Press Release Roundup: September 28

posted September 29, 2015, 8:06 pm by Carlita | Filed Under Music News | comment Leave a Comment

Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, we will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across our virtual desk.

In anticipation for the release of upcoming album, Leo Rising, due out in 2016, Karmin has revealed the gorgeously layered power pop single “Didn’t Know You” along with a dynamic video accompaniment and a stripped down acoustic version that showcases Amy’s strong, far-reaching vocals. Now, to support the new single and album, Karmin will be making an appearance on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ with Andy Cohen airing on Bravo tonight. The incredibly fun late night, interactive talk show has previously hosted stars such as Cher, Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep, and is now adding Karmin to the lineup for their second time on the show. Be sure to set your DVR’s for this evening and keep an eye out for more music from Karmin later this year.

The Underachievers

As a followup gem to their acclaimed sophomore album, ‘Evermore – The Art of Duality’ released last Friday, The Underachievers deliver their second official (2 in 1) music video directed by Yashxana for “Star Signs” (prod. by Nick Léon) and “Generation Z” (prod. by Nick Léon & POSHtronaut). While sticking with the overall structural theme of the album based on the “The Art of Duality,” the video displays a more cerebral vibe with positive messaging in “Star Signs” verses the more contradicting and energetic side in “Generation Z”.

Dave Koz

Dave Koz

Special Guests Jonathan Butler, Candy Dulfer and the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley Join Koz On 18th Anniversary Of The Holiday Run, Which Kicks Off November 27

Nine-time GRAMMY® nominee and saxophonist extraordinaire Dave Koz will be joined by special guests Jonathan Butler, Candy Dulfer and Bill Medley in the must-see holiday show of 2015. Koz’s annual Christmas tour, now celebrating its 18th anniversary, will kick off at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota, FL on November 27 – the day after Thanksgiving. See below for itinerary. Tickets are available now HERE.

The irrepressible Jonathan Butler, who has earned accolades in the R&B, contemporary jazz and gospel fields, and Dutch saxophone star Candy Dulfer, who was introduced with the smash pop single “Lily Was Here” and has since released 10 studio albums and performed with such artists as Prince, Dave Stewart and Lionel Ritchie, are both “alumni” of the tour. The run will mark the legendary Bill Medley’s first time on the road with Koz. Medley, who co-founded The Righteous Brothers with Bobby Hatfield, has released 14 solo albums, including the GRAMMY-winning Dirty Dancing. Koz and his guests will put fresh spins on holiday classics as well as other selections that beautifully capture the spirit of the season.

Fans can expect an extra-festive show this year, as Koz is celebrating his 25th year as a recording artist. His latest album, Dave Koz’s Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection (Concord Records), marks his ninth album to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and it is still in the Top 5. The album, which is available HERE, shines a light on some of the saxophonist’s most memorable creative partnerships, drawing from Koz’s extensive catalog as well as other artists’ recording projects – including duets with such artists as Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Michael McDonald, Barry Manilow and Luther Vandross. Newly recorded tracks include the first single, “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” featuring Rick Braun and Kenny Lattimore, which was a Top 5 hit at Smooth A/C and Jazz radio. The follow-up single will be “Good Foot” featuring the man Koz credits with starting his career, Jeff Lorber.

Kurt Cobain

Hailed as one of the most innovative and intimate documentaries of all time, experience Kurt Cobain like never before in the only fully authorized portrait of the famed music icon in KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK. Acclaimed filmmaker Brett Morgen expertly blends Cobain’s personal archive of art, music, never-before-seen movies, animation and revelatory interviews from his family and closest friends. Wildly creative and highly praised, the documentary follows Kurt from his earliest years in this visceral and detailed cinematic insight of an artist struggling to come to terms and make sense of his place in the world.

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK, will be released by Universal Music Enterprises in multiple formats, including the Super Deluxe Edition as well as in Blu-ray, DVD and digital video formats.

The documentary, KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK, is an authentic and unflinching look into Kurt’s life, art and mind through his own unique lens. Following Kurt from his earliest years in Aberdeen, WA, through the height of his fame, the film creates an immersive cinematic insight into an artist who craved the spotlight even as he rejected the trappings of fame. Brett Morgen who wrote, directed and produced the documentary began working on it in 2007 when Cobain’s family approached him with the idea and offered him unrestricted access to all of Cobain’s personal and family archives. The documentary features Cobain and Courtney Love’s only daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, as a co-executive producer on the film and includes footage from various Nirvana performances as well as unreleased home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, and songbooks.

The soundtrack album, KURT COBAIN – MONTAGE OF HECK: THE HOME RECORDINGS will also be released on the following formats: standard 13 track CD, 31 track deluxe edition CD and digitally on November 13, 2015 via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. A 2LP vinyl edition of KURT COBAIN – MONTAGE OF HECK: THE HOME RECORDINGS will follow on December 4, 2015. In addition, a 7-inch Single featuring “And I Love Her” and “Sappy (Early Demo)” is also scheduled for release on November 20th.

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK SUPER DELUXE EDITION and KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK: THE HOME RECORDINGS both include the highly anticipated soundtrack, an aural complement to the documentary in both concept and experience. Comprised from various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone, the soundtrack allows a rare, unfiltered glimpse into Cobain’s creative progression from early song snippets and short demos to musical experiments and ultimately, pieces of songs or lyrics that eventually appeared on later Nirvana albums.

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK SUPER DELUXE EDITION will include the 2 hour plus, full-length feature film and 48 minutes of bonus interviews on Blu-ray and DVD, a 31 track deluxe soundtrack on CD and cassette, a 160-page hardbound book with extended interviews and images from the Cobain archive, a puzzle with a collectable storage container, movie poster, postcards and bookmark. The 31 track deluxe soundtrack CD showcases tracks from the documentary including spoken word, demos and full songs.

Ben Folds

Ben Folds’ new album So There, released last week, debuted at #1 on both Billboard’s Classical and Classical Crossover Albums chart. The record also debuted at #6 Alternative Albums, #9 Top Internet Albums, #13 Vinyl. Two weeks ago, Folds appeared on the first-ever Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He was handpicked by Colbert and bandleader Jon Batiste to perform Sly & The Family Stone’s “Everyday People” in a supergroup along side Mavis Staples, Brittany Howard, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Aloe Blacc and others.

So There has been receiving rave reviews since its release. NPR’s All Songs Considered heralded the new album as “the most lovable piece of music I’ve ever heard from Ben Folds,” while The Guardian wrote “for the new tracks with yMusic, the textures of the ensemble instruments – string trio, flute, clarinet, trumpet – are not ornamentally grafted on the music: they are the music. “American Songwriter said the new album “shows Folds to be even more gifted than many of his followers thought,” while the AV Club said, “He’ll never be able to shake his core love of music that challenges as well as entertains. For fans, that’s a lucky thing indeed.” The Wall Street Journal noted that “Folds has long tinkered with orchestral passages on pop albums, but yMusic added a new dimension, and Consequence of Sound said that on the new album, “Folds’ gifts for narrative and composing are clear.” Vulture put “I’m Not the Man” on their “Nine Best New Songs of the Week” list saying, “The artists of the New York classical ensemble yMusic amplify this song to something we haven’t heard from Ben Folds before. Their vocals and sumptuous interludes give the band’s stripped-down piano arrangements a robust grandeur. A perfect addition to Folds’ recent foray into classical music.”

Pre-order the album HERE.

“I had this album in my head for years before I did it. Looking at it overall, to see the thoughts of a 16 year old gain any kind of acknowledgement makes me feel like I have arrived… But to see it in this incarnation … I’m humbled” – Q-Tip

“This album means a lot. It was the beginning of our careers; the beginning of our imprint; the beginning of seeing life the way we saw it, and being able to put it down in words and music.” – Ali Shaheed Muhammad

People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm made its debut in 1990 and came at a crucial time for hip-hop. The Queens-raised childhood friends– Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White-took the traditional hip-hop formula and threw it out the window. Like their contemporaries in De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers, all of whom would become known as the Native Tongues collective, their lyrical and musical influences were unlike any hip-hop group on the scene. While many built breaks around vintage soul and funk samples, ATCQ utilized samples of jazz and ’70s rock. Their verses were conversational instead of confrontational, addressing socially conscious topics with laid-back candor and slightly off-kilter humor.
