Jazz Street: Duke Ellington

duke ellingtonListening to the greats is a worthwhile exercise not just because of all the wonderful music there is to sift through. It’s a necessity to beef up your musical IQ. You can see the enormous influence a bandleader like Ellington had on so much of what happened in popular music after he started making recordings in the 1920s. His career, leading an orchestra spanned more than 50 years until his death in 1974 at the age of 75. It’s amazing, listening to a great rock album, Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic, and realizing one of the cuts, “East St. Louis Toodle-OO” was a top-10 hit for Duke in ’27. Like Armstrong and Basie, it’s hard to imagine the evolution of popular music without this remarkable composer and pianist. There’s so many great cuts in his song catalog (written by himself and others), if there’s a song a listener has misgivings about, check for the Ellington version before making a final judgement.

Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days in LA ended with a bang on Monday night with hip hop royalty Nicki Minaj closing the festival with a special surprise appearance. The hip-hop and R&B superstar closed out 30 Days in LA as the secret guest for the final show at the Teragram Ballroom. In a jam-packed, hit-filled set, Minaj kicked off her heels and delivered a truly memorable closing set. Minaj, an artist used to headlining stadiums, took to the stage at the Teragram Ballroom, which has a capacity of only 600.

Sonny Digital, the Atlanta producer best known for his work on YC’s hit single “Racks”, opened up the night and warmed up the crowd. Sonny was followed up by Jazz Cartier, the Canadian rapper who was nominated on the Polaris Music Prize Long List this year for his album Marauding in Paradise and played several high-energy tracks

The evening encapsulated the past jam-packed month of special musical moments, from Big Sean’s commanding performance at the Hollywood Palladium to TV On The Radio being joined by special guest Miguel at the Theatre at Ace Hotel, Grimes debuting new material at the Mayan, BADBADNOTGOOD performing unreleased tracks with Future Island’s Sam Herring, and Soulection’s legendary dance party with special guest Wale at the Regent. Over 30 days and at 24 venues, LA music lovers were treated to performances from today’s hottest acts, including Flume, Foals, Joey Bada$$, Sylvan Esso, Vince Staples and many more. Red Bull Sound Select members showed up early and got to see breaking acts like BASECAMP, G Herbo, In The Whale, Nicole Dollanganger, Mick Jenkins and more.

    Introducing: Equal Space

If anyone tells you music is just entertainment, I wouldn’t blame you for smacking them. No sensible person argues against music’s entertainment value, but anyone willing to over simplify music’s worth is willfully deaf, passive aggressive, or both. Another option is they simply listen to the wrong music. Anyone craving music solely to express themselves physically or else distract them from difficult tasks isn’t likely discerning about aesthetic quality. How new is it? Is everyone listening to it? Does it have a good beat?

To each their own. Few things in this life are apparent beyond practicalities, but one apparent fact of life is there are other types of music than mainstream pop. The star-making machinery, as Joni Mitchell once called it, might remain a venerable cash cow for show business impresarios of every stripe, but art lives on with musicians who write and play because they don’t have a choice. These musicians live on internal simmer and only self-expression blows off the needed steam to lower their temperatures. Equal Space, a four piece based out of Bloomington, Indiana, are among these artists.

    Introducing: Electric Revolution

Everyone can know redemption. I’m not referring solely to church approved redemption, but any journey or moment restoring personal value and steering our days towards more productive ends. It never comes easy. Nothing worth anything in this life does. We fritter away so much of our time twiddling our thumbs waiting for someone or thing that might save us from ourselves, wipe our slates clean, or tell us who we are. There is no knight on horseback or fair maiden sweeping in to carry us away. The skies will not part and rain manna from heaven. If we snap out of it, we see turns in our personal stories as tied to our choices alone and we are our only way out of internal quicksand. It is a painful crawl, inch by bloody inch, and most never try.

Redemption wears many faces and the ten songs on Electric Revolution’s full-length debut, Character Is Power, stare it down from a variety of angles. What do you do when youthful excess becomes middle-aged desperation? What happens when you’ve pursued an elusive dream through thousands of Friday and Saturday nights, stop, look around, and see twenty plus years has evaporated like dew on the grass? How do you keep holding on after losing people you love and indicting yourself, in part, for their collapse? Electric Revolution searches and finds answers in these songs. The album’s ten tracks say many things, some of them simply about grabbing life by the scuff of its neck and enjoying it while it’s here, but they say something much larger as well. Knowing yourself, acting accordingly and never, come hell or high water, compromising what you love brings redemption.
