M for Montreal

M POUR MONTRÉAL is thrilled to announce the final additions to its 2015 programming. New additions include Jazz Cartier, Hudson Mohawke, Chocolat, Dead Obies, Duchess Says, and We Are Wolves. For the full list of programming click here. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the upcoming edition won’t disappoint. M will gather 200+ of the most influential music industry representatives from 15 countries, presenting over 100 local and international talents in over 20 venues across the city from November 18th to the 21st.

“It’s hard to believe we are already in our 10th year! Looking back to 2006, where we had seven bands playing in two venues showcasing for a dozen European promoters including Glastonbury booker Martin Elbourne, it is pretty astounding to see the growth our festival has achieved”, remembers the co-founder and president of M for Montreal, Sébastien Nasra. “I never could have imagined… but the fact remains that M now has a prominent place in the music industry event calendar, and continues to make Montreal an influential hotspot and synonymous with musical creativity.”

The M 2015 kick off event at Rialto Theatre on November 18th will feature simultaneous performances on the venue’s three separate stages. The opening celebrations will bring ten acts together, including The Franklin Electric, Milk & Bone and Elliot Maginot. On Thursday November 19th M for Montreal is pleased to once again present the SiriusXM CONCERT, benefiting the Garage à musique de la Fondation du Dr Julien, with performances by Plants and Animals, Foreign Diplomats and more. Additional showcasing artists include Busty and the Bass, The Dears, Duchess Says, Pomo, Dilly Dally, and Loud Lary Ajust, with Grimes closing the festival to a sold out Metropolis on November 21st.

As part of it’s 10th anniversary celebrations, M for Montréal is proud to collaborate with John Londoño to present SNAPSHOT SESSIONS. This series celebrates music and art with photographs of local and international talents. With SNAPSHOT SESSIONS Londoño gives you exclusive backstage access to artists that have performed in Montreal. Co-presented by the Phi Centre and Lozeau, the exhibition will run from November 20th to December 12th at Phi Centre.

Big Grams

Big Grams self-titled debut album is out now on Epic Records.

Austin, TX cult noise rock kings, Cherubs have premiered a new single “Fist In The Air”. The song comes as a follow-up to the band’s first album in 20 years, 2 Ynfynyty which was released earlier this year via Brutal Panda Records. Both the single and album were produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, ….And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Slayer). 2 Ynfynyty can be streamed via Bandcamp here.

About Cherubs:
Formed in 1992 by Ed Hall, expatriate drummer Kevin Whitley (vocals/guitar), Owen McMahon (bass), and Brent Prager (drums), the Cherubs emerged on the Austin, TX, LSD punk scene with a jackhammer of nightmarish, rhythm-driven song structures and plenty of Butthole Surfers whimsy and terror to keep things more than interesting. Later that year, King Koffey of the Butthole Surfers released the band’s first album, Icing, on his Trance Syndicate label. Icing proved a strange concoction of repetitive, hypnotic beats, frosted with Kevin Whitley’s high-pitched howl. In 1993, the band issued the Carjack Fairy single, each of the thousand pressed sleeved in a different piece of wallpaper samples; an interesting concept, and one certainly not alien to the musical climate of Austin, TX. By the time the band’s magnum opus, Heroin Man, was issued in 1994, the Cherubs had called it quits, leaving a hell of an album in its wake, one of the most distorted, red-lined, oddball noise rock records ever made. Two years later, Trance released Short of Popular, a collection of singles, odds and ends, and outtakes from previous sessions.

Fast forward 20 years later and the band has reformed with more energy and songwriting acumen then ever. 2 Ynfynyty is poised to be the band’s defining statement and is sure to give old fans and new fans alike the ultimate noise rock fix.

J. Stalin

J. Stalin isn’t backing down- today he’s releasing a hard-hitting visual for “Face Shots,” which is off his forthcoming album, Tears Of Joy, slated to release on October 30th. In “Face Shots,” which premiered via East Bay Express, the MC cements his status as a Bay Area legend with his prolific rhymes and crew by his side. With features from Iamsu!, Riff Raff, Snow Tha Product, Mistah F.A.B., The Jacka, Rayven Justice, D-Lo, B-Legit, and Jonn Hart, Tears of Joy is bringing a reinvigorated J. Stalin back to the scene.

Stalin explained to East Bay Express that he wrote the lyrics after his friend survived a gunshot to the face. “I haven’t done a song like this in a long time, but where we’re at in Oakland, we need it,” he explained. “The rest of the world needs to know there’s a lot of shit going on in Oakland. How are we gonna go overseas and fight wars if we can’t fix our cities?”

Earlier this month, J. Stalin announced the album while sharing his Damon Jamal-directed visual for “Bye Felicia,” which has him ducking his old flame Lil Debbie while laid up in bed with his new girl. Tears of Joy will follow SID: Shining in Darkness, adding to his collection of over a dozen mixtapes he’s released over the past 8 years. In a review of the album, XXL said “J. Stalin pushes the envelope by vividly reiterating his Mob Bay Area persona and turmoil of his harsh upbringing,” adding, “Shining In Darkness is easily considered one of J. Stalin’s most cultivating yet.” Hailing from West Oakland, J. Stalin has long been one of the Bay Area’s most respected artists. In 2007, he signed to Zoo Entertainment Production Company run by artist Mekanix. He is also the Owner of Livewire Records and the President of Town Thizzness ENT, which is a sub-division of the late Mac Dre’s Thizz ENT. Stay tuned for Tears Of Joy, which releases October 30th, 2015.

Two Fresh

Identical twin brothers and production duo from Nashville, TN, Two Fresh, announce their new Torch EP set to drop October 27 via Mad Decent. The project features explosive collaborations with Vic Mensa, Joey Purp, Curtis Williams and Jace of Atlanta’s Two-9, Mac Miller’s signee, singer Njomza and more. Their most accessible work to date, the EP showcases their undeniable ability to blend dance music and rap effortlessly.

After leaving their roles as national ranked tennis doubles during their youth, the brothers began making deeply experimental music and quickly entered the hip hop space soon after. They have already produced for Mac Miller, Vic Mensa, Towkio, Cherub, The Underachievers and many more. Newly relocated to Los Angeles, the pair joined the rising creative collective, Team Supreme. They will be jumping on tour with TOKiMONSTA shortly after their EP release.

Judith Hill

The acclaimed singer/songwriter Judith Hill’s soul, funky, jazz-infused debut album, Back In Time, will be released through NPG Records on October 23. The New York Times’ Press Play is streaming it exclusively in the week leading up to its release. Listen here! Hill co-produced the album with multi-platinum icon Prince, who invited her to his Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis after seeing an interview with Judith in which she named him as her dream collaborator.

“Back In Time has a vintage-soul feel, with jazz shadings and a powerful dose of post-Ferguson social commentary,” said Rolling Stone. Elle praised the album as “an inspirational amalgam of pleading soul, pop, and mixed-rhythm beats enriched with her roof-rattling vocals” while the Star Tribune praised Hill’s “world-class voice.” “Back In Time represents the struggle of aspiring to heights unknown, with nothing to break your fall but a steadfast trust in a higher power,” observed NPR, which featured “Angel in the Dark” as one of their “Songs We Love.” You can check out Judith’s NPR “Weekend Edition” interview with Lourdes Garcia-Navarro HERE.

Hill, who opened for Prince on his spring 2015 tour, duets with him on “Million $ Show,” the lead-off track on his new album, HITNRUN Phase One, which was recently released via TIDAL. She won a GRAMMY® earlier this year when the Morgan Neville-directed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom was honored as Best Music Film. The film, which also won an Oscar, shines the spotlight on the untold true story of singers like Hill and co-stars Darlene Love, Merry Clayton and Lisa Fischer, who have backed some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Judith has supported such artists as the late Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Josh Groban. She was a contestant on season four of “The Voice.” Hill, who wrote her first song when she was only four years old, comes from a musical family. Her mother, a classical pianist from Japan, and her father, a funk bass player, both played with Sly Stone, Chaka Khan, Rufus and many more artists.

The Muscadettes

A signature of the lovely twin sisters Kathleen and Chantal Ambridge who hail originally from California’s Silicon Valley but were raised in Montreal, The Muscadettes’ unique sound is made of all-time North American underground sounds, tainted by 60’s surf music, full of reverb and fuzz, driven by the 80’s “garage revival” energy and the light hearted pop of twee rock, and influenced with some drops of grunge and groovy power pop.

Following a highly praised first EP, Side A, which earned the band a solid reputation and led to its being featured more than once as “one of the most promising Canadian artists,” The Muscadettes is finally revealing its new awaited EP, the wisely titled Side B.

From the very first chords of “Earthquake,” the album’s first single—premiered by the renowned American blog Consequence of Sound—, the scene is set. The band has turned up the heat with roaring distorted guitars, powerful drums, memorable keyboard riffs, a catchy chorus, and lusty vocals, together creating an overwhelming, moody sound that is rich in textures and images. This intoxicating sound doesn’t let up over the album’s six tracks, from the abrasive intro of “My Baby Boy” to the hypnotizing, soft-weird melody of “Stray Cats,” and the irresistible “West Coast Daze” track. It is easy to say that this record will resonate for a long time in the cities’ streets.
