Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

Long rumored to exist, a rare 1977 German television performance of The Decemberists performing their hit music song “Make You Better” on The Old Blue Rock Palace Show has just been unearthed to the delight of the band’s hardcore fans among whom the fabled appearance had achieved mythical status. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

The Decemberists have also announced a long-awaited follow-up performance of “Make You Better” which will take place on the U.S. television programConan on December 3, 2014. The song has been making a quick ascent up the Triple-A radio charts cracking the Top 10 in just three weeks.

The footage from The Old Blue Rock Palace Show provides invaluable documentation of the band’s early development that will be pored over by rock historians for years to come. It was discovered on the show’s website theoldbluerockpalaceshow.tumblr.com, which was previously assumed to have been defunct for decades. The malfunctioning website has also leaked illuminating outtakes of lead singer Colin Meloy’s interview with the show’s host.

Make You Better” will also be released on The Decemberists’ seventh studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, which will come out January 20 in North America on Capitol Records and January 19 in the U.K. and Europe on Rough Trade Records. A pre-sale of the album in all formats as well as tickets for the band’s European and North American tours are available now at thedecemberists.com.

LITTLE TYBEE: A Weathervane “Shaking Through” Session

“We’ve been around the block, so it’s rare when a group of musicians really floors us with their abilities like Little Tybee did. But amazingly, their creativity doesn’t stop at their MONSTER musicianship. The band is a hotbed of innovative ideas on what it means to be a band in todays industry. In September they stopped by Miner Street to tell us all about it.” – Weathervane Music
