Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Friday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

30 Days in LA

LA, it’s almost that time again! Peep the lineup above and get tix for the November shows HERE!

Beastie Boys

The 30th Anniversary LP edition of Beastie Boys’ debut album Licensed To Ill will be released on October 14 via Def Jam/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. This special reissue was cut from the original production masters and is presented on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.

Produced by Rick Rubin and Beastie Boys, Licensed To Ill was originally released November 15, 1986–making the B Boys the fifth artist to release a full length album on the original Def Jam label after LL Cool J, Slayer, Tashan and Oran “Juice” Jones.

“The Breakthrough of ‘Licensed To Ill’ in 1986 paved the road legitimizing Rap to its USA masses, and set the barometer worldwide on the genre album format. This record also expanded Hip Hop diversity allowing Public Enemy’s ‘It Takes A Nation…’ to be its antithesis.” — Chuck D, Public Enemy

Licensed To Ill continues to loom large on the all-time greatest albums lists of Rolling Stone, Q, Pitchfork, NME and various other forums for people to argue in comments sections. Virtually every track on the album was a hit single or fan favourite, including “Hold It Now, Hit It,” “The New Style,” “Paul Revere,” “Brass Monkey,” “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party),” “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” and more.

Licensed To Ill was the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200 and has been certified RIAA Diamond in the U.S. in 2015 for more than 10 million album sales.

Capital Cities

Capital Cities became a global sensation following the release of their 2013 debut album, In A Tidal Wave of Mystery, which included the 11-million selling single “Safe and Sound”. This fall sees Capital Cities return to the road, heralded by the September 30 release of their new single “Vowels” via Capitol/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Featured on the band’s forthcoming EP due for release this autumn, “Vowels” will also appear in the FIFA 17 video game and official soundtrack on Spotify.

Founded and fronted by Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant, Capital Cities are still riding the tidal wave of 1.6 million albums sold, 600 million global streams, and Platinum certifications for “Safe and Sound” in numerous countries, including Canada. Capital Cities will be touring South America and the United States this fall, with no Canadian dates as-yet announced. Sadistik teams up with producer Ronny J on an aggressive new banger that emphasizes ”keeping the snakes out of your circle” and the paranoia that accompanies maintaining authenticity. Perseus inadvertently falls into the new renaissance of Underground Rap, which is gaining a great deal of popularity with listeners in search of music with more to offer than current mainstream rap clichés. Sadistik took a breather between finishing songs for the new album to taunt the artificial populace with a beat from one of his favorite producers in the genre. Ronny J, who has a devout following of his own, has produced for a handful of notable artists including Denzel Curry, Keith Ape and The Underachievers. Perseus is available now exclusively via Soundcloud.

On Thursday September 15th, Voys launched the third video of his musical story “Louise In The Clouds :Strange Planet.”

An Alternative Pop/Rock Song- Cinematic & Electric

With this third episode, Voys proposes an alternative pop/rock song. This time, Louise drops the mask and unveil her beauty by walking in a mysterious town… She’s looking for something, but what? We will let you guess..

Born Joy Dead

Have Born Joy Dead just surfaced with the most TGIF video of the year? Premiering today via Music Feeds is the brand new tongue-in-cheek workplace instructional clip from this cheeky Brisbane outfit.

Inspired by classic workplace comedies such as Office Space, Workaholics and The Office, Born Joy Dead set out to create a satirical guide to behaviour in the workplace. Enlisting the help of creative mastermind Greg Kelly from Creative Clones as director, the Brisbane lads dressed up in some corporate garb and got to it. ‘Sourdough’ itself is a metaphorical F.U. to the daily grind; influenced by that unfortunate reality most creative types face: the dreaded day job. Splashed with cheesy role-play scenarios acted out by the band, it’s a hilarious pisstake on what to do (and not to do) when the boss isn’t looking.

Busying themselves with a huge number of shows lately, Born Joy Dead have managed to clock a single launch, support slot for The Whitlams and two unofficial BIGSOUND showcases in just the last two weeks. Forever champions of the underdog (and saving that dough), the rascals offered free sourdough to punters as well as free tickets to any bakery worker keen to attend the single launch. Not slowing down, they’ve also just inked a management deal with Mucho Bravado, a booking deal with PS Music Group and have their eyes set on more shows to be announced soon.

Hope and Social

On the 30th of September, darlings of the Leeds’ DIY scene Hope and Social release their debut single “Sunrise Laughing”, from their much anticipated studio album “Feel”. This new record shows a breadth and depth that extends beyond that of Hope and Social’s already eclectic back catalogue.

A sonic-smorgasbord of a single, “Sunrise Laughing” is as light, bright and fresh as it is big, ballsy and bold. Sweet, summery and non-too-serious, “Sunrise Laughing” sees Hope and Social embracing the use of the recording studio as an instrument in its own right. This band come over like a cross between Elbow having a tea party with The Polyphonic Spree. There’s a lot of joy and laughter and as their name encapsulates, much to be hopeful and social about.

The video which will be launched fairly soon too comes from the extremely talented Virpi Kettu (lead animator, Radiohead – Burn The Witch) who will produce the video for “Sunrise Laughing”, the first of 9 videos for the record.

British-Danish synth pop duo Perpacity will soon release their new single ‘Vain in a World’ on September 16. This rather Erasure-esque track follows accolades for the single ‘9725’ and b-side ‘Eternal ft. Nordik Fire’. Both tracks are from their forthcoming second album ‘Arise’. Comprised of 14 tracks, it is scheduled for release on October 7.

Perpacity is a duo comprised of Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup, who reside in Bristol (UK) and Copenhagen (Denmark) respectively. Their music exhibits a strong command of melody and texture, characterized by unique dark moving electronic soundscapes and vocals to set your heart alight. This is genuine, unconditional love for synthpop or dance-pop.

Martin Nyrup started to craft music back in the days of the Commodore 64. Progressing to other synth and computer-related instruments and gradually mastering recording technologies, he fairly quickly got involved in writing music for the gaming industry. After moving onto the PC, he worked for various game studios creating music, game effects and conversions for the many soundcards of that era.

He met Perpacity vocalist Ian Harling when working in the gaming industry, who originally hails from the Isle of Man. Ian laid down vocals to one of Martin’s compositions, giving birth to Perpacity some eight years ago. Perpacity released their debut album‘The Sinner Inclination’ in early 2015, followed by the singles ‘Obscene’, ‘Save Me’ and ‘Volatile Cohesion’.

“When we set out to write the new album we agreed to not try to go for a specific mood, theme or atmosphere – that whether a song or a track made the initial cut depended purely on whether we like it and whether it speaks to us. We purposely allowed other genres to influence what came out of each song,” explains Martin Nyrup.

Martin’s musical influences include Depeche Mode, Yazoo, New Order, and Kraftwerk. These strikingly differ from Ian’s, who says Irish bands, both indie and folk, such as Clannad, The Cranberries and Plague Monkeys have deeply inspired him, as well as Elsiane and Sarah McLachlan.

“One of the reasons that Martin and I work well together is that we don’t have the same tastes in music, often quite the opposite,” saysIan Harling.

The ‘Arise’ LP was mastered by Alexander Kretov from renowned dreampop band Ummagma. On October 7, ‘Arise’ will be released on CD and digital download via the duo’s Bandcamp, Amazon, and elsewhere. It is already available for pre-order on Bandcamp, with immediate download of ‘9725’ and ‘Eternal ft. Nordik Fire’.

Dark yet phosphersescent, anchored by sharp, crystalline production from Malcolm Besley (City Calm Down, Snakadktal & The Creases), Manouevres sounds like the work of a much more mature band. But not only are Osaka newcomers to the scene – they’re life’s relative newcomers too, with each member only just twenty years old.

Drawing inspiration from the golden era of indie rock, frontman Edvard Hakansson began piecing together his body of work little by little while he was still in high school. After a sojourn to the UK, he returned to home soil with a fresh attitude and a fierce appetite: “Gilbert (Hulme, bass/keyboard) and I listened really critically, and decided that the songs weren’t what we wanted. So we basically took every single song apart to a bass line or guitar part and rewrote them maybe four times until we felt okay playing them to someone else. Once we brought them to Mal (Besley) and got the tick of approval, we recorded them over two weeks at Soundpark in Northcote and in our attic in Windsor.”

Still Changing

‘In The End’, Still Changing’s first full length album out September 23, is at its most base level about what is ultimately the only thing that matters: The people we share our lives with. It captures the essence of the band’s personal journey through their many years as friends first, musicians second. They are a young yet experienced band, with all the members having been involved in music from an early age. As a child, lead singer Marius Mørve used songwriting to create his own colorful and safe universe after the loss of a close family member prompted his imagination to develop a method of storytelling to cope the loss. Eventually this became a method of fun and engaging escape that expanded without limits. This pure joy for music, a world where anything is possible, is the founding element of his music.

The enjoyment of music, the experiences and the people you get to meet along the way is what keeps them going. Though for the members of Still Changing (Marius Mørkve, Magnus Dulsrud, Fredrik Bechensten, Markus Agøy Sand), playing in a band is more than simply sharing musical experiences. Those experiences are driven by the close encounters with each other as human beings, sharing our joys and sorrows, observing and learning from each other’s lives. How we relate to ourselves and those around us is what really comes to define us as individuals. Their backgrounds, their individual experiences and tastes, give ‘In The End’ the distinct sound Still Changing has developed over the past five years. Each album gives them an opportunity to start over with new colors, ideas, and approaches, all with their past experiences in perspective.

The album has come together seamlessly from creativity and playfulness in the studio. No sound untested, no input gone unrecognized as long as it gives the song a little extra something. The album shows Still Changing’s ability and need combat the monotonous day-to-day routines using energetic and catchy indie pop rock. ‘In The End’ is a story about friendship, musical exploration and is still just the beginning of Still Changing’s journey.

Lunden Reign

Lunden Reign’s recent CrueFest concert at the world famous Whisky A Go-Go in West Hollywood proved to be yet another powerhouse show. While sharing the stage with heavy hitters L.A. Story, Westfield Massacre and Blacklist Union, Nikki & Laura along with bassist Matt Denis, Julian Tomarin (guitar) and Matt Lucich (drums) brought that unmistakable Lunden Reign vibe to the Whisky and the packed house it entertained.

RED WAGON (Can't Return to Yesterday) – Lunden Reign PREVIEW-TRAILER from Lunden Reign on Vimeo.

Their set rocked out with 4 brand new songs set to release on their upcoming album including the title track “Confessions” and “Red Wagon”. Nikki wooed those packed tight up to the stage with “Stardust Daze” and topped it off with the edgy and environmentally charged “Fate of the World”, bringing tears to the eyes of several fans.

Their just released first single and video “Red Wagon (Can’t Return To Yesterday)” is the first of 10 songs from “Confessions”. Both the song and video have been submitted and accepted for Grammy consideration in “BEST VIDEO” and “BEST NEW SINGLE” categories.

Says Nikki, “I’m really thrilled about this next record. “Red Wagon” is a powerhouse, and a couple of the other songs hit me super hard which makes them easy to perform emotionally. I hope that what we did at the Whisky recently will transcend into the studio – performances like that are what I hope to share with our fans. If you close your eyes and listen, if you feel like your with us, then I’ve done my job as the lead singer.”

Josh Franklin

Leading up to his sophomore album release, “Spent” next month, today Josh Franklin released the album’s first single, “Masterpiece”, complete with a fun, inspiring new video. The playful video uses beautiful choreography between two couples – one straight, one gay – to illustrate the initial mating dance that we’ve all experienced upon meeting a potential new love and the uncertainty that ensues.

Putting on his hat as a captivating music artist, Josh released his self-titled debut pop album in 2013; produced by Grammy award winner, Peter Wade.

His second album “Spent” – available Fall 2016 – was recorded with all local talent in his hometown of Colorado Springs. The much-anticipated album features lush orchestrations and a production team headed by world renowned musician and producer Thomas Dawson Jr. of The Commodores. About the album, he explains, “It explores the search for self-validation through the ups and downs of relationships, financial burdens, and the journey of an artist. I set out to have half of the album sound like a live recording and the other half sound completely epic and to feel almost cinematic in tone. We definitely hit the mark and I’m thrilled with the musical journey everyone will go through while listening to these tunes.”

Rolls Bayce

Fresh from their buzzworthy BIGSOUND showcase, Brisbane psych-soul trio Rolls Bayce flex their inimitable gift for blending the old and new on their latest single ‘Inside Out’, the first track from the band’s forthcoming debut album.

Searing, direct and impossibly tight, ‘Inside Out’ is a sonic melting pot. There’s a sense of familiarity that breaks to unexpected territory; this is a track that knows where it’s come from, but is unashamedly exploratative. Galactic synths undulate over stirring guitar jabs, signalling a new era of maturation from Rolls Bayce.

That’s not to detract from their journey thus far, though. Rolls Bayce’s 2014 self-titled debut EP immediately thrust them onto the international stage, attracting high praise from tastemaking media like NME, Rolling Stone and The Line Of Best Fit. National youth broadcaster triple j were, and remain, one of the band’s earliest champions, exposing them to legions of fans by adding singles ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ and ‘On My Own’ to rotation.

With a Brisbane single launch show on November 10 at The Foundry just announced, and the trio’s long-awaited debut full length effort looming large on the horizon, Rolls Bayce are stepping up to take their place as industry innovators and a live act to be reckoned with.

‘Inside Out’ is released on Friday September 23, and launches on Thursday November 10 at The Foundry, Brisbane.
