Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

30 Days In LA

Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days in LA ended with a bang on Monday night with hip hop royalty Nicki Minaj closing the festival with a special surprise appearance. The hip-hop and R&B superstar closed out 30 Days in LA as the secret guest for the final show at the Teragram Ballroom. In a jam-packed, hit-filled set, Minaj kicked off her heels and delivered a truly memorable closing set. Minaj, an artist used to headlining stadiums, took to the stage at the Teragram Ballroom, which has a capacity of only 600.

Sonny Digital, the Atlanta producer best known for his work on YC’s hit single “Racks”, opened up the night and warmed up the crowd. Sonny was followed up by Jazz Cartier, the Canadian rapper who was nominated on the Polaris Music Prize Long List this year for his album Marauding in Paradise and played several high-energy tracks

The evening encapsulated the past jam-packed month of special musical moments, from Big Sean’s commanding performance at the Hollywood Palladium to TV On The Radio being joined by special guest Miguel at the Theatre at Ace Hotel, Grimes debuting new material at the Mayan, BADBADNOTGOOD performing unreleased tracks with Future Island’s Sam Herring, and Soulection’s legendary dance party with special guest Wale at the Regent. Over 30 days and at 24 venues, LA music lovers were treated to performances from today’s hottest acts, including Flume, Foals, Joey Bada$$, Sylvan Esso, Vince Staples and many more. Red Bull Sound Select members showed up early and got to see breaking acts like BASECAMP, G Herbo, In The Whale, Nicole Dollanganger, Mick Jenkins and more.

In what has become a significant and can’t-miss festival for LA’s musical landscape, fans were treated to complimentary food upon arrival, including tacos, BBQ, sliders and more. Cookies baked by Homeboy Bakery were provided to attendees on their way out each night. Early arrivers were also gifted a slew of specialty items that were created in collaboration with the headlining artists, such as Toro Y Moi’s custom designed prayer candle, Lion Babe’s silk kimonos and snapbacks for Big Sean.

In addition to the incredible live music performances, Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days in LA continued its “off-night” programming for the second year. These events kicked off on night one with Wax on Wax, a vinyl pop-up event at Madame Tussauds featuring DJ sets from Sound Select curators and vinyl booths from multiple local indie record stores. Other events included a screening of High Fidelity, where guests received the first ever release of the soundtrack on vinyl by Record Store Day, on Thanksgiving, an Amoeba Music-hosted Club Vinyl complete with live vinyl pressing and a special in-store performance by soul singer Andra Day, and a BBQ at TuneIn studios featuring DJ Jason Bentley. There were also two high-energy dance parties with Soulection and the Do-Over, a special Thanksgiving edition of the iconic LA party The Left-Over where legendary producer Just Blaze headlined.

“It’s a musical manifestation of the circle-pit experience: Gemma Thompson’s gnarly, gnashing riff powers the dizzying circular motion, Ayşe Hassan’s full-contact basslines leave bruises, while Fay Milton’s kit-toppling rhythm conjures that feeling of being constantly on the run but never quite finding your feet” -Pitchfork (Best New Track)

Following the announcement of their highly anticipated second album, Adore Life, Savages have unveiled new track “T.I.W.Y.G.,” another unflinching musical attack. Adore Life will be released on January 22nd 2016 on Matador Records.Renowned for their brutal and spellbinding live shows, the band will return stateside in March and April 2016 for a run of headlining tour dates. Savages’ second album, Adore Life, was recorded at RAK Studios, London in April 2015. Johnny Hostile was the producer and Richard Woodcraft the engineer. Anders Trentemøller took care of the mixing in Copenhagen.

All songs were written and played by Savages – Ayşe Hassan (bass), Fay Milton (drums), Gemma Thompson (guitar), Jehnny Beth (vocals). Lyrics by Jehnny Beth.

It’s about change and the power to change. It’s about metamorphosis and evolution. It’s about sticking to your guns and toughing it out. It’s about now, not tomorrow. It’s about recognizing your potential. It’s about self-doubt and inaction. It’s about you. It’s about me. It’s about you and me and the others. It’s about the choices we make. It’s about finding the poetry and avoiding the cliché. It’s about being the solution, not the problem. It’s about showing weakness to be strong. It’s about digging through your dirt to look for diamonds. It’s about claiming your right to think unacceptable thoughts. It’s about boredom and the things we do to drive it away. It’s about being on your own so you can be with people. It’s about knowing what it means to be human and what it might mean one day. It’s about the parts and the sum of the parts. It’s about the music and the message: together, one and the same. It’s about bass, guitars, drums, and vocals. It’s about opening-out and never, ever dying. But most of all it’s about love, every kind of love. Love is the answer.

Del Water Gap

After spending most of 2015 garnering buzz in the live arena, playing Bowery Ballroom and two Communion Music Showcases, Brooklyn-based alt-folk group Del Water Gap are readying the release of a new split 7”. The trio consisting of band founder S. Holden Jaffe (lead vocals, guitars, harmonica), Charles Schlinkert (drums, percussion), and William Evans (bass, piano, background vocals) will share singles “Cut The Rope,” recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks, and “Lamplight” with a limited run of vinyl copies.

Initially started in 2011 as the solo project of Jaffe, Del Water Gap came together following the release of a debut, self-titled EP. After relocating to New York City’s East Village, Jaffe would link up formally with Schlinkert and Evans in the powerless wake of Hurricane Sandy. In 2014, Del Water Gap released Sleeping, their first EP as a full band. This would eventually lead to extensive touring by the group and further press attention including Artist of the Month honors with The Deli.

“Cut The Rope” and “Lamplight” mark a significant sonic step forward for Del Water Gap, with their authentic, classic, modern traditionalist aesthetic ever present in both songs’ heart. As the band frequently shares, “In this wide and perilous all-too-big world, Del Water Gap would like to thank you for being close.”

“Lamplight” recently premiered with Pancakes and Whiskey who said, “The song is pure and earthy the whole way through, as the chorus booms with power and lyrical imagery…this song leaves you feeling warm inside and out, as the weather continues to get colder.”

Be sure to stream “Lamplight” and look for the premiere of “Cut The Rope” on November 30th.

Wrathrone plays brutal old school death metal with their own spices. Early years 2008-2011 Wrathrone was doing gigs in slow flow, though the first self-released EP “Burning Hatred” saw the daylight in 2011. The second self-released EP “Left Unburied” was out in 2013. From the year 2013 Wrathrone did gigs more and more, and now they have done over 30 aggressive death metal shows altogether.

Wrathrone was stomping over the Baltics in 2013 and year 2014 Germany met their destiny. The year 2015 has been busy and 2016 will be even more so.

“Born Beneath” was recorded in great conditions of V.R. Studio in Turku, in Jussi Vuola’s hands. Inverse Records will release the debut album in January 22nd 2016.

1. Born Beneath
2. Age of Decadence
3. Eternal Salvation
4. Failing flesh, enduring spirit

Bloodlash was founded in late 2011. Formed in Morelia, México when the rule of thumb leaned towards thoughtless violence, and dedication and creativity marked the exception, Bloodlash began as an act of rebellion within that context. While Bloodlash’s music displays aggression, they try their hardest to make it a force for creation and to build awareness rather than for the mere purpose of aimless destruction.

One could describe Bloodlash as Progressive Post-Metal, but the label hardly does justice to the experiment. Their directive is to always challenge themselves as musicians and artists, trying to make well-crafted music that feels fresh. Playing in-your-face energetic live shows, the plan is to challenge indifference and inspire others in the same way that the bands and idols they grew up with inspired them. Bloodlash feeds from the influence of bands like The Ocean, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Karnivool, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Opeth, Dog Fashion Disco, Intronaut, Ghost, Children of Bodom and various Soundtracks. Having received encouraging reviews from media outlets such as MetalSucks regarding the future of Bloodlash, and receiving comparisons to Between the Buried and Me, they have all the fire within and the dedication to their craft to get far.

Bloodlash continues cooperation with a Finnish label Inverse Records, having successfully released their debut EP “Drowning Amidst The Nebulae” in 2014. Rain EP is released digitally December 21st 2015.

Omar LinX, Hunter Siegel and Pro Logic

Every once in a while, there’s a song that transforms your surroundings to a special time and place. A song whose fleeting chords tingle each and every sense – filling you with inexplainable raw emotion. It’s then a special connection an Artist gains with their listener – creating a vessel one can time travel back to what was once seemed as a long-distant memory. It’s a combination of passion from the artist in each passing verse, relating to the listener – and this is what Omar LinX achieves in “Back To You”, available now for purchase via Beatport, iTunes, and Spotify. Between Omar’s fervent words and the sweet, light play of melodic synths and powerful chords presented by Hunter Siegel and Pro Logic, “Back To You” takes you on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster.

Be on the lookout of a special remix package presented by Algo, Dabow, Axel Boy, LUMBERJVCK, Kname, and 12th Planet out December 18th.

Cape Town, South Africa electro-hiphop outfit DOOKOOM presents the music video for “Dirty”, directed by South African photographer Pieter Hugo, who says the video is about “the lack of acknowledgment in the coloured [mixed black/white South Africans] community of the homosexual nature of [South African] prison gangs.” The song appears on Silbi Dog, their new EP featuring David Banner (listen on Soundcloud to the David Banner-assisted single “The Worst Thing”), out now thanks to a partnerships between French labels I.O.T. and Atypeek. DOOKOOM first gained notoriety when South African white civil rights organization AfriForum lobbied the South African Human Rights Commission to ban their 2014 single “Larney, Jou Poes” (watch the video on Youtube), the title of which translates in their native language Afrikaans to “Hey Boss, Fuck You”. The video depicts black South African farm workers rebelling against their white bosses, reflecting the racial tensions that exist to this day in a country where white people continue to own almost everything while many black South Africans work for less than $5 a day. DOOKOOM is headed by rapper Isaac Mutant, who raps in a mixture of English, Afrikaans and Sabela (a language developed in South African prisons) and appeared on fellow South African group Die Antwoord’s first album. Vocalist L i L i † H, producer Human Waste, visual Artist Spo0ky and DJ Roach round the band out. “Dirty” director Pieter Hugo’s photography has appeared in the MOMA, Tate Modern and the Getty Museum. DOOKOOM is preparing a new album for 2016.
