Dead Horse Beats

Opening up with a pulsing string pattern, ‘Dive’ is buoyed by warm, jazzy bass and a bed of glistening synth pads, creating a laid-back dance vibe reminiscent of SG Lewis. Standing toe-to-toe with a plethora of diverse musical heavyweights such as Ta-Ku and Snakehips, and having shared the stage already with the likes of Chashmere Cat, XXYYXX and Kaytranada, Wade’s myriad of disparate influences combine to create a unique, musical timbre that cements Dead Horse Beats as one of the most exciting artists in the electronic scene.

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino has confirmed that his third full length album, Awaken, My Love! (Glassnote Records/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company) is set for release on December 2, 2016. Today, his social media accounts revealed the album’s cover, track listing and a link to the album’s pre-order. First track, “Me and Your Mama” was debuted today by Zane Lowe as a Beats 1 World Record. Zane played the song 6 times in a row, a record for the program, with additional plays throughout the show.

As Childish Gambino once again sheds his skin, Awaken My Love! is a sonic evolution. It has been described as “R&B meets Pink Floyd,” by one journalist while others have cited an amalgam of rock, funk, and soul influences. It is a groundbreaking next step following the genre blending STN MTN / Kauai mixtape and the twice-Grammy nominated rap album, because the internet.

Breaking the mold and creating fully-formed, alternate worlds is a trademark of this creator, who presented Awaken My Love! first at his PHAROS festival in Joshua Tree, CA last September. To attend, fans utilized the scalper-proof PHAROS app which served as a “compass” that guided guests and communicated the ethos of both the event and the new music as “a gathering of the 5 intuitives of the human experience: tribe, ritual, experience abstraction, architecture, language.”

Chris Blacker

The latest vision by pianist and songwriter Chris Blacker is a story classically and purely New York. His first full length set of original songs, The Endless Chase, is a snapshot of an artist at a crossroads surrounded by the Bright Lights, Big City.

Having raised the money to record the 10-track effort working as he does every week playing piano at the legendary Uncle Charlie’s, Blacker assembled a stellar cast of live musicians and singers. The music, richly orchestrated and recorded, combines styles of pop/rock, jazz, and folk.

In Blacker’s own words:

“Lyrically, The Endless Chase centers on themes of striving, of trying to be an artist in a society that doesn’t value art, of trying to find real connection in a hyper- connected, image-obsessed world, of getting older: specifically in terms of the fallout from a more radical and idealistic worldview that I had when I was younger.

It’s also about the things that keep us going despite the odds: the occasional lifelines that come at unexpected times, the friends and lovers we meet along the way, and the sheer joy of creation. The album is (I hope) hopeful and uplifting, but it’s a hope that has been tested, not blind optimism.

My hope was to offer something that doesn’t make people feel nihilistic or artificially peppy, something that acknowledges the difficulties that many people face while still highlighting the reasons we keep going.”

Lions Sphere

Berlin based four-piece Lion Sphere are one of the most exciting German newcomers of 2016. Today they release their eclectic indie-rock-tinged, future-soul EP The Infinite You, following on from singles ‘Caravan’ and ‘Sisters’. The band blend thumping electronic fragments with heavy hip-hop grooves, spacious guitar licks and raw, soulful vocals to create a mixture of genres which don’t quite sound like anyone else, and this is what sets them apart in the German musical landscape.
The music is a mesmerizing fusion of dreamy melodic detail, airy synths, jazz infused drums and a satisfyingly throbbing bass presence.

Off the back of a grandiose artistic showcase at St Pancras Old Church, London-based alternative electronic four-piece Archivist return with ‘Same High’, the elevating single lifted from their second EP, ‘Memo’. Following on from the critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP, which saw support from Noisey, Dummy, The 405, Q Magazine and more; the release of ‘Same High’ marks a strong return for the multi-instrumentalists Edward Begley and Rory Simmons, who are now surrounded by a wealth of heavyweight talent in the full line up of Archivist.

This expansive group consists of lead singer and pianist Ed Begley; guitarist and Guardian freelancer Rory Simmons, who’s played live for Blur, Friendly Fires and Bat For Lashes; bassist Tom Mason, who’s recently been performing with classical sitar-player Anoushka Shankar, Questlove and Ghostpoet; and drummer Peter Ibbetson, who’s performed with the likes of Rosie Lowe and Valerie June. The union of these like-minded musicians yields a sound with sufficient pop sensibility and a definitive indie flare – with its glistening synths, cascading drum beats, evocative falsetto vocals and slick production. Speaking on lyrics and the meaning behind the track Ed explains how “Same High is about leveling with someone and enjoying the present moment”.

Hobart Curtis

Following up on his shimmering previous single ‘Am I Crazy’, Brisbane indie pop singer/songwriter Hobart Curtis strikes a chord with new single ‘Hits’, released Friday 11 November.

‘Hits’ is simultaneously infectious and melancholy, tapping into a universally-felt creeping sense of youthful ennui. As anyone with dreams can attest, unfortunately some goals will always remain slightly out of reach. Rooted in realism, ‘Hits’ is a restless call for validation that never loses its sense of identity; driven forward by chiming guitars and tumbling instrumentation. ‘Hits’ is anthemic in its despondency – a hymn for disenfranchised creative youth.

Sliding cunningly into the minds and hearts of the local music scene, Hobart Curtis’ debut track ‘Jackpot’ received triple j airplay and, subsequently, he received praise from tastemaking blogs such as acid stag. With the year now drawing to a close, Curtis’ ‘Hits’ aims to touch a raw nerve with young creatives, striking a pinpoint balance between honesty and ambition.

Iron Reagan

Just in time for election day, crossover punks IRON REAGAN call upon thee to join the holy order of thrash on their latest full-length, Crossover Ministry. Across 18 tracks and thirty minutes of frantic, punk-metal fury, IRON REAGAN mix a blitzkrieg of relentlessly catchy riffs and irresistible, mosh-ready grooves with punchy, thrash gallops and hardcore punk attitude. Watch a teaser for the album, which provides a preview of several tracks on the album and hilariously spoofs late night bible-thumping informercials.

Relapse Records

Relapse Records has released their free annual label sampler showcasing the label’s eclectic roster and featuring a track from every 2016 releases in addition to songs from brand new signings to look forward to next year. The 40-song sampler is available for free download and streaming via Bandcamp. From death metal and grindcore to experimental and electronic music, there is something for every listener!

The 2016 Relapse Sampler features songs from label heavyweights such as RED FANG, NOTHING, OBSCURA, THE ALBUM LEAF, OBITUARY, etc. alongside tracks from the debut full-lengths of WRONG, GATECREEPER, INVERLOCH, SUMERLANDS, BRAIN TENTACLES, and GRAVES AT SEA. Additionally the sampler contains tracks from special re-issues by metal legends DEATH and PENTAGRAM as well as from newly signed Relapse artists THE OBSESSED, INTEGRITY, KING WOMAN and CLOAKROOM.

Ingrid Witt

Of recent years, Scandinavia has arguably been producing some of the best talent in terms of modern electro-pop, which includes the likes of MØ and Lykke Li. Songwriter and producer Ingrid Witt is no exception from this. Having been hailed as “Sweden’s fresh new talent”, Ingrid Witt’s rise to success has begun, with her brand new contagious single Babies Gonna Cry.

From the name and aesthetic surrounding the track, Bat for Lashes and her memorable image come to mind whilst Fever Ray vocals sit well beside the glittery, high quality production. In terms of lyrics, Ingrid cleverly explores the concept of adulthood, which is interesting in contrast with her distorted, soprano vocals. Sonically, from the cool and contemporary element to the track, there are similarities to LANY. We guarantee that Ingrid Witt is NOT a name you’ll be forgetting anytime soon…

Babies Gonna Cry will be released on the 18th November 2016. Stay tuned soon for a pretty amazing video.

The News

The News is a collaborative musical project by Benjamin Thomas and Rachel Haines. The band is based in Philadelphia, and the songs that the band recorded were recorded in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. The ethos of the band was to attempt to apply a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis vibe to the music were making, but try to keep it somewhat contemporary.

As the title of the album reveals, “Takk Og Farvel; Tida Er Blitt Ei Annen” is also MYRKGRAV’s farewell record and disbanding statement all in one. Times change and the man changes with them. With a decade separating the first and second full-length with only crumbs having been shared in-between, naturally aspects have changed both for fans and band alike during the excruciatingly long radio silence. Because of this, the new album encompasses everything that MYRKGRAV’s has ever had to offer – or at least an attempt has been made, if we are making bold statements. As such, it was a natural choice to include re-arranged and re-recorded versions of a couple of old classic songs from the “Trollskau, Skrømt Og Kølabrenning” album, as homage to what most would probably call OG MYRKGRAV.

While not exactly time travel, MYRKGRAV aims to function as a looking glass into times past, its cultural oddities, values and stories. And while we are talking about stories, every single lyric for every song on the album will be illustrated with hand drawn illustrations in the style of famous Norwegian author, illustrator, painter and comic creater Kjell Aukrust. MYRKGRAV is all about the full package. Not only is new music used to tell stories of times past, but the stories also deserve to come to life through visual representation. Hopefully these forgotten tales will come to life in the minds of the many, from all around the world, and take their place in history once more.

New music from Simon Green aka Bonobo is always an event, but when it heralds the arrival of a whole new album (his first since 2013’s The North Borders), it’s really something to get excited about. The masterful, magisterial Migration is Green’s sixth album and it’s a record which cements his place in the very highest echelons of electronic music and beyond.

Lead track ‘Kerala’ was the first track Green recorded for the new record, putting together a rough version of it on the tour bus while DJing across the States in 2014. It’s both a classic piece of Bonobo music and a development, all arpeggiated, twisted, layered strings and shuffling dancefloor rhythm. The music gradually builds until his introduction of a sample from RnB singer Brandy, itself cut up and dealt with as a further texture, with the whole sitting in a sweet spot of uplifting euphoria that he’s so adept at finding. The hypnotic video (also released today), has been directed by Bison (Jon Hopkins/London Grammar/ Rosie Lowe). It compliments the shuffling arpeggios and beats perfectly by creating staggered loop effects where the lead Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace/Inside No. 9) battles through a mysterious, distorted reality with a meteor flying overhead. It was premiered this morning by Pitchfork.

Flora Cash

Flora Cash are a Scandi duo that have taken upon themselves to sonically explore the diversity of human relationships. They go straight to places where tears are shed, chairs are thrown, discussions of parting are present, but the music is created regardless. Having “met” on Soundcloud and instantly e-hitting it off musically, their “atmospheric in theme and vibe” material had soon after been supported by the likes of Noisey US, Paste, The Music Ninja, Earmilk, Interview Magazine and more.

With the release of their upcoming new album, containing the “Sadness Is Taking Over” single, Flora Cash face their most challenging moments to date sewn deep into the music. They instantly share this uneasy and raw kind of anxiety with the listener, the type that affects one’s mind, body and then somehow manages to creep into every aspect of one’s life, soon to be in control of it. Topping the song with the backing vocals, in the style of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, Cole and Shpresa are not only conveying their feelings but also examining them with each sung harmony.

The duo skilfully blend their deep love for acoustic soundscapes and layer it with just the right amount of ethereal production hinting at Mt Wolf, Poliça, Vogue Dots and Kings Of Convenience. Through the painful dialogue between Shpresa’s observations and Cole’s suffering, the duo succeeds at designing an inter-dimensional delicate yet mighty piece of music.

“Sadness Is Taking Over” creates a sonic desire for tranquillity and emotional freedom which despite the heartbreak, loss or destruction, aids one with the ability of personal growth and moving on.

Carousel Kings

Victory Records welcomes CAROUSEL KINGS to their roster. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania band has anchored their name as one of the most ambitious and creative pop/rock/punk machines in recent years. Check out the video for “Bad Habit,” from the full length Charm City which hits earth on February 10th, 2017.
