Press Release Roundup: May 13

posted May 15, 2016, 11:42 am by Carlita | Filed Under Music News, Press Release Roundup, Releases | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Art of Cool Fest

Returning for its third year, The Art of Cool (AOC) Fest brought a diverse mix of jazz, R&B and hip-hop legends and rising stars to Bull City for a weekend takeover. Fans and media outlets came from North, South, East, West and even across the pond to take part in the festivities, raising the profile of the relatively new and prominent fest yet again. Covering AOC for a second year, we obtained access to chat with the likes of Terrace Martin, 9th Wonder, Rapsody, Chantae Cann, The Internet, Moonchild, Kamasi Washington, Donnie, Derrick Hodge and Terrance Blanchard about Grammy experiences, current albums, unforgettable stage and studio moments and upcoming projects in the pipeline. Most exciting above all was the performing artists we spoke with all confirmed they have full plates of new music on the horizon. After the busy days of conversing with AOC acts (Dark Water Rising, The Beast and Bashiri Asad were new and welcome finds), we rested up for the night shows at venues around Durham which featured Anderson.Paak, J Davey and Art of Turntables with Dres Da Beatnik, Rich Medina, Pete Rock and DJ Maseo from De La Soul (yeah, that happened, too). Def well worth the time and effort and look forward to 2017’s!

Basia Bulat

With sold-out concerts in London, Berlin and New York City on her Spring 2016 tour and over 4 million streams for Good Advice, Basia will continue touring in support of the record this summer and will be in Los Angeles on June 8th playing at Largo with Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad). After that, she will be performing at many festivals in Canada and the U.S. Mostly notably, Basia will be at the prestigious Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island, at the Austin City Limits Festival in Texas and in her home town of Toronto for Field Trip on June 5th. See below for complete tour dates.

Bulat teamed-up with friend and collaborator Jim James of My Morning Jacket on the album’s production, driving 600 miles from her home in Montreal to La La Land recording studio in James’ hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Good Advice is a departure from Bulat’s previous work, with her voice backed up by drums, bass, electric guitar and keys. James plays electric guitar, synth, saxophone and bass on the album; further Louisville guests including members of Houndmouth, Twin Limb, Seth Kauffman of Floating Action and more also join Bulat.

Good Advice follows Bulat’s critically acclaimed Juno nominated and Polaris Music Prize short-listed 2013 release, Tall Tall Shadow, which The Line of Best Fit calls “a brilliant and engaging pop record” and the Austin Chronicle praises for its “lovely, spectral musing that balances indulgence with homespun tendencies.” In the two years since, Bulat has played shows across North America and Europe with Sufjan Stevens, Destroyer, Daniel Lanois, Bahamas and more.

Wildcat Wildcat

Wildcat! Wildcat! Featuring Wynne

“Relentless” was recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Wildcat! Wildcat! and Ran Jackson in Los Angeles

About “Relentless,” the band says…

“The seed for Relentless was planted three years ago after our show at First Avenue & 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. A cheerfully intoxicated girl walked by our van and tried to click her heels together in the air, not knowing we could see her through the tinted windows. She kept trying and trying and after many attempts eventually got it. We had a good laugh about it though, and then all of a sudden started beat-boxing and riffing and singing.

We worked on the song over the years since but it was never quite right. Then in February we began to work on it again with our producer Ran Jackson. We were able to carve out the space in the music which helped to finalize the lyrics to fit our blue collar perseverance attitude. But as we were about to finish up, Ran suggested we needed a rapper for the bridge. Something about that idea seemed to resonate with us. We’d always wanted to collaborate with someone but we didn’t know how it’d be possible or who would be a good fit, or how we’d play it live etc… as luck or fate would have it, our manager found this young rapper named Wynne… and as we were literally about 30 minutes away from calling off the idea, he emailed saying she was into the idea of working with us. Then…there was this fist bumping moment of bliss and shock. We never talked to her or gave her any kind of notes or anything really but she nailed the vibe, the message, the attitude…everything and it was exactly the missing piece of the puzzle we’ve trying to put together for years. She’s on the rise in a big way and we are so grateful that we got to work with her.

It’s ironic how things come full circle in their own way sometimes.

In the Wildcat world where songs force themselves to breathe and grow and take their time, we’re very happy to finally release this finished one… and we also just wanted to make a banger. Peace. Love. Amen. Out.”

Haze has created his own aesthetic way to bring music and visuals together and will alongside his album, drop a short film of the same name on May 16th. Based in London and on a true story, the project represents the conflict of an artist torn between two worlds. The streets and his passion; aspiring to be a successful artist, but having to do whatever it takes to support his dream and his family, which ultimately leads him to making the ultimatum decision. The 21-track album will include features from Akala, J Spades, Maverick Sabre and Black The Ripper.

Alek Fin

Following the success of their previous collaboration ‘Golden, Blinding’, Californian singer Alek Fin and Moscow-based producer Galun have teamed up once again to deliver their beguiling new ‘Strannik’ EP, set to drop 27th May 2016.

Bolstered by a quilt of seductive tones and subdued production, the duo’s collaboration is a spellbinding blend of electronica and chillwave: finding a place on the axis between the house and jazz-fused production styles of Bonobo and James Blake, and the electro-pop musings of artists like Future Trends and Deco Child.

The project is an enticing testament to the digital age; where strangers from across the globe can come together to create music while remaining continents apart. Although the pair have never actually met, their music tells a very different story. Innately rhythmic and gorgeously produced, tracks like ‘Clone’ and ‘Omens’ are polished off by spectral vocals and throbbing bass lines, flawlessly dovetailing their respective styles. Two features from Moscow-based producer and keyboard arranger YJMB, who is also a member of Galun’s live electronic band Amur Tiger Arkestra, buoy the release, with ‘Faces’ echoing Radiohead and ‘Cold’ – to which he contributed the backbone of synths and arpeggiators – raising the tempo with its heady percussive layers. Whilst ‘Fall’ oozes swirling, ominous production punctuated by punchy beats, it is lead single ‘Ionosphere’ which arguably best exemplifies the EP. Bringing together a swell of angsty textures, mellow grooves and channels of slow-burning rhythms, it forms electronic pop at its melodic and eerie best.

No strangers to collaboration, Alek Fin (real name Adam Finkel), who has previously worked with Robot Koch and produces for a number of local L.A. artists, and Galun (Sergei Galunenko) – who first crafted a career collaborating with a range of Russian artists as a talented beatboxer – first crossed paths when both were included on the same blog’s “Top 100 Tracks of 2013”. From the offset, geographical distance seemed no issue: in Galun’s words, “I found him, and I knew I wanted to work with him. I thought we could really add something to each other’s music, despite us living over 6000 miles apart”, whilst Fin was equally impressed with the Russian producer’s “manipulation of vocal percussion and inspiring melodies”.

Melding Fin’s hallmark basement rhythms and ghostly textures, which saw his 2015 ‘Án Mynda’ EP win him fans including Hillydilly, PopMatters and XLR8R, with Galun’s DIY take on beatboxing, which has seen him praised by no less than the Guardian, ‘Strannik’ not only represents a successful musical collaboration, but also the power and reach of art in the digital age.

Beautifully balanced by the subtle poise of chillwave and the dynamic rhythms of electro-pop, ‘Strannik’ is an intrinsically atmospheric and truly masterful EP which portrays a creative shared imagining between two artists in their elemen

The Jacques

Two minutes and thirty seven seconds is probably the perfect length for a pop song. Eleanor Ring Me could well be that song. Revolving around a riff that will stick in your brain, a voice that rasps out the words and a beat that walks along the sidewalk this is the sound of a band about to embark on their next musical journey.

With two critically acclaimed EP’s and mini album releases in Japan and Germany, this new song is the band’s first of 2016 and was recorded at the legendary RAK Studios, London and produced by Dan Swift. It is released on the band’s own label, Vegan Cyanide via The Orchard.

Since making their London debut at Hyde Park in May 2014 with The Libertines, The Jacques have been quietly establishing themselves as one of the UK’s best kept secrets – playing over 75 shows in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and USA.

Their forthcoming live schedule includes festival appearances at Dot To Dot, Live At Leeds, Kendal Calling, Down To The Woods, Grillstock Bristol and venturing further afield playing Amsterdam Damaris and Zomerparkfest in The Netherlands, Antwerp Les Nuits Botanique, Treviso Home Festival Italy and their debut show in Paris, France.

Recording has already begun on the band’s eagerly anticipated debut album, scheduled for release sometime next year. In the meantime shake your hips gently to the next two minutes and thirty seven seconds of pop history…… Eleanor Ring Me.

Bold, cinematic and infectious, Liverpool’s VYNCE come flying out of the stalls with irresistible vocal hooks and unforgettable guitar riffs in their debut ‘Lust’ EP after the title track dropped on Soundcloud to over 50K organic listens.

Honing their songwriting and performance over the past two years in a live setting supporting the likes of Prides, Fickle Friends, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blossoms and JAWS, the EP title track is as the title suggests; a passionate, lustful trip through tropical and psychedelic indie that leaves a sweet yet hard-hitting taste for more.

‘Fall For You’ follows with big, sentimental riffs which instantly conjure romantic, indie film soundtracks. Third track ‘Taste’ is a slightly mathy, bouncy, shimmering, electro-tinged rave, conjuring classic Manchester indie bands. Together, the EP is an exciting, tempting taste of a band set to smash their way forward in 2016.

The band consists of Peter Pegasiou (lead vox, guitar), Jack Kelsey (vox, guitar), Conor O’Shea (vox, bass) and Tom Davis (drums), aged between 20 and 22. Peter, the main songwriter of the group, didn’t fall naturally into music. In the early stages of secondary school, he would use music as an escape from the pressures of conformation commonly found in such environments. His skin head made him an unlikely candidate to excel in any kind of art, let alone start singing in a band. Still without musical belief, Peter moved on to John Moores University to study a law degree; as did Tom Davis with Pharmacy. It wasn’t long before the two boys realised they were more interested in music than their predictably bland degree subjects.

The band have featured heavily on local BBC Introducing radio shows such as Lancashire and Merseyside, including live sessions on BBC Radio Stoke and BBC Radio Lancashire. Most recently however, Dan O’Connell discovered the band’s only available song, ‘Lust’ which he was quick to feature as ‘the shock of the new’ on his Radio X show.

Rude Audio

Rude Audio are proud to announce their newest Rudest EP, due for release on June 7 through Zirkus Records. Featuring four tracks, this new release sees the band refining their trademark sound, and fusing their love of woozy dub with throbbing electronics.

Crystal Pylon demonstrates Rude Audio’s ability to weave the kind of hypnotic, Balaeric spell that merges an early 90s sensibility with something shiny and new. Knockemdub takes their Radio 6 championed tune Knockemdead, which featured the dulcet tones and melodic sound of rising star Eucalypta LV and rams it through the dubby, smoke filled orgone accumulator that comprises the collective’s hidden studio basement in the backstreets of south east London, to produce a mutant dub monster with half an eye on the appalling political melee that is Britain in 2016. Half Moon Lane Glitter reflects the band’s love of short and sweet stompathons – pulsating electronics meet staccato piano, uptown. User taps into their oldest love, crunchy, chugging, dubby analogue sounds, to create something that operates in the hinterland between melodic and relentless.

This DJ and production collective range in age from 19-53 with origins rooted in the gutters of south London and north east England. Historically, they have put on brilliant underground parties, created critically acclaimed electronic music, engineered for top artists and generally popped up at events with an open-minded underground ethos.

To date Rude Audio have three distinctly dubby and balaeric releases, which have garnered radio play and support from the likes of Don Letts, Tom Robinson, Gideon Coe and Nemone on Radio 6, Max Reinhardt on Radio 3, Rob Da Bank on Radio 1 and John Kennedy on XFM. They have also recently remixed the single Off The Drop for Bedford Falls Players, which is set for release this summer, and have produced music for End Recordings.

Sounds of Sputnik

Russia’s Sounds of Sputnik is releasing their single ‘Light Scheme (Fran Ashcroft Remix)’ from their debut LP ‘New Born’ feat. Ummagma, which also gets a re-release in early May through hallmark U.S. shoegaze label Moon Sounds Records. UK producer Fran Ashcroft, widely known for his work in the psych rock scene, has also worked with Damon Albarn (Blur) and Lords of Acid. The single comes with a smashing new video, produced and directed by Latvia/UK experimental filmmaker Dariy Karyakin and featuring actors Nadine Andreeva and Egon Skakun.

Dariy Karyakin has previously produced for David Lynch pet fave Nocturne Blue, has been praised by 6-time Emmy Winner Dutch Rall, and recently joined former Underworld consultant Yannick Joubert as part of the international Krinum Art and Design team. He is devoted to making music videos and short films, for which he has earned various awards and honours.

The ‘New Born’ LP presents a palette of ethereal guitar, powerful drums, lush bass, and clever guitars, topped off with gossamer female vocals. Sounds of Sputnik paired up with Canadian-Ukrainian dreampop duo Ummagma to co-write, produce, and record this album. Ummagma’s Shauna McLarnon and Alexx Kretov also both contribute stunning vocals.

Rooted in a shared love of melodic dream pop, post-rock and shoegaze, both Sounds of Sputnik and Ummagma bring their own influences from Lush, Curve, Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, together with Hammock, Jesus & Mary Chain and The Twilight Sad to create briliant “dream noise”.

The self-proclaimed gadabouts of moody pop, Supermoon, release their debut LP Playland on May 20th on Mint Records.

Rising from the ashes of two former Vancouver bands, the garage rock outfit Movieland and jangle pop 3-piece Pups, Supermoon borrows aspects from both groups to create catchy, challenging songs. Supermoon are Adrienne LaBelle, Alie Lynch, Kate Gravestock, and Selina Crammond

Playland is the follow up to the band’s 2015 EP Comet Lovejoy. Recorded with Tom Prilesky and mastered by Josh Stevenson at Otic Sound in Vancouver, BC the record bubbles with intelligent, weirdo songs that combine sunny riffs and distorted ring outs, all coated in sugary vocals.

Part hot fudge sundae, part film noir, prepare to be weirded out by the addictive and intricate novelty of Supermoon’s Playland on May 20th.

In his new release, entitled “Blind Without Shades” he gives listeners a minuscule preview of his life & style over a some how masterfully crafted instrumental that comes off as a hybrid of dancehall + reggae with a sort of electronic flavor added for taste.
