Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL

For members of the ever faithful #PurpleArmy, today feels like Christmas. The highly anticipated solo Prince ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ and 3rdEyeGirl ‘PLECTRUMELELCTRUM’ albums have finally arrived. I think any recent Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL concert attendees would agree (including the marathon four hour surprise show I attended at the Hollywood Palladium), hearing these new songs live amps up the experience 100%. Dropping online clips and sneak peeks over the past few months, fans can now stream both albums on Spotify here and tune into his Livestream listening party TONIGHT live from Paisley Park at 10:30 PM EST, 7:30 PM PST on YAHOO Screen .

AfroPunk Fest

After rocking Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn in August, AFROPUNK Fest (check out our review here) will head down south to Atlanta in 2015 and is celebrating that fact with a kickoff party featuring SZA, Baby Baby and Hollyweerd on Oct 5th. ATLiens can RSVP to get the secret party details here!

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist’s Renegades of Rhythm tour visits the West Coast this week, which stories the history and impact of Hip-Hop and honors the legacy of the legendary “Master of Records,” Afrika Bambaataa. Today, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist announced the supporting acts for their 25+ dates across the US (including 2 NYC shows at Irving Plaza) and the 2 dates in Canada: Edan & Locke, Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society and The Gaff. They have also added an additional West Coast date at Humboldt State University on October 6th in Arcata, CA.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist will be using only vinyl pulled from Bambaataa’s historic collection – over 40,000 strong and permanently archived at Cornell University – and will aim to present Bambaataa’s legacy in all its genre-busting and socially-minded complexity. ‘Rock or Bust,’ the highly anticipated new studio album from AC/DC, will be released December 2, 2014. Featuring 11 new tracks and recorded in Spring 2014 at Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, BC, ‘Rock or Bust’ finds AC/DC once again working with producer Brendan O’Brien and mixer Mike Fraser.
Starting September 27, Turner Sports will provide fans a sneak peek of the new track ‘Play Ball’ as part of the 2014 Major League Baseball Postseason campaign. Check back here for more.

AC/DC News

“Rock or Bust” is the first AC/DC album in the band’s 41 year history without founding member Malcolm Young on the recordings. Earlier this year AC/DC released a statement explaining that due to illness, Malcolm would be taking a break from the band. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Malcolm’s condition, he will not be returning to the band. AC/DC will undertake a world tour in support of ‘Rock or Bust’ in 2015. Stevie Young, nephew of founding members Angus and Malcolm Young, plays rhythm guitar on ‘Rock or Bust’ and will accompany the band on tour.

Dark Blue

Philly band Dark Blue is now previewing their latest effort ‘Pure Reality’ a week ahead of its release on Jade Tree. Says bandleader Sharkey on the creation of the album, “I refused to allow myself to get on the graveyard sleep schedule, so I would walk around in a shot-nerves psychosis every night patrolling a desolate university campus in north Canberra, Australia. A good portion of these songs were written in this walking coma at 4 am under the cold ACT moon. Alone and to be quite honest, comfortably beleaguered.” Jump ahead two years later and we find Sharkey returning to his hometown of Philadelphia to spiral into culture shock; the fuel that makes the raging though austere songs that make up ‘Pure Reality’ what they are. ‘Being thrust back into this fucking intellectual ghetto after a few years in solitude with some smart people has really done a number on my head. I hate my job, I detest my neighborhood and my neighbors. But this is the city that made me and I am forever grateful. Life is great then its shit, then it’s fine and back again until it’s done. I long to get back to a great part of my life.’ To hear ‘Pure Reality’, click here.

Toronto MC Saukrates dropped a brand new video this week, directed by JTRUE for “The Big Bang.” The tune features massive production by Toronto’s Rich Kidd. Recorded during a session at 8 a.m., it’s straight from the gut spittin’ and, as Soxx says himself in the song “The honorable Saukrates presiding/over your soul/burying you in deep ocean flow…” Saukrates released “AMANI” on September 23rd as his 4th release. A 4-track EP featuring co-production by Rich Kidd and Snaz, and guest appearances by SonReal. The release of Amani is a defining moment in Saukrates’ career as he wipes the slate clean to begin a new chapter. A chapter in which Saukrates is more introspective, experimental and fervent in his approach to music.

Heart In Hand

HEART IN HAND returns with their most accomplished and dynamic record to date. Choosing this time to self-produce, the band also enlisted the reputable ears of Will Putney at Machine Shop Studios (THY ART IS MURDER, NORTHLANE), USA for mixing duties. ‘A Beautiful White’ will be released on November 3rd in Europe and on November 4th in North America (digital only) via SOAR/Century Media Records. Check out the lyric video for “Poison Pen Letters” below.

tētēma, a new duo featuring Anthony Pateras and Mike Patton, will release their debut album, Geocidal, on Dec. 9 via Ipecac Recordings. “Geocidal started when I locked myself in a convent in rural France for 10 days to think about rhythm and sound,” explained Pateras. “I then went to Paris to record the drums and prepared piano…that was the first thing to go down, then electronics, followed by orchestrations of the electronics and drums. This process took about a year and a half, and we started to add vocals in January of this year when I visited Mike in San Francisco. We had the craziest 48 hours together, and somewhere in between finishing each other’s thoughts, it became apparent to us that this music was going to be very, very special.”

“The interesting thing about the record is that every element is recorded in a different city, and this gives the sound a displaced, almost vaporous intensity – it comes from both everywhere and nowhere.. Everything on the record is played in live – there are no samples, no sequencing, everything is handcrafted and performed by a human. This is not a Luddite manifesto, it was more a desire to base everything in this music on feel and instinct – to never be told what to do by a machine and embrace the temporal fecundity which comes out of that.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Detroit duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. have debuted new track “James Dean” at Esquire, who said the band has “embraced a mellower side perfect for the change in seasons by dropping this brand new single just before reworking their live set.” The single, now available for purchase here, is accompanied by their cover of The Tallest Man On Earth’s song “Revelation Blues.”

The band, consisting of Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott, have added dates to their upcoming fall North American tour, which will kick off on October 17th in Seattle, making a stop at LA’s brand new Regent Theatre, and concludes with two hometown shows at Detroit’s Crofoot Ballroom on November 22nd and 23rd. Madi Diaz,Miniature Tigers, and Mini Mansions are supporting. Tickets available now.
