Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.
The Moogfest 2017 music lineup is led by Flying Lotus, Animal Collective, Gotye, Suzanne Ciani, Derrick May, 808 State, Jessy Lanza, Simian Mobile Disco, Moor Mother, Syrinx, Visible Cloaks, Princess Nokia, and Function.
Over forty of the artists announced today will also participate in the Future Thought daytime program including Flying Lotus and Animal Collective, who will both headline a conversation, and Detroit’s godfather of techno, Derrick May, who will hold his own masterclass.
We are also excited to announce that Gotye, Peanut Butter Wolf, and The Center for Deep Listening will lead tributes to the sonic icons we have lost recently. Gotye will honor the late French electronic music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey with an intimate performance of Perrey’s space-pop compositions alongside a newly assembled Ondioline Orchestra (ft. members of the Psychedelic Furs and Zammuto), The Center for Deep Listening will present daily workshops that celebrate the teachings of Pauline Oliveros, who prior to her sudden passing had been invited to appear at Moogfest 2017, and Peanut Butter Wolf will perform a tribute DJ set with a special dedication to synth legends like Keith Emerson and Bernie Worrell.

Low Roar – the name under which Ryan Karazija records and performs – is excited to announce the upcoming release of a new album. Once In A Long, Long While… will be released via Nevado Music on May 5. In advance of the album he is sharing the album’s first single, “Bones”, premiered today on The Line Of Best Fit who described it as “distant scrapes of electronica and warm, soothing pop – everything sounds as if underwater, trapped in a personal bubble, with only whispered vocals and stabbing, heartbeat percussion clambering into focus.”
Recorded in London with longtime collaborator Mike Lindsay (Tunng), Once In A Long, Long While… is the follow up to 2014’s 0, which earned Karazija a large new audience after his music was discovered by iconic Japanese video game creator Hideo Kojima. Kojima used Low Roar’s “I’ll Keep Coming” and “Easy Way Out” on two high-profile trailers in 2016 for his Death Stranding video game starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and director Guillermo del Toro.
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area to a mother of Mexican descent and a Lithuanian father, the frontman spent his formative years playing in bands around Northern California before relocating to Iceland in 2010 where he recorded Low Roar’s self-titled debut in his Reykjavik kitchen. Quietly building buzz, he cut the critically acclaimed follow-up, 0, in a converted garage in 2014 before going on to grace the stages of ATP, Eurosonic, Airwaves France, The Great Escape, Lowlands, Iceland Airwaves, and beyond.
After touring the world in support of 0, Karazija spent most of 2016 as a solo traveller, visiting everywhere from Iceland, Sweden, and Poland, to the Bay Area, and Mexico before settling permanently in Warsaw. During this time, he carefully assembled his third full-length record.
“I was alone for most of the process,” Ryan affirms. “There were a lot of great things that happened, and there were a lot of bad things that happened. There were really beautiful moments like the birth of my nephew, and there were really hard moments as I dealt with relationship changes. It helped to get it all out. I don’t think I would’ve made the same record if I was in one place.”
In the midst of these travels, he entered a London studio for a week in April with longtime collaborator Mike Lindsay [Tunng]. Recording wrapped with a final three-day session at producer/mixer Andrew Scheps’ [Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adele, Hozier] studio in Wales at the end of August.
Penned in Mexico, today’s single “Bones” begins with a delicate piano punctuated by glitches as Ryan sings, “I’m exactly where I want to be, but I’m a long way from home.” As the beat builds, he duets with Icelandic songstress Jófríður Ákadóttir, yielding a haunting and heavenly harmony.
“I was in Sweden until March [of 2016] and I then wound up in Warsaw, Poland, which brought me full circle,” he recalls. “A recent relationship had just ended. ‘Bones’ tells this story. You’re in a relationship and you don’t want it to end, but your significant other does. That’s the way it is.”
Ultimately, Once In A Long, Long While… reflects Low Roar at Ryan’s rawest. “I didn’t think that much about it,” he leaves off. “I just needed to get these songs out. I was documenting my life as it was happening.” In support of Once In A Long, Long While…, Low Roar will be touring the UK and Europe – see dates below. An extensive tour of Mexico & North America kicks off in Mexico City on April 6 and culminates in two nights at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall on May 15 & 16.

Listen to the Carrie Lane’s latest single “If I Can’t Be With You” just premiered last week. Focusing on the all-consuming feeling you get after falling in love, the fun tune is about wanting to be with the person you love 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Miami-based, by way of South America, rock quartet PRIME MINISTERS are pleased to share “Satisfied,” the latest single from Asymmetric, their most complete work to date. Available March 31, 2017, the eight-song collection blends a unique combination of genres reminiscent of the band’s eclectic rock influences and era’s. “You might not initially pinpoint our sound,” explains front-man Ernesto Estrada, “but we will definitely get you somehow.” Guitarist Shaggy chimes in “Ernesto’s lyrics are simple yet striking. Cynical and hedonistic, but always engaging.”
Adding to the offering, to celebrate the release of their iTunes exclusive single, the band will be performing live in Miami, FL tonight, March 2nd at Gramps with more dates to be announced shortly.
“Satisfied is our song about relationships and our expectations of others,” Estrada explains. “This song turned into being our show opener because it grabs people right away and has a great tempo. At the end of the day with relationships you are either satisfied or you’re not.”
Hailing from our southern shores in the Wynwood section of Miami, FL, PRIME MINISTERS’ no-bullshit and straight-to-the-point message is clear. The quartet is ready to invade the US with the release of Asymmetric. With accolades under their belt including electrifying performances at Columbia’s Rock Al Parque, SXSW, and Great Escape, the four-piece craft songs reflective of their diverse life observations and self-proclaimed simplicity, while drawing from their roots of various rock influences and an array of boisterous guitar-driven eras. Make no mistake. PRIME MINISTERS are not a Latin band. They are a fucking rock band that write songs around the world as they see it around them.
Rising up in the newly revived music scene in Asbury Park, fuzz-pop duo Yawn Mower are set to release their second EP of originals, What’s All This New Piss?, out March 11th, 2017.
Yawn Mower was formed in the summer of 2015 by Mike Chick (guitar, vox) and Biff Swenson (drums, vox) after their past projects had played together frequently over the years. The idea was simple, make fuzzy surfy good time tunes while having a blast doing it. The band has played with Mothers (Wichita Recordings), Screaming Females (Don Giovanni Records), Parlor Mob (Roadrunner Records), The Jigsaw Seen (Burger Records) and have performed at Convention Hall on Halloween, as well as The Stone Pony on New Years Eve. Their live show is a blend of, “high energy fuzz, comedic relief, and a healthy dose of familiar hits from bands much more successful than Yawn Mower.”
What’s All This New Piss? Was recorded with Pat Noon (River City Extension, Brick + Mortar) at Eight Sixteen in Bayville, NJ. It was mastered by Alan Douches (Cage The Elephant, Brand New) at West West Side in New Windsor, NY. It will be released on CD independently, cassette through Cassanova Cassettes, and lathe cut vinyl through In The Clouds Records.

POPPONGENE is excited to share her brand new single ‘Esky’ with the world today! ‘Esky’ is the third single release following her dreamy single ‘Belgravey’ and features on a very special limited edition 7″ vinyl which is available for order via bandcamp right now.
“I wrote this song last year when spring was slowly creeping in, but up in the hills we’d still get a serious frostiness in the mornings and evenings. I had this real winter hangover, my house felt damp and I was sick of the daily grey skies. Essentially Esky is about wanting to spend quality soul-warming time at the beach and being in the sunshine with your mates. I just love the fertile, can-do attitude that summer brings on, so I guess it’s just about the ~summer vibe~ and all that it brings.” – Poppongene (Sophie Treloar)

Electronic art pop project KYOTI have announced the latest release ‘Battle Cry’ from their eagerly anticipated debut EP ‘Orbit’. The release was supported by a London launch night at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington on the 27th February.
Made up of Ed Burgon, David Mabbott and Benji Huntrods, KYOTI combine their respective influences of folk, jazz, and pop to create a sophisticated contemporary electronic sound. Blending rich synths, polyrhythmic programmed beats and storytelling lyrics, the trio succeeds in painting an imaginative landscape of texture and emotion. ‘Battle Cry’ opens with Burgon’s vocals over a minimalistic, teasing beat, building towards a crescendo of Kavinsky-esque synths and energetic drum beats.
Following on from their most recent release ‘Chimera’ which examines darker themes of loss and internal conflict, ‘Battle Cry’ explores a different kind of change, dealing with the decisions we face growing up. According to the group, ‘Battle Cry’ is “a reflection on that period of time which follows having spent your entire life in education…You don’t want to be defined by what other people expect of you, but feeling like that’s the only way you can carve an identity.” For KYOTI then, this track is a statement; lead singer Ed Burgon defiantly cries “I won’t shed my skin for anyone”, highlighting the pressure young people face as they enter a world for which they are crucially unprepared by the educational system.
The group cites the likes of Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper, Bob Dylan and Hozier as influences upon their ability to tell stories, by blending hip-hop style freeform rhyme with the melodic phrasing of classic singer-songwriters and contemporary pop. But their creative powers do not stop at their downtempo electro sound; KYOTI is indeed best understood as an art project. Drawing inspiration from British modernist sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth and the surrealist optical illusions of M.C Escher, the group makes use of colourful, abstract imagery in the face of the mundane urban environment to create feelings of fantastical escapism.
In their latest release from upcoming EP ‘Orbit’, art project KYOTI explore the difficulties faced by young people in today’s world by blending bright synth-pop with powerful lyrical imagery. Having already earned support from the likes of Indie Shuffle, Complex, C-Heads and Clash, 2017 is looking bright for the London trio.
Gettoblaster and Rescue
Purveyors of the Detroit and Chicago house sound that has keep dancefloors bumping for nearly four decades, production / DJ duo Gettoblaster are now lending their sound to the Atlanta house heads over at Psycho Disco Records. Their second release with the Georgia based label, Gettoblaster have teamed up with Rescue for new single “Turn It Up.” A six-minute slice of four on the floor heaven, the single combines groove and gyrating rhythms for a retro-tinged classic.
Not stopping there, “Turn It Up” transforms into a truly international affair thanks to the enlistment of Brooklyn’s Codes and UK G-House don Vanilla Ace for the track’s official remixes. Whether the original hits a sweet spot, you’re a slave to the pulsating beat of Codes’ remix, or you’ve found yourself dancing like you’ve never danced before to Vanilla Ace’s maniacal makeover, “Turn It Up” leaves no audiophile unsatisfied.
Berlin-based indie-electronica artist Joplyn returns with her emotional and thought provoking new track ‘Against the Stream’. Co-written with electronic music heavyweights Booka Shade, the single is set for release on 27th January via the label Stone Free Berlin.
The young artist of Vietnamese, German and Canadian decent sets a haunting tone with the track’s heavy drum beat and harsh industrial sounds that produce a dark atmosphere fitting for modern city life. Taken from her own experiences living in Berlin, lyrically she describes the extreme contrasts and contradictions of society and the differences of life in the ‘concrete jungle’. Though urban life may be daunting at times Joplin encourages others and herself to have the faith and courage to follow your own path, to go ‘against the stream’.
After the release of her debut E.P ‘Cold Flames’, Joplyn caught the attention of legendary electronic music duo Booka Shade who jumped at the chance to work with her, co-writing the track. The single also includes a special Booka Shade radio edit as well as a club remix. The fellow Berliners, who have been named by Resident Advisor as one of the world’s top five acts, manage to accentuate the tracks emotive, lonely atmosphere. The remix uses pulsating basslines, break-beats and unique synth-noises, which produce the sound that one has come to expect from the electronic music pioneers and further adds to the track’s mystery and edge.
Joplyn discovered music at the young age of five and began learning to play the piano. Her music merges a mix of indie-pop, electronica and alternative R&B. Speaking of her influences she explains, “I listen to a lot of different music, but at the moment I am inspired by artists such as Banks, Sohn, Lorde, London Grammar, Ry X, FKA Twigs, Aaliyah and Sade…” She released her debut E.P. via Stone Free Berlin in May 2016; this was an evocative introduction to Joplyn’s songwriting where she talks of personal experiences, fears and hopes for the future, and of volatile and contrasting situations.
‘Against the Stream’ is a taster into the mysterious and dark musings of Joplyn and her modern views of urban life. With the release of her debut album landing in 2017, we wait in anticipation for the Berlin songstress’s next move.

While “River” has reached #2 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 charts and #1 on the Hype Machine Popular charts, Bishop Briggs’ track “Wild Horses” first gained traction when it was featured on Sirius XM Alt Nation, Zane Lowe’s BBC worldwide Beats 1 Show, and in ads for Acura’s 2016 TLX and ESPN’s NFL Playoffs. Both tracks are included on Bishop Briggs’ self-titled collection of songs on 12 inch for Record Store Day, which also contains “The Way I Do,” and “Pray (Empty Gun)”; as well as “Be Your Love,” “Dead Man’s Arms,” and the James Supercave Remix of “River.”
Klô Pelgag welcomes 2017 with a new video for Les ferrofluides-fleurs. It is the second single from L’étoile thoracique, her sophomore album to be released in Europe on February 3rd. The record is already available in Canada.
The video, directed by her long time collaborator BAZ, reveals an otherwordly and childish trailer park where we follow the meandering of a girl with a wan face as she smokes cigarettes, plays with plush toys and dogs, dances on fries and hamburgers. Partially shot on VHS, the video shows us once again Klô’s uniqueness as she displays her boundless creativity.
Liverpudlian Pop Punks WSTR have at last released their debut album, ‘Red, Green Or Inbetween’ via No Sleep Records. Vocalist Sammy Clifford says of the LP: “It’s mainly a breakup album, however it’s not a ‘fuck you’ album it’s more a ‘mad at myself’ album. The title is based on being stuck in limbo or in the ‘in-between’. Amber is also the name of a significant friend of mine who most of the songs are about, so it’s a pretty sad boy record. It’s all about kicking myself for not stepping up when I had the chance and coasting through life making bad decisions. The artwork is a voodoo doll which is meant to represent me, as I sometimes feel like someone is out to get me with all the bad luck I have.”
RGOI, produced and mixed by Seb Barlow at Celestial and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music, follows the success of their debut EP ‘SKRWD’ (No Sleep Records – Sept 2015). SKRWD aided the band in going from strength to strength, achieving accolades that most acts don’t achieve in a career, off the back of only one 6-tracker. 2016 saw WSTR, completed by guitarist Kieren Alder and Danny Swift and bassist Alex Tobijanski, grace stages in the UK and Europe with international touring bands such as Neck Deep, ROAM, A Wilhelm Scream & Creeper; on a headline tour; and warmly welcomed onto established festival slots, at Slam Dunk Festival, 2000 Trees, Hevy Fest, Destruction Derby and Butserfest.
In support of the release, WSTR today kick off a run of acoustic in-stores and will play as main support to Canadian pop punks Seaway into February. With these scrappy wasters more than happy to get in the van, you can only expect to see more of the quartet, with Clifford stating: “Putting out an album is a big scary step, but it’s been a long time coming and we’re ready to see what the world has to say and hopefully see some more of it.”

Kansas City’s Hembree has confirmed a run of dates in the Midwest. The first show sees the band at the Express Live supporting Cold War Kids in Columbus, OH on March 25 with the tour concluding on April 29 in Columbia, MO at Rose Music Hall. All dates are listed below.
Hembree’s latest single, the hard-hitting new single “Holy Water” was released in late 2016 and showcases a sonic ambition and clarity of purpose that’s formidable. The song has found success at alternative radio and is currently in rotation at 10 stations, including Columbus, St. Louis, and Kansas City. It has over 250K streams on Spotify and continues to be heavily playlisted. “Holy Water” is the follow up to the Kansas City band’s debut “Can’t Run Forever” which has seen over 500K streams on Spotify and Soundcloud.
2016 saw Hembree decamp to famed Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles for initial sessions with Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). After returning to Kansas City Hembree’s Isaac Flynn decided to table those sessions and take a different approach: “After ‘Can’t Run Forever’ came out I was feeling the pressure to make our second single bigger and better and found myself putting limitations on my writing. After being frustrated for several months I decided to record whatever I want; just let it all pour out.” With that mindset Flynn quickly recorded “Holy Water,” bringing in Eric Hillman (Foreign Fields) for additional production and mixer Joe Visciano (The Kills, Jamie xx, and Beck) to round things out.

Over the past several weeks, Natalie has been featuring singles off of her newest project, The Traces EP. Today fans can get the full package.
“ ‘Radio Silence’ is firmly rooted in the electro-pop genre and with its heady beat and ethereal vocals, makes us want to dance in the office. Despite the track’s *serious message, it is something we can enjoy, all while recognizing gender equality.” – Pancakes and Whiskey
“The album finds Cressman exploring a range of electronic elements with a live band, resulting in a refreshingly danceable and indie-modern vibe.” – Glide
” ‘Wind of Whims’ further blurs the line between organic and synthetic music production, taking the subtle but powerful vocals of Cressman and lining them with big (but tasteful) brass blasts along with really rich, warm drum work. It’s a new iteration of future bass that we’ve not quite heard before.” – The Untz
“Cressman’s album is an emotional exploration through a fusion of electronic and traditional instrumentation techniques. Always the thoughtful and intricate composer, Cressman’s expressive solo career comes through in waves on The Traces EP, and provides a sharp contrast for those who might only know her as a member of the Trey Anastasio Band” – Live for Live Music
