Citris and many more, touring the U.S. countless times and finding a home as an engineer at Wonderpark Studios, Lawitts has accrued a lifetime’s worth of experiences in just a quarter century.

Now, Lawitts is prepping her own release as Stimmerman, the Pleasant Vistas in a Somber Place EP, which she wrote, arranged and performed all of the Guitar, Bass and Vocals for.

“I spent 2015-2017 in a van bouncing from NYC to LA to Chicago to Richmond to Savannah to Texas to Kansas and back,” shares Lawitts. “These are 5 songs I wrote either staring out of the window of that van or in my home in Brooklyn, anticipating how soon I would be staring out of the window of that van.”

On the EP, Lawitts brings her dynamic prog-influenced stylings and powerful vocals as she weaves sprawling soundscapes with each new track. Lawitts is joined by Beach Fossils touring drummer Russell Holzman and NY Times hailed trumpeter Adam O’Farrill.

Artist, designer and musician Johny Dar has announced the release of his new single ‘Gigi’, as a precursor to his upcoming album and live show Dardelica, co-produced by Dan Vinci (Faithless, Basement Jaxx, Snoop Dogg, Flo Rida Big Narstie, Example, Skream, Jessie Ware) after releasing previous singles ‘Be Free’ and ‘Scars’ in 2017. Already well-known in fashion and design circles, Dar has collaborated with a slew of artists including Jessie J, Florence Welch, Harry Styles, Sir Elton John, Carla Bruni, Bryan Adams, Julio Iglesias, Tom Waits, Dannii Minogue, Marianne Faithfull, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C and Sam Smith, on a host of creative projects. He has recently turned his attention to music, and delivering a new sonic language that has been dubbed ‘alien-rap’ – an original, organic vocal expression merged with modern electronic production that delivers an audio experience like no other.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Johny Dar moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to study fashion, launching his first fashion label in 1999, and has been producing timeless collections ever since. In 2002 he took a hiatus from his thriving career to travel, study different cultures and traditions, and break away from the known. This developed his unique artistic style, which he sees as the fruit of his exploration and culmination of his experience, and which forms the heart of his work in every medium he engages. His passion for originality is evident in every aspect of his work, from paintings to light installations, prints, couture, illustration, sportswear and music. Dar has presented runway collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, and New York Fashion Week, and 2017 saw him devote his runway shows to the Jeans For Refugees initiative, showcasing hand-painted celebrity-donated denims alongside his couture collection, to international acclaim. He has been featured in publications including Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Le Monde, Die Zeit, New York Times, Harpers Bazaar, Fault, Hunger, Kaltblut, Aesthetica, Tatler, and Flair among others.

Johny Dar shies away from citing influences, prefering to keep his ears and mind free in order to create entirely original artistic expressions, therefore does not generally seek inspiration from other artists. However, Dardelica has been described as having similarities to Daft Punk, Moby, Chemical Brothers, Infected Mushroom, KLM and others.

‘Gigi’, the latest single by Johny Dar, is a kaleidoscopic journey through texture and sound, which weaves muscular percussion, boisterous beats and bold melodies with Dar’s popping, bubbling vocal instrumentation and captivating alien-rap. Post-punk industrial rockers …And We All Die announce the release of ‘Modern Day Privateers (Remixes)’, featuring 10 remixes of the band’s single ‘Modern Day Privateers’, a track that was originally released in 2016 on the band’s debut album ‘And We All Die’. Exclusively on Bandcamp, the band is also including three bonus remixes or ‘outtakes’.

This new release features contributions from Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail, Poptone), Assemblage 23, Rodney Anonymous (Dead Milkmen), Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra), Ego Likeness, Mindless Faith, The Gothsicles, The Rain Within, Gost, and Knifight.

Josh Bonati (Cult of Youth, Forus, Zola Jesus) mastered this full length, while Shawn Knight (Childbite, Superjoint Ritual) designed the artwork. The original tracks were recorded, engineered and produced by Jason Rufuss Sewell of One-Eyed Doll at Nebulost Ranch in Austin, Texas.

…And We All Die is a collective of musicians organized by Raymond Burton Estes. Based in San Antonio, Texas and formed in 2000 as a conduit for collaborating with a diverse group of friends and artists, the original idea was to fuse heavy music in the vein of the UK82 punk rock, hardcore, and industrial bands such as The Exploited, Integrity and Ministry with darker melodic post-punk music by the likes of The Cure, Joy Division and Sisters of Mercy. …And We All Die was also influenced by New Model Army and 108.

Estes and company continue to develop their sound by combining elements of punk, post-punk, hardcore, goth and industrial music into their sound. Incorporating rock and electronica into their sonic fabric, the band effectively creates post-punk songs with the intensity of hardcore and industrial music.

“This song is about any bogeyman or villain that we and society make up. Today, particularly, in Western societies significant portions of the populations have mistrust in public institutions and private corporations, so Modern Day Privateers may appeal to that sentiment. But really, this is not a protest song, it’s a song about bad guys doing bad things and the sense they’re untouchable and not going to stop,” says Raymond Burton Estes.

“We chose to celebrate this song with remixes by some of our favorite artists as it appeals to audiences across genres and means different things to each listener. Selfishly, we wanted a diverse set of remixers to interpret the song in their styles, as it inspires us to examine our sound and explore new approaches to song writing. As fans of electronic music and synthwave, in particular, this remix by Gost exemplifies the shared intensity and similarities between our post-punk and Gost’s synthwave sounds.”

‘Missing’ is the debut single by experimental artist Dervisis scheduled for self-release on 20th April. Initially releasing music under the moniker of Kid Flicks back and forth between his hometown of Athens and London from 2010-2017, Dervisis has now traded this in for his given name, seizing each moment and demanding the future. During his time as Kid Flicks, Dervisis performed at festivals such as Eurosonic (2017) in the Netherlands alongside Dua Lipa and Alma, Fengaros (2017) in Cyprus next to Fantastic Negrito, Bombino and Xylouris White, as well as Glimps (2015) in Belgium with Bill Ryder-Jones and Hiele. Dervisis has also had the privilege of sharing the stage with experimental artists such as Slow Magic, Craft Spells, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, as well as receiving substantial support from prolific publications such as CBC Arts, The 405, DIY Mag and Impose Magazine.

Utilizing an array of techniques and values, Nikolaos Dervisis has been dubbed a “musical chameleon”, introducing the use of darbuka pattern (an Arabic percussive instrument common among Balkan and Middle Eastern music) inspired beats amidst lush electronics and soulful vocals. He has remixed for producers such as Tendts and Liphemra (aka Phem), released two homemade LPs released by Greek label Inner Ear Records as well as a third and final self-titled album on Klik Records in 2016 respectively.

Born in Athens, Greece, Nikolaos Dervisis grew up on punk influences, playing his first gig at an anti-war anarchist festival before diving into the experimental musical realm. After performing together with a few bands in his early years, Dervisis soon realized where his true calling was. After receiving a BA in Graphic Design, he then started to experiment during back and forth travels between his hometown of Athens and London by building up an archive of unheard material, and soon after, earned himself a Master of Music degree at Goldsmith, University of London. Influenced by a multitude of different genres and emotions from the electronic throbs of Burial to the soulful stirs of Stevie Wonder, from the stylings of Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz, right down to the experimental quirks of Sun City Girls.

Characterizing himself as a ‘musical nomad’, Dervisis produces via a laptop, wherever he may feel comfortable – whether it’s inside a tiny venue, or even just a friend’s home. However, this is no restriction when it comes to producing music as Dervisis’ eclectic palette continues to grow further and further down the experimental rabbit hole, comparable to artists such as Nicolas Jaar, Grimes or Mica Levi, with his sample heavy, vocal processed, electronic-pop antics. Inspired by global pop culture and Eastern Mediterranean influences in a world where both can co-exist, Dervisis has embraced this notion further by pursuing his own brand of ‘Eastern Post-Pop’ music.

Dervisis’ ‘Missing’ is an explorative, albeit reflective post-pop delight, fully equipped with bleeping electronics, percussive beats, pulsing basslines and soulful processed vocal techniques. Evidently this comes from somewhere pure, honest and intuitive, although there’s certainly no reason to stand still while listening to it.

Speaking on the latest single “Missing”, Dervisis explains: “The idea behind “Missing” was to create a pop track describing a needy and dysfunctional relationship, as a metaphor for my relationship with Athens, the city I grew up in. The past decade, due to the crisis (+ decadence of the city, unemployment, shitty jobs, rise of the far right, gentrification, the absence of my friends.who left to work abroad etc.) I have developed a weird relationship with Athens and sometimes I prefer missing the city than living here.”

No Ice

“Let’s just say that NO ICE are a rock and roll band. That means they make music that sounds like the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. That means they write songs about finding love, losing love, drinking, and getting high. That means they’re standing on the shoulders of those who came before.” – CoolDad Music

Purely Brooklyn-born and raised blending sounds and styles from classic songwriters from power pop to soul, NO ICE wears its heart on its sleeve with a street-smart sensibility. Formed by Edward R. Murrow High School grads Jamie Frey (lead vox, guitar) and Jesse Katz (drums), the band came about during their days playing in the native NYC rock n’ roll, anti-gentrification punk rock flag bearing group The Brooklyn What. Frey began to write and play guitar more and after some time spent in the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen studio, the spark for what would eventually become the Come On Feel The NO ICE LP was ignited.

Now, NO ICE are getting ready to release the third single off the album, “We Get High Together,” with a multi-tiered music video shot in four parts and fused together to make one. Not unlike Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind, the video details a particular sort of intimacy as our protagonists watch TV with three unique short films shortened and spliced in. Those three short films were also fully realized and will be available separately from the music video release.

Joining Frey and Katz in NO ICE are Gwynn Galitzer (vox), Sean Spada (keys, vox), Jordan Smith (bass), Sam Braverman (guitar) and John-Severin Napolillo (guitar). Since forming, the band has gone on to become a favorite in the NYC scene sharing stages with Richard Lloyd (Television), Paul Collins Beat (The Nerves), The Men, Shilpa Ray, Jeffrey Lewis, Ian Saint Pe (The Black Lips), Mighty Fine (The Afghan Whigs) and many more.

It all started when Maris cold-entered a competition to sing on a popular Youtube series Postmodern Jukebox. After its founder Scott Bradlee heard Maris’ voice, he brought her in to sing a version of “Jolene” in May 2017, which would go on to earn over 1 million plays.

Still an unknown, Maris experienced her first true brush with internet fame only a few month later in July. While practicing for a local Montana gig, Maris jokingly grabbed a bottle of soy sauce and at the request of her mom recorded a playful cover of Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon”, using the bottle as a microphone. In the morning, the video had over 100K views, 60K shares, and the next day Kikkoman Soy Sauce asked Maris to write a song for their commercial. The viral fame was never something Maris was after, but the video settled at nearly 4M views on Twitter.

Later in the summer the producers for the return season of American Idol approached Maris for a chance to audition. Fast forward to November 20th, and Maris was in Los Angeles standing on the ABC stage next to Luke Bryan at the final round of auditions. It was the AMA’s season and Maris took a risk by performing Etta James’ standard “Fool That I Am” completely acapella. Maris did not make it, and can tell you now that it was the best thing that never happened, as she is gearing up to release her original EP LOVELUST.

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Theodore has announced another sterling single ‘Towards? (for what is to come)’ slated for release on 2nd March via United We Fly. The Greek performer has already garnered considerable success with his previous album It Is But Its Not which was co-produced by Clive Martin (Queen, Reef) mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, Moby, M83) and performed live at the fabled Studio 2 at Abbey Road Studios. With over 1.7 million Youtube views, he has received radioplay from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne and French station RadioKC, included as part of NPR Music’s The Austin 100 and has received support from publications such as FGUK, Gaffa, Tsugi and Szene. Theodore has graced the stages of Live at Heart Festival and Reeperbahn Festival -where he was named Best Performance Of 2017. He supported Sigur Ros and DIIV at Release Festival (Athens) in 2016, has just performed Eurosonic Noorderslag and looks forward to showcasing his talents at this year’s SXSW Festival.

Based in Athens, Theodore’s schooling in piano and traditional Greek folk music lead to a professional music career in London, where he studied Music Composition in 2011. Theodore has written music for theatrical pieces such as Matina Megla’s Window, Vladan Nikolic’s film Bourek, and was commissioned to write a new score for Buster Keaton’s classic silent comedy of 1928, The Cameraman. Theodore and his band then performed the score live to the film screening, in the unforgettable setting of the Temple of Zeus in Athens, which he describes as “one of the best moments of my life.” Theodore has gained notoriety for his memorable live performances, dazzling audiences with his mesmerizing stage presence.

Fusing classical composition with electronic elements to create beautiful, atmospheric and often cinematic songs, his sound is characterized by contrasting styles. Citing influences such as Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Doors, Chatzidakis, Vagelis Papathanasiou, Nils Frahm, The National, Olafur, Arcade Fire, Max Richter, his unique mélange of influences allow a broad scope of movement from ethereal, to melancholic, to classical, to post rock. ‘Towards? (for what is to come)’ is a sonic stream of consciousness, capturing every nuance of Theodore’s technical wizardry. Covering a wide sonic scope, he drowns ethereal melodies in a cauldron of psychedelic sounds.

Speaking of the single Theodore says “Towards? (for what is to come) is going to be the first song of my upcoming album. This is the initial question I will be exploring throughout the album. It is about the two different sides of one’s personality; the conscious and the magical one and inspired by the battle between them.”

The Sea Engulfs Us and the Light Goes Out

Following the release of their debut EP, As You Were, in the Spring of 2017, Brooklyn-based band Stay Inside continued to cut their teeth gigging while watching the landscape that is the current state of world affairs grow murkier and more cynical.

Comprised of four transplants, Bartees Cox, Jr. (guitar, vox) of Yukon, OK, Chris Johns (guitar, vox) of Hockessin, DE, Vishnu Anantha (drums) of Wayne, PA and Bryn Nieboer (bass, vox) of Los Angeles, CA, Stay Inside seeks to tell stories about fighting back and bringing more people into the fold of their impassioned scene. Or as Atwood Magazine described, “the band challenge norms through their embrace of deeper thought and feeling; through their defiance of ‘taboo’ topics and inherent drive to speak out in a climate that is so full of mistrust, anxiety, fear, and doubt.”

Having recently signed to Old Press Records, Stay Inside are ready to meet the frustrations of 2018 headlong with a new EP, The Sea Engulfs Us and the Light Goes Out, out February 23rd, 2018.

Recorded at the Cannon Found Soundation, the six-song EP explores their full range as they combine the raw post-hardcore aggression of At The Drive-In and Letlive with the emotional melodic instrumentation of post-rock bands like Mogwai. Led by singles “Fever And Jealousy” and “We Look On In Echoes,” the songs from the record address instances of racism, police brutality, misogyny, and other issues that reflect the lived experience of the band’s members.

In these increasingly uncertain times we all are living in, Stay Inside is here to embrace and engage with the marginalized, the depressed and anyone looking to challenge the rituals of conformity.

Nashville based rock ‘n roll artist Kim Logan has announced the release of her newest double sided single Pseudoscience: Chapter 3 featuring tracks Ladyboy and Hitch Your Wagon. The single is the third addition to her sophomore body of work entitled ‘Pseudoscience,’ which she has been releasing in installments since late 2016, collaborating with producers like Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton) and Brett Orrison (The Black Angels).

Hailing from a classical background, studying at Berklee College of Music, and spending a decade in the opera industry, her sound is unconventional, dark, and exploratory. Drawing from the many different genres of blues, roots, and soul music, Kim presents poetic yet unapologetic tracks.

Red Lama

The Danish seven-piece rock group known as Red Lama was formed in 2011 by a group of friends, but it was only in 2015 that the band found their last member and completed the current line-up, responsible for writing and recording the band’s 2016 debut LP ‘Dreams Are Free’.

On Red Lama’s second album ‘Motions’, the band maintains the same atmospheric, warm and rhythmically-based soundscape, still strongly rooted in classic rock music as heard on their first album. ‘Motions’ is a collection of songs that sound more mature in terms of songwriting, arrangements and production when compared to the debut. From their starting point in the rock n’ roll of the 60’s and 70’s, the band has now expanded their musical pallet by embracing influences of kraut rock, British trip hop and Talk Talk-ish art rock of the 80’s. A more disciplined as well as grandiose aesthetic reveals itself and contributes in a wondrous manner to those psychedelic and kaleidoscopic horizons already disclosed by the musical roots of the band and Red Lama thus utilizes the potential in the sonic mind travels of more recent decades. Hereby, a more modern rock sound appears and one that, while floating through the decades, relates itself to its present time and its own reality – where this reality might origin from and what it might become.

LAMB OF GOD has just announced four select one-off headline shows, set to take place during their upcoming North American tour supporting Slayer. Behemoth is confirmed as support on all LAMB OF GOD headline dates, which will take place in Pomona, CA, Sioux Falls, SD, Wallingford, CT and Raleigh, NC.

Timothy Dark

New York-based artist Timothy Dark has announced his forthcoming EP ‘Dark Day Afternoon’, which is slated for release on March 30. This five-track offering is preceded by the release’s lead single ‘She Put a Spell on Me’. The EP was co-produced by Robb Torres and Timothy Dark for Darkseed Entertainment at Quartier General Studios in Los Angeles.

This release follows Dark’s latest album ‘The Last Days of Dark’, which was produced by longtime collaborator Dan “The Band’ Policar (Sean Paul, Raekwon The Chef). Two of the tracks ‘Unpatriotic’ feat. Stephanie Linn
and ‘The Future’ really made some waves in the face of the realities of Trump’s America.

“Christmas is a hard time for me, as my parents are no longer with me and I don’t know how to celebrate it anymore. So decided I was going to take a trip to LA just to get away. I went into my catalog and picked ‘She Put a Spell on Me’, jumped on the plane, and recorded most of the song in two days. On the third day I knew it needed a female vocal,” explains Timothy Dark.

“My friend Angie Atkinson had just moved to LA, so I called her and asked her what she was doing. She was chillin’ in her PJs so I asked her to come through and sing on the track. She said if I paid her Uber she would do it. By the grace of God, she lived on the same street as Robb’s studio so I saved a lot of money. She came in and knocked it out in about an hour and the rest was history.”

Dark’s expansive artistry encompasses politically charged hip-hop, buttery R&B, grimy rock, street savvy poetry, literature, non-dogmatic spirituality, and singer-songwriter style emotional intimacy. Previously described as “Michael Jackson’s band meets Inspectah Deck of WuTang meets the energy from Queens that made the Ramona’s play fast”, Timothy Dark’s music is rich, diverse and unpredictable.

“The new ‘Dark Day Afternoon’ EP pulls ample inspiration from Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, Tears for Fears, The Cars and Elvis Presley. I spent years listening to their music, originally for sampling purposes. But I became a fan and couldn’t stop listening and learning from them all,” says Dark.

“Most people don’t know I have written pop songs for years. I just never released many of them because I loved rapping so much. But now that I have a band, it’s time to dig out the pop and alternative songs and let the world hear them. It’s time to let people know that I’m not just a rapper; I’m an all around songwriter. This EP is the beginning of all of that.”

Born in Harlem, Timothy Dark was raised in East Elmhurst, Queens and the South Bronx before the streets were sanitized. He learned how to survive amidst the violence and corruption of hard times New York. One of his most formative moments was his mother boldly placing him onstage during a James Brown concert and the Godfather of Soul shaking his hand. It has become a symbolic gesture on many levels with the feeling like, in that handshake, James Brown transferred an electricity that courses through Timothy to this day.

The emergence of hip-hop as an art form became a way to observe and experience and street life and turn it into something special as a solo artist and as a member of rap crews. He’s opened for Nas, Black Rob, and immersed himself in New York City’s thriving Antifolk scene, collaborating with such talents as Nellie Mckay and Nicole Atkins.

‘Dark Day Afternoon’ will be available on March 30 across digital stores and streaming platforms. Timothy Dark and The Indestructible Characters launch the EP that night at New York’s DROM (85 Avenue A), along with Liz Rees and Miss Represent. Their next show scheduled for April 14 with American Anymen, Crazy and the Brains, Phoebe Blue, Dolltits and Clinical Trials at Search Party Studios (71 Wave Avenue, Staten Island).

Switzerland-based sextet Soldat Hans began their career as an instrumental noise band playing solely improvised sets. The turning point happened around 2013 when they settled to write some material for their first album “Dress Rehearsal”, which was released in November 2014. Taking their name from the old fairytale “Des Teufels russiger Bruder” by the brothers Grimm, the sound of Soldat Hans somehow echoed the desolate feeling of this very tale, also making reference to others like Mahler and Schubert. “Dress Rehearsal” was an adventurous journey crossing disparate musical genres like doom, post-rock, drone and dark jazz.

After playing numerous gigs in support of their debut album the Swiss group now returns with their sophomore album, “Es Taut”. A three song album spanning 54 minutes, “Es Taut” was recorded in Winterthur by Philip Harrison, who also recorded the band’s debut, and mastered by Magnus Lindberg in Stockholm. The album sees the band following the same trajectory explored on “Dress Rehearsal”, merging elements of doom, post-rock, drone and dark jazz to craft music that sounds utterly depressing, haunting and enigmatic and yet extremely engaging.

Seattle’s Walking Papers, will be hitting the road this spring with Alice In Chains beginning, April 28 in Boston. They will also be playing select headline dates as well as the WNOR Lunatic Luau. The band features singer/songwriter Jefferson Angell, keyboardist/backing vocalist Benjamin Anderson (both from The Missionary Position), bassist Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), and drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season) but because of previous commitments Duff McKagan and Barrett Martin will not be along for these dates. Instead Angell and Anderson will be joined by Nate Daley (guitar), Dan Spalding (bass, upright bass and baritone saxophone), Will Andrews (drums), and Gregor Lothian (saxophone).

“I first came across Alice in Chains while I was still in middle school and well before they redefined alternative hard rock,” says Jefferson Angell. “Their influence on me as a musician is immeasurable. To have them invite us as the support act on their upcoming US tour is an honor that validates me as an artist in ways that are both hard to imagine or explain.”

Walking Papers recently released WP2, their second album with Loud & Proud Records, on January 19, 2018. “Wilt” will be Mammoth Indigo’s second full-length, following their 2013 debut self titled album. Mammoth Indigo has toured with Taking Back Sunday, The Soil & The Sun, You Blew It!, and Joey Cook (American Idol) on top of hundreds of other headlining shows during their own US tours. They’ve played festivals like FMMF, universities on the east coast, and have played coast to coast throughout the US. Their upcoming album, ‘Wilt’, is expected to be released in full in March. Mammoth Indigo just played in Austin on the 16th at the FeedBands Artist showcase during SXSW. A stint of east coast tour dates are being booked in July, to be followed by a cross country tour in the fall.

Chuggy guitar riffs, kick drum blasts and spitfire vocals define Austin pop-punk powerhouse group, Gold Steps. Earlier this month the band, led by energetic firestorm Liz Mauritz (vocals) and rounded out by Zach Duarte (lead guitar), Elias Perez (rhythm guitar), Erasmo “Raz” Garcia (bass), and Roger Steadman (drums), announced their forthcoming EP, Incandescent. Produced by Rick King of King Sound, the EP (out 5/28/18) is a musical representation of emotions experienced in mood cycling episodes. It starts out with fire, a taking-on-the world feeling which could be interpreted as a sort of manic state, but as the EP progresses the tone becomes more erratic.

The “Firestarter” music video was filmed by Brandon Timekeeper of Timekeeper Media and plays heavily on the themes of the EP with the focus being around a group of friends at a bonfire and engaging in a color war like battle with friends Forever Starts Today. Sparks fly and things heat up as the video progresses, leaving viewers with a visual representation of what the EP encapsulates. Mauritz expands on the song:

“Even in your darkest moments, when you feel like everything’s working against you and you want to give up, there’s still an ember, a spark inside of you; and if you nurture that spark, you can come back burning brighter and stronger than ever. You just have to work for it.”

An essayist and a poet to boot, IAKO’s creative fulcrum stems from literature, specifically Greek and Roman. Queen of Balance explores Jacopo’s epiphany that his departure from Venice just reified the profound connection he’s had with it his whole life. Famed for its canals, water is something of a thematic obsession for the songwriter, stemming back to the early stages of his life, when he fell into one of its numberless canals before being promptly rescued by his mother. Jacopo refers to this episode as his initiation; a baptism into the world of elemental world of currents and nature. These two things often inform his lyrics as he creatively reflects on the currents that swept him from Italy to the UK.

California-based, Billboard chart-topping hard rockers MOTOGRATER have a packed 2018 ahead of them, following on the heat generated from their long-awaited second album, 2017’s Desolation, released on Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson’s EMP Label Group. Most recently, the band announced several spring and summer tour dates, set to begin on May 6 in Las Vegas, NV. The set of dates will run through June 2 in Pipestem, WV when the band performs at Metal in the Mountains. Two more festival dates will follow in mid June and July. Stay tuned for the upcoming release of a brand new music video for the band’s second single, “Daggers”, directed by Matt Lord Zane in Los Angeles. The band is set to begin writing their third full-length album in the fall.

“The future looks really bright for MOTOGRATER at this point,” says Nunes. “You may ask ‘why are we still relevant?’ Because we write good songs. Because we believe our recordings and our live shows speak for themselves. The sky is the limit, really.”

Last year, MOTOGRATER released the official lyric video for the first single, “Parasite,” directed by Brian Cox of Gemini Syndrome and Hollywood Undead.

Seminal UK Rapper K Koke is set to release a 6 track EP ‘FFF Prison’ and has just dropped the first taste of it live on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra with DJ Charlie Sloth to a tune of 5 wheel ups.

Featuring Dappy, ‘On Remand’ lays bare the frustrations and emotions of a man wrongly accused and subjected to time behind bars without bail. The realities of missing key moments in his children’s lives and seeing loved ones lives upturned all come to the forefront in the moving and honest account of this very public period in Koke’s life.

Set to be available from Friday across all stores, alongside the pre-release of the entire EP, the record has already sparked major interest with fans, as both Koke and Dappy took to their Instagram accounts to drop images of them together at the video shoot, making them eager to find out more. Upon Koke then heading in to BBC Broadcasting House to announce the release of his EP and let Charlie play the record on the airwaves for the first time, Twitter exploded in a flurry of excitement as DJ’s and fans instantly started requesting to hear the record again.

Added to the selection of the 5 other tracks, the EP becomes a musical journey and lyrical exploration of Koke’s time behind bars, which shrouded a major time in his career with a dark shadow and controversy that was ignited by the media and caused worldwide interest in his story.

Finally able to tackle all angles surrounding this period of his life and speak freely, honestly and emotionally about them, Koke enlists UK favourites Maverick Sabre, Dappy, Big French and Angel on the records to deliver a varying tone and pace that provide a marked and personal account of his emotions and situations, both inside and outside of prison.

Once again set to cause a furore, his undeniable talent has clearly been stirred as he ramps up the intensity of his craft with a matured and seasoned lyricism and delivery, that seize the interest of both the hardened rap fan already familiar with his story, and those yet to make the discovery of the exceptional rap talents of K Koke.

Seattle-based post-punk outfit Nostalgist has unveiled ‘Pendulums’ ahead of releasing their new album ‘Disaffection’, slated for vinyl and digital release on March 30. The six-track offering includes five original songs and a cover of ‘Texture’ from shoegaze legends Catherine Wheel’s 1992 classic album ‘Ferment’. This new single follows up the super lush shoegaze-leaning rippers ‘Present:Tense’ and ‘Smoldering Amber’.

Formed in 2012, Nostalgist is led by Asa Eisenhardt (vocals and guitar). ‘Disaffection’ follows ‘Of Loves and Days Ago’ (2015) and 2013’s ‘Monochromantic’ EP, which was engineered, mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, King Woman, Tony Molina).

Recorded and mixed throughout 2016 and 2017, every track on ‘Disaffection’ features great contributions by renowned drummer Aesop Dekker (Khorada, Worm Ouroboros, Extremity, ex-Agalloch). More recently, in the fall of 2017, Alex Entrekin joined as the new drummer, building on Dekker’s crushing performances while bringing nuances and twists all his own. Monte McCleery (also of Seattle funeral doom outfit Un) is currently filling in on bass.

Nostalgist’s brand of heavy, ethereal post-punk is informed by bands like Lowlife, Slowdive, Lycia, Comsat Angels, The Chameleons, Killing Joke, Fields of the Nephilim, Hum, and Red House Painters.

“The metaphorical, titular pendulum “cut[ing] both ways” is the arduous back-and-forth painfully wearing away at the seams of a relationship. ‘Pendulums’ not only laments the ending of that relationship, but also self-examines one’s own counterproductive contributions. Both parties involved are incompatibly who they are, and both of them hurt from the fallout. The best one can do is see the situation for what it is and move on. That dogged resilience in tandem with the gloom thematically flows right into the subsequent song on the record ‘Present:Tense’,” says Asa Eisenhardt.

Emotional openness has been the band’s hallmark since the band’s beginnings. Since its inception, Nostalgist’s sonic blend has been equal parts swirling riffs, expansive shoegaze atmospheres and airy post-punk isolation, combined with a romantic, self-questioning lyrical bent and cinematic themes. Lush layers of warm guitar fuzz and shimmering reverb interweave with melodic bass, intricate drums and evocative, determined vocals, tempering the music’s melancholy with just a slight sliver of hope.

Nostalgist crafts lush and powerfully intense distortion-laden dream rock riffs. A love of film noir, a sense of isolation and a decidedly romantic aesthetic shine through what are generally vulnerable lyrics. Eisenhardt’s talents in post-punk song-crafting are illuminated in the darkest moments with the warm, glowing embers of nebulous shoegaze.

The outfit’s latest output only further refines these sounds and ideas. “When writing ‘Disaffection,’ my sights were firmly set on creating a handful of focused, memorable songs that crystallized everything I’ve wanted Nostalgist to be, to the best and most thorough degree possible. It’s a mission statement on the direction of everything to come,” says Eisenhardt.

The ‘Disaffection’ album will be released on March 16 on vinyl and digitally on March 30 via the band’s own label imprint Nostalgium Directive. It is already available for pre-order via Bandcamp at https://nostalgist.bandcamp.com/album/disaffection.

Nova Flares

Alternative rock shoegaze artist Nova Flares presents ‘Krokodil Tears’, which is the second single off his forthcoming self-titled debut EP, expected for release in mid-2018. This single follows in the tracks of the solid and beautiful surf-gaze single ‘Gut Splinter’.

Nova Flares is the solo project of Jason Wagers, whose music as a solo artist cleverly combines shoegaze with neo-psychedelic and surf rock. The result is mighty fine bedroom jangly surf pop packed with flowing dreamy harmony and charming, lo-fi goodness. This hypnotic guitar shimmer packs the magic punch intended.

Conceptually this song imitates the simple idea of two energies traveling towards one another and creating a beautiful reaction. The verses are slightly sensual sounding and invoke motive, the pre-chorus comes in and sounds so peaceful, yet there remains a slight feeling of chaos in the mix. Then suddenly everything starts feeling easy going and perfect after the chorus hits, like everything is just the way it was meant to be.

“Slow-Building. Explosive. Passionate. I imagined beautiful explosions in the sky when i was making this song…. & maybe methodical love making at some point. I wanted a gut feeling of satisfaction at the end, so that’s what I aimed for,” says Jason Wagers.

“This song, along with every track being released on the coming EP, are meant to be strictly musical however, I intentionally made these tracks very spacious and vibey so that the listener could attach whatever memory or emotion that they get while listening to a song. This should be a more personal experience. To me, that means that to every different listener, it’s a completely different song, and I like that idea. Similar to the idea of a “nova flare”, this ends up being a memory of giant reaction.”

Hailing from Berea, Kentucky, he moved to Louisville at 18 where he played in various bands until deciding to put out his own album under the name The Corridors. Writing, recording and producing all tracks in his apartment studio, Wagers released the debut album in April 2017, only to be crushed by a British record label claiming to represent a band by the same name, who demanded he cease using this name. By that time, Wagers was eager to start a solo project in a completely new direction, inevitably creating a very specific atmosphere in his new compositions.

This music is heavily influenced by neo-psychedelic bands of the 90’s through to those currently active, such as Black Market Karma, Mystic Braves, Holy Wave and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Jason Wagers has dubbed his sound “surfgaze”, the style borrowing gazey elements that can be traced back to My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Beach Fossils and The Jesus and Mary Chain, while also being influenced by surf and beach-goth-psych bands like The Growlers, La Luz, The Warlocks and the Allah-Las.

The bright, reactive sound of this music inspired the project’s name ‘Nova Flares’. A nova is an astronomical event causing the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently ‘new’ star that slowly fades from view. This involves an interaction between two stars and cause a flare up, which is perceived as a new entity that is much brighter than the stars involved. Ironically, this new project was also born from the destruction of The Corridors.

“The songs I create through Nova Flares are supposed to be very cinematic and capture memories and feelings from situations I’d experienced in my childhood and adult life, but these songs are also meant to be left open ended so that the listener could have their own personal sensory experience as well,” says Jason Wagers.

Playing in bands and writing music since the age of 14, he eventually learned enough in the music sphere to start producing his own records, appreciative of the freedom and ability to record his own songs and release his own records. Growing beyond guitar to also bass guitar, drums and piano and also dabbling with vocals over the years. His Nova Flares project provided the perfect opportunity to develop his skills even further.

While ‘Krokodil Tears’ will only release on May 4 via online stores and streaming platforms, this and previous single ‘Gut Splinter’ are available via Nova Flares’ own Bandcamp. The release of Nova Flares’ eponymous EP shall follow in June.

Timsters

With his works for inter alia, – Colorado, Praa, Maximilien, French artist Timsters shapes a very modern sound. A singular one that is made of different genres mixed together, a synthesis of electronic, urban and pop music. Beyond these eclectic influences, Timsters made a veritable family team in his label – Elephant & Castle, a place where humans are the matrix.

So, no surprise to observe that it’s the main dimension that comes out of his songwriting. Sensitive and personal tracks that he let grow patiently and an environment that permits him to drop all masks. A record like a gradation where shades are in the foreground and where cocoon-like productions welcome obsessive and limpid melodies.

With new single ‘Somewhere’, Timsters confirms his ease to explore private territories with a touch of lightness. Here, he just needs a key and a drum machine to suggest wandering under grey skies. The producer handles his synthetic friends whose pearly voices act like a lighthouse through the fog. Like his previous single ‘Gone’, this new track catches the blur that often follows a new ending: delicious loss and disturbing moments. ‘Somewhere’ is an interrupted moment akin to Taniguchi : melody of The Walking Man.

Alba Plano

London-based jazz and neo-soul artist Alba Plano has announced the release of her single ‘Out There’ on 20th April via Sunrise, to be taken from her upcoming EP White Lotus. For the last two years, Plano has fronted Forever Amy, a project featuring Amy Winehouse’s original band, touring and performing in large venues throughout Europe and the UK. She has performed backing vocals for Ninja Tune’s Jordan Rakei and has collaborated with a host of accomplished musicians such as Dale Davis (bass player and musical director for Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner and Freak Power), Jim Hunt (sax for Richard Ashcroft, Brand New Heavies, Noel Gallagher, Jamiroquai) Troy Miller (drummer and producer for Laura Mvula, Becca Stevens, Jamie Cullum) and with a previous project opened for Elio e le Storie Tese at Shepherds Bush Empire.

The Sicilian-born songstress has been singing since her teens, and began her jazz vocal studies in her early twenties with acclaimed vocalists such as Norma Winstone, Kurt Elling, Barry Harris, Bob Stoloff, Joe Blake and Maria Pia De Vito, encouraging her to experiment with using her voice as an instrument, and leading to a fascination with contemporary jazz.

Stylistically comparable to Solange, Esperanza Spalding and Erykah Badu, Plano draws influence from a wide array of artists, including Becca Stevens, Gregory Porter, Lianne La Havas, and Jill Scott, and is also strongly influenced by Nina Simone, Bobby McFerrin and many other jazz singers. Her passion for hip-hop and neo-soul is also strongly evident. The upcoming album, White Lotus was co-produced and co-written by Alba Plano and Karme Caruso (Omar, Maverick Sabre, Karyn White), with some of the lyrics co-written by Davide Shorty (Retrospective for Love, Mr Jukes).

White Lotus delivers a sound that will unite both loyal classic jazz and neo-soul listeners alike. With its intimate tones, simple and honest melodies combined with soulful harmonies it creates a compelling new sonic mix. The album will feature Karl Rasheed-Abel, David Mrakpor, Luca Faraone, Michael Castellanos, Joao Caetano, Julian Mazzariello, Dario Deidda, Enzo Zirilli, and Stefano Costanzo, Amadu Kholifa, Jim McCrae, Alessandro La Barbera, Jim Hunt, Graeme Flowers and Chris Webb.

Alba Plano’s ‘Out There’ is a soulful, elegant and intimate excursion displaying smooth, sophisticated voice work, a driving double bass riff, joyful and tasteful vibraphone, dreamy piano colours and stylish guitar lines, all shimmering over swinging grooves inspired by her soul, jazz and classical influences. It has a consistently dynamic and spirited groove, and demands to be listened to over and over again.

Speaking of ‘Out There’ Alba says: “it’s about fears, about the limitations we hold within ourselves because it make us feel safe, because at least “we know who we are”. But that’s not helping when you want to grow and expand your soul, it takes a big amount of love, respect and trust for oneself to be able to see from a different perspective”.

“I was listening to Laura Mvula and Gregory Porter, their music definitely inspired the melody and the rhythm of this song”.

Karme adds: “This song was a bit of a musical journey, originally arranged in a few different ways. Then we opted for a raw acoustic vibe, quite different from the sound of the other tracks on the EP.”
