Charles Martel’s Top 1000: Part 11

posted January 1, 2014, 12:30 am by CharlesMartel | Filed Under Music News, Video | comment Leave a Comment

One thing about this list is that it is continuously evolving. It is bound to. As 2014 dawns I begin to wonder how many tracks released in this year will find their way onto the list. Usually it takes some time for something to be elevated, which is why this list contains very few tracks from 2013. Just as it takes time for a classic to become a classic, it takes time for individual tracks to rise up the list. Also, we should not forget, there are still albums I have not yet heard from way back – to the sixties or seventies (Judee Sill, the Action, May Blitz). Who knows what may be lurking on those which will bang on the door and demand entry to the list when I finally get round to checking them, assuming that is that I am able to do so.

For New Year’s Day, a new milestone as we pass into the 700’s.

I did not work hard enough this year. While I was fortunate enough to have a few albums pushed my way, a change of musical interest may have deflated any pique or interest in new music, reverting me to listen mostly to my pre-existing library. That being said, enjoy my top picks of 2013.

Top 10 albums of 2013:

1. Palms “Palms”
2. Cage The Elephant “Melophobia”
3. Iron and Wine “Ghost on Ghost”
4. Foals “Holy Fire”
5. The Moth The Flame “&”
6. Charles Bradley featuring Menahan Street Band- “Victim of Love”
7. Senses Fail “Renacer”
8. Arctic Monkeys “AM” (I’m shocked as you are, wow!)
9. How To Destroy Angels “Welcome Oblivion”
10. The Civil Wars -“The Civil Wars”

The Best Music of 2013 – At Least According to G.W. Hill

Early in the year I thought this was going to be a pretty mediocre year from music. I wasn’t hearing a lot of stuff that was really exceptional. The thing is, as the year progressed, that really changed. In fact, it wound up quite difficult to get this list to any kind of decent length. I had to make some tough cuts to get it into a small enough format to work.

Songs That ROCKED My 2013

STRM2013I will remember 2013 as the year in music where pop co-opted and revitalized retro genres like disco and Motown, and where “twerking” unfortunately became a thing. Miley, Katy, Beyoncé, Justin and Lady Gaga were names that fought each other tooth and nail for spotlight attention, but that’s not to say rock was put on the back burner by any means. Despite rumours of its impending demise, there were plenty of guitar-and-drum-driven tunes released over the past 12 months that kept my earbuds busy and my speakers humming. In addition to the awesome songs I’ve been featuring on since June, I have singled out thirteen others that I found myself cranking up whenever I heard them on my iPod or on the radio. I present you my choices, alphabetically, in concise tweet-like form along with an accompanying video. Enjoy, thanks for reading, and see you all in 2014!

Charles Martel’s Top 1000: Part 10

Christmas Day – and still the staff of Musicemissions are hard at work, slaving over a hot computer keyboard. For those who might have expected a plethora of Christmas songs around today’s blog, sadly you are going to be disappointed. As we hurtle onwards heading for number 800 I suspect that, slowly, some more familiar names will begin to creep into the list. This should not be entirely unexpected. After all, the most well-known bands are well-known for a reason. While I have always loved hunting out that long lost gem – the sole output by some obscure outfit who disappeared from the face of the Earth shortly after their one release, as we move further up the list you will begin to see more familiar names, even if the actual tracks may not be quite what you expected.

And so, we count down the last batch towards 800.

Live Review and Interviews: Red Bull Sound Select with El-P and special guest Killer Mike, Thurz, Warm Brew and Azizi Gibson

‘Tis the season to wrap up 2013 and if you were looking to turn up one last time before putting on ugly reindeer sweaters, jingling some bells and shutting it down until 2014, Red Bull Sound Select’s LA show provided the perfect opportunity to do so. Mixing LA-based rising talent (Thurz, Azizi Gibson and the group Warm Brew) with an East Coast producer/artist on top of his game right now (El-P who brought along his Run the Jewels partner Killer Mike), you’d have to search far and wide to find a line-up like that for $3. On a cold (ok, it was 50) night, I ventured to the historic Troubadour to peep these acts. Read more

Charles Martel’s Top 1000: Part 9

Now, someone has asked how is it possible to compile such a list. Well, actually, it is not that difficult though it is a bit time consuming. Copy the names and artists from your iTunes onto a word document and then delete out those you know definitely will not make it. Then you are left with a list of contenders. Choose between the first and the second, then the third and the fourth, then the fifth and the sixth and so on, on your list. Then repeat – A/B: D/E = DABE and so on. Sure it takes time, and it is fun to go back to the songs and play them, one compared with the other, when you get stuck for choice.

And so, here are songs ZGYKH – FHVVC (haha).
