Furthermore, a record release show is tentatively scheduled for New York City in February of 2017.

Ishito’s new album was recorded with her longstanding quintet, which was formed in 2011. Unlike traditional jazz saxophone quintets, however, Ishito’s outfit focuses on musical stylings more akin to indie, progressive, and avant-garde music. Her compositions concentrate on rhythmic shifts and ensemble texture rather than featured solos, differentiating her sound from other jazz efforts in the indie music scene.

Snow Angel

Sofi De La Torre

Sofi de la Torre, the Spanish singer from the Canary Islands, shares her newest single, ‘Flex Your Way Out’ featuring multi-talented LA artist Blackbear, under the self-styled banner #PopDoneRight. The track finds the two singers mirroring their dreamy vocals over Finnish pop producer Jonas Karlsson’s soothing, trap-infused instrumental. Whilst Sofi del la Torre is exposing a darker and more introverted side, as she laments the end of a relationship, the overall feel is one of closure and optimism. The repeated refrain “go ahead and play with another, not me, I’m done” is delivered in such a manner as to project a sense of calm and control through the emotion. This is a powerful talent that is prevalent throughout her work, and has seen her credited already by The Guardian for the use for subtle restraint.

Resolutely independent, Sofi’s latest release provides an introverted perspective to her unique pop style. Performing under the banner of #PopDoneRight, she continues to stress how pop should be heartfelt, original and accessible. ‘Flex Your Way Out’ serves as an introduction for many and embodies the sound that Sofi has pioneered, whilst standing as a testament to her artistic growth in 2016.

Sofi explains how the collaboration came together on the latest single: “I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that our voices would sound great together, so I sent him a message after writing this track in Helsinki. He got back to me straight away with that killer verse & vocal and I’ve had it on repeat ever since!” Blackbear rose to fame as a co-writer on Justin Bieber’s 2012 hit ‘Boyfriend’. Since then the 25-year old producer has developed an intriguing musical persona – pursuing R&B and rap influences and working with hip-hop artists such as Childish Gambino and Machine Gun Kelly, as well as Pharrell and James Blake.

Following the success of Sofi’s track ‘Vermillion’, which was named “your gorgeously gloomy song of the summer” by TIME Magazine and the “game-changer pop song you need to embrace” by Billboard, ‘Flex Your Way Out’ serves as the perfect showcase of Sofi’s continued ability to craft hit records. With a currently untitled EP expected to follow, the anticipation has certainly been mounting since Sofi’s latest project, ‘Mess’, which debuted autumn 2015, and received praise across the board from Noisey to Pop Justice.

Silent Riders

This Copenhagen-based trio seem to have sprung from some murky unknown world, if we are to believe the statements of the band themselves. Little is known about Lu, Gee and C who comprise the group, or what is behind the masks they wear during their performances. They might have materialized from shadows in the woods, lurking in the dark until they were ready to share their sounds with the world. This mythical sphere that they have created for themselves is accessible through their music, which is a vision of electronic music that is organic and alive with both warmth and danger.

Led by the sultry voice of Lu, we are taken into the dark woods of the Silent Riders with almost cinematic brilliance as Gee and C mans the machines that weaves the atmospheric dronings of this world. A world that could be easily mistaken for one created by David Lynch or Tim Burton. The rhythms that form the path to this domain have been tried and tested by previous travellers, known to us by names like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire or Tolouse Lowtrax.

With the debut single “I See You” (coming out Jan 6th) they offer up a brilliant diamond of all the elements of their sound palette. With Lu in her most soulful PJ Harvey-esque voice, bouncing off of an almost funky dank drum machine, all drenched in layers of dark analog ambience. On the lush “Copenhagen Dream” we hear Lu channeling a sense of brit-pop nonchalance into a rather political song about the current state of her city. “Being Afraid” on the other hand, sees the band pull out their hardest and grittiest song. With Lu sounding like PJ Harvey at her most moody, the slow groove behind her sounds like a factory machine steadily beating away and releasing steam. Other highlights on their forthcoming album include the chilling “Static” and the ethereal beauty of closing track “Falling” which sees the Riders in their most relaxed and dreamy state, and echoes the works of Portishead and Massive Attack.

Abandoned By Bears

“’For The Sake Of Nothing’ is about how one action can change your perception of a person instantly, and how hard it is to tell that person how much they’ve changed in your eyes, explains bassist Gustav Eriksson. “Filming this video was a ton of fun. On our tour stop in Chicago, we travelled all around the city and did a lot of incredible stuff. We took in all the history, the different neighborhoods, and at one point we visited a real arcade which none of us had done before. Another treat was trying out the famous Chicago deep dish pizza which definitely was a different experience. The show itself was a nuthouse! A massive thank you to all the fans across the country that came out to see us, this video is for you.”

The Years Ahead, described by Alternative Press as ”Bright melodic pop punk tighter than David Lee Roth’s spandex,” is available now.

ABANDONDED BY BEARS will return to North America in early 2017, new dates will be announced soon.

After breaking through in the latter half of 2015 with his debut EP ‘Playground’ and being picked as a “Spotlight Artist” for Spotify, Coucheron has been keeping himself very busy. Having already produced tracks and featured on collaborations with Mayer Hawthorne, Charlie Puth and Nick Jonas, he also recently added his own remix for one of this year’s biggest hits, ‘Last Dance’ by Dua Lipa.

Perhaps even more impressively, the Norwegian featured and produced Kehlani’s ‘Alive’ as part of her 2015 Grammy nominated album ‘You Should Be Here’.

But now the 22-year-old is back working on his own material as he delivers his brilliant new double A-side single ‘Loud’/’Puzzled’. Much like his back catalogue so far, Coucheron isn’t one to be pigeonholed and both of these singles are just as eclectic as his other work to date.

The first ‘Loud’ shows his more contemporary side. With an infectious and well-layered rhythm, the track can be seen as a kin to the forward-thinking electronic music currently being produced by other artists such as Mura Masa and Flume.

While its sister single ‘Puzzled’ is a far more upbeat affair. With dancefloor-inspired direction, this high-energy track is more of a PC Music-meets-Garage tip with its nods to the 2-step culture and glossy pop eccentricities.

Nashville singer-songwriter & MTV’s The Real World cast member Davis Mallory releases debut original holiday single #BoxItUp written with Clayton Jones lead singer of The Madison Letter produced by Joshua Sudduth member of Relient K.

Calling All Astronauts

2016 has been another fantastic year for West London Electro Punks Calling All Astronauts. It has seen the release of their widely acclaimed second album “Anti-Social Network” Their single Empire hit #2 in the Official European Indie Chart, they’ve had two #1s in the Hype Machine Twitter Chart, they headlined the Bandstand Stage on the final night of Beautiful Days Festival. They have seen their Twitter following swell to over 500,000.

They round off the year with their ninth single, “Life As We Know It” released via Supersonic Media on Dec 23rd in which we see a more mellow, electronic side to these usually noisy rockers. The single is backed by three remixes and would you believe a “shuffle” video.

“We are not a band to release the same single over and over, yes they all sound like us, but we are very eclectic in our influences and I hope our music reflects this” David CAA

San Cisco

Since the release of 2015’s Gracetown, San Cisco have been busy writing and recording their 3rd studio album. Giving us a taste of the forthcoming album, the band unexpectedly gifted the world with the short and sweet track “B Side” in early October.

Now it’s time for “SloMo” the first official single – the A Side to the “B Side”. Singer Jordi Davieson said “SloMo was the first song we wrote as a band after Gracetown. We wanted to create a song that made people want to move”. The accompanying video shows the viewer just what to do when listening to the song – take note! “SloMo” and “B Side” can now be streamed and downloaded globally:

Awir Leon

Minimalist electronic composer and singer Awir Leon reveals ‘Falls’ the last of a trio of single visuals illustrating the debut LP ‘Giants’. Set to drop on 9th November 2016, the track will be released by pioneering label of the burgeoning Parisian beat-scene Nowadays Records.

Building layers from the most delicate percussive glitches into all consuming atmospheric textures, Awir Leon is fast proving himself as a master of intricate sonics. A sense of uncertainty is portrayed in his lyrics and is suitably matched by the sporadic synths and minimal percussion throughout. With this sound, comes a fitting, self-directed video that sees Awir undertaking a journey through the woods. At this point he is still caught in the forward motion of first single, ‘Maybe We Land’ but finds himself washed out and in a setting more reminiscent of second single ‘Sitting So High’, though this time closer to the ground. As he progresses on his journey he sheds his skin of clothes in an environment both old and new, changing and questioning colours.

Awir Leon is also a member of collaborative electro-pop trio UNNO, and both count celebrated Danish artist Sekuoia and the figurehead of emerging French electronic music Fakear amongst their label-mates on Parisian label Nowadays Records. The label continues to lead the French scene by championing innovative dance music that is at once experimental and accessible. ‘Falls’ stands as a shining example of this balance. Building on the success of ‘Sitting So High’ and ‘Maybe We Land’, Awir Leon’s latest single draws comparisons to the most avant-garde elements of acclaimed works by James Blake or Nicolas Jaar through his immersive production and vocal style.

With Awir Leon’s success as part of Kaltblut-approved ensemble UNNO, and the support from BBC Radio 1 on the lead single, ‘Falls’ marks the third and final window into Awir Leon’s audio-visual triptych, illustrating the fully immersive experience that is his ‘Giants’ LP, out now on Nowadays Records.

Tkay Maidza

Tkay Maidza today unleashes the official video for tropical dancefloor anthem “Simulation”; the second official single to be released from her debut album TKAY, which is out now via Downtown / Interscope Records.

The playful video, which premiered via Fader was filmed in Los Angeles during Tkay’s most recent US tour and directed by duo Lamar + Nik, who have created mini-movie music videos for the likes of the Pixies & Magnolia. The clip is a literal translation of the lyrics, capturing Tkay bouncing and singing her way through a simulated virtual world made up of projections of light and colour, her swagger and joyful approach encapsulating the energy and effervescence of herboisterous live show in the real world.

“Simulation” finds Maidza infusing melody-driven dance-pop with a sweet and tender soulfulness. Co-written by Tkay, along with her DJ and producer LK McKay and George Maple, Tkay says the track is about overcoming complacency and “hoping to find something real after everything that is calculated and planned disappears. It’s so common that people get lazy when they feel content because they have partially achieved their goals and are living the way they dreamt about, thus beginning to think it’ll last forever…. I have noticed that things constantly change, so when something doesn’t go to plan it’s like cracks in the simulation become visible.”

Zane Lowe selected “Simulation” as his “World Record” on Beats 1. The track has already reached over 1 million streams globally and in the Top 10 Shazam Future Hits chart. Today, Vevo announced that Tkay will be part of their dscvr “Ones To Watch,” featuring 20 artists they believe are poised to break out in 2017.

Dune Rats

Australian stoner-punk band Dune Rats has dropped new single Scott Green, the next taste of their upcoming 2017 album on Dine Alone Records, and the follow up to Bullshit, which was released earlier this year.

Scott Green sees the Brisbane-Sydney three piece stuck at a party wondering “Who’s Scott Green?” – if the joke hasn’t hit you yet, check out the boys’ Facebook page for more info. The single was produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR, who is on board for the whole album. Rumour has it, “Scott Green” will be home to another classic Dunies video – who knows what the boys have in store for this one, given their history of one-upping themselves with each new video?? The single is available now and will be followed shortly after by album release news.

The guys weighed in on how the single came to be: “We made Scott Green out at Joshua Tree in America with Zac from Fidlar. We had 5 days to write some songs in between tours in the US & UK and we busted out a fuck load of tunes having a blast in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. One day we went to ask people at Walmart if they “Scott Green?”…and it took all day. When we got back Zac said “you better have a fucken song after wasting a day looking for who’s got green. We just started making a song about the day – “Who’s Scott Green” – and that was it.”

It’s been a non-stop ride since Dune Rats released their self-titled debut album in 2014, which Rolling Stone (Australia) dubbed an “unassuming statement of intent. No bullshit punk done well.” From sold-out Australian tours including co-headlining with punk legends Cosmic Psychos, to festivals around the world, 40 shows throughout Europe with The Subways and a HUGE North American tour with besties FIDLAR, the band have had a stunning ascent so far, which shows no sign of stopping.

Kristin Hersh

Releasing her solo effort “Wyatt at the Coyote Palace” and related UK/Ireland and US tours and on the trail of her 50FOOTWAVE ‘Bath White’ EP release earlier this summer, trailblazing singer/songwriter and author Kristin Hersh is proving to be one of 2016’s most exciting acts.

She has unveiled the video for the first single “Soma Gone Slapstick”, created by Orrin Anderson with photography by Orrin Anderson and Ryder James. “I heard Soma move through seasons: fall on the rebound, a manic spring, a cruel winter, and through places: California, Chicago, New Orleans, a protest march in Koreatown. When I finished, it was dawn, my engineer and I had coffee and I walked home through fat flakes falling down instead of sideways. Goofy + falling + precise + muscular = soma with a healthy dose of slapstick,” says Kristin Hersh, who currently resides in Rhode Island.

“Wyatt at the Coyote Palace” is the third release in the ground-breaking book-CD format that Hersh began with her previous solo album “Crooked” and Throwing Muses’ 2013 release “Purgatory/Paradise”. Since sharing essays and tour diaries on her own website, she has published the critically acclaimed “Paradoxical Undressing” in the UK (released as “Rat Girl”in the USA), a children’s book “Toby Snax,” and “Don’t Suck, Don’t Die,” a personal account of her long friendship with the late Vic Chesnutt, which earned her rave reviews.

“Wyatt” is a collection of true stories and songs of love and loss, combining Hersh’s humor with the pains and travails of a life spent constantly in motion. Defined by potent guitars, addictive melodies and poignant lyrics, this release is a serious sign of strength and depth, bringing the listener into what the BBC calls Hersh’s “dark and dizzy world.”

Recorded in at her favorite studio in Portsmouth, RI with engineer Steve Rizzo at the helm, Hersh performs and creates all instruments and sounds on this 24-track opus, including guitar, bass, drums, piano, horns, cello and even field recordings. While the songs were written in the last 5 years over a turbulent period in her life, the prose was inspired by her son Wyatt, who is on the autism spectrum, and his fascination with an abandoned apartment building inhabited by coyotes. Wyatt often visited and even filmed the coyotes during the recording of the music, yet suddenly his intense fascination came to an end.

Hersh comments, “I had so loved his love of the place. Throwing Muses’ drummer, Dave – my best friend since third grade – decided that Wyatt needed to encapsulate his sense memories of the coyote palace, make the experience finite, like bottling a memory. Dave thinks we’ll see it again, and Wyatt’s love of the place will come back, when the images have been filtered through Wyatt’s intense and fascinating psychology.”

Jackson Dyer

Australian singer, songwriter and producer Jackson Dyer releases his Compartments EP), along with final single ‘Pariahs’. The single follows on from “Projection, Abstraction”, “The Absolute”, and “Steal Away”.

‘Pariahs’ is a song that questions how we can be so distant from each other, even of our neighbours, in an age of densely populated cities and social media. The most stripped back and folk – oriented song on the EP, it references Dyer’s previous works and focuses on lyrical imagery – Jackson Dyer.

Compartments is a distinct culmination of many months spent in the studio focusing on his songwriting and production.

‘Compartments’ is an EP of self-reflection that I wrote at a time when I faced a lot of uncertainty and questions about my place in the world. Far away from home, often spending long hours in my studio on the industrial outskirts of Berlin, it was a period of introspection when I experimented with production and songwriting. In this space, I wrestled with many of my misgivings about the music industry, the nature of humanity and my own personal motivations. The title ‘Compartments’ refers to the lyrics in ‘Pariahs’, which is about how close many people live to each other in cities and apartment blocks, but still lead very enclosed lives, unwilling to engage with even their neighbours. Ironically, I spent a long time in my own ‘Compartment’ writing these songs and it wasn’t until I collaborated with others that they really came alive.

Royal Canoe

Juno Award nominated Royal Canoe recently released sophomore album Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit.

In the video, a small boy awakes from a desolate, apocalyptic place. Directed by Emmy award-winning Dan Huiting, and shot in Manitoba’s Spirit Sand Desert and Bird’s Hill Park, we see the boy spin a bottle that seems to read “Passion” as it points directly forward into the unknown. The visuals are also spiritually soaked; a metaphor almost for keeping one’s head high during times of struggle.

“The video, performed by the eminently talented Anton Sokalski, follows the transformation of a young boy from marooned orphan to broadway star in his quest for water as he dances through the desert,” Royal Canoe tells Noisey. “We worked with Director Dan Huiting and Choreographer Kaja Irwin to create something that really focuses on the defiance of the character. The dance is his way of making a game out of the journey – coping with his plight by feigning confidence and bravado.”
