Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

Summer Series

Remember those awkward school discos with the teacher’s favorite 80s classics on repeat? Those days are over. The Playground Sounds revolution is here.

In what could possibly be the coolest thing to hit schools since Sunnyboy Ice Blocks, some of the buzziest names in Australian (and international) music are heading back to where it all began, playing schoolyard sets across the nation this summer. From October, Jake Stone (Bluejuice), Just a Gent, KLP, The Aston Shuffle and even Zia from The Dandy Warhols are among those who will DJ at lucky schools as part of a one-of-a-kind silent disco for students.

The whole shebang is thanks to Playground Sounds, a brand new health and wellbeing program that encourages students to get moving through the use of silent disco headsets. Busting out a unique mini festival experience for students from ages 5-18, Playground Sounds also offers a unique incentive for kids to exercise. Tracking movement with the use of a wireless heart rate monitor around the student’s wrist, it records individual student activity and also provides real time updates on the student’s intensity during the program.

She Rocks Compilation

Who says the ladies can’t rock? Today Favored Nations Entertainment announces the upcoming release of the all-female compilation, She Rocks, Vol.1. This collection of kick-ass guitar goddesses is produced by author and former Guitar World editor, Brad Tolinski with iconic guitarist Steve Vai as executive producer, and showcases eleven female guitarists, each a virtuoso in her own right. From the legendary Lita Ford to Sarah Longfield’s jazzy riffin’, to Orianthi’s melodic stylings and the all-out shredding of Nita Strauss, these players each contribute their own voice to this carefully curated collection.

She Rocks, Vol.1 compilation will be released on January 20, 2017 via Vai’s own Favored Nations Label, and in cooperation with the Women’s International Music Network (, hosts of the famed “She Rocks Awards.” The compilation will be celebrated at the 2017 “She Rocks Awards,” taking place that evening in Anaheim, CA during the annual NAMM Convention.

These shredding songstresses cover the stage when it comes to style and personality; Ford is the quintessential guitar rock goddess with decades of top shelf performances, Jennifer Batten made her name playing for Michael Jackson, Strauss has toured with Alice Cooper for the past year, and the list goes on!

Red Fang

RED FANG, who released Only Ghosts October 14 via Relapse Records, has just premiered an in-depth album commentary video via Heavy Blog. The video covers all aspects of the album process, from personal elements to producer influence, and includes a thorough track-by-track walkthrough of the album by the band.

Los Angeles, California Hard Rock band VYCES have announced that they will coheadline the HELLRZZR Tour sponsored by HELLRZZR Clothing with Las Vegas, Nevada band Invidia this fall. The tour kicked off on October 18th in Los Angeles, California, will make its way to the midwest, and then conclude in Sacramento, California at The Boardwalk.

After recently premiering their video for their single “DEVIL” from the band’s upcoming debut EP due out October 20, 2016 that was produced by Augustus Cryns (Stitched Up Heart, XO Stereo, The Dead Rabbits and Westfield Massacre) on VEVO, VYCES is ready to hit the road on a coheadlining US run with Invidia and White Knuckle Riot in support.

VYCES frontman Dave Naruszewicz comments, “We are extremely excited for the opportunity to be heading out on The HELLRZZR Tour with the super heavy and talented INVIDIA and White Knuckle Riot. We’ve been working really hard over the past three years putting VYCES together. It’s an amazing feeling to see this beast finally come to life. We are really looking forward to seeing familiar faces, and making new fans along the way. We’ll see you all on the road!!”

Death metal legends OBITUARY return with Ten Thousand Ways To Die, a special two-song single containing a pair of brand new studio tracks plus a bonus live set of twelve classics and fan favorites from the band’s storied catalog! Recorded in eleven different cities during the band’s highly successful 2015 Inked In Blood world tour, the live tracks capture the incredible performances of a band that has stood atop the death metal pantheon for almost 30 years. Ten Thousand Ways To Die is sure to satisfy new and die-hard OBITUARY fans and will quench the bloodthirst of listeners until the band’s new album drops in Spring 2017.

Lupa J

Traveling from one impressive feat to the next, Lupa J has already earned her colours among many in 2016 and today adds more flair with a carefully curated remix EP. Following support spots with Grimes in Sydney, Sarah Blasko on her national tour and Tegan and Sara’s Splendour sideshows, Lupa J went on to launch her sophomore EP ‘My Right Name’ with her first headline shows.

Exploring and extending her production abilities in the studio with a focus on remixes, Lupa J’s first remix, ‘The Thaw’ by Woodes, was acclaimed by OWSLA blog, Nest HQ, as ‘brilliant and outlandish’. Her developing musical aesthetic underpins this new EP of diverse and adventurous remixes she has curated from friends and respected musicians Marcus Whale, OK Sure and Elkkle, as well as Lupa J live band members, Nathan Moas (Land Systems) and Mara Schwerdtfeger (mara).

From Land Systems’ driving industrial take on ‘Game’ to Elkkle’s idiosyncratic warmth bringing new life to ‘Teeth and Loud Talk’, the EP showcases an astonishing range of talent and style united by the material they are responding to. The My Right Name Remix EP is a testament to the camaraderie and depth of the young talent emerging into the Australian electronic music scene today.

Feel Freeze

Danish electro-pop duo going by the name of Feel Freeze are set to break waves in the UK whilst continuing their successful rise back in Denmark. Scandinavian music is a treasure trove for new talent and Feel Freeze are the perfect example of this, following in the footsteps of the likes of The Knife and Lykke Li- there are big things coming for this dreamy pop pair. The duo consisting of Mathias Vinther Liholt and Raymonde Gaunoux have received praise for their memorable live performances, supporting the likes of Thomas Dybdahl and Cymbals Eat Guitars. This included GAFFA raving about the band’s performance, that they deliver “so much musical energy, that they can barely contain it”.

Their latest self produced single, Wet My Tongue, was mixed by Peter Iverson and mastered by Anders Schumann (Medina). The track is very sonically interesting- not only does it have dreamy, electro-pop elements including dry electronic beats of The XX, but the use of an acoustic guitar introduces a folk feel, completely setting it apart from others in its genre. Vocally, we can hear hints of Grouplove, whilst the use of synth gives it a retro feel. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things, you’ll totally hear the eerie 80’s influence in there.

Following consistent props from triple j and the blogosphere for their previous track ‘Dreamstate’, Melbourne natives Stonefox today announce impending new single ‘Hands Of Gold’ and a subsequent six-date launch tour across four states.

Ethereal and delicate, but nudged assuredly forward by a driving back-beat, ‘Hands of Gold’ is as ambrosial as its birthplace. Seeding in the pastel confines of a tiny, hand-painted caravan named Monty, ‘Hands of Gold’ began its charmed life as a groove jam. In the studio of Jean-Paul Fung (Last Dinosaurs, Snakadaktal), it finally blossomed into the anthem of heartbreak and hope that Stonefox had envisioned from the very start.

Stonefox know what it is to begin with a bang. Their debut EP ‘Surface’ exceeds 3.5 million plays on Spotify, they recently supported triple j favorites Mosquito Coast nationally, and they already have the ears of international tastemakers Majestic Casual and Mr Suicide Sheep. With ‘Hands of Gold’, the trio prove themselves capable of not only meeting the high bar set for them, but of catapulting over it with the slickness of a much older band.

The Shrives

Let The Shrives take you into the twisted world of their local Grantham nightlife with their low-fi, sexually confused video for new single ‘Madnight’, just released this October.

After being tipped off by his son Joey, Green Day frontman Billie-Joe Armstrong invited the band over to his Jingletown Studios in Oakland, California, to lay down their debut album ‘Back In The Morrow’. The resulting 11-track record features Joey on drums, was produced by Billie Joe and recorded by Grammy Award-winning engineer Chris Dugan (U2, Green Day, Iggy Pop). The Green Day frontman even played bass on part of the album.

On playing drums for the album, Joey Armstrong explained “Working on this project was super rad for me. I’m a musician who wants to be in the studio and I got lucky with Matt and Josh [both of The Shrives] who both write killer songs. I learned the songs in the studio right before we recorded and it felt natural. These songs have influences from older bands and I listened to a lot of Elvis Costello’s drummer Pete Thomas to get a vibe for what I wanted to do. I’m really excited with how they turned out and can’t wait for people to hear them.”

After streaming their first single ‘Turn Me On’ via soundcloud, the band racked up thousands of plays and their presence grew with write-ups in Kerrang!, Rock Sound and NME. With the release of their debut music video ‘When Did You Get Home?’, the 4-piece were then featured as one of ‘The World’s Hottest New Bands’ by Kerrang! Magazine, with radio support coming from the likes of BBC Introducing and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music.

With the release of their new single ‘Madnight’ – through Gary Powell of The Libertines label, 25 Hour Convenience Store – the Grantham-based 4-piece are looking set to become one of 2017’s brightest UK rock bands.

Following up on their debut, self-titled LP, NJ-based indie-rockers NGHTCRWLRS are now readying their sophomore effort, Raging Hot, out November 11th, 2016 via Sniffling Indie Kids. Although the actual formation of the NGHTCRWLRS can be tangibly placed in 2014, Frank DeFranco (guitar/vox), Brian Goglia (bass/vox), Eric Goldberg (guitar, vox) and Max Rauch (drums, vox) have known each other for years having gigged out as a part of other bands in the various tri-state scenes. Following the demise of their various other projects, fate would bring the quartet together through various jam sessions that immediately signaled a natural chemistry.

With a couple of short tours under their belts following the release of their debut, NGHTCRWLRS quickly got back into the studio at the start of 2016 with a fresh batch of songs bristling with incendiary energy and urgency. Like the first record, the Raging Hot was recorded by Rauch in the band’s practice space and mixed/mastered by longtime pal Jeremy Cimino.

To celebrate the release of Raging Hot, NGHTCRWLRS embark on a series of weekend tours detailed below. Be on the lookout for more from NGHTCRWLRS in the coming weeks, including the official release of Raging Hot on November 11th, 2016.

Vinegar Mother

Having made a name for themselves in the NYC live DIY music scene, progressive soul outfit Vinegar Mother are now gearing up to unveil their debut EP, The Sunny Seat, due out November 18th. In advance of the EP, Vinegar Mother released a video for soulful single “Sunny Seat,” which you can watch here. The cathartic tune narrates the troubled innermind of the protagonist, played by front woman Julia Zivic, while she tries to cope with heartbreak and encounters various reminders of her loss along the way. Ironically enough, the tune started out as a journal entry of Zivic’s, as she explains, “I was writing on the subway after a bad falling out with one of my longest best friends.” As the G train went over the Gowanus Canal bridge and the sun hit her directly in the face, Zivic was comforted by its warmth, however the unbearable feeling of loss lingered and the song began to pour out.

In 2012 in their home state of Connecticut, founding members Julia Zivic (lead vocals), Itamar Gov-Ari (keys, guitar and vocals) and Jason Zivic (drums) began performing together under the moniker, Julia Zivic & The Brothers. As the music experimentation expanded and the group changed pace, the three decided to start a new project including Zack Slaughter on bass and Chris Stelluti on saxophone. Together, the quintet recorded the band’s debut EP, but shortly after Slaughter joined the Marines and current bassist Mike Roninson entered the mix. Exuding a natural chemistry born out of their eclectic musical backgrounds, Vinegar Mother, attributes their unique sound to the open minded and relaxed songwriting approach, tackled as a union with all members bringing ideas to the table. The band currently performs as a quartet, as the core members continue to explore and construct their sound.

Under Julia Zivic & The Brothers, the band had the opportunity to share the stage with Dr. Dog, George Clinton, Santana and Buddy Guy at the Greenwich Town Party Festival in May 2014. Julia Zivic & The Brothers also participated that year in the International TalentHouse Jimi Hendrix Competition, where they placed 2nd with their rendition of “Red House.” As Vinegar Mother, the group has played numerous shows at Brooklyn’s legendary Knitting Factory, The Studio at Webster Hall and are regularly invited to play SoFar Sounds showcases throughout the city. Last year, Vinegar Mother played CMJ and opened for notable touring acts such as The Lonely Biscuits, Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band as well as Joanna Teters & Mad Satta.

The Sunny Seat is due out November 18th, with a special limited cassette release coming March 2017 via Invertebrate Records.

The Loft Club

Introducing The Loft Club, purveyors of stomping, heartfelt, sixties tinged indie rock, with their debut music video “Heart’s Desire”, directed by Alice Deuchar. Consisting of Daniel Schamroth, Jamie Whyte, Kieran Chalmers and Amy O’Loughlin, The Loft Club are a brand new British band, hailing from Exeter, Devon. Comparisons range from Buffalo Springfield, Fleetwood Mac and The Byrds through to Ryan Adams and Noel Gallagher, a broad sonic palette unified by soaring harmonies and singalong choruses.

The Loft Club released their debut EP on October 14th, also entitled ‘Heart’s Desire’, the 4-track EP is available now at all digital retailers via Lightyear Entertainment/Caroline/Universal Music. The EP was recorded with producer Jolyon Holroyd at Valvetastic Studios, and mixed in LA by Kevin Dippold.

The band’s debut album is due for release in 2017.

Danish two piece band Arrow originates from two different sides of the Copenhagen music scene, but come together in their affection for well-written, melodic, alternative pop.

With its minimalistic production, moving vocals and nordic noir, ‘The Maze’ marks their first single as a duo. Mixed by Swedish legendary engineer Lasse Mårthén (Lykke Li, Peter, Bjorn and John), ‘The Maze’ is a haunting, dark pop song that stays with you long after it’s over. The video for ‘The Maze’ is filmed by Danish artist and photographer Josefine Seifert. Staged in New York, the video features the mysterious artist Liz on a moving journey through the city. Through Josefine’s grainy lense, the song comes to life.

Del Water Gap

After a year spent writing, recording and performing, Brooklyn-based alt-folk group Del Water Gap are now readying the release of a new single, “Vanessa.” The trio consisting of band founder S. Holden Jaffe (lead vocals, guitars, harmonica), Charles Schlinkert (drums, percussion), and William Evans (bass, piano, background vocals) shared “Vanessa” on October 21st, 2016 ahead of a new EP due out in early 2017.

Lily & Madeline

Clash Music released the video in the UK ahead of Lily & Madeleine’s upcoming tour dates supporting Dawes at the beginning of November. The duo is currently rounding out a very extensive U.S. tour with Brett Dennen throughout the rest of October and leading directly into their UK appearances. Please see below for full tour details.

Keep It Together, the prolific pair’s third full-length album since forming in 2012, is the sound of Lily (19) and Madeleine (22) asserting themselves as young women and very much coming in to their own as they learn to navigate adulthood and all that comes with it. The album released to rave reviews in February with NPR Music exclaiming, “The harmonies from these Indiana-based sisters have always been outstanding. But now on their third album, Keep It Together, Lily and Madeleine have added more texture to their songs,” adding, “What are they going to be doing in 10 years if this is where they are already. That’s incredible.” Rookie Magazine called the album “emotionally vibrant” and remarked about the sisters’ renewed musical outlook stating the record is “built from the desire to be taken seriously and the knowledge that comes with becoming an adult in the world.” Entertainment Weekly hailed album standout “Hourglass” as a “musical dreamscape” in their premiere of the kaleidoscopic video. Under the Radar declared, “In under 40-minutes, Lily & Madeleine prove there’s still beauty in the world, and that sisterly love, coupled naturally with evolving talent, can make for an impressively powerful album,” while Paste lauded the “liquid visuals” orchestrated by director George Salisbury (The Flaming Lips) in the “dreamy pop video” for the guitar-heavy “For The Week.” Uncut enthused, “Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz’s exquisite harmonies and gentle melodies are still present and correct, though here they venture beyond their initial ‘70s folk sound. ‘Not Gonna,’ ‘Westfield,’ and ‘Hourglass’ shimmer with gentle orchestral soul, while the guitar-driven ‘For The Weak’ is both laconic and robust, like Sleater-Kinney without the spikes. The added muscle suits them… Keep It Together is a work of serious, subtle beauty.”

Recorded at home in Bloomington, IN with producer Paul Mahern, who also helmed Lily & Madeleine’s lauded debut and sophomore albums, the 10-song record is a mature and dynamic statement from two distinct musical personalities, grounded and bound by kinship, that melds seamlessly into an ethereal and enthralling collection. With the help of friends and touring band members Shannon Hayden and Kate Siefker, Lily & Madeleine take their songs into exciting new territory.

Honey Lung

Hotly tipped grunge newcomers Honey Lung are set to release their new 5-track EP ‘Kind Of Alone’ on November 11th 2016. Released through RYP Recordings, the new EP follows swiftly on from their recent single ‘End Of Time’, another dizzyingly explosive track from Honey Lung, having only just released their excellent debut single ‘Something’ earlier this summer, which quickly won the trio support from the likes of BBC Introducing, The Line of Best Fit, Metro, and put them in the studio for a Radio X session.

Produced by Michael Smith (Wolf Alice, Kid Wave, Anteros) and weaving the nineties grunge and shoegaze of Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine with the more contemporary tones of Yuck and War on Drugs, Honey Lung are already looking like a force to be reckoned with. ‘Kind Of Alone’ will be released on November 11th 2016 through RYP Recordings and features the singles ‘End Of Time’ and ‘Something’ which are out now. Honey Lung will also perform select dates this October and November, including an EP launch party at London’s Lock Tavern on November 15th.

The music of Oblomov arises from contaminations from both experimental rock and synth pop, among sounds taken from the street and from the television.A television, an old model from the 50’s, can be said to be a real third member of the band, starring also live in the livingroom-like environments of the shows. The device transmits audio and videos prepared by the controversial video-artist Flavio Sciolè. Oblomov played a 20 gigs tour, started in Berlin, to promote the previous full-length “Sould of the soul”, and the new, free “Multiexit” is a special gift for old and new fans.
